On our most recent trip to Victoria, we ordered pizza from this place. Yeah, I know, not very adventurous of us, but we were hungry and pizza seemed like a fitting choice at that moment. It is considered one of the best in the city, so I thought it was a safe choice.
I dont know if they were having an off day or something, but I was completely let down by the pizza here. We ordered a Teriyaki Steak Pizza and a Carribean and both tasted bland. The carribean tasted a little overcooked. It is rare that I leave a pizza unfinished and this was the case for this one.
I am having trouble classifying my last experience at the Irish. When I was in Victoria, I headed down to the bar with a group of friends who were also from out of town. It was a safe for us, as the food as we remembered it was consistently good and the service as well, not to mention the ambience and live music 24/7.
This time around, it was just 'meh'. I knew this place played primarily Irish music so there were no surprises there. I don't know if my standards have been spoiled or raised, but I found the prices to be a little overpriced. The chicken wings were a little cold and my pulled pork sandwich was a bit of a downer. The drinks made up for it. There's nothing like a good old Irish beer to get here. Murphys, Guiness, all that good stuff. There are also local BC drinks served here.
My visit to Rebar was great; it was one of those visits where you don't know whether you should thank yourself for not looking up the menu. We stumbled upon this place after doing some shopping downtown.
My surprise came from the fact that it was a healthy, vegan place. The not-so-health-conscious and meat-loving person in me was kind of taken aback, but since we were kind of hungry, we decided to stay and give it a try.
I honestly did not think I was going to come out of this place feeling full or satisfied, but boy was I wrong. The poutine was good but the yam and pepita quesadilla surprised. For mains, we settled for some huevos rancheros and burgers. I opted for the swiss and mushroom almond burger while my girl chose the classic. I liked everything surprisingly.
I am definitely the kind of person that likes a place more for the food that the setting it is in, but Pagliacci's is an exception. Whilst being a tourist in Victoria, I took out my girlfriend here for a fine dining. I had read about this place before but never really cared to go. Another reason why I probably didn't head here is because the place is kind of difficult to spot. Maybe it is done purposely, as the lineups can be huge.
The decor, lighting & music (live music in case you are wondering) all contributed to making it a fine meal. Sure, it was a little crampted inside, as well as difficult to hold a proper conversation over the amount of noise provided by the music and closeness of overs, but by the time we got a table we were so famished that all we wanted was to get our hands on some food.
The food was as good as it gets. For starters, we had some crab cakes which came with some focaccia bread. Delicious. I didn't try the salads but my girlfriends' half prince of tides salad (I believe that was the name) was good. The items on the menu all had funny names, I opted for the "I'll have what she's having" blindly and ended up liking it. You get all sorts of seafoods such as crab legs, mussels, scallop and clams. Prices are not cheap but justified.
Verdict: Will come again.
My girlfriend and I were visitors here, her first but not mine. Now I don't know if Vancouver has spoilt me or something, but the food was pretty terrible. If there is one word that would describe my experience eating here at Azuma, it would be "yuck".
Why come again, you ask? Because I thought the quality had improved, and that my last experience eating here, which was over a year ago, mind you, was an isolated incident. But looking at the reviews here, apparently it is not.
The place is newly renovated and so getting a table is not a problem, as the restaurant is huge now. But looks are seriously deceiving. The sushi was pretty terrible. Lukewarm, greasy and not fresh tasting at all. Nothing you would expect to eat at a restaurant, more like in a fast food place or mall. The fried rice was sticky and absolutely cold. Not happy at all in this aspect.
The only thing that I can appreciate, but cannot say was a saving grace either was the service. The waiter we got was nice, and despite having a mix up with our food, apologized and tried to bring our food quickly. At least quicker than the rest. She did seem a little flustered by that though.
I've seen other sushi places around here so I'm hoping they have better sushi than this.
This morning I decided to go and try out this Cherry's place as I have heard quite a bit about it. When I got there at 9am it was very busy and almost full to capacity. I quickly observed that this place was different than any other breakfast restaurant I have been to, by the fact that you walk in pick up a menu yourself, then place your order at the front counter and pay for it before you even sit down.
After you place your order the counter clerk gives you a plastic piece of fruit or a plastic vegetable to put on your table, so they know where to bring your food when it is ready. You then proceed to get your own napkins, cutlery, and condiments , and even get your own coffee. They don't have ketchup bottles on the tables, or napkins, and you simply grab these extra large ketchup packs before you sit down.
There is plenty of seating and it is a fairly big establishment (estimate seating for around 60)
Because it was a busy place, I waited for about 25 minutes before my food finally arrived to my table.
I ordered the make your own omelet option from the menu where they charge a base rate of $8.95 for a 3 egg omelet, and then you pick each of the ingredients that go into it for an addition charge of 95 cents to a 1.25 per ingredient depending on what it is. I chose, mushrooms, feta, ham, and chorizo sausage, and it came out to $13.50 with tax (which is decent price)
When my food arrived it was a large and generous portion of food. The omelet was so stuffed with huge chunks of feta, tons of ham, and chorizo sausage, and mushrooms that they were bursting out of the omelet and onto the plate. It was served with 3 pieces of toast, and a side of Herbed grilled potatoes. The potatoes were not chunks, or hash brown style, but instead they were baby potatoes thinly sliced into little circular discs seasoned with oil, basil, and other herbs. They were actually quite good.
The Omelet was delicious and full of flavor.
Overall, I give the food a solid rating as it wasn't anything spectacular....yet it was very satisfying and well prepared and the presentation was good.
The service I give a Mediocre rating based on the fact that the only time you see a waitress is when she comes to bring you your plate. You do the rest. You get your own menu yourself, you pay for your food before you get it instead of after you are done, you have to get your own coffee and you have to keep getting up to get your own refills, you have to get your own napkins and cutlery, and you have to get your own ketchup. So there is very minimal table service........But I guess they are trying to be different then everyone else.
The Ambience I give a solid rating as the place is neat in appearance, has plenty of seating, and the fact that so many people were there usually indicates the place is a hit.
Attached to the main restaurant is the NEW Cherry's express where you can buy muffins, coffee, tea, ice-cream, waffles, and fudge.
I have eaten here many times and had the lunch buffet as it is a great deal. It is full of yummy tasty North Indian dishes, and keeps you full for hours, as it is a heavy style of food.
I have at times noticed some questionable sanitation issues around the handling of utensils by restaurant staff, and have had unclean drinking glasses on a few occasions. The serving staff are friendly, well dressed, and clean in appearance.
However there is one younger female staff member who works in the kitchen who often comes out in front of all the customers wearing a filthy dirty old t-shirt and these old baggy stained jogging pants. She handles the food and brings out the replacement items for the buffet as needed and at times has even served customers water and bread. She often wipes her nose in front of the customers with her bare hands, coughs openly over the buffet food, and in general is just very dirty in her appearance and how she works in front of the customers.
At first I thought she was just out in front of the customers because someone didn't show up for work, but each time I went back she was there dressed in the exact same dirty old jogging pants and old stained t-shirt. So the owners of the establishment are clearly making the decision to have her come out in front of the customers.
Based on this..........Even though the food is delicious and the value is excellent, I simply have not been able to return in months. For me clean staff means a clean kitchen. Dirty staff means a dirty kitchen.
Grilligan's is a little BBQ/Mini Donut shack located on the famous Fisherman's Wharf in Victoria.
The first thing you notice about this little place is it's neat exterior appearance. However you soon notice the man who runs the take-out stand because he does not appear to be clean or tidy in his personal appearance. His clothes look dirty and he where's an old dirty looking ball cap.
Then when I watch him serve customers, he does not wash his hands prior to serving them, nor does he wear any sort of sanitary gloves.
His main attraction is mini-donuts. But he does not serve them fresh to the customer per say, but allows them to sit for long periods of time under a small heat lamp bulb. I witnessed him go from handling cash to preparing a bag of donuts for a customer. He did not wash his hands or take any sanitary measures prior to sticking his hand all the way into a white paper donut bag to open in up before using tongs to put donuts into it.
I did take the risk about a month ago to try his mini donuts, and even though he stuck his dirty unwashed hand inside the paper bag before filling it up.......I was starving and wanted to see if they were any good. They were cold, and I could tell the oil they were cooked in was dirty and old by the flavor of the donuts.
Based on what I witnessed on several occasion visiting Fisherman's Wharf, I personally will not give my business to this establishment based on the plainly and openly visible poor food handling practices demonstrated by the man who works/owns it.
We ordered delivery from this place last night. First thing we noticed was that the price charged was more than stated on there website for the Imperial Combination for two. When I ordered I was told it would be 50 to 60 minutes, fine. It came in about 30 minutes which we thought was great until we started to eat and found that the food was BARELY warm let alone hot! We live less than 5 minutes away from this place. Chow mein noodles were tough and rubbery, they needed to be cooked more, very hard to chew and swallow. The snow peas and prawns - snow peas were soft and mushy, and the dish also was not hot. Sweet and Sour pork - had better in a mall food court. The almond breaded chicken was probably the best out of the bunch, although the batter was a bit thick and greasy. The worst of all was the Ginger Fried Beef, Where's the Beef??? It was like eating chewy sawdust or an old stick. There is no way there was any beef in there and if there was it had been cooked over and over and over again. Never had anything so disgusting! The whole meal was doused in so much MSG that I began feeling ill after just a few bites. My husband was up all night in discomfort - heartburn & gas. We will NEVER order from here again!!
It is inevitable to not eat when I go to Fisherman's wharf, so when I came here and saw the huge lineup outside of Barb's, I blindly followed.
Till today, I am still wondering why so many people were lining up to eat there! The service is alright, albeit slow, but the lineup is ridiculous. I waited half an hour to get inside. AT LEAST. Thinking the fish and chips was going to be good, I stayed in line. It is advertised as the best, #1 fish & chips but thats not what I saw! I got the halibut fish and chips and found it extremely bland and tasteless. The fish did not even taste fresh which got me disappointed, as the food is not cheap. I think it draws a lot of tourist but as a local I dont think i will come back.
I was here a couple of weeks ago but given that all the reviews are dated I decided to write one up myself! After all, I had a splendid time here.
Located in the 18th floor of the Chateau Victoria Hotel (hence its name), Vista 18 is definitely a "looker". The view you can get here of the down town is simply breathtaking. I had been here on one other occasion, valentines day the year before but wanted to give it another try. The play live music, jazz in case your wondering which just sets the mood for the night and makes you forgive any mistakes in food or service. Anyways, I had heard a lot about their breakfast and had only been here for dinner, so obviously I was dying to try it.
We didn't get to make it on time for breakfast but we still headed here for lunch. I had the cobb salad with the prawns and they were amazing to say the least. Sure, it was expensive but the food and ambience made up for it. My boyfriend ordered the reuben and the seafood hot pot, and got full.
Heron Rock used to be like a litte hidden gem in the city. Tucked away in a location that is not obvious to the eye, it makes it less of a notorious or crowded place to arrive to, which gives it a sort of intimacy that other restaurants lack. The food is on the high end but good, and the fact that they play live music on weekends is a plus.
Having said that, we decided to head to Heron for dinner, and received only poor treatment from them. This is a shock as I am from this city and have come here countless times. We didn't make a reservation (my bad, I know) but had to wait a long time, first, to get a hold of the waiter and subsequently to get a table - when there were clearly empty ones. When we finally got a table, she again took a long time to bring our food. My kalamari took forever to come. The food was nothing to write home about but still alright.
I have seriously never had a bad meal here. What I like about Il Terrazzo is that despite the number of times I have been here (and years!) the food is consistently good. It is my go-to place for Italian on special occasions in downtown. The place is lovely and romantic. Came here last with my boyfriend and we left both heavy and happy. Their risotto was a spicy perfection which didn't come as a surprise as all their pastas are so. My boyfriend enjoyed his fettucine and found the portions sizes to be decent...he is 6'2 and with a huge appetite that always causes him problems in feeding himself.
Don't try be fooled by overtly Mexican decoration of this place. Anyone with a little bit of knowledge about mexican food will know that this place is far from authentic. More like american or canadianized mexican food. The chicken in my santa fe quesadilla tasted bland and came much after I had ordered my chimichanga pacifico. Service was S L O W, even getting the menus was a task that took longer to complete than usual.
As I am for Victoria, I know that if i want to have breakfast at the Blue Fox, Im gonna have to line up at 7am for their breakfast. So when I dragged my friend out at 7am to come here, she was definitely in the worst of moods. This quickly changed once she got a taste of the food. Their eggs benny are delicious, I personally like going for the classic but my friend really enjoyed her moroccan chicken benny. She said it was incredibly good. This place is known for their bennys, so just be careful because there are sooo many types to choose from. Not only is the food fresh, but so is their coffee!
Of all the places that offer seafood and oysters in Victoria, id say this one has one of the best. Their clams, mussels, oysters are exquisite..the only thing that is not so much is their service. I have been here a couple of times for lunch and dinner and their dinner always seems to be bad. Maybe its the servers are tired or something but the service is always kinda spotty, especially at nite.
So when my best friend whose from out of town wanted to try dinner here, i was a little weary.I didn't want her to have a bad meal in my home city! But upon her insistance, came here. I had made a reservation and called in to check for it just in case. Phew! It was there and when we came, it was not that busy. But after the appies, things started to get slow because people were coming in like crazy. It was a busy nite, but luckily that didnt spoil the waitresses' mood or the food. Our steamed clams & mussels were delicious, we ordered large just in case to not get underserved. Also the bouillabaisse did not disappoint it was one of the best ive had!
It's been a while since i've come here but the other day when my boyfriend and I were in downtown, we decided to revisit it. We hadn't been here for a while because the service was a fail last time but we thought it was time to give it another shot. The food was always good so we decided to go one more time, just to try.
We went at 6 pm so it was jam packed when we entered and had to wait for a seat. It is not your typical Indian restaurant but still happens to be one of the best places for Indian food in Victoria. We reconfirmed it! The service this time was good, no rude servers and food was not mixed up. It did come kinda late thou, but it was a busy nite. Loved the onion bhajia & fish masala. WILL BE BACK GUYS!
Gaby's is tucked away in a marina and RV park called West Bay. Located in Esquimalt. The new owners are doing a very good job of menu items that appeal. Food is prepared from scratch on site. Some items like the homemade pies are a continuation of its previous time as the Princess Mary. Specials surprise you. My favourite so far was the Oyster Pie.
Prices are reasonable. Service friendly. A new area furnished with flat screenTV's with a sports bar atmosphere is separate from the diners who come for the view and the food.
Truly a 'hidden' gem.

Avoid - in our experience the portions of fish & chips are woefully small, while the prices remain relatively high. We were not given our complete order, which we only noticed when we got home & despite repeated requests for some kind of compensation, nothing has ever been forthcoming. A rip-off. We also had to wait 1/2hr for a take-out !
I stopped on the way to an appointment because I was hungry and needed quick, fast food... What I got was disbelieved when I pointed out that my order (pre-paid) went missing (people coming in after me were getting their burgers).. When they realized I wasn't going away.. gave me a cheeseburger and fries... I'm woofing it down because now I'm going to be late (and I'm starving)... last bite THERE'S GREEN MOLD ON THE BOTTOM OF THE BUN....... DON'T EAT AT THIS DQ!!!
