We (a group of U of A students) tried this place out recently for lunch. They have a good buffet selection with a lot of vegetarian options. Service was good and water was refilled at an alarming rate. The bread coming with the buffet was pretty good and came in several possible flavours. Overall we were happy with Daawat and will be returning in the future.

The Good, Bad, Mediocre, and the Ugly at Pampa's
By Canucksoverseas of Edmonton Alberta (1 Review)
Submitted Saturday, November 26, 2011 - 12:09pm [Dine in]

Don't waste your time and money at this overpriced restaurant with mediocre food and a greedy owner with poor personal customer service and business building training.

The Good: The Serving Staff were Great! We had a wonderful waitress, and the guys that bring around the meat were hilarious! They really made the evening enjoyable and full of laughter with their interactions at the table! You are to be commended!

The Bad: The food was way overpriced for what we received in quality of taste and flavour.

The Mediocre: The food.

SALAD: I love salad bars - and their presentation was very pretty. But I barely ate more than one or two bites of each dish that I tried, and had to spit out one of them. There was nothing that wowed me even a little. The only saving grace was the fresh mango slices. We were all hoping for pineapple... but none until the very end of the night, and it was sliced sliver thin and layered on the plate with pork - meaning my friend that cannot eat pork couldn't have ANY pineapple. It was also very weird to have the salad dressings right after the plates. So are we supposed to go past, get our salads, and THEN go back to the start of the line to get to the dressings again? i gave up!

MEAT: At other brazillian restaurants, I have been jokingly accused of making 'inapropriate sounds' while fully enjoying the beautiful flavours of the many different cuts of meat. At PAMPA's however, I was very dissappointed! Only ONE of the 10 cuts of meat warrented a 'wow' experience - the rest were mediocre... and FOUR of them tasted like LIVER! *BLECH*!

DESSERT: Ordered separately at an additional charge - which was far overpriced for what we got. We were having a birthday party and did not see anything we could order as a 'birthday cake'... so ordered some other items instead just because the dessert menu items looked interesting. Enjoyable, but not 'wow', and about double the price it deserved.

The ugly - The Owner: Oscar.

So once everyone was completely finished with what the restaurant had to offer, I brought out 2 'backup' birthday cupcakes, because a birthday just isn't a birthday without cake (and the restaurant did not have cake to offer that we could buy for this purpose). I knew their bellies would be full, but just wanted a photo with the 2 birthday people before they could put the cupcakes back in the box and take them home to have the next day. One person chose to put theirs back, the other person ate theirs.

When the bill came - we were shocked and surprised to be charged $18/ DOLLARS CAKE PLATING SERVICE CHARGE!!!!! SERIOUSLY? a labour/service charge for a labour and service that they never performed! To add insult to injury - it was explained that the charge was based on $3 per person for every person at the table of 6! Regardless of the fact that only 2 cupcakes were on the table, and only 1 was consumed, and that no service of any kind was performed by the restaurant staff. The owner noticed the cupakes and ordered the waitress to add the charge to the bill. So we asked to speak with him to sort it out. We comfirmed that this surprise fee/policy was not posted anywhere in the restaurant (and have since confirmed that it is also not posted on their website).

The proper thing to do:

Option 1: at the time of noticing the cupcakes, approach the table immediately and politely explain the policy - allowing us to put the cupcakes away without any hard feelings, nor any further action, leaving the owner with his dignity and the customers with a pleasant experience. If the customer doesn't understand there is a problem, they cannot make informed decisions. Offering that information is a service to the customer. It makes the restaurant look good at the end of the day.

Option 2: if they didn't have the courage to perform option 1, and just wanted to see if we would notice the extra charge, or NOT notice it an pay without knowing... then at the time of being questioned, the smart thing to do would be to either wave it, OR to at the very least seek the middle ground. As a matter of principle - math has to make sense. If we brought in 2 cupcakes to serve and didn't know about the fee, then we should pay $3 x 2 cupcakes. So reducing the fee to $6 would have shown that the owner is reasonable and has compassion, and wants these 6 people and all of their friends and family to return.

Oscar - the owner - did not care about the math of 2 cupcakes vs 6 people vs no labour or service provided. And would not back down. Is $18 really worth the loss to reputation and future business? or in this case - if option 2 had ensued - is $12 really worth it? Apparently Oscar is greedy enough that he wants the $12 so bad right now he is willing to put blinders on and refuse to think of the future ramifications of his actions on his business.

Oscar - there is a lot of training out there for you in the realm of customer service, and proper choices and recourse to PROSPER and BUILD your business. I hope you put that precious $18 towards enrolling in such education! Especially since one member of our party who had been talking earlier in the evening about this being a good choice for her Father's birthday of 15 people - has now abruptly cancelled any such thoughts! But it's just as well... she had never been to other Brazillian restaurants of this nature and therefore had no comparison to base the quality of the food, and therefore to think of 15 people paying that overpriced charge is hard to fathom anyways!

Great Atmosphere, Pool, Karaoke
By cshaiku of Edmonton, Alberta (1 Review)
Submitted Sunday, November 6, 2011 - 3:19am [Dine in]

I love hanging out here after work and weekends, as I get to meet friendly people, play pool while waiting my turn to sing, and best of all, munch on some awesome pizza.

I go about 3-4 times a week, its near my place so a great location for me to unwind and enjoy some good company. There are many different social circles there, from trades to retail to I.T. so its always something different to talk about. Everyone has fun, its a pleasant and not overly loud atmosphere whatsoever, which makes enjoying their food and Karaoke a pleasure.

Pool is $1.25 per game, they have 7 bar style tables on the far side of the place, and they're in decent shape. Plenty of seating both in the sports side (where the pool tables and huge projector screen are), and the lounge side (where the Karaoke singers usually sing at). The bar is situated smack dab in the middle of the place, and has plenty of easy access bar chairs all around it. Plenty of screens located above and around the bar too.

There are 3 projected screens, two of which are dedicated to showing two sports feeds, the third being used for the Karaoke singers. The sound system is very decent while not being too loud, as it projects sound approx 8-10' up, and over the entire place, and not downward. Very nice, its easy enough to have decent conversations without feeling like you're competing against a barrage of noise.

There are 3 VLT terminals at the back of the sports side, a pinball game and shooting/hunter game near the washrooms corridor, and a modern music Tunes jukebox which can download new songs if required from its internet server.

The Karaoke is the main reason why I visit, with over 13,000 songs to choose from and more added quite frequently, there's never a lack of material to attempt to sing. From my brief time there so far I've witnessed some AMAZING singers who should be laying down track, they're that good. Rosario's has a great reputation for attracting talented and humble singers, so its a pleasure just to hang out for a few hours to listen to them sing, even if there are the odd amateurs who butcher a few songs. :) Its so worth it.

The staff are very friendly, albeit due to the constant influx of customers they can be a bit overwhelmed with taking orders, so do be patient. Food is served until at least midnight, and their menu is quite comprehensive for a sports bar venue such as this. I have to say, the Pizza is probably the BEST in Edmonton, and take it from me, I love food. As an I.T. guy who has worked at night, finding decent pizza in this city is damn annoying. It was truly a very satisfying experience to enjoy their pizza for the first time and be blown away by how good it was.

Regarding drinks, I'm fairly certain they have a fair (great, even) selection of beer, wine, and hard liquor, but as I'm not a drinker I will only go by memory as to seeing a lot of different labels being used.

I think that about covers my review, and do hope it helps pique the interest of future customers. Please feel free to add comments here (if applicable).

This is an amazing restaurant/lounge. Wether eating in the bar or the restaurant you are guaranteed to find a great atmosphere. The only thing that people should be aware of is the fact that the lounge at this location is frequented by trades. As anyone knows trades have a different way of speaking and that they frequently use vulgar language which may offend some. Other than that the staff are wonderful in both sides. Anyone who enjoys rum should have C.C. make them a Zombie. Ive been told that this is her drink. The restaurant is always clean, the staff are very presentable and the washrooms wont leave you with the willys. The bar is full of true Esks/Oilers fans and everyone is welcome. The crowd that does the Esks express is well behaved and compared to other locations will not make those who are not big drinkers uncomfortable. All in all the prices are excellent, the staff will make you feel welcome and you will definitely want to come back again!!

Very good value.

I had ordered a Quesadilla and a prawn salad roll..
They haven't mastered the art of a salad roll (was half ripped from overstuffing the salad) plus they jip you in the prawns - you only receive two, where normally salad rolls have 3-4 prawns
The Quesadilla was good, but really small and not worth the price... I'll stick to Mucho Burrito for Quesadilla's

Very Enjoyable New Year's Day Buffet

Our extended family (19 of us including 3 children under 4) decided to try the New Year's Day Buffet at Daltons Restaurant. There was a nice variety in the food - both hot and cold dishes - with a good selection of desserts. Everyone was pleased with the food and found something they liked. The atmosphere was quiet and they were able to seat us all together at a long table near the back of the restaurant. It was an excellent experience for our family and we will definitely plan on returning next year (if not before).

Nothing special or outstanding. Price was a little high for their buffet lunch. Needed more varieties.
Rice was at the far end of the buffet line away from the main sitting area. Only had four meat dishes. One was beef curry, one was lamb curry and two chicken dishes.

I have been eating at Happy Gardens since the 80's and it is one of the rare places that has stayed consistently good ! It is small and intimate, a little off the main road so you have to know where you are going. I doubt they get many walk-ins except for people in Parkallen neighborhood yet they are still thriving. Great food for great value.

When I went to this location there were only one other customer eating; as I approached the counter the lady in a blue striped shirt (I think she was a supervisor or a key holder) was standing infront of the till facing to her right talking to a guy in street clothes. I waited for her to ask me my order and finally five minutes later she faced me and asked for my order.

After I gave her my order and receiving my order I walked over to a table on the right side of the dining room. Two minutes later an employee started to vacuum the rug on the right side of the dining room. He kept vacuuming around my table and I didn't know why he couldn't have started on the left side of the dining room.
I rushed to eat my burger because the sound of the vacuum was giving me a headache.

As a customer I didn't feel welcome and felt rushed to leave so I won't be back to this location anymore.

During a cool rainy day I stopped at Brookyn's Pub for a coffee and baileys. When the server brought me the bill she had charged me $5.25 for the baileys and $1.67 for the coffee. The total for one drink was $7.00. If someone orders a coffee and baileys wouldn't the coffee be included in the price.

Guess I will be going somewhere else.

This is place for Butter Chicken
By Peepers of Vancouver (12 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, August 15, 2010 - 5:08pm [Dine in]

I know this place as Punjab Sweets. Best butter chicken I have ever had. Have tried this dish a few dozen times at various restaurants across the country, as well as making it in my own kitchen. This is the place to go on 34th ave for the buffet. Maurya seems a bit safe and pricey and same goes for the New Asian Village (NAV), which seems is now officially a chain restaurant. New Asian is great for luxurious, long evening meals, but go to Punjab Sweets if it's a mid-day buffet you're hankering for. You can also grab a quick takeout - a nice treat is a vegetarian samosa slathered in cholay (curried chickpeas) - YUM. I usually eat mine in the car before I make it home (er...as a passanger, or parked). This is the place to come for great value. Parking can be tight, and it's in what looks like a former Ponderosa restaurant. Not certain, but I think they still have the wagon-wheel chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. You have to love that! There is counter service for samosa and various other savouries and sweets. Buffet is good value, and fresh naan made to order. Service at counter can be a bit hectic - as of my last visit, no 'take a number' system in place, and the staff in the kitchen seem a bit harried at times when the takeout orders are piling up. Veggie samosas are great too!

This restaurant came highly recommended from a family who have lived in various countries, and know their indian cuisine. I have been three times, and must say I am thrilled to be 'in the know' now. They have a massive selection of bottled beer from all around the world which can be viewed in the vertical glass coolers that line the entrance hallway. Beautiful rich, luscious decor. I have brought my finicky 9 year old and my vegetarian nephew - both leave stuffed and happy. Something for all of us here. Have dined buffet twice, and a la carte once. Both were wonderful. Fresh, made to order naan, and the doting chefs are always available at the buffet table, ready to assist. Table service is very good - friendly, competent, unobtrusive. ....I LOVE the white-guy waiter. Seems a bit out of place, but he's been there whenever we have and he sure knows his stuff!

This is a great place. Food is amazing, always something new to try. You know you are in good hands, can tell there is alot of caring put into the preparation and serving of the food. Service can be sketchy and hectic as the place can get busy and appears to be family run. However, there is genuine concern that you are enjoying the food. Staff are happy (and proud) to explain different dishes.

Great food, but where's the competition
By Peepers of Vancouver (12 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, August 15, 2010 - 4:28pm [Dine in]

This place tries a bit too hard with the young, eager wait staff. They seem to always have a new gaggle of fresh-faced kids experiencing their first job from the surrounding neighborhoods. Chirpy and energetic doesn't always equate to competent table service, which seems more chain restaurant oriented than higher end casual Italian. Service doesn't seem to reflect the menu. The Sunday night special of various pastas is a nice idea, generous for sharing, and taking home leftovers. However, the 1/2 dozen times I have dined here, I usually feel somewhat dissatisfied with the experience. Place is usually packed, they turn a good profit, but I sure wish there was competition nearby. The time before last, I made the mistake of looking down at the carpeting. It is the most disgusting filthy carpet I have seen in a restaurant still carrying a license. I assumed it was due for a cleaning, being spring and all. I was wrong, as I made the mistake of looking down on the last visit. I try hard to like this place, what comes from the kitchen is solid. They have to get it together in the front - it's a bit of a joke.

I came here for milkshakes when I was a kid, then sort of forgot about the place. Reintroduced recently, and have gone with kids, seniors, teens. There is great value - something for everyone. I was brought here for mother's day brunch, and did not expect much. Decided to order the eggs benedict and was totally surprised at the quality. I am somewhat of an expert as I have consumed many versions of this dish with varying successes and failures, mostly due to the sauce. ...and have also succeeded and failed making hollandaise a number of times. I am certain it's the real deal, homemade version here. ....and very good at that! Service is polite and prompt. The dinner specials are incredible value with soup/salad, large entree and dessert. One of our favourites is the pork chop dinner with mashed potatoes.

This is excellent pizza. Good sauce, the right amount of toppings, generous cheese, atop the old-style heavier, slightly sweet crust. When you're not in the mood for gimmicky and tedious thin crust pizza from the new trendoid joints , this is the way to go. We have ordered many times over the years and have never been disappointed. Sure would be nice if the owners of this sad Petrolia strip mall would make a move one way or the other and Grandma opened a restaurant. It may be that Grandma Pizza's owners may be set on delivery business only, but I could sure see my husband and I enjoying many a pie with a pitcher of draft. ....along with many other peeps and families from the 'hood.

Always pleasantly surprised with the raw specials. Service is friendly and competent. Nice atmosphere, we like the tatami rooms, and the beer is always cold. Not too fond of the house special roll containing the asian pickle, however, all other rolls are very generous and fresh. We moved from Vancouver 4 years ago, and this became our number 1 affordable sushi joint (after the 'once in a while', more expensive Wasabi in Lendrum). Yokozuna is the better choice for economy and ambiance.
