Only Korean Rice Cakes.
This is a bakery. Just a bakery. Do not expect any cafe or seats or anything. You go in, get your rice cakes and get out. It only does Korean style rice cakes.
Now, normally this wouldn't be deserving of a review, but this one is different. Oh believe me, we've had our share of rice cakes, Chinese, Japanese, Korean. When it comes to Korean types, we've had plenty from all the Korean markets in this town and others on the continent. None of them have satisfied.
That is, until we actually went to Seoul itself and got some stuff from the specialty vendors near NamDaemun (that is until it burned down). Back in Korea, as is typical of many Asian places, there are often shops that just do one thing. These rice cake vendors do it well, very well. Absolutely delicious! The stuff in North America, I would say not worth eating.
Imagine our surprise when we stumbled upon this place in Henderson Plaza (otherwise a dead mall) that is pretty close to what you can get from Seoul itself! This stuff is tasty! The lady running the shop is quite friendly, but English is not her strong point. Admittedly, if you're not acustomed to rice cake desserts, (kind of like Japanese mochi) it may not be your cup of tea. But that's because all you've tried is from the local markets here, you owe it to yourself to venture here and have another go. It may change your mind.
Two important rules:
- Never put this in the fridge unless you want to make a hockey puck.
- Eat it within a day or 2 at most. Highly nutritious with no preservatives so it will go bad quickly.
Worth repeated return trips. Highly recommended if you like rice cakes.
