Clean, modern place for Japanese sashimi and sushi rolls
Food: The BEST spicy tuna sashimi! It just melts in your mouth! Large portions also. I ordered a tuna don thinking it'd be kinda small, so I also ordered a spicy tuna tempura roll. I could barely finish the don, let alone go onto my roll, so I had to pack that up. My friend ordered the spicy tuna sashimi combo and it was so impressive. Presentation was nice and the sashimi was just spectacular; spicy tuna sashimi alone costs about $9 here, but it tasted better than when we pay $14 at other Japanese restaurants! My boyfriend ordered his deluxe chirashi don with toro sashimi and he could barely finish that as well because it was so yummy and portions so large.
Service: Okay, I'm big on service and their service was crap. I don't agree with the person below me who said that they dont' have enough servers, because they do. The only problem is that they're not properly trained and very disorganized, resulting in them being VERY inefficient.
Ambiance: It's like any normal small Japanese restaurant. I like how they put the chopsticks and napkins in a basket on the tables though. It's cute and makes it so that I don't have to bug the waitresses for more napkins or to replace dropped chopsticks.
Overall: Best Japanese restaurant I've been to so far in Coquitlam considering the price, quality and portion of food. Service definitely can be better, but we ARE in an age of crap customer service, so it's all good. Because of the small parking lot though, I don't think I'll be back very often, at least not during the lunch and dinner rushes. But will definitely be back often when around the area :)
We have driven by this Japanese sushi place many times and decided to stop by to have dinner. We noticed that the restaurant closes at 9pm on Sundays and holidays, and we walked through the door at 8:45pm; the waitress greeted us right away and showed us to a table. It is a rather small restaurant with about 15 tables and it appeared that she was the only waitress working on a really busy night. However, she came by and brought us tea and menus. We both ordered sushi/sashimi combos, both under $9.00. The salmon and tuna sashimi were very fresh and tender. The portions are large too. I will definitely go back and try their other dinner combos.
This has got to be the best Japanese restaurant ever! We usually order the spicy salmon sashimi don and it's orgasmic. It is VERY spicy so if you can't handle it, you can request them to make it less spicy. The sushi boat is very good however, the portions is a bit less when it comes to the price. They have many special/exotic sushi rolls that you just have to try. I tried to fried california roll and it was delicious. The cream cheese roll was very good too.
I would think of myself as a sushi connoisseur- and the value/food here is outstanding. Try the tempura- you will be pleasantly surprised. Especially the prawn tempura. I go as often as I can, and you get a lot of food (bang for your buck, if you will). This place quickly won a spot as my favorite sushi place ever and i drag my friends there all the time. My favorite: bill's roll (smoked salmon, bean tempura, etc) and the cream cheese/smoked salmon roll (definitely!). Have fun you will love this place!
This place is really busy, noisy and crowded. It was one of the most stressful meals I have had. The people at the door were impatiently waiting for others to be done eating so they could be seated. I felt very rushed by servers and other customers. The food was good but I was surprised the chicken teriyaki didn't include rice. It was also a little oilier than I expected, with the bean sprouts sitting limply in the bottom of the skillet swimming in the oily sauce. I was trying to figure out why they are popular. My reasoning is that they are central, close to the skytrain and one of the few sushi places in this area? I might go back but only if I'm really craving Japanese food and can't wait to go somewhere else... or if I'm in the mood to scarf my food down in record time.
Excellent sushi, awesome portions, excellent food!
You will love the food and be impressed by the quality and portion size.
Service is mediocre to poor, but it's getting better. I eat here several times a week, almost always take-out as it's hard to get a table. Service is not as bad as it used to be. I highly recommend the salmon nigiri and sashimi as the fish is well prepared, cleaned and properly cut! Portions are large and perfect.
I've been to Sushi California for quite a lot of times ever since it opened. Although I have to admit their quality of food isn't the best, your next visit is likely because of the quantity of food at a reasonable price. You should see the thickness of their sashimi pieces, not to mention the size of their rolls. The only disappointment is the service. I know the restaurant is almost always busy, but i have to wait for over 15min just to place an order and wait another long long time before my food is ready. Not to mention that i have to see my food sitting on the sushi bar for another 10 min because the waitresses won't bring them over to my table. The waitresses do not refill my teacup until i ask them several times and they always seem confused and unfriendly. Despite the horrible service, the quantity of food keeps you visiting again.
Before placing the take-out order at the counter I was told that the wait was 10 minutes, 40 minutes later got the food and two miso soups as an apology. If you must, order over the phone. The place seems chaotic and service rushed and the dining are a bit on a dirty side so wouldn't recommend dining there. The sushi is not bad, the portions are generous and fresh, the quality of preparation is hit and miss depending on which person behind the counter prepared your food, sometimes you get it nicely put together sometimes a falling apart mess. Cheap and large "Japanese" style grub, not a fine dining by any means but then again the place never aspired to be one.
well, I don't take out sushi very often, but since it got a long line up, my wife and I decided to take out.
Based on such good reviews, I don't expect service but quality average food.
I was really impressed they only take 10 mins to make my party tray out of long line up at the door.
So happy on a saturday night
But when I get home after 15 mins, the rice really put my wife and me off.
The portion was very satisfying indeed. Dynamite and house rolls are nice and big.
nigiris are very generous. However, the rice was so undercooked that I had chucks of uncooked rice
stuck in my teeth.
Well, I guess I really came in on a bad rice day.
However, the service was average since I don't expect so much from a quick serve place and such
busy restaurant. The servers were professional and fast.
Value, well, is why I go there. So no complaints there.
hopefully I will be brave enough to give it another try another day.
I live close to sushi California, we go there at least once week. the food is very good. The prices are much less than the similar places with similar services in Vancouver. You must try spicy salmon sushimi. My boyfriend an I eat a lot, we go there et until we are full full, and we pay like 20-25 bucks together! incredible!
As a vegetarian when it comes to sushi I'm all about the appetizers. The Gomae at Sushi California is AMAZING!!! Tons of delicious sesame sauce!!! The Agedashi Tofu is also a treat, Spicey Agedashi is even better if you like a kick, huge portion size too, for vegetarians just make sure you ask for it without the fish flakes!!! Veggie Roll here is also very good, they have this delicious brown root in it that's very tasty. The service varies but you can't expect too much as there are only a couple of servers on and the place is packed, if they hired more servers they'd have to raise their prices so personally I'm fine with having a little slower service if it's accompanied by low prices!!!
I don't understand why everyone likes this place.
I've been here three times and have been unsatisfied all 3 x.
- Always crowded, super rushed to eat and find a table. You always feel like everyone is waiting for you to leave as people are lining up the door.
- Their teriyaki is the worst I have ever tasted in my life, and I consider myself a seasoned Japanese food lover. There is no rice with beef teriyaki, and instead of giving slices of beef - they gave us ground beef!! Can you imagine little pieces of ground beef - the type you usually stuff in chinese dumplings - classified as beef teriyaki? And the veggies were a mess of beansprouts swimming in water on the bottom. Even food court teriyaki beef is better than this!
- Their rolls are average or perhaps 10% bigger than average, but the quality is terrible. Mushed together, falling apart, rice too hard or warm, toppings not generous compared to the rice. Again, food court sushi is better. I have ordered dragon roll, smoked salmon roll, spider roll - all I found of sub par quality and definitely not 'humongous' portions as most people insist
- Tempura was too oily, and udon had barely any ingredients inside. Mostly noodle and soup - nothing special. Again, comparable to food court udon.
The only caveat here is that their sashimi seems very very fresh and in huge portions. I see tables around me ordering mountains of spicy tuna sashimi. I suppose that for sashimi and that only - it is worth going. You can't screw up the quality of sashimi. Just buy fresh fish and cut it up in big pieces so its value for money. But in everything else, Sushi California's poor quality shows through. Get take out from matzusushi near the Executive Inn instead - bad ambiance there, but quality, fresh food prepared by pure Japanese sushi chefs.
Love this place. Found it by accident last month. The food is first class. The service is prompt and the waitresses are lovely. Great value. The parking lot is a mess and always packed. The tables are too close to each other to have a decent conversation so sit at the bar. The chefs greet us each time. There is never a problem with the order and the food is served promptly with very little delay. The tuni sashimi is my favourite. The agadeshi tofu is a close second. Third would be the dynamite roll/cone. If I am within 15 minutes of the restaurant I always make a detour to eat there. My friends and I love it. I eat sushi and Japanese all the time in Vancouver and know quality. This place is great.
If you're the type that enjoys sitting down... spending time with friends.. to slowly enjoying your food... don't bother... visiting here. Sushi California has few spots, service is slow... and the ambience isn't the type of place you'd want to take your a girl for a first date.
Instead, it's the type of place where you have the Munches.. and you need to be satisfied .. with SUSHI... without resorting to all ya can eat...
The pieces are big... they're fresh... sometimes the rice is alittle TOO fresh as it's still warm... and the fish... FRESH... they sell so much fish here which keeps the quality high...
and the Toro.. best in town...
This is what it is, a great place for cheap sushi. The rolls are big, and the fish is usually fresh. Don't expect beautiful presentation, expect to be filled up. Although the atmosphere is not top quality, the food is not dodgy at all, which is something that you have to consider for sushi restaurants in this price category. The salmon sashimi is an incredibly large portion and defiantly recommended. The dynamite rolls are also very good. Word of warning- they put a lot of wasabi in their nigiri, as some sushi places do, so if you don't like this you will have to ask them to make the nigiri with out wasabi.
Service is terrible! Especially if you are caucasian. I always try to bring an asian friend with me when I go as it drastically improves the service. Otherwise don't count on your tea getting filled up while eating.
This little sushi restaurant serves good/fresh sashimi and decent sushi rolls. I'd have to recommend their toro there as it tastes better than a lot of other places. My only complaint about the food is that their sushi is lacking the sushi vinegar.
The food is reasonably priced.
As for their service, it's a bit slow. This place is quite small and it gets quite busy eating in and with take-out. I ordered take-out a couple hours in advance and I still had to wait cause they did not prepare my order ahead of time.
Diners shouldn't expect Sushi California to be a fine dining restaurant. It's basically a cheap, tasty local joint with big portions and low prices.
Food: Solid Japanese fare (though not completely authentic, as the restaurant is Korean-owned) - with all the standards of tempura, sashimi and California roll. I recommend the Spicy Tuna Roll/Sashimi, as they use a spicy sauce that is Korean-influenced and is both spicy and almost sweet. The Alaska roll is also different, as they put a yummy miso sauce on top of the standard avocado and salmon. Pretty much anything on the menu is safe - most of it delicious - and there are plenty of set combos for those who want a bit of everything.
Service: All the waitresses are high school students with very little training, but their service is passable. Dishes tend to come randomly and sometimes take a while - but the reason for this usually is because of how busy the restaurant gets. The restaurant almost always has a huge line-up in the evening and there are usually too few staff on hand. They do run a really good take-out service though.
Value: Very cheap with huge portions. You can be full and happy for less than $10.
Ambiance: The restaurant is very small with minimal decor - but usually quite clean. The tables are fairly close to each other as well and when the restaurant is full, it gets very noisy. But really, at Sushi Cali, you're not there for the ambiance, you're there for the cheap food.
Overall, a good place to go for good Japanese food while spending very little.
Sushi California is from my experience the best sushi place in Coquitlam/Burnaby. The portions are large, the fish is fresh and everything is delicious. They have a large menu with a wide range of sushi and "kitchen food." The portions are big but are still very high quality. My only complaint with with Sushi California is the service can sometimes be lack luster. However, the only time I have experienced this is when the restaurant is busy. Overall I love this restaurant and recommend it to everyone!
We frequent Sushi California quite often as the food is great and we live across the street. The Ambiance and service are horrible and the only reason we come back is for the food. On one of our recent dining experiences we were forced to switch tables in the middle of our meal because a larger party had come in and needed our table -we were only a party of two. We tried to be understanding of this. Tonight however was the icing on the cake. We sat for twenty minutes waiting to order (the restaurant wasn't busy and was half empty) while another table was sat and ordered, and was served. Finally we just left without ordering and went next door to LuLu Cafe where we were promptly served. I don't think we'll be returning there anytime even though we have been longtime customers. The food is fantastic... if you can get it.
although i often have sushi at this restaurant, i really hate their service. i have a pity on their waitress cos i totally see why they forget my tea or even my order - the restaurant is WAY TOO BUSY for 2-3 waitress to control! but still i have to admit that the service of this restaurant is horrible. and also it's just too noisy to have a quite meal. you can't even talk with your friends sitting in front of you cos a lot of people in a very small place talk at the same time. i personally prefer to take out the food and eat it at home cos i love their food but not their service! DO TAKE-OUT!
