Hello there,
Last wednesday was a hooking up with some buds at this place of which.... one of them works near by as an engineer. Why not...give it shot. Took me a good 35 minutes to reach this place from eastvan via highway 1, exit Gaglardi Way, right on lougheed, left on North Road and straight into a Korean strip mall about a 1/4 way up. Some free parking as I was quite late for our 1230pm lunch.
As I stepped in...the boys were already slurping up rice noodles. One had the usual beef ball and other had flank steak with a helping of spring rolls. I had to raise my hand to get the attention of the waitress. Got the menu...played it safe. I ordered the small No.2 eye round steak with well done flank ($7.50)...only problem...ran out of eye of round which kind of sucked so more flank. Plus a single piece of spring roll ($2.30).
Waited for about 7 minutes for my soup to arrival and the waitress forgot my garnishes...so another minute of waitin. Verdict...rice noodles were a squarer rice noodle than the usual flat ones...had more texture and slightly firmer...it was good. The soup base..mild not salty or MSGed to hell. The flank...nothing special. The spring roll was the Chinese version of the skin with the usual suspect filling...crisp good like the ones at Thai son.
Overall, alright. Would I come again???....Hmmm damn far for pho considering there were tons of pho places in my neck of woods but if I worked or lived in the area...this might be the standard. In fact, Pho 99 has got tons of locations in the subs. I noticed it got busy right after we left at 1:25 pm..construction workers and suits..nice mix of clients.
Thanks for reading.

Nothing extraordinary...

Came here a few times with my friends...good solid pho place. Wide variety of choices on their menu and everything is priced quite reasonably. Noodles cooked well, and the soup base was nicely flavoured, but it wasn't anything extraordinary. Food came quickly, a good choice to come and grab a something quick during lunchtime.

Pho not impressive

Came here with two other friends as one of them recommending this place. First impression of the pho I ordered: Not much toppings, mostly noodles, soup tasted bland. I've had better pho elsewhere. Also, they only provided us bean sprouts and lemon. No basil or chilli pepper. I didn't bother to ask for the basil as the servers were busy speaking in their own language.

Service was okay. Didn't expect much to start with. We had to wave the server for her attention to take our orders. We also had to wave her down to get her to fill our water. Nothing impressive.

Value: Standard prices. I find the portions to be a bit on the smaller size. But if you want to fill yourself up with anything, this will do.

Ambiance: It was tidy. The sun was glaring as the restaurant faces the sun at the time of day we were there. It really hurt my eyes as I was stuck sitting facing the direction of the glass store front. They do have blinds, but it didn't do the job.

I was so happy to discover this place, as it is the same as the one I used to go to back in the early 2000s with my friends - it mysteriously disappeard to be replaced with McPho (aka Pho Hoa). This is my date place when I spend time with my wife, aka my BFF. It's our place, but I also share it with my husband from time to time. I think the beef broth is excellent, and the salad rolls are fresh. I also like the spring rolls, but don't get them as often as I would like (*sigh*). The sandwiches are also a treat, and really, even if they weren't that great, who can complain at $3?

Worth it

I've eaten at this particular Pho 99 quite a few times in the past. The quality ranges from superb to slightly above average. At times the pho comes out piping hot with nice firm noodles and meat that falls apart in your mouth. Other times the pho comes out luke warm with soft noodles and tough meat. The broth has never been bad however depending on the time you either get a mild tasting almost clear broth, or a very dark slightly salty quite flavourful broth.

The best pho I have ever eaten came from here, but only once out of many trips.

Their rice dishes and rolls are worth a mention as well, my wife orders them every time, and I've yet to have a bad dish.

The service is on par with the vast majority of pho restaraunts, you need to flag waitresses down for water, forks and small bowls for children are offered occasionally.

They do not try to exude any special ambience, It's just a place to come and pick up a cheap lunch or dinner. However, it does seem to be one of the cleaner pho places i've been to.

As for value, I am not a native vancouver resident so i do tend to rate the value of the food higher than most as your prices tend to be amazing. However how can one compain about taking your family out for a decent meal that runs you under 20 dollars all said and done.

First off, I want to say that I used to go here during my 12 hour shifts at the hospital as they were quick to give you your food and I only had an hour. The last few times they seemed a little OFF PUT that I came by myself and would want a table alone.
The last time I was there they stuck some guy with me (I am a female) because they were busy and left the larger tables for larger groups even though they had no larger groups at that time. I thought this was weird and never made a fuss. I ate my soup and left.
Also:
I was the only white gal in the place and I noticed that they didnt give me any basil or chilis and only about 20 sprouts. The rest of the customers got heaping plates of basil. I ♥ Basil too!
My facebook status that day said "While gal needs basil"
I found a new place for Pho even close to the hospital where they are happy to seat me alone and dont put strangers at my table.

Go to place for hangover city

This is my alllll time favorite Viet place to go to for Pho!!! Their beef pho is the star but I also love their seafood pho! Light flavorful broths and tender meats. Perfect pho! We always eat here with my significant other's parents! There are always a bunch of other vietnamese people eating there too - that should say something! Broth and noodles are perfect.

Small bowls I can finish fine. Medium bowls when I'm starving. Large bowls are always a mistake for me when my eyes are bigger than my stomach.

Take out is fantastic too! They pack everything neatly and tightly and everything thrown together at home is *almost* just as good as eating it at the restaurant. I love their spring rolls as well!

I have been going to the same pho for many years on Austin, but it's too far for us now. Pho to us is a drop in place when we are super hungry and need soup in the late nites. We discovered it after we moved to port coquitlam. Open late, really tasty soup and fast without questions. But we just found it the portion is a bit less. Bowls are too small for the soup they put it. Other than that, great place to eat on a winter nite.

of all the pho soups i've tried, pho 99's is the best. They are quick and nice. I like that their soups come with carrot and broccoli, not just meat and noodles for a change. They are generous with the sprouts too. I highly reccommend this place as it's the same price but so much better than fast food like McD's or A&W.

Great food/value, average in all other aspects

Not the most comfortable place to dine it but it's good enough. The reason I come here once in awhile is for the food!! Which I have to say is pretty darn good for the price. However, I rated 4stars instead of 5 for the food because the lack of variety on the menu becomes apparent after you've dined a few times. For example, items 1-8 are all noodle-soup bowls... and they're all the freaken same. I kid you not. Same noodles, same soup base, and sometimes even the same meat. On the upside most of the food here is either modest or quite generous in quantity and the my food is always served hot.

The 4 for value is well, they have great value! That is to say, the quality/quantity of food you get to price ratio is definitely above average. But it's not "oh my god I can't believe this, it's like I'm robbing them in broad daylight" type of value, it's just good. Unfortunately I noticed they recently (Dec 27th 09) increased the price of their drinks and a few of the more popular items on their menu.

The service is dependant on the amount of customers there are. If there are a lot, expect slow service. We're talking at least 20 minutes to get your food. However, if it's is average/notbusy your food usually comes within 5-10. Of course, this varies based on your order. As far as the waitresses are... ONE (the one with a really strong accent) is quite lively and always listens to any complaints/requests you may have and does her best to give you good service. Most of the other waitresses don't care too much for the job but hey, they still give you your food/drinks and pay attention and stuff.

In the past, the payment process was a real pain. THEY ALWAYS TOOK FOREVER! Even if we were the only customers there. As of late though they seem to be a little more efficient and the waiting time is less gruesome. On occasion though (apprx 1 every 3 times) they take forever.

Give this place a try! I swear it's miles better/cheaper than Denny's next door... expect great food, value, probably average-ish in all other aspects. If you're dining with a good friend or girlfriend/boyfriend, the below-average atmosphere is easily forgotten.
