Should have went to Pho 99 instead

We were in the Coquitlam area and felt like some Viet food. I was debating trying this restaurant or going to Pho 99. As the title suggests, I should have went to Pho 99.

This place is tiny, which is not a big deal, as it was pretty clean. There's probably not more than seating for 35 people. Service was okay, the guy brought us tea and water and basically left us alone. I had to go up to the front to pay, which is fine with me.

I ordered the large Pho dac biet and my wife ordered the bun (rice vermicelli) with spring roll and chicken. The "large" bowl is the size of a small at other pho restaurants. The bowl is wide, but quite shallow, so you don't get very much broth. There wasn't that much meat either. The broth, which is the hallmark of any good pho restaurant was very bland. I had to add a lot of fish sauce to give it flavour. At $7.50 for a large bowl, it was pricey for what you get.

My wife's bun was okay, not great. She noticed that the chicken meat was quite gristley. At $8.50 for a bowl, it is also more expensive than other Viet restauarants, and was not as good.

I'm kinda spoiled when it comes to Viet restaurants, since I work in the Kingsway @ Fraser Street area in Vancouver, where there is a plethora of great Viet restaurants that are much cheaper. While it's generally true that "mom and pop" pho places are usually better than chain restaurants like Pho Hoa or Pho 99, this is not the case with Pho Hoang Tung.

I won't be going back to this place.

Great pho but leaves you sweating in the summer.

A small family-run pho place in Coquitlam. Nothing special about the decor. The seating inside was quite cramped, the tables were really close to each other. Just can't imagine what it'll be like if the place it backed. Everyone will be sitting back to back. And it was a little hot on a summer day even with their door open and fan running. I was dripping with sweat by the time I was done with my bowl of pho.

Nothing to boost about in terms of service, the girl that was there was too busy talking to one of the regulars and a real estate agent that they had a appointment with.

Their redeeming factor was definitely their noodle soup. I ordered the chicken pho, and boy was the soup yummy! There was pieces of dark meat and chicken balls, and to set them off from the rest of the pho's I've had, they also put 2 hard-boiled quail eggs in there, which I found quite interesting. I prefer dark meat, because they are still palatable after being in the soup for a while. Most of the other places serve white meat, which becomes tough and chewy with the amount of time it's been sitting in the soup. The soup base was very flavourful, and the noodles were cooked very nicely as well.

Will certainly come back for pho, but perhaps will have to wait for a cooler day.

pretty good pho

Our usual dinner gang was looking for something to eat and we found this place opposite Superstore. The restaurant is easy to miss since it is nestled in a strip mall, but it is worth looking for.

We entered the nearly empty place, and the first thing we noticed was how clean it was. I later found even the w/c was spotless. The restaurant was sparsely decorated, but all the fittings looked new and the essential elements were in place. We were served by the very friendly manager who told us that PHT had been open for about a year and a half.

The menu had all the usual choices so we each got a large pho and shared a couple of orders of spring rolls. We also had some terrific Vietnamese iced coffees. All the food was great. The pho was full of flavor, not MSG, and the spring rolls were crispy and not greasy. The manager told us he ground the coffee himself. You could really taste the difference.

Service was very good, and there were numerous quality checks in addition to the friendly banter from the staff. As for price, it was not expensive. This place is a small family business and for a little while we felt like part of the family too.

Recommended.

Stick with the pho, avoid the lemongrass chicken
By Newtimus of North Van, BC (1 Review)
Submitted Friday, March 11, 2011 - 3:00pm [Take-out]

I've ordered takeout from this restaurant twice. First time I had #3 - Rare beef w/ beef balls pho. I remember it being average, but still good. It was awhile ago, so I can't recall on the proportions but I was definitely full and drinking some of the broth at the end.

However, I went today (Mar 11, 2011) for lunch and ordered the #36 Lemongrass chicken on rice and #52 red bean w/ coconut milk on ice. Today, I found my meal a little below average. The chicken to rice proportion was small. There was about 2.5 bowls of rice, a small corner for the lettuce and carrot shaving salad, and the thigh chicken meat. Again, I was pretty disappointed with the proportion of meat for $7.50. It tasted good... but I want to enjoy MORE of it.

The drink I ordered was not at all what I was expecting. They gave me kidney beans instead of the small red bean you usually are served. Anyways, the beans were sweetened somehow and were sunk at the bottom while you were left with a coconut milk with ice mixture on top. Not a lot of ice though, which is nice. Overall, it was still good; sweet and milky, lots of beans and coconut milk. Just not what I traditionally have.

We crave the Pho here

My husband (a chef) and I (a foodie) recently moved to the area from the Fairview area in Vancouver and missed the abundance of good Pho places there. That is, until we stumbled upon Pho Hoang Tung, which we now visit weekly. They use fresh ingredients, the soup base for their Pho is excellent, and they prepare their dishes with obvious care. This is one of the few restaurants overall where we've found the food is of consistently good quality. The servers there are always friendly and genuine and they keep the place neat and clean. I don't usually write reviews unless a place is really good or really bad and they definitely fall into the former category. Hope to see you there!

The best Vietnamese place in the Tri-cities

This small family run restaurant is great. The food is better and more authentic than the typical chain Vietnamese restaurants and the servers/hosts and the woman that runs the kitchen are a thousand times more friendly than you typically see in a pho place.

The chicken pho is especially good here.

The prices are in line with other pho places. It is never really too expensive to eat Vietnamese. I highly recommend this place.

Not as good as it used to be

Visited Pho Hoang Tung on Friday January 29th for lunch.

FOOD: I had the #3 Rare Beef/Beef Balls noodle soup and 2 spring rolls. Their soup is usually decent although on this visit, it was terribly bland and tasted nothing like a beef broth for Pho. The spring rolls were good but tiny and not worth what you pay for.

SERVICE: The owners/servers promptly serve tea, provide menus, and take orders. Payment is usually "walk up to the counter" which is normal for smaller Pho shops like them. They are quite friendly.

AMBIANCE: The place is nice and cleaner (dining area and washrooms) than most Pho places that I've been to, so that's a plus for Pho Hoang Tung.

VALUE: I guess Pho is always a decent value, and their Pho prices are reasonable ($7 Regular, $7.50 Large) but the spring rolls are not ($1.50 for two small bite size pieces).

OVERALL: I've been here several times before, this being the worst in terms of food. They are the only Pho place in the vicinity, so the only time I would go back is only if I'm in the area and really desperately craving for Pho.

This is a good restaurant. The hot and sour seafood pho is wonderful. Order only half noodles as you get so much more broth. Spicy and flavorful.
It is in a strip mall so there's lots of parking.
Service is quick and friendly. They asked me if I wanted a newspaper and brought it to my table. The restaurant is small but clean. Certainly recommended.

Pho Hoang Tung

Best Vietnamese pho in Coquitlam.
My best friend and I are Pho lovers. We order it for lunch at least two to three times a week. We've tried all the Pho places in Coquitlam. Pho Hoang Tung is by far the best. The soup tastes cleaners and the meat is never too fatty. You get more meat at other restaurants, but if you want quality over quantity, choose this one. for take out, they get our order right 95% of the time. All other places never get the order right. Worst if you do not get the sauce for take out, and always missing the tendon for take out. And now all pho places do not even give you cilantro anymore! Pho Hoang Tung will give you cilantro upon request. Most of all service is great here! It's a family run business and they truly care about their quality of food and service.
Must try the Special Spicy Beef and pork soup - it's very good! But my fave is #9! The only thing I can wish for at this restaurant is for them to make vietnamese subs like the ones from Vancouver on Kingsway and Fraser!

Pho Hoang Tung is a great Vietnamese restaurant! The food is very good, and it is also one of the cleanest Vietnamese places I have gone to. The service is outstanding, and there is a very friendly family atmosphere. The business is family owned, therefore, the whole family is down there helping out. I'd like to suggest the number 27, which is Vietnamese noodles (Vermacelli I think?) with chicken skewers and there deep fried spring rolls. Or, the number 23, which is thick noodles in a spicey soup. All in all, the service and food was towering compared to other pho restaurants.

not so great

I tried takeout here several times. Everytime, something is missing. Like lemon or lime (I hate getting lemon anyhow, we should get lime!), sauce, basil leaves and worst of all missing tendon! Often no cilantro - even though superstore is right there and always has an abundance of cilantro for sale. if my friends and I order, there's no even-ness to their portions, even if all takeout orders are the same. One has more meat, one has more noodles. One might have tendon. One doesn't. so my friends have to see who is missing what and re-distribute the order after we get it home. the girl is really nice. but her brother, not always nice. the parents are charming. You might not want to eat there if noise bothers you. the kitchen and waiters all speak very loudly to each other. so if you like a nice quiet place to spend with a friend, choose another place. Overall, tastes good and clean. but if you like tendon, you will only get one tiny piece. Other pho restaurants give alot more meat and two to three times the amount of tendon.
