E's Up Dining has been on our list of restaurant eat-outs. My wife & I have become regulars. Tonight, March 12/10, my wife had a green salad, mushroom appetizer and basa fish dinner with rice & veggies cooked to perfection. My meal was a special request. I gave Sheryl two hours notice as the meal was not on the menu. I had the tomatoe spicy sausage soup, mushroom appetizer, pan-fried chicken livers, garlic-sauteed asparagus with rice. This was all prepared and presented with her special touch. A meal that looked good but tasted even better than good. We were so full that we ended up taking home a delicious homemade raisen/blueberry dessert to enjoy later. Another good dining experience, great food, service, atmosphere, great dining value, plus flowers presented by our waitress as we were leaving. Thank you E's Up Dining. Try this hidden gem.

I recommend this Japanese Restaurant to everyone that's on their way to the ferries. It's so much better than eating ferry food!! I very much enjoyed their Tiger Roll. It came with salad and was a complete meal for me. =) The staff are friendly and the service was excellent. I will definitely go back!

Ladner loves Taverna Gorgona! Always a hot spot for lunch or dinner. Take out is ready SO fast. Great prices and very large servings. We love the calamari. Lively place when belly dancer performs. Outdoor patio seating is nice in the summer. Free dessert sometimes is always a nice touch. Friendly wait staff.

Certainly much better than I was expecting,

My boyfriend and I went to this Ricky's mostly out of desperation. We were fed us with everything else close by and were very pleasantly surprised with the experience.

We were quickly seated by a friendly and hospitable young lady who was attentive and made a great Shirley Temple. We shared the steak and full rack of BBQ ribs along with curly fries and a ceasar salad. Other than the sides being a bit too small for two people to share [which is understandable] our meal was excellent. The food arrived in a timely manner, our steak was a perfect medium rare and the ribs were tender but with a bit too much sauce for my liking. The only thing truly terrible about the place is the atmosphere. The place is outdated, ugly and utterly tasteless. The only redeeming point is how comfortable it feels. The booths are great and this is definitely a place you could go in your pajamas without feeling too out of place. Overall, very low key and unassuming.

Altogether our bill came to $41 for steak, ribs, ceasar salad, curly fries, one Shirley Temple and a bottle of Smirnoff Ice. We were completely satisfied and plan to return.

Excellent lunch buffet with garlic naan! Has unique chef's creation daily
By sadeater of Sadville (10 Reviews)

I love Desi Junction. It has great food. Everything is freshly cooked daily, and it shows. If ordering off their menu try the hot chicken wings desi-style, it's spicy and delicious. Their lunch buffet is excellent. Heads and shoulders over anything else offered in the Surrey area. They offer a variety of items, including at least 10 pickles and chutneys alone. There is a lentil soup. A small salad selection with chaats as well, including an unusual fresh fruit mixed with savoury spices. Appetizers include pakora's, and paneer poppers. While these may be lukewarm on the buffet they are still crispy and tasty. They bring you freshly cooked naan to the table, and you can pick regular or garlic naan. The garlic naan has flecks of fresh minced garlic and is an awesome treat. The mains always include butter chicken, also be sure to try the Indian-Chinese style Chili Chicken. The veggie dishes change but always include something with paneer a fresh cheese in it. The last time I was there they included masala fish. Another time I was there they had rasmalai on their buffet. Their rasmalai is delicious I always order it off the menu as well. The best part of the buffet and something that is unique that they do daily is that they have a chef cook a different dish daily as part of the buffet. They set up the cooking area at the end of the buffet. It's very neat and sort of whet's your appetite. Of the two times I was there once they had Aloo Tiki an appetizer as the special dish. Once it was cooked they brought it to your table as well. This was one of the best aloo tiki's I ever had! The other time was incredibly special as they were making fresh jalebi's. These were delicate and were thin rectangular shaped coils. Nothing like the sweet store jalebi's, which I don't even like. Fresh from the hot oil with a quick dip in the syrup, these crispy sweet warm treats were amazing with the chai's we had ordered to go with these. Phone ahead to see if it is jaleebi day, it was an amazing foodie experience. Their lunch buffet is a good value for $12 as there is a wide selection. All of their food is freshly prepared with care, they have an open kitchen. Highly recommended.

This has truly become one of our favorite restaurant of any cuisine. The lamb is the best around. The calamari is my favorite always fresh and lightly breaded. The owner always comes out to visit the patrons during dinner offering free shots. It is quaint, fun and a great value. I recommend this place to everyone.

I went with a group for the lunch buffet. Many of the items that should be hot like the fish and veggie pakoras were stone cold. The butter chicken was ok but there was very little I found to be appealing. It is way over priced for what is offered. Won't go back as there are far better Indian restaurants in the area.

Illuminate has lost it's lustre
By VJB of abbotsford (96 Reviews)

We have been going to Illuminate for a number of years. We used to consider it a real gem but they have declined so much in the last year that we are removing them from our list of places to dine.

When we first started going the prices were reasonable. They are not in the busy downtown area so they were not charging downtown prices. They have adjusted their pricing and prices are now comparable to what you would pay at a top end restaurant like Il Giardino (our favorite). This may not be so hard to swallow if the quality of food, ambiance etc was in line with our experiences Il Giardino but it isn't. Over the last while they have cut down on the portions that they serve as well as raised the prices. This is not a good combination. As my husband said last night "If I'm going to pay the kind of money that Illuminate is charging now I'd rather go to Il Giardino." The Tuscan chicken used to be half a chicken, now it's just the chicken breast. When we were there just before New Year's I ordered the steak with peppercorn sauce. It was bland, bland, bland. For $34.00 it should be exceptional. When we mentioned it to the waiter (after dinner) as I didn't want to make a fuss he graciously compted us dessert. We decided to give them another try - maybe it was just an off night. Last night hubby had the chicken, he mentioned to the waiter that he was disappointed that it was no longer half chicken but is just the chicken breast, we were given a complimentary dessert again. I had the special of the day sablefish and it was perfectly cooked but the only accompaniment was beans, beans and more beans (not very interesting). This place has gone so far downhill that we will not return.

The service is okay. Our waiter did not mention one of the specials of the day. I heard another waiter telling his table about the special and it was something I would have ordered (maybe it had something other than beans served with it). Our water was not refilled and we had to top up the wine ourselves on occasion. This is on an evening that was not busy. There also was no quality check it was left up to us to mention that we were disappointed with the accompaniments and the changes to the chicken. When we mentioned it our waiter said that he thought the chicken was better the way it used to be. Why mess with success?

The ambiance is nice but certainly it is not of a calibre that justifies the prices they are now charging.

It's too bad, we used to really enjoy this restaurant. Not recommended.

We have been to this restaurant on numerous occasions but they have messed up for two Birthdays. We had made prior arrangements to have my wife's Birthday and my Birthday on different dates celebrated there with our kids. They forgot! It was my Birthday that my wife was almost in tears over. She had brought this to the owner's (Maria)attention when we left. She was apologetic about it and offered a complimentary dinner for us but my wife did not want to return there. It took almost a year later for us to return but "as expected" no one knew anything about the free dinner. Maria never returned my phone call but we sucked it up and ate there anyways. Everything was good on that night. All I'm saying folks is keep reminding them if you have a special event planned there otherwise there will be dissapointment.

Every time I go to this restaurant the food is always fresh and tastey and prepared so perfectly... my favorite dishes are the Curry Chicken and Chicken Biryani! Oh, and the Garlic Naan is absolutely amazing... with cilantro and of course garlic and it's always fresh, and warm, tender and slightly crispy on the outsides!!!

It's not a fancy restaurant, but the atmosphere is warm, inviting and I like that they spend their money on quality food, rather than wasting it on appearance. All I can say about is the food is absolutely amazing and the best indian food my husband and I have ever had!!!

Third dissappointment

We visited this location three weeks ago. We have already had two bad experiences prior to this, but we thought, third time may be the charm. Wrong!

Upon arriving, two hostesses were at the front but did not help us, they continued chatting about their weekend. Our friend saw us and waved us over. Our server came, took drinks. Came back with drinks, offered an appy. We got the appy to start, twenty minutes later, i called her over and asked if she forgot to punch our order in. She said it would be right out. She came out ten minutes later with said raw appy. (dough was not cooked) She said the manager is taking care of it because it took so long. Fine.

We finished our appies and were now waiting for our meals, remember it has been almost 40 minutes since we sat down. We wait another ten minutes, no food. Another table that came in after us, received their food! We were not too impressed.

My friend went to the front to ask to speak to the manager. they spoke at the front for about five minutes or so. He comes back to the table and the "manager" comes to the table and says your food is ready, do you want it? At this point, we dont want it, due to having to wait so long and the lack of insincerity within this so called manager. We say no. She says well its just gonna get thrown away so you might as well take it. I'll pack it up for you. We tell her that is not the point. She offers it to us once again and we decline.

We ask for the bill, pay for our drinks and leave. the 'manager' never once offered an apology of any sort. We brought this incident to the head office and all they did was forward us a letter that they use for everyone else.

Dear Copy,

blah blah blah

Even if I was in Japan, I would still go to Akari

I agree with Teej that some of their decor isn't the best however I disagree with monmon that their service is slow.

But why do I give it five stars? Because they have served fantastic Japanese cuisine time and time again. I hesitate to use the word 'authentic' too often, but I can say that Akari is easily one of the top authentic Japanese restaurants in the Lower Mainland. Service has always been personable from the floor staff, to the chefs to the management.I was sitting at the sushi bar, so I engaged three of the chefs behind the bar about what I ought not to miss on the menu, and they served up a great meal which included fresh oysters, bincho, tai, ikura, ika and ebi- all freshly prepared, sliced in the traditional way and generously portioned. Everything was beautifully presented and the rice was seasoned just right. I can tell that the chef and the owner did take the time to pick the little details. The bonus was that it only cost me $25, what would easily cost me $50 for this level of quality.

The seared scallops on greens, though was easily the highlight. The citrus chili vinaigrette paired nicely with the rich sake scallops. It was absolutely stellar.

In summary, Akari is a hidden gem in Delta. A must go if you're in the area.

Finally a great Japanese restaurant in Ladner. If your looking for some great new tastes for your Japanese palate this is the place to try. Excellent service. Very polite and efficient staff who are not afraid to say "Thank You" and the food is superb. I have dined at many Japanese restaurants around the world and this is one of the best yet.

The cooked food is brought to your table steaming. The sushi and sashimi portions are large and fresh. The use of different spices is a welcome to the old blah taste of other restaurants. I have yet to try a dish that I did not like.

I have entertained friends and business associates at the Oki Doki and all have raved about the cuisine and have promised to return. Try this "not fancy" restaurant for the food. I know you will return.

First Experience With High Tea
By o1goodgirl of Surrey (6 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, January 4, 2010 - 1:14pm

I attended High Tea Noon with the ladies of my family for the first time at Applewood Country.

I arrived first and was left waiting in the lobby for about 15 minutes unattended by any of the employees. It did give me a chance to look around as they do have a bakery and gift shop connected to the tea room. They sell trinkets, souvenirs and decors.

When we got seated in the tea room, I noticed the environment was authentic like you would expect at your Grandma's house. Such as mismatching chairs, table cloths, and knick knacks on the walls. To add to the ambiance they provided accessories like hats and gloves, which I thought was fun.

The service was very slow, we were seated at 12pm and didnt leave until 2pm even though there were only 3 dishes served. At times we couldn't catch our server's attention at all. Although when we did, they were exceptionally friendly.

The food was very beautifully presented in tier stands. But I did not find it fresh or warm. We had Scones, Cupcakes, and Mini Meat Pies. They had an array of delicious jams to accompany the food.

For the 5 of us, the total came out to be $115. I did not think it was worth the value for 1 pot of tea and 3 dainty dishes. I will not return but it was an interesting experience.

I have to chime in as well - this is my favourite Japanese restaurant in the area

The food really is incredible, and sitting in there feels like sitting in a restaurant in Japan. And yes, I've been to Japan, lol. It's a bit larger than what you see in Tokyo, but space is a lot cheaper here than there I suppose. But they flat out nailed the ambiance, seriously.

The only thing negative I could say it I find it a bit pricy unless you stick with the specials. I like to live a little and eat things out of the ordinary, and once my husband and I literally spent $70 between just the two of us. And neither of us is particularly heavy. But - that was probably our own fault - it's still cheaper than The Keg. And that $70 was the best Japanese meal I've had in years.

They do wonderful sushi, but they're not limited to just that. The udons, dons, tempura, you name it from the kitchen, is all just amazing as well.

I've actually had very good dim sum there - twice!

I'm so sorry the previous poster had such an awful experience there. I had a similar experience at Yummy Won Ton House, albeit not quite as bad.

Anyway, after trying the Lotus for dim sum once, it was an answer to my prayer for good dim sum on this side of the Fraser. I used to live not far from Chinatown, so I've really been missing it.

It's close to home and work, they do charge $3 per dish for the dim sum during the hours specified (even if the menu says $4.50), and you can get in and out reasonably quickly, which makes it perfect for work lunches. The ambiance is kinda lame, but I'm there for the quality of the food, which in my experience has been wonderful. I've been there four times now, I think, and have had great food every time.

Poor Service, Pricey, not going to return

We went as a big group, but most of people end up saying that they will never return. Even the organizer of the event said that she won't repeat.

First of all, the place is very pricey. Make things worse, every bit of slightest modification to the menu item costs money, and you are not informed up front. Tip is added by default, so that you have no say whether you like their service ;-(

The service is pretty poor. The poor service not only showed while you are dining there, one of us actually had her bad experience extended to days after. What happened is her credit card got swiped twice and charged twice. When she called back, it took the restaurant long time to fix the issue - well, to be precise, the issue is still not fixed - 4 or 5 days passed already.

The server rarely showed up through the event - that's usually pretty precise sign of bad service.

Food is only so so, which is the main reason why most of us said that they won't repeat.

two + two = four?

I ordered breakfast this morning, a "Basic Breakfast" and my co worker ordered her own order of some type of sandwich, we ordered it to be picked up.Along with my Basic Brekky comes 4 peices of bacon, so along with that I ordered some ham.She also ordered a side of bacon (let me mention now that she is a very loyal customer who eats there 3-4 days a week).

I went to pick up our breakfast, and because of my order (poached eggs) the eggs were in their own container.

When I got back, I started to eat my breakfast. That is when my co-worker said "hey, where is my bacon?"I was already eating, and she mentioned "how many peices do you have?"I said " well, they are cutt in half, so it looks like about 8 peices, which would equal 4 whole peices"She called E's up, and found out that her bacon was put into my order. We didn't understand. Why would her Bacon be in MY breakfast container? That doesn't make sense! Should they not have written on the container "all orders of bacon"?

I was eating hers and MINE?! That would equal 8 whole peices of bacon! I started questioning myself "Did I eat 4 peices of whole bacon on my way back to the office without realizing it?!"After about 2 phone calls and a few mins of discusing our order, they said they would make us more.

We couldn't go back at this time, so they said they could come drop it off (we work across the way). When her husband came to drop it off, he asked if I had gotten mobbed on the way to my co-worker. (I was hiding in the back because I was so embarresed). He didn't even say "sorry I didn't explain that we scam people into thinking there is 4 peices when there is only 2" or "No problem ladies, see you soon".

WHY DO THEY SAY IT IS 4 PEICES OF BACON, WHEN IT IS ONLY 2 (cutt in half) AND it was placed into my breakfast take out - how am I supposed to know it is my co-workers bacon in there as well? Her 2 halfs of bacon.......

They just lot me as a customer.

Oh, and Merry...uh...whatever..to you too.

Disappointing
By trishindelta of Delta (1 Review)
Submitted Friday, December 18, 2009 - 5:36pm

Had eaten in this restaurant about two years ago & found it to be a pleasant and somewhat upscale dining experience for South Delta. As a result, I was pleased when my husband took me there to celebrate my birthday. We went early on a quiet Tuesday evening at the beginning of December. We were seated in a nearly empty restaurant (2 other tables and one of them was just paying and leaving). So service should NOT have been an issue - but it was. Our server seated us and then disappeared for 10 minutes, did not offer to take our drink order or anything. We noticed the menu was no longer as upscale as it used to be - it's more in line with the pub next door now. Too bad. Server reappeared to seat another table and on the way back by us asked if we wanted anything?!? We said we were ready to order and this seemed to fluster her so she said she would be right back. 10 minutes later, she's finally back! She starts by telling us she's new. We were to hear this MANY times during the evening!! I ordered a glass of wine from the wine list and she immediately indicated she didn't know what that was since she was only a beer drinker herself. Great. I had to point out the wine I wanted on the list and she seemed to finally take note. We ordered appies and entrees, a Caesar salad and the Duck Breast for me, Scallops and a Gorgonzola Peppercorn Ribeye Steak for hubby. Our drinks finally showed up, after two more tables were brought in, seated and served THEIR drinks first! We did not even get the basket of bread that showed up on all the other tables when they were seated, nor was it offered. Appies showed up, and were unremarkable at best. Drinks were both empty by this time, but waitress simply grabbed the plates and headed out without asking if we wanted another. Meals did not show up for almost 20 more minutes, and when she put the plates down (forgetting who had ordered what and telling us,yet again, that she was new) we immediately saw that the order was wrong. My duck breast seemed fine, but hubby received a prime rib dinner. Not what he ordered. When we pointed this out to server, since she didn't notice, we were once again told she was new, and she would take it back and go check with the chef. As I sat with my rapidly cooling dinner in front of me, my husband urged me to start since it can't take long to get his steak. Wrong. He sat and watched me try to stall as long as I could while waiting for his meal, which took 20 more minutes! Waitress stopped by a couple more times to tell us she was new, to offer to get him soup while he was waiting, and finally brought a bread basket!! His dinner showed up just as I finished the last of mine, which by then was ice cold. Very poor service - he should have had his re-order go right to the front of the line in the kitchen but it obviously did not. So much for eating our dinners together! I nibbled at the remains of the bread basket (that we had to ask for while waiting for his meal) while hubby ate his entree. The other server in the restaurant (who was apparently TRAINING ours!)came over and stated that because of the problem, we could have free desserts. Hardly made up for the poor service so far. Then our server comes over and announces that the chef who makes dessert isn't in, so several items aren't available. We tried two items that were "specials" - a gingerbread type cake with caramel sauce and a pumpkin ice cream cake. Both were bland and uninteresting. The other server then came over again, this tme with our bill, and indicated that she had taken a whole 15% off. Any other restaurant that had messed up this badly would have taken off one or both meals as an apology, but this was clearly all we were getting. My birthday meal out was disgraceful, and we will not be back. Reasons: Poor Service and a lackluster menu with mediocre food. Note to owners: make sure your servers are educated about the menu and capable of doing the job before setting them loose on your paying customers. It's the least you can do!
