At Sokela; experience a modern Mediterranean dining experience in the newly renovated dining room, or enjoy an expertly mixed drink with tapas in our chic lounge.
Sokela is Alekos backwards, LOL! Food was tasty, service was poor, but the decor was really nice. A far cry from the days of the old school looking Alekos. The only disappointments were the price, & they changed their BOGO offer in the entertainment book! A nice place every now and then, but I won't be back unless there is something more "wowing" on their menu.
Went there the other day for lunch and had a great meal. Probably had one of the best servers ever and the food was first rate. They recently changed the name of the restaurant and made major changes and the place is stunning. Couldn't quite figure out why there were no customers in such a nice restaurant so perhaps they do a better dinner business than lunch. I will return
This restaurant didn't really impress me. Ambiance was nice, though it felt a bit "cold", no character. Service was friendly, though at their price point, I would expect not to be called 'you guys'. Server must have been new as she didn't really seem to know a lot about the menu.
Just had a bunch of appies. The Lamb sliders were forgettable. They were edible, but were dry, very dense, and lacked flavor. They had that distinct lamb-y taste. They also seemed as though they were baked in the oven or pre-cooked. Also tried a flatbread with gorgonzola and pear. It was ok. As an appetizer though, I felt it was too big and too expensive. I would recommend a smaller portion at a price lower than $12.
I felt a little confused with all the Alekos references in the menu. You can't be two restaurants.
Overall it was ok, but I won't be back.
I'd submitted an earlier review of Sokela, soon after they opened. Recently I returned, and was really disappointed.
The ambiance was fine, but service was uneven and food was uninspired. Tastes were 'just okay', and not anything I'd return for. Disappointing, as there aren't many good dining options in the tricities and I was hoping this would step up to be one of them. It hasn't.
My wife and I went here on a Sunday evening and we had our $10 Entertainment Coupon with us for this place.
We ordered Moroccan wings to start with. We ended up returning them as they were bland despite the description on the menu saying they were spicy. The portion though was a good size though. We swaped the wings for chicken satays which were nice, juicy & had some spice to them.
For main course we both had ribs. The portion again was pretty big. We both could not finish. The service was very good, though it was pretty empty that Sunday evening we were there.
We would be reluctant to go back again purely because the food is over priced here.
Went to dinner last weekend with another couple. We were met at the door by a friendly employee who showed us to our table. Our waiter arrived quickly, explained the menu and specials and didn't push drinks at all. We ordered four different dinners. They arrived well presented and turned out to be ample portions as well as delicious. Our waiter checked in now and then but was not overbearing. Upon leaving, he opened the door for us, thanked us for coming and wished us a good evening. Overall it was a great evening out.
shared the calamari skaras here and it was fabulous. Sauce is tangy and sweet and absolutely delicious and calamari was nice and tender. Server was friendly, knowledgeable and not overly attentive; just right. For my main course I had meatballs and linguini. Same kind of sauce as the calamari and absolutely wonderful. A large portion so some went home with me to enjoy the next evening.
I have eaten here five times; both solo, and with my son. I therefore can say I have basis for a balanced review.
The food has always been way above average - the last visit the calamari was truly excellent - very tender and the breading cooked to perfection.
The serving staff have consistently been friendly and attentive, without leaving me feeling they were intrusive. I saw them deal with a difficult situation at another table with aplomb.
Value: in this case you get the quality of food, service, and surroundings that you pay for, and incidentally they also give good portion sizes.
The decor is fresh and upmarket, and ambiance is pleasantly relaxing.
Multiple visits - every time a winner.
Not too much more necessary to say after the title. Food is ok, but nothing spectacular. Beautiful interior. Prices are way out of line to both the quality of the food and the neighborhood. Service was indifferent and somewhat rude. We won't be going back.
I used to love coming to Alekos, and although it is the same owner, I feel they have tried to become the best, most gorgeous place to eat in Coquitlam. That would normally be a good thing, but something is lacking. Maybe because we are in the suburbs and to pay for good, but expensive food ($22-30 an entree) it just doesn't make sense for locals to spend that much without being downtown. I like going into the little lounge they have created to have a glass of wine, an appy with a friend, and split (Praws Tuscany is good). The 3 course meal is quite a good deal. I am really not trying to put this place down, it's quite a neat place, but maybe the lack of customers sometimes makes the place feel cold.
I've been wanting to try Sokela since they changed from Alekos a few years back. The renovation very much improved the ambiance overall and the service was excellent. We ordered the calamari which we found excessively greasy. We also ordered the ribs, rack of lamb and apple pie and overall everything was tasty. We were a bit shocked to recieve our bill though even with an $18.00 off coupon. For what you get, it really is over-priced especially for Coquitlam. I'm glad I tried it out finally but don't think I'll be going back anytime soon.
I can't recommend this place enough. Was pleasantly surprised as to how authentic the dishes tasted. Pasta and steak are highly recommended. THis place can compete with much higher priced fare in Vancouver. Fantastic decor and great selection on the menu. Some would argue it is priced highly, but given the outcome, I was happy with all of my dishes.
I am curious to see what more people think of this place. One of my fave places to eat.
