Way overpriced, and not even good
By Burgerandbrew of Surrey (31 Reviews)

Unfortunately, the rocky point cafe where we were originally going was closed, so my friend decided sushi was a good bet (i like sushi, just didn't know the area).

For 6 bucks a dynamite roll, you would think it would be big, or the very least delicious and the place would have a decent wine list. We ordered ebi gyoza, ebi mayo, salmon sashimi, and a dynamite roll each. My friend also ordered a pop (in a glass bottle) and 4 pieces of nigiri.

The ebi mayo was pretty good, but its hard to screw up something fried. the gyoza sounded good but were gross, they sprayed out water or something when you chewed into them. The prawns were probably frozen and defrosted through soaking in water before being put in the gyoza. The shell tasted like tortilla..... very chewy. The dynamite had way too much mayo or old avocado, something to make it too creamy. With the wild rice (which could be a nice touch, but wasn't in this case) it just all fell apart and tasted like a mess. The sashimi was OK and probably the only decent part. slightly room temperature.

Our bill came to 52 bucks no tip, no drinks. w-t-f

The service was good though, and the ambiance was nice. Would never ever come back here.

We were her last night with two other couples at ones insistence that we try this place. It is the old anduccis on Lougheed so the decor was nice with some Asian/Japanese additions. We decided on the Omakase at $60/person. Now sometimes omakase (which literally means "its up to you" in Japanese)can result in two things, either the chef gives you a parade of ho-hum cheap stuff for a big rip off or it can be a way to try stuff you never normally would and it lets the chef show off his skill. Thankfully this place was the latter. They asked us ahead if we wanted emphasis on cooked or sushi/sashimi and we went with the first. The parade of dishes was truly amazing and I lost count of how many! some high lights, Lobster roll, tuna tataki, a great octopus sashimi in a curry sauce, smoked salmon, TWO dozen Kishu (sp) oysters with various sauces, a sirloin beef roll (most unique) steamed mussels in curry sauce, a beautiful prawn tempura in a shredded fried potato nest with salad, oh and the desserts, green tea creme brulee, a white chocolate with bean paste and poached pear with ice cream were the three we choice (one per couple). I am positive that I've forgotten some dishes as there were too many to remember. The service staff was attentive and efficient and very pleasant. The chef would be right at home with this type of place and menu downtown. Foe 120 per couple it was a great fine dining value. I will be back to pick and choose next time from his large inventive sushi/tapas menu. This is an easy one to recommend!

Overpriced

walked in for lunch the other day not even knowing what kind of food they served. i was happy to find it was a new sushi joint.
the menu looked great. i ordered a lunch box with a side of wings. the presentation was fantastic. i guess that's what you're paying for since you get a little less on your plate for your money.
taste wise, it was good. nothing special but definitely better than many other places i've been to.
service was great. i might just go back to see my waitress.
my bill was $30 with tip. i could have gone down the street for an all you can eat place for $12 where the food is just as good.
would i go back?
only if friends are going.

Great Music on a Thursday Night! Food, meh

Arrived later on a thursday evening. There were some DJs just setting up. Apparently they have pro DJs every thursday night. Rockin music. I will go back for it alone.

The service is some of the best I have ever experienced. They are friendly and welcoming to a point where you think they might actually walk you to your car, drive you home and run the bath while making coffee. Sorry, the food is very average and too pricey. Brown rice sushi? Don't like it.

Very cool room. Nice people. Shame about the food.

Go on a Thursday Night! Do it.

New Twist on Japanese

A fairly new Japanese-Western fusion resturant. Haven't heard of another place that serves this kind of cuisine around the Lower Mainland. If you are looking for basic and simple maki this is not the place for you. O Raw Bar put a unexpected and savoury twist on classic rolls.
Definately try a few of the rolls, which include such ingrediants as beans, pineapple, mango, lobster, and angus beef. I had a Tropical Punch roll and was pleasantly suprised with the combo of sweet/savoury taste and crunchy (fried sweet potato)/soft (rice) texture. A friend was equally pleased with the Angus Roll. This resturant jumped aboard the health craze and only use brown and wild rice. They also have an oyster bar!
The elaborate rolls are great value as they are huge and stuffed full of fresh and quality ingrediants. However, the appetizers are on the pricier side (eg, tempura, gyoza) and a few of the meat options looked fairly small for the price.
Service is great. The manager or owner makes a point to stop by and greeted many customers by their first name. The resturant decor and vibe is fresh and simplistic. Japanese decor adds to the ambiance.

It's OK

We went last night for our anniversary dinner. Heard that there were large portions that justified the price, so we decided to try it.

We got 3 things - Beef Tartare ($13), Braised Beef Short Rib ($18), and Mentaiko Udon ($13).

We got a grilled saba (mackerel) for free as a sample. That was nice.

The Beef Tartare tasted pretty good, but was pretty small for $13. You can't eat that much raw beef anyway.

Mentaiko Udon - this wasn't what I expected. At places like Gyoza King or Guu your Mentaiko Yakiudon is a udon cooked in garlic butter, with mentaiko (cod roe). Here it was Mentaiko Alfredo. It tasted pretty good, but was heavy and not really what I expected. Very little mentaiko taste.

Beef Short Rib - This was good. Good flavour (sweet flavour), and a large portion of meat. It was good, but really probably belonged in a white restaurant.

After our dinner our hostess gave us ice cream - a nice touch. All in all for the 3 dishes it came out to $50 something after tax and tip.

Good, but pricey food

I've been there several times and I have to admit it is a bit pricey for what you get. However, I do return there and enjoy it everytime. The food is consistent and I love the little sampler they give you. The Ebi Mayo there isn't the best one out of the restaurants I go to, but it's still very good (we order it everytime we go). We've tried about 3/4 of the rolls they offer and I must say I'm not a big fan of the ones with mozzarella melted on top. All the other rolls are great. I love eating healthy and I don't like eating too many simple carbs, so I love the fact that they use brown rice for the sushi. They have a great selection of oysters as well! If you have low standards for sushi, this place is not for you. You will think it's a rip-off. However, if you have high enough standards that you would never eat at Sushi Town or ToGo Sushi or any of those places, you will enjoy the food here enough to justify the price.

The service is always great and the waitresses are always kind and helpful. The chefs who are at the sushi bar are very pleasant and always make the experience delightful. It's a great place to take a date to impress and it's a great place to go for drinks with some appetizers. I would definitely return, but only because it's the only higher end sushi restaurant around Coquitlam that has a younger atmosphere.

First of all, if you're in the mood for your generic beginners sushi (ie. california roll, dynamite roll, spicy tuna roll, etc) Don't. Come. Here.
Rolls such as these can only get so good, and there are dozens of places that can serve up your generic, run-of-the-mill, not very interesting (or good) rolls. Oraw is pricey. Go somewhere else for cheap sushi.

That being said, a large majority of Oraw's menu tastes excellent. The filet mignon is wonderful and the fusion rolls look amazing and taste great. There is a good selection no matter what you're in the mood for, although I am still irked that they don't have any sunomono. Then again, they do advertise "Japanese Fusion", not strictly Japanese.

Service is great, especially if you're going to be at the bar to talk to the chefs.

If you look closely, you can still see remnants of the interior designs of Anducci's, but overall the ambiance is trendy and comfortable.

In conclusion, give Oraw bar a try, but make sure you're going for the right foods.
Dont order a california roll expecting to be impressed because it's expensive.
It's a california roll, what did you expect.

we went to this place for late dinner. Service was really great and
design was okay. when i looked at the menu, i was bit surprised. Price was bit higher than i thought. They have similar dish with Nagano but price was much higher. Anyways, we ordered several dishes.
Decoration was nice but taste was horrible.
I ordered a one of their famous dishes but it was just a dish which i could have in the food court.
we paid $50 and wan't full.

i never gonna go back to this place again
