My wife and I had driven by Tenkai many times but never ventured in. We decided to drop by on a weekday evening.
The restaurant was relatively quiet at 6pm in the evening, with a few patrons in booths. We were cheerily greeted by the waitress and immediately seated.
The decor of the restaurant is older but clean. You can tell there were extensive renovations on top of the original flooring, but it looks nice.
We ordered a Sushi Combo A and a Tempura Udon to be able to try out a few items. The Sushi combo had 1 california roll, 1 dynamite roll, 2 salmon nigiri, 2 tuna nigir, and 2 ebi nigiri. All was fresh and standard sizes. The Tempura udon was piping hot, and the tempura was crisp. The tempura was a tad more oily that some places though.
The service was pretty much a one woman show, but she was very efficient and friendly. We were quite impressed.
Price wise the prices were a tad higher than we're used to, but not unreasonable. The bill for the 2 items came to around $25.
Overall I think we may come again if we're hungry and in the neighbourhood. It's a nice place to go with friends as it was peaceful enough to actually chat.
My wife and I have gone to Tenkai for nearly 3 years now and just keep going back, often about once a week - it's just that good. The restaurant is relatively large so you don't feel you're eavesdropping on the table next to you and the music is kept at a good volume so you can have a relaxing conversation - unlike many "trendier" sushi places.
The sushi quality has always been great - I usually go for negitoro rolls, tekka don, or chef's nigiri, but have tried most things now. Their starters are very good, especially the gyoza.
The staff are always very friendly (both the old and new management) and although the waiting staff are sometimes a bit casual, they are friendly and competent.
I have found that this is a great place to introduce people to sushi and Japanese food in general. My parents loved the teriaki and donburi, and my wife now experiments with sushi rolls and hamachi.
Maybe not as trendy (or loud) as other local sushi bars, or as sophisticated as those Downtown, this places offers real value for money in a quiet and comfortable environment
Okay, I came to this place with 4 of my friends for a nice night out, and we had great fun here.
Well first of all, the outside signage of this restaurant looks pretty aged and uninteresting, BUT once you get inside...the interior is amazing, all traditional looking and such with varnished wood etc. The sushi chefs greeted us with a loud Hello. On the sushi bar, they have a TV set , and I noticed they have some kind of evangelion/anime vinyl figures on the shelves behind where they work! Don't I have good eyes? Hahaha!
Well, on to the food. I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken bento thingy, the others got california rolls, tuna rolls and an assorted sashimi. The servings were pretty solid, in fact when my order came I knew my stomach wasn't big enough to hold all that food! So we just shared. The sushi rolls were nice, except the wasabi seemed to be more potent than other places. Everything was pretty good, but the Korokke that came with the box was especially nice. Value is awesome considering the food portion you receive.
Service was quite alright There were around 2 to 3 waiting tables and were really attentive at the start, even checking tables if they're OK, but seemed to move focus on to the newer customers later on. My friend actually asked the sushi chef to give him the bill, since the waiter/waitress were nowhere to be found.
Lastly, the ambience. Tenkai is a bit more different than other midscale Sushi restaurants because while other restaurants are more geared toward more seats = more customers idea, this place seemed more intimate and more private..It was so nice to not have to hear other loud customers in an asian foods restaurant. Oh, and the classic jazz music they had on were great, very relaxing!
Overall, it was a great dining experience. Actually felt very cozy despite being a sushi restaurant...will definitely visit again!
Their food is good. I like their tuna especially.
Service: I'm not so impressed. The waitress was not so friendly and not alert at all.
Value: worth it. I found the portions fairly good.
Ambiance: not so great but as long as the food is good, don't think it matters a lot.
will come back for sure.
We've gone to Tenkai for a few months now and have had consistently good, tasty food in a quiet, clean environment. You get good value for your money and I like that they have special plates and cups for kids. I also like that they make a special effort to cut my daughter's sushi pieces extra small; she's three and a half years old so that's a nice touch. The service is pretty good too and we never have to wait long. We're quickly becoming regulars!
Came here with a friend for a girls night out dinner. We were both freezing by the cranked up A/C (or no heat, whichever it was) and when brought some tea, was disapponted that the tea was the same temperature as the restaurant.
The food was not bad, we both had the bentei tray with sushi, tempura (yum) and teriyaki. We probably could have been more adventurous as it looked like there were some pretty interesting sushi rolls to try next time. BUT, being freezing cold, we both craved a warm meal with soup rather than just sushi. Needless to say, there was a lot of food - we both got full quickly, but it was nothing that special.
I would probably go back again, but it wouldn't be my first choice. Either that or I'll wear a turtleneck and down jacket next time.
My girlfriend and I have regularly visited this restaurant for about a year. The food is always very fresh and they are quick at preparing it. I enjoy the staffs enthusiasm when one enters the restaurant "MUSHI MUSHI"!! The waitresses are usually very attentive but on the odd times they will sometimes just ignore you until you wave them down. Definitely recommend this place to casual sushi goers. The food is pretty cheap. The menu is hard to read, it was as though they hired a crappy designer to make it. I am just being nit-picky.
