Good meeting place if food is not important to you.

A few friends and i had lunch there recently. We enjoyed each other's company, the ambiance and that was about it.
Everyone was disappointed in their lunch. I had greek salad and it was very bad. Ladner has hothouses growing tomatoes close by yet the tomatoes were obviously imported from a really long ways away. There was a little feta and a few olives on the salad. I felt ripped off paying for it.
The server seemed impatient, busy {maybe understaffing?} and didn't like to answer questions.
Ladner is a farming community and has a market during the summer. It certainly appears that not much if any local produce makes it's way into this place.
This restaurant has a lovely setting with a patio. If this is the most important thing to you, then Taverna Gorgona is for you.

On the very last day of the Ladner Market - a rainy day, too, - we scouted out this fine restaurant for a special occasion meal. We were not sorry.

Unfortunates first: I was disappointed in the appetizer I ordered, which was the scallops wrapped in bacon dish. The best part was the bacon; however, it was the scallops I had looked forward to enjoying. They were mushy and very fishy. As well, the dessert I ordered was disappointing. It did not seem to have been freshly made, and although the presentation was pretty with its drizzled chocolate and cinnamon, since I did not want chocolate (unbelievable, I know!) it robbed the custard of its subtleness if there was any to be found. My dining partners wisely chose the cheesecake, which they enjoyed.

The fortunate: All that having been written, the entrees were very good – and after all, that is what we traveled here to enjoy! The roast lamb dinners were ample and delicious by report. My dish, the Korinthos Chicken was scrumptious and ample enough that I carried some home to later enjoy. The chicken was moist and tasty - and light enough. I would order it again. The rice was nicely flavored – moist and interesting. The potato, too, was moist and pleasant with its lemon and other seasonings that came through well. Those accompaniments along with the Greek salad and our bright, cheerful wait person, added up to a really nice meal in a pleasant venue on a chilly late afternoon. We will return.

Failing grade!

Was always pleased with the food & service when Nikos owned the place. Since he sold it, both have been hit & miss, at best. On our last visit (yes, it will be the LAST time we ever eat here) it hit an alltime low.
Visited on a Thursday evening and arrived at 5:30. Restaurant was not busy, but still had to stand in front hallway for almost 10 minutes before we were acknowledged. It then took another 5 minutes for someone to come over and seat us - despite all the empty tables that were available!
We were taken to the little raised area to the side of the bar and squeezed into a tiny corner behind four very large folks occupying the adjacent table. They couldn't/wouldn't move their chairs in towards their own table so we had to be acrobats to get into our seats - why, when so many other tables were available was this where we had to be seated? Also, there was a strong smell of bathroom deodorizer in the area. not very appetizing!
Our drink order was taken and arrived promptly. Unfortunately, my wineglass came with a large smear of red lipstick on the rim. Server was unfazed when I pointed this out to her - she seemed to wonder why I wouldn't drink from a dirty glass! I suspect she took my wine glass back and just wiped the lipstick off because the new glass was smudgy around the edges. Yuck!
We ordered Souvlaki - hubby had beef, I had chicken. Beef was gristly, chewy, and overdone - not a pleasant experience at all. Chicken was so dry it was like eating sawdust. Rice was cold and clumpy. Potato was only partly cooked - still hard in the center. Greek salad was mostly soggy, as if it had been sitting for a day or so before being served. Waitress did not come back to ask how our food was after serving it- she probably couldn't be bothered trying to manouver by that table of large folks either!
When she finally picked up our barely eaten dinners, she didn't even ask if we had a problem with the food. We had to inform her that the meal was almost inedible. She said sorry, and left with our plates. She came back a few minutes later with the free dessert and was quick to let us know that she put a little extra on the plate because of the problem with dinner! The extra teaspoonful did not make up for both of us still being hungry!
Nikos would have come out personally to check and see if we liked our meal. If there had been a problem, he would have made sure it was fixed. Here, no one seemed to care. We couldn't eat the lousy meal and we were billed for it with no discount for the inedible food.
That's it - we won't be back unless the restaurant gets different owners & management who actually care about the customers and have a clue about what good food is.
I'd give this place a D- if I had to grade it!

New owners - Better Dining
By jsb of Delta, BC (1 Review)

If you have not visited Taverna Gorgona since new owners took over in December 2009, visit again.

There has been a remarkable improvement in the food, although the new owners have maintained menu (with minor adjustments). The family, from Greece, knows how to cook. Appearance and freshness of the food were excellent. The decor is the same, but this is really an entirely different experience from days of yesteryear.

We went on a Saturday night. The restaurant was busy, but the staff was able to easily handle everything, as was the kitchen. We were advised early that a large party could slow down our order. We were not rushed in our decisions, however, and when our order was placed, wait time was very good (15-20 min for each course).

For starters we tried saganaki and calamari, both of which were very well executed. The calamari was moist, nicely breaded, and not overcooked. The saganaki was a bit small to share with four people, a nice portion for two, and was served with a quartered pita bread - again, a nice amount.

The mousaka was unbelievably good; the souvlaki excellent. A chicken and prawn linguini in a cream sauce was nicely done (pasta a bit overcooked for my taste) and the sauce was fresh and not cloying. Portion sizes were not quite as overindulgent as some Greek restaurants tend to be, which was welcome.

We were treated to a complimentary dessert - Ekmek, made in the restaurant (not ordered from a food service company - hooray!) - which was absolutely delicious, the custard light, and fresh.

We will go again - and so should you!

Ladner loves Taverna Gorgona! Always a hot spot for lunch or dinner. Take out is ready SO fast. Great prices and very large servings. We love the calamari. Lively place when belly dancer performs. Outdoor patio seating is nice in the summer. Free dessert sometimes is always a nice touch. Friendly wait staff.
