Montana's Cookhouse is a casual, relaxed gathering place serving a family-friendly menu of steak, ribs, chicken, burgers and salads.
First off, I have been to numerous Montana's locations throughout Canada and have always enjoyed them. Unfortunately though, I have to join the ranks of the ones who would give this place a terrible rating here. I had wondered if maybe our experience was a one off but after reading about other experiences, I'm concluding that this place just isn't good.
We went here on a Saturday night around 8:00pm or so. The dining room was not busy when we arrived and the hostess sat us right away. Sho also told us that they had just had a dinner rush to explain the dirty napkins and straw wrappers all over the floor that never did really get cleaned up.
We sat at our table long enough to have decided on drinks, an appy and our dinners before we saw our server. She had been chatting with other servers and rolling napkins the entire time. Rather than ask if we had decided yet when she saw that our menus were folded, she launched into the specials. We listened and then said that we had already decided. She was really abrupt with us and pretty much barked the options for sides at us.
Someone else brought our drinks over and then our calamari a few minutes later. We didn't have cutlery so we had to sit and wait until we were able to flag someone down and by that time everything was rubbery and cold.
Our steaks weren't bad but the sides were absolutely disgusting. Imagine a bowl of half cooked freezer hashbrowns that have been mixed with congealed oily sauce and raw onions. That's what we had. We were not told about these "smashers" and we didn't know what to make of them.
Our server let our plates sit on our table for a good twenty minutes before we finally managed to flag her down again to ask for our bill. She asked if we wanted the smashers and other leftovers packaged and we said that we didn't. She then offered us different sides. Never mind that she had not checked on us once, apparently she thought we would be happy with a bowl of corn to munch on for desert?
Negligent service and disgusting food aside, the atmosphere was nothing short of obnoxious. They apparently have a birthday thing where staff members come from the kitchen cheering and clanging a huge triangle before yelling their birthday greeting at everyone. Once, no big deal. Twice was a little annoying. The third time in twenty minutes had us on edge. I can understand wanting to have a fun birthday but you really do not need to annoy an entire dining room full of people who are all paying for a nice dinner out. The damn triangle and hollering are something that this place CAN control and should. It really just made the entire evening that much more annoying.
The entire debacle ended with us biting back laughter. Our server finally came by with the credit card machine and apologized for keeping us waiting to pay. Her excuse? She told us that she had been checking with another table whose food had just been delivered becasue she "wanted to make sure that they enjoyed their food becasue good service is really important". In other words, she was giving another table service that we had not seen? Or was she just making a last ditch attempt to get a decent tip? We kept straight faces and burst out laughing once we were outside. Good service huh? I'd hate to see her on a lazy day.
I went to their website the next day and emailed them about our experience. I specifically stated that I did NOT want to be contacted nor did I want to have any sort of "make it right next time" gesture made becasue we don't want to waste another evening there. I'd rather pay for a nice meal out than have to endure a horrible free one.
The manager did contact me regardless and I was impressed at how seriously he took my complaint. He did send us a gift card to bring us back again. Here's the thing though; he wants us to let him know personally next time that we are in so that he can make sure that we have a good experience. Great of him? Absolutely. But if this place is so great then they really shouldn't have to have a manager on hand to make sure that customers are treated well.
We haven't used the giftcard yet. We tried to use it at another place owned by the same company (Cara) and were told that we can only use it at Montana's. So it'll sit and collect dust unless we make the trek out to another location. (Langley is much better.)
A group of six of us went there on a Saturday evening. It was annoyingly loud .... could not even hear the person across the table from you. They really should look into improving the acoustics ... the noise isn't from music but just from people talking. It was brutal.
The restaurant's decor is kind of fun ... rustic with a fun cabin appeal. A little cramped.... could be improved by removing a few tables.
The margarita I ordered was tasteless. Mostly ice ... and no flavor. The fajitas were okay ... the vegetables were sliced far too large to eat a rolled fajita without making a mess. The guacamole (which you pay extra for) was inadequate and again tasteless. The portion was generous.
The service was prompt and the waitress got everything right the first time.
Considering the blandness of the food it was a tad overpriced.
Service was so bad I had to register on this and say something eventhough this happened earlier this year in feb/march. My girlfriend, Best Friend and I went to Montanas for lunch, we arrived in a great mood, so we didnt really complain that it took at least ten minutes for anyone to greet us and find our seat eventhough the place was empty. After we were seated, given menus are table waitress came and as we were asking about the differetn types styles of ribs she blurted "you cant share or you will be charged for another order" we all looked at eachother as it was uncalled for and her tone seemed to think that she assumed that what we were planning. I figured we should have left then but my friend and gf convinced me otherwise. WHen we got our food eventhough there was only six people in the restaurant including us we couldnt see the waitress at all. she hid in the back. We had to flag her down everytime she came out. and when she arrived with her no smile she acted as if we were bothering her. This continued and when it was time to pay we discussed if we should even say anything. We called the hostess over and asked if we could speak to the manager as she was walking back to the back room she wispered something to the waitress who then came and asked why we want to talk to the manager. I told her I just had some issues about the service Immediately the waitress said well your not getting your meal for free and that the manager is not in and that she is the one in charge. SHe asked us what was wrong and we told her the service wasn't up to par. she said sorry you feel that way. I asked for a card for her manager as I was determine to let the manager know about this. When we left my gf called the number on the card and the same waitress answewred the phone and told my gf that the manager wont be in for a coule of weeks and prior to hanging up she begans laughing with another coworker and hung up. We waited a couple of weeks but had forgot the waitress name just knew she was a brunette. For someone who comes in to pay for the food one would expect positive service from the staff it was disappoininting. I have never been on this to write something negative but to this day it bothers me and will never go to montanas ever nor will i encourage others to go no one deserves that kind of service. The food is def. not worth taking a chance.
This is an update of a review I did a year ago.
On our visit to Montana's of Coquitlam on 26 November 2008 the food was very good. We had the AYCE Baby Back ribs with Texas Bold sauce. On this occasion the ribs were excellent, both the original rack AND the refills.
The problem on this visit was the NOISE. Not only were we subjected to the foolish moose head birthday routine over and over, once right beside our table, but a fire alarm also went off and lasted every two or three seconds for fifteen to twenty minutes non-stop before the manager had the presence of mind to turn it off! This was more than annoying and basically spoiled the whole evening. People do not go to a restaurant to be annoyed by gratuitous auditory stimuli but to have a relaxing and enjoyable time. Such was not the case at Montana's of Coquitlam on this particular evening. I have never been subjected to such a noisy, unrelaxing and raucous time at a restaurant before.
To top it all off, at check-out we were left an automated digital device which did not function correctly and required the assistance of the waitress to finish paying the bill! Extremely annoying.
On this occasion the food was good but the rest of the experience was dismal.
It will be a L-O-N-G time, if ever again, that we patronize Montana's of Coquitlam. There is a plethora of relaxing and equally good restaurants in the Tri-Cities area which we will attend before being subjected to the horrendous racket and other annoyances which we endured to-night.
We wanted to try something new and went to Montana's for some ribs. There were 3 of us and we ordered beef ribs, ribs and chicken (white meat), and ribs and chicken (wings). The wings were pretty good. They coat them in cornmeal which makes them extra crispy. The white meat chicken was only average and a bit bland. The back ribs we got with honey garlic sauce and they were fantastic! Tender and very flavorful. We ordered the beef ribs with Rickard's honey brown sauce and to our surprise, it was also very tender and juicy. We thought since it's beef it may be a bit tougher, but it wasn't at all.
The service was pleasant and attentative. Our waitress often came by and checked on us. The ambience may seem a bit childish, with paper table cloths and crayons to draw on them, but we loved it! While waiting for the food we had a great time doodling comics about each other.
Overall it's a great restaurant for family or friends get-togethers, but the atmosphere is probably not for any diner looking for sophistication or elegance. We will be back for sure.
We took the family for dinner; food was ok, good portions but too heavy on the peppercorn though, service was less than desirable took almost 15 minutes to get drinks order and another 10-15 minutes to get the actual drinks. Place is clean and well decor, prices are reasonable for the portions that you get.
We went for dinner Saturday night and were seated at a large booth. We ordered the pork side ribs and back ribs, regular size. The back ribs were very meaty and a good size. The side ribs were fattier, chewier and tasty too. You pick one side dish, we had baked potato and fries. The included cornbread was way too sweet, sticky and dense, we prefer the lighter version in cornbread. Our server was quite friendly and the atmosphere was good. We will return..
Went to Montana's last night w/my fiance's B-Day and had a mediocre time.
Food: Solid ribs as usual. We ordered their chicken wings to start, which were pretty good. A bit too much breading for my liking. I especially enjoyed their corn bread. One thing we both regretted ordering there were their cocktails (where's the alcohol? Or is it meant to just taste like syrup?)
Service: Where to start..where to start. First, the hostesses were fairly rude and didn't seem to know what was going on around them. After waiting 30 minutes, we were finally seated and greeted by our waitress. Long story short - our waitress was never around. She didn't do any quality checks or even come back to ask if we wanted other drinks once we were finished with the ones we had. I don't think I saw her smile even once last night! When we did want/need something, we had to flag her down.
Value: solid.
Ambiance: I think I'm done w/the quirky family style decor they have going on there.
Overall: if I ever want ribs from Montana's again I'll just go to the Langley location.
Went there for the second time,to see if things were better.
Nope.
The fireside things were too rich, but not tasty.
The steak was so salty,I had to scrape the seasoning off to make it edible.(Not to mention that it took half an hour to get the food to our table.)Their twice baked potatoes were'nt even once baked, hard and uncooked. And the coleslaw? Don't even ask.
Never again will there be a visit to Montana's.
hmmm....AYCE ribs....it was so good. I don't mind the price was a bit too high. It was $90 for the whole family that night, but It was totally worth it. The ribs are so juicy and filling that I just kept eating without stopping. Not going back for a while coz the price was high, but definitely will go back for the juicy juicy ribs......hmmmmm
Just went there with friends as usual I had the awesome pork side ribs with Apple Butter Sauce. I noticed they had updated their menu and I am confused as to why they did this. Prior to this change, most people had nothing, but good things to say about the old menu which is evident how busy this place was. Essentially they fixed something that was not broken in the first place. Why on gods green earth would they abandon such a popular menu?
I few in my group had some items from the new menu and reactions were mixed. One person noted how much Meditereanan food was on the new menu and with that said if I wanted to eat Meditereanan food, I would go to a Meditereanan restraunt
We went out to try this restaurant by Coquitlam Center. The food was ok, we had ribs as that was what they are known for. Unfortunately we waited a long time for food and the service was ok just like the food. The decorations were reasonable especially the moose. We probably won't go back again as the service and food were nothing special.
Went there on the weekend for Valentine's as we didn't make a reservation elsewhere and Montana's doesn't take reservations anyway. We arrived before 6:00pm to make sure we get a table and even after 6 it didn't get too too busy, I guess it isn't the most romantic choice for Valentine's. Anyway, we use to really like the ribs here because they were well-marinated, tender and served at the right temperature but the last 3 times or so, the ribs were served less than warm and we were quite disappointed. This time I ordered the half rack of back ribs but they were thick, fatty and tough... very disappointing! I enjoyed my dessert, a cholate-dipped cone at Dairy Queen way more than dinner!!!
My wife and I tried this place on a Wednesday evening which happens to be 'all you can eat ribs night.' You pay $26.99 for all you can eat ribs. The full rack comes with 12 good sized ribs and for $25.99 and the regular rack, 6 ribs, $19.99. Comes with beans and choice of one side. Was OK, the meat did not fall off the bone like it can at places like Dix in Yaletown. Service was OK, though I can sure see food and service being variable here.
Service ruined the trip here.
Not much to say about it.
Won't be back.
nearly empty place but getting some table service impossible.
Also has country music playing, ouch.
Who wants to hear country music while they eat. Or ever for that matter.
Came here with my girlfriend after a day of shopping at Coquitlam Center. I had a free appetizer coupon from signing up on their mailing list.
Food: I forgot the name of the appy we had, but was basically cheese and some salsa wrapped in a tortilla shell. Quite delicious. Then we shared a large rack of ribs and a plate of fish and chips. Considering they claim the ribs are award winning, I was disappointed. While the honey garlic sauce was tasty, the ribs was not too tender it itself. The fish and chips was below average, and cod nor halibut was used. I actually think the fish was sole, which was odd. The colelaw was crispy and fresh though.
Service: Attentive, the waitress was very cheery and checked up on us to see if everything was OK. Definitely better service than other chain restaurants like Milestones.
Ambiance: We sat in the bar area, which had HD TV with the football game on, so that was good. Washrooms are fairly clean. However, I found the restaurant too noisy. In the main dining area, it seemed their was a b-day every five minutes, and people celebrating by banging their utensils on the table or plates.
Coming from Richmond, I wouldn't drive out here just to come to eat, but if you're here already, this place is worth a try.
We used to love to go there for dinner, but we're quite dispoint last time, when they're busy the meat can be dry or burn, we have twice dry meat, so do not go there on the weekend, if can control the quality the price is fine, but when you have recieved the burn ribs oh, oh, the price not good, I think next time I will ask them control the quality before I make order.
I wouldn't trek too far to eat here, but when I am at the mall or nearby, and would like to eat lunch somewhere, this is a great place. They have affordable lunch specials for good, hearty food. Dinners are great and affordable. Ambiance is neat, too. It's a unique place in a town full of the usual suspects.
I love the Ribs here, but the restaurant is a little too "open" all around you so a bit noisy. I've been back several times though....Huge servings, friendly staff and quick....Prices are ok..not too high, not too low.
I'm not crazy about the tables and chairs here...not overly comfortable...but the food makes it worthwhile.
Wait staff hardly ever showed up at the tables, even though it wasn't very busy. If they did, they may have cut down on the other patrons' kids' high-decibel horseplay and messy spills. But at least their squealing gave relief from the profanity-filled conspiracy theory venom from the woman at the table next to ours, something that an attentive and experienced server would have picked up on and tried to defuse. Oh, and the orders got messed up too. Definitely didn't leave the standard tip.
