Good but not great japanese

After a few more visits here, my opinion of this restaurant has gone down a little. I went for the first time for dinner service this weekend with a few friends. I decided to stay safe and order what enjoyed most, and then order some new items.

I ordered the salmon tataki, which was excellent, but had bones in it. I also ordered ebi sunomono and seaweed salad, which was a little bland, but not bad. I had the super tiger roll which was good, but seemed to be lacking as a "special" roll. I had the chicken teriyaki and the seafood yaki udon. Both the dishes were quite good, the veggies were fresh and tasty as well.

The service I would have given a 2 if this was my only visit, but past visits were between excellent and decent. The servers are relatively friendly, but unprofessional as they seemed to interrupt our conversations and have problems placing dishes on our table when there was plenty of space available. Also there was a quality check, and I said that there was bones in our salmon tataki. The waitress said she would "check with the chef" if it was suppose to be like that. I'm assuming its not suppose to have a bunch of little bones.. of course she never got back to me.

Tiny little place. Inside is unexpectedly nice and fun for a place out here. Another one of those places which wouldn't be ashamed to be situated in Yaletown.

Service was definitely attentive and friendly, just lacking some of that professional polish at the higher-end places. Yes, they did give us a lot of freebies.

We "randomly" ordered a bunch of stuff off the menu and the waitress mentioned that we'd picked some of their most popular items. They turned out good, problem is waaay too many deep fried stuff on the menu, though a lot of them don't say so on the menu.

The food was pretty good, not amazing, but good, especially for way out here in the boonies ;-) The one amazing thing was how fast all the dishes came out. Faster than McDonald's, faster than we could chow down!

Should you come here? Well, if you live or work nearby and don't feel like a long jaunt into town, it's a no-brainer. If you are from elsewhere, hmm... well, it's good. Definitely good effort. It just might be worth a trip. Barely. The value is okay, we were pretty stuffed with all the freebies and stuff, but at the end of the day, the bill still came to over $20 per person (no drinks), and I think I could get better than that elsewhere.

Cool for Coquitlam

Tried Maji for a late lunch and it was pretty good. The place is nicely decorated and spacious. We got to sit in the boat shaped booths-pretty comfy.

We ordered the Hand Made Gzoya, Volcano Roll, and Chicken Yakiudon. In additional to all that, they brought us Yam Tempura Fries, Japanese Salad, Salmon Tataki and the Tropica Pearl dessert all the house! It was such a nice surprise.

The service was fabulous - they really know how to make you feel welcome. Tea was always refilled quickly and they always made sure we were comfortable throughout the meal.

The Gyoza was tasty but the portion a bit small. I thought the mango for the Volcano Roll was actually in the roll, but it was just california roll covered in a mango sauce. Otherwise it was good, but not super wowing. The Chicken Yakiudon was tasty but a bit too sweet to my liking.

I am glad that they showed us their other offerings. I would definitely go back with a group of friends to try out more stuff for sure.

I've read so many great reviews and happened to be in the area for lunch on friday afternoon and decided to take an associate out to check out all the hype.
What a great place. We were greeted by a very sweet server and given menus and offered tea right away. Before we even decided what to eat she brought us a complimentary salad; which had one of the best vinegrettes I've had in a long time.
We ordered the seaworld treasure roll, the hatake roll, the volcano roll and another roll that had crispy panko breading spirinkled over it - I want to say caterpiller roll? - We thouroughly enjoyed all the rolls and were very impressed with the presentation. We were slightly disappointed with the treasure roll as it was basically at jazzed up california roll with a mango drizzle sauce albiet very good but not quite what we expected. Throughout our meal our teas were topped up and we were brought a total of 6 complimentary one bite appy's excluding the salad - we were so blown away by that and were impressed with the care, detail and overall great flavour.
We sat in a very comfortable booth in the mid afternoon, the restaurant had only 1 other patron but I'm sure it gets busy on wknds and at night.
At the end of our meal we were offered their "restaurant book' which was filled with comments by previous diners; we wrote a quick thank you and went on our way; on our way out both the sushi chef and the server thanked us again and welcomed us to come back.
I was really happy that I was able to find a place like that in the area and super stoked that the reviews I've read were all bang on. I would definalty recommend Maji and will return.

I went there last night because of nice comment. This is a small neighbour Japanese rest.

Food: When i tried the frist 2 plates, to be honest, i didn't feel any WOW. However, the last 2 plates were excellent. Must taste the Salmom Fantary. The free salad is excellent too

Service: 100% prefect. Waitress is very friendly. Simile whole day even busy.

Price is awesome. We just order 4 plates. However, the chef give us free salad, apert, 4 roll sushi and dessert. It seems we order a lot. So full and price is very reasonable.

Insider is average

If you walk around there, must go for sure. Even i am living in Burnaby, i go there. ******** TRY ***********

Location is um... I am wondering if they can open in burnaby, such as Metrotown area. I am sure they will be more popular and famous.

A great newly open Japanese place in Coquitlam. The price is reasonable and the portion is good. They are now creating new menu for special rolls and lunch boxes. They have a small sushi bar but great atmosphere. The place isn't big too. However, the service was not bad, my server was friendly. OH and they give out samples, complimentary appetizers. Which is great because we get to try some stuff that we might not order ever.

We stopped by this restaurant on the way back from Church, and it surpassed our expectations. The food were well prepared and very good. The presentation was nice and the waitress was very friendly. I thought the signing a guestbook idea at the end of the meal was very creative.

The best part is all the complimentary dishes we were given throughout the meal. We were so surprised. They gave us free garden salad, yam fries, fish and desserts. It was a excellent experience for us and we plan to return again.

Great service, great food! I agree with the previous review that this restaurant is at the same level with japanese restaurants downtown. They have really unique dishes! It is probably the only place that serves tataki in coquitlam. Although I typically eat it at places like Guu and Zakkushi...it was quite tastey. We got free appis and dessert on top of what we ordered too.

I really like the reason why they named their place "Maji". It is their mission to treat their customers as friends on a personal level and i believe they are doing a great job at it. They like to ask for your opinion for their new menu design, new dishes and so on.

I am definitely coming back and will probably be a regular!

i've only been to maji once and i know that i'd definately go again. when i walked into the restaurant the waitress and sushi bar chef were both very welcoming and loud (in a good way). it kind of reminded me of Guu in downtown. i got a lot of complimentary dishes for me to try. it was all free too! the food was amazing. i really liked ocean delight, which is this creamy cheesy deep fried imitated crab meat. that was sooo good. also be sure to try white bamboo, its tuna deepfried and raw on the inside with a sauce that was incredible. these two are both appetizers.
not only was the food incredible, the service was good too. the waitress came once in a while to take away dishes, to refill water/tea and asked if everything was okay.
they had this really interesting shout too.. although a small place with soft music, the people there made the restaurant very exciting

maji is really worth going for service that is great and sushi that is delicious at an inexpensive price. coquitlam Maji is comparable to the nice high end sushi restaurants in downtown vancouver. i recommend it strongly!

Best japanese food for the best price!
probably the best deal you'll get in the area~ portions are large and servers are incredibly generous, always offering amazing appetizers, always different, always great. Its nice, if you dont know what to order, to try out a complementary appetizer to get some ideas
Everyone was very friendly and the atmosphere was very nice.

Must try:
~Chicken Yakiudon

~Hand Made gyozas

~White Bamboo, Red Bamboo,
~~~just all the appetizers in general! i've never seen many of the items on the menu! they are very original and i look forward to trying another one next time
~ their fried milk dessert. yes. milk.. fried! it was a refreshing new perspective of milk
I havent tried everything on the menu YET, but i definatly reccomend Maji to anyone who loves dining out
Its a hard restaurant to see if u dont know you're way around because its sandwiched between an asian supermarket and a liquor store, but it is definatly worth you're while to check it out!!
