Don't Eat Here! Choked On A Fish Bone!
By cyn of Burnaby (7 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, July 18, 2010 - 6:10pm [Dine in]

My brother and I were in the area and decided to try Miya.
Horrible choice.

We walked in and found the place to be completely empty - not a problem as the ambience of the restaurant was nice. Very stylish inside, very clean - the restaurant looked promising.

We ordered:
-Noodle Combo B
-Gomae
-Negitoro Roll
-Chopped Scallop Roll

The noodle combo came with miso soup and a plain sunomono, which came first. The sunomono was standard - very refreshing on a summer's day. The miso soup was very bland and watery tasting - not impressed.

The rest of our order came out shortly afterwards. At first, everything tasted great and very fresh and we were enjoying our meal. Then I went and had a piece of the negitoro roll and everything went downhill from there. As I was chewing (and I'm a very slow and careful eater) i felt something sharp stabbing me in my mouth. I tried to spit out the piece but unfortunately, the fish bone came loose from the roll and got stuck in my throat! The bone went in diagonally in my esophagus, causing me to gag. I ran to the washroom and attempted to get the bone out of my throat but spat out spit full of blood. I was in obvious pain and discomfort from the fish bone and the waitress started to panic. She gave me some water to help me dislodge the bone and did the best she could given the situation.

The owner/sushi chef was not impressive. My brother was obviously concerned and very angry that I was experiencing pain because of the carelessness of the sushi chef so he went to inform the gentleman about the situation. The sushi chef started getting defensive and said that "it wasn't his fault". Well, if it wasn't his fault then who's is it? Me? For ordering it? I'm sorry but I didn't realize that when I ordered the negitoro roll, I was going to get fish bone stuck in my throat and puking out blood in their washroom.

The owner did not apologize once for the incident which made the whole experience that much more frustrating. If he doesn't are enough to take the onus of the situation, then he really shouldn't even be called a sushi chef.

I have managed Japanese restaurants before and every sushi chef that I've worked with, took great measure to separate the meat from the bone to ensure that such incidents did not happen with their patrons. The attitude of this man makes me believe that he did not get proper training to be a sushi chef in the first place.

Please do yourself a favour and avoid this restaurant - Miya does not deserve any business and I'm pretty sure people want to eat to boneless sushi.

Word of mouth is getting around with this place

I tried this place a month or so ago when it opened. The decor is quite pleasing to the eye with lot of use of traditional wood. music was also very calming. The food was quite good, except for the tempura which used too much batter, other than that.. quite perfect.

At that time, we were the only customers there.

Tried them on friday night yesterday and it started getting packed. Good to see that business is picking up for them. I was a little worried they would close down if business did not pick up. Competition is getting hyper fierce in the area when it comes to Japanese restaurants. So many.... Sushi town, Gin Mi, Miya, Sushi Nori, Ashahi, Nagano, Ginza Sushi, Osmanu shusi, Nagasakiya (closed a few weeks ago), etc.

Relaxing Meal

Family wanted to go to Copa Cafe for lunch, but we didn't want to wait after few other parties filled up the entire waiting area. We were going to go to Sushi Town and walked past Miya and decided to give it a try. The decor was very nice and had a zen feel to it. The music was relaxing and the sound system was of good quality. We sat in a booth and felt more private. We got there a little after 1 pm and there was only 2 other tables with customers.

The waitress was prompt in getting us the tea/water and menus. I ordered the bento box with nigri sushi, tempora, house roll, calif roll, salad, and orange wedges. My wife ordered the noodle combo with the chicken udon, calif roll, tuna roll, salmon roll, salad, and orange wedges. Both meals came with miso soup and ebi sonomono. My son had a BC cone and tobiko nigri sushi. He said it was the best cone he ever had, so we ordered another cone for him. My bento box had tempora with really good batter that didn't taste oily. I normally do not like calif roll, but theirs was tasty. My wife enjoyed her food as well. The raw fish was fresh and presented well.

The value was pretty good compared to other Japanese restaurants. We spent $26 before tax and tips and we were all full.

Try their Sesame icecream

One of my friend knows the chef and recommands this place to us, but it's kinda far from where I live so I never get to try it out. My family went to the Golden Ear Park on weekend so we get the chance to try this place out.

We got there around 2pm and there were 2 other tables occupied, so not so busy. We ordered right away and the waitress suggested the daily special Kushi oyster, which is exceptional fresh, my parents don't eat oysters so I just ordered 3 of them (2.00 each), I'm not a big fan of oysters but I do usually have 1-3 of them while I'm having Jap food, I wanted to order more after finished the first 3 but I figured I should save some spaces for other food. But Kushi oyster is recommanded for people who love oysters.

We also ordered Saba fish, prawns and yam tempura and 5 different rolls. My parents don't like raw food so I didn't order any sashimi. I like their miso soup, I don't know what they added, but I do feel it's better than most of the other miso soups I have had. I like their tempura too, it's crispy and you can tell it's fresh made, but a bit oily. I intentionally tried 5 of their different rolls and I do strongly recommand their Philadelphia Roll, it has smoke salmon on top and inside with fresh salmon and cream cheese, I like the texture of it and the cream cheese really goes really well with the 2 different salmons. One of the best roll that I have ever had. Other sushi rolls are all above average and I like the Samba roll too, it's quite simple, just mango on top of California roll, but I like the taste of it.

Last but not the least, try their Sesame ice cream, it's not on the menu, and usually they only provide it to frequent customers, but I think you can request for it. It's really really good, I love ice cream and this one is a must try. Too bad it's airshipped from Japan, and is not on the market, what a shame.

Overall, really good food but it's 45mins drive from my house, so not sure what's the next time I get to come again.

I come to this sushi place all the time. It's changed owners three times now and this is by far the best. The service is one of the things that keep me coming back. The servers are always friendly and eager to help, as well as quick and attentive. The menu provides a good selection and the ambiance is relaxing. The food is consistently good and the prices very reasonable. A nice little neighborhood place.

Sushi Snob

Been here twice for lunch now with a friend and shared our meals. It's pretty good. At first I thought the prices were a bit higher than normal, but the food arrived and I was pleasantly surprised.

Food - 4: I give the food a 4 because they didn't skimp on fillings for the Maki's. Our food came with miso soup. We didn't have to order it separately. Salmon maki was very good. It had a rather large piece of salmon sashimi inside which was quite surprising. The Dynomite roll had 3 pieces of shrimp at all times along the roll and there was avocado! The Negitoro maki was bursting at it's seams. There was definitely more "filling" than rice. Wakame salad was very palate cleansing and delicious. The Unagi nigiri and the Inari nigiri were also good. The Unagi could have had more unagi sauce on it though. The presentation of the sushi was just wonderful. Not just place as they were cut, they were arranged in to shapes (flower, pyramid, etc). I had a salmon teriyaki bento lunch box combo the 2nd time I went there and it was quite good. It came with sunomono, 2 orange wedes, salad, 5 tempura pieces, and a california roll. $8.00 for that particular box.

Service -2: The service was just decent. I don't think they've hired too much staff yet. The first day I went it was pretty quiet and there was only one server and one sushi chef. But it wasn't busy so we were seated right away and tea was brought out promptly. The 2nd time, however, it was a little bit busier and it was a different server. She didn't seem to know how to multi-task. She seated us and failed to bring over any menus. We found that quite odd. We had to wave her over to get the menus. After flagging attempting to flag down the server 3 times we finally got our order in. The chef doesn't know how to prioritize his orders. He made food as the orders came in. The table of 4 kept getting their food and we were sitting there twiddling our thumbs wondering why not even the appy had arrived yet. They still need to iron out the service. The servers need to remember to take finished dishes back to the kitchen with them. Our table was cluttered with empty bowls and plates even though they had come by to check on us already.

Value - 3: As I explained above, I thought the prices were a tad high, but it's worth it. If you would normally get 5 rolls, get 4. I found myself getting full before I had even finished the meal.

Ambiance - 2: It's a pretty typical sushi place. 3 booths along one wall shaped like a boat (the whole place has a nautical theme to it). 4 free standing tables in the middle and then a bench seat that runs along the far wall with tables and chairs to accompany it. Nothing special. Although I must admit their menu is very pleasing to the eye.

If you're going to be in Coquitlam or shopping at the mall and need a bite to eat, come and give this place a try. I will go back again next month to see if they are doing better with service. Otherwise I'll just enjoy the wakame salad.
