Cozy Cafe Style

A quick bite off of North Road. Small place, good food and decent prices. Nothing really wow about it, but their specials is usually good to order off of - lots of variety even though the portions looks tiny, you still leave happy. I heard that this place used to be run by a husband and wife team, and was really good back in the day, but since then they have moved on and it's another Japanese family running the place. They've also recently minimized the size of their little convenience store off of the eating area, so now it's really tiny. We've been here both for lunch and dinner and it's not bad.

We have only had bad experience's

I know this place is just trying to get by so I feel bad writing this review, but we will NEVER go to this place again. We have ordered take out and every single time we have had to wait 3 times as long if not more than they have told us. The last time we went there, we ordered just 2 bento box's to go (ahead of time), they said it would take 30 minutes. So when we arrived we expected them to be ready...not even close. We watched as other came in and left with theirs, we sat patiently and very hungry. Only one guy who spoke very little English (an older male) was working the till and he seemed uncomfortable and very stressed. I felt bad for him. Anyways 20 more min's passed and we went up and asked how much longer, he said "almost ready"...then another 20 min's passed...STILL NO FOOD we we're getting ready to walk out after waiting over an 1hr and 20min's. Then he came out hold 10 BENTO BOXES! We we're like "Umm we just ordered 2, then he just looked at us with a blank stare and grabbed the piece of paper or order form and said "No 10", anyways safe to say we left with the only 2 we ordered and never went back. And my food was cold and I couldn't even eat it, we ended up just going to freshslice in the end...a horrible, crappy evening!

Very bland and boring food

I've only had take-out from there because I would never dine in what looks like a rundown classroom. The california rolls were extremely boring and bland. I do appreciate their grocery store section however, and will continue to shop there just for occasional japanese groceries, although nothing will ever convince me to buy their FROZEN food which is normally made and served fresh, like daifuku and dango. *shudder*

Pretty good Japanese cafeteria style food

Had lunch here last weekend, and you order at the front, and seat yourself, along with getting your own tea, napkins, cutlery and bowls. The service was nice, fast and efficient. Although its self-service except for them bringing out the food, I felt for what it is, you get great service. Food was brought out quickly, servers were friendly and they seemed happy to be there.

Value was pretty good, cheaper than the average place if you order their boxes. I like their boxes, and it has more choice than most places, and has a good variety.

It was cleaner than most places, but plain, so I gave it 3* for ambiance just for being so clean.

Food was between average and great. I shared 2 combos. Ihad their teriyaki beef and chicken, which was pretty good. The cold soba noodles were just average. The tempera was above average. Their sushi/sashimi was pretty good, they gave me wild sockeye salmon, which was tasty, although I have to admit their rice was a bit too soft for my liking. Miso soup was good, and their ebi sunomono was huge but average. The rolls were also above average. The highlight of the meal was the deep fried sundae. I thought it was very good and a great value.

I would return again to try out their other food, and order their sundae again.

Authentic Japanese Food

I have been going to Matsuzushi for many years including the time they were called Fuji-ya, a Japanese grocery store with small eatery. I love the variety and not just serving Sushi. So my husband and I cannot agree on just having sushi, we visit Matsuzushi. I love their Tempura-soba, box, and oden. It is authentic (classic) Japanese food which not everyone likes. I have taken my friends there and she tried Tempura Soba noodle for the first time in her life and loved it. So since then, she tried Tempura-soba in other pleaces but she claims Matsu's soup is the best so far. I have to admit the ambiance is definitely not what this place is about. The place is clean and someone said cafeteria style, I think that is a good way to describe the place. I go there for "FOOD" not for total restaurant experience.

this is one of my favorite japanese places in coquitlam. its a cafe-style place rather than a restaurant, since you order/pay first at the counter and they bring you the food later. the food's great...my friend from japan said it was one of the better places in vancouver that she's had. its owned/operated by japanese ppl, i believe, so you know its authentic. its also quite cheap, probably due to the fact that its a cafe rather than a restaurant.

Worth going to!

Real Japanese food made by real Japanese chefs! If you ever want take out sushi, Matzu is worth going to! The rice if perfect, the taste is perfect and the best part? It will not fall apart like some other places do! Very fresh and the service is excellent! They have a great menu where you have lots of choices to choose from and you know it's fresh when you put it in your mouth! I recommend their Futomaki because not all Japanese restaurants make it the traditional way - Matzu's full of the pink sweet stuff, nice big chunk of tamago (egg), crab meat, kunbu (some type of sea vegetable), and genuine shitaki mushroom! Give it a try!

We have shopped at Coquitlam Matsuzushi several times (there's a small store attached to the restaurant) and have eaten in the small (somewhat cafeteria-style) restaurant twice. They serve a very good variety of well-prepared and tasty Japanese foods, and at very reasonable prices.
The facility is exceptionally-clean and tidy -- and the ttaff courteous and accommodating.
Great spot for lunch.

Not a restaurant

I ordered food at 11:30 am midweek. The server on the telephone said it would be ready to pick up in 20 minutes. To be safe I waited 30 minutes to arrive at their door for a simple order of rolled sushi. Upon arrival (ten minutes late) the order had not even been started. I waited another 20 minutes to receive my order of four sushi rolls.
The rolls were fresh but some aspects of the roll needed improvement.
For the price the food was fine but the service was not and I will not even discuss the 'cafe' element of this establishment.
Spend a few extra dollars and find the places in Coquitlam the have ambience and far better Japanese cuisine.

This place is great value.
I had the special combo for $9.50. It had:
-chicken and beef teriyaki with great sauce.
-tuna and salmon sashimi, fresh and tasty
-miso soup w tofu, seaweed, dried tofu, green onion
-tempura w prawn, carrot, zucchini, broccoli, crisp and clean
-rice
-orange slices

All tasty and fresh. I was stuffed and happy.
I've had the tempura soba which has a great broth.
I recommend.

can't say anything bad...

This place was formerly known as Fujiya. I guess it changed owners or something, but nevertheless the sushi-cafe's food is still very good.

Service and ambience, what can I say? It's not a restaurant, just a place to get some good Japanese food.

It's a small cafe with take-out available. I go here for the take-out. There's a Japanese food store in the same building, so while I wait for the food, I do a little shopping in here if need be.

11 years of good sushi
By caulobacter of Vancouver (1 Review)

I have been eating here for the last eleven years and I can't really complain. The quality of the sushi is great and the prices are even better. I like how they show pictures of all the different dishes they offer and make the sushi right in front of you. The cafe feel is nice, I've brought many people here over the years.

Best sushi in Greater Vancouver!

I eat a lot of sushi and Matsu is definitely my favourite.

The people that run the place are actually Japanese and they prepare everything the "proper" way. It's hard to find Japanese people running a Japanese restaurant in Vancouver. But they do it and well.

I'm now a regular there and they recognize me and I like to believe that they give me "extra" service but they probably don't.

In the little store they have attached, usually the lady is very helpful because everything is written in Japanese so if you have questions she is more than happy to assist.

Either way, I'm always VERY happy with the food and the service.
