We're tempted to maybe even give 5 stars on the food. It was that good. We were not expecting such a place in little ol' Duncan. The great thing is that they use almost all ingredients from the local farms or fishermen, and it's nearly all organic in the Cowichan Valley.
Quaint English/Tudor style place if you like that sort of decor. We stayed over as B&B guests.
The breakfast/brunch was very good. The hash browns are the best we've ever had, by far. It's elevated to something really fantastic. We're not the only ones, some other guests from UK also said the same thing.
Dinner was incredible. Onion soup was 2nd best we've ever had, the apple-butternut squash bisque was even better. The worst dish of the night was still really good. Wild mushroom & goat cheese strudel, the only complaint was that the goat cheese slightly overwhelmed the flavour of the mushrooms. Mussels were great, but I guess good mussels are hard to mess up. On to the mains, which we had elk with plum compote (very nice and innovative!) and a salmon steak special. 2 big coho steaks, smothered in fresh local clams. So good! The surprises didn't end there, the lemon tart & ginger ice cream was a big hit, especially the ginger ice cream. Didn't think we'd like ginger ice cream, but oh we were so surprised.
All of the food they cook is seasoned just enough to let the main ingredients shine through and nothing is very greasy/oily.
We were fully, fully stuffed, but it was perhaps the first time we were at that point and felt fine afterwards. The next morning left us hungry and hankering for more, which is a fine testament to the quality of the ingredients and the cooking.
This is worth a return visit, even from Vancouver. If you're from Victoria or Nanaimo, you'd be crazy not to make a stop. Just be sure to have a reservation.
My S.O. and I recently moved the area. We're both foodies and enjoying cooking up fancy gourmet meals at home. I've lived and travelled globally and have a very good understanding of fine cuisine and service. Even if you're expectations are not 5-star and you just come in for the special BBQ ribs on a Friday night as advertised by the Q.Inn do not be surprised if it ends up dry and cold on your plate, along with the owners reluctant "you don't have to pay for that" comment. Well, my S.O. was hungry and still wanted food. Fine if you take it off the bill but would you mind serving a fresh, warm portion ? Afterall, it's your SPECIAL!! Turns out it was on the bill afterall. "You ordered it again", was the owners excuse. Sure, my lady had to watch me eat and then her's came after I finished. Surely you'd pay full $$$ for that service ??

Wow....what can I say, our evening was out of this world. The food was top notch, we ordered Stuffed Mushroom Caps topped with lobster cream sauce and the best Caesar Salad we've experienced in a long time. We found a great selection of local wines along with other great wines from British Columbia being featured so of course we ordered a bottle. We sipped our wine and then had to make decisions on our main course as this was a very hard thing to do indeed. How do you decide between all of the great items. My wife order the Fresh Fish feature that was so good she wanted to move in, my Rack of Lamb was done to perfection as so so good. The service was excellent and our evening was very nice, we will be back!
