The newest addition to this fine chain of quality steakhouses, a replacement for the restaurant that was formerly on Christmas Way. Great steaks, a casual ambiance and friendly, very knowledgeable staff are the proud and reliable trademarks of The Keg Steakhouse & Bar.
I came here with a couple buddies because we weren't feeling very creative and it was as good as anything I could think of in Coquitlam. We ordered highballs and the coke was flat but our drinks were replaced with somewhat fizzier pop.
I ordered king crab because I didn't feel like steak (maybe coming here probably wasn't the best selection for me). The crab was really good but would have liked to see an extra leg or two for $35. Accompanied rice pilaf was fine.
The restaurant itself is nice and about what you'd expect for a Keg. They have a decent sized patio outside perfect for the upcoming, hopefully beautiful, weather.
We arrived at 5:30 pm and ordered the $28. (10 oz) prime rib last Saturday evening. I had reserved a table in advance. The server took our order and said it would take approx. 25 mins, the food took about 40 mins to arrive but that was ok as we had a loaf of warm sourdough bread while waiting and it seemed pretty busy even though it was early in the evening. I asked for it to be cooked medium. The prime rib was nicely presented, I had the baked potato which was topped with bacon bits, etc. and it was very tasty. There was quite a lot of crispy onions as well piled on the plate. As for the prime rib, it looked pretty good but when I took a bite it was not as juicy as when I had it 3 years ago at this restaurant. It was tender but there was no meat juices visible in the meat, it had good marbling and the au jus was good but just wasn't the same as before. Perhaps the sliced prime rib had been sitting on our plates longer than usual as it sure didn't look or taste like it was just cut and brought over to our table right away, Might return here in a couple years..
I don't get it. I used to go to the Keg and it was an hour or more wait on a Friday or Satuday night. no matter which keg you went to. This is a new Keg - 2 years ish and for the 3 rd time on a weekend I've just walked in at 6 or 7 pm on a weekend night and sat right down.. That had to mean something is wrong. Perhaps it's the prices????
Appetizer prices are ok and so are the wines by the glass but beer at $7.80 a glass with(of course)no prices on the menu is rididculous! Sangria was well priced at $6.95 but not the best I've ever had. My partner had thai chicken which had to have the side of rice pilaf or else it would be a portion for a kindergartener. With the rice it became suitable for a 2nd grader.($17.95) I had a lobster and shrimp salad which at $23.95 they should be embarrassed. THere were exactly 4 pieces of lobster each at less than 1" square and 5 shrimp. The other components of the salad, greens, nuts, corn, blackbeans were also very skimpy which made the salad very small, and not ony poor value but a complete rip off. Their appetizer caesar others were ordering at $6.95 was 3 X the size.
I couldn't bear the thought of another GROSS slice of (factory manufactured Billy Miner pie )for the last 30 years so we checked out. I'm done with this chain. They better reinvent themselves. - a "special" of 1/2 steak and 1/2 lobster tail for $38.95 is just stupid. That's not "special" dudes. Nor is the the Keg.
I hadn't been to a Keg in over 20 years. Mainly because I'm not a huge steak eater. We were given a gift card from a friend, so we decided to give the new Coquitlam location a try.
Parking was nice. They share the parking lot with the Bestbuy, so there's plenty of space.
We were greeted by 3 friendly staff as we entered, and were lucky enough to get the last table for 2 for the evening.
The decor is modern and new, but was a bit on the dim side. I guess some prefer the mood lighting. The bathrooms were a little worse, as they seemed quite eery in the dim lighting.
Our waitress was friendly and efficient, and gave us the specials, as well as details on how their menu worked. I ordered the Filet Minion meal, which came with a 7oz filet minion steak wrapped in applewood smoked bacon, veggies, and a side (I chose fries). My wife ordered the Prime Rib with tiger prawns, with a double baked potato. We shared a caeser salad. There was also complimentary sour dough bread which seemed like it had just come out of the oven.
Everything was amazing. Fresh, cooked to perfection. The filet minion almost melted in my mouth, and was seasoned just right. My wife's prime rib was also very moist and tender, and was excellent with the provided sauces (au juice and horse radish paste). The tiger shrimp were crisp and not overcooked. The tangy fruity dipping sauce for them was refreshing, but not overly sweet.
Price wise, as expected everything is a bit on the higher side, but well worth every penny for the quality of the food. Total for the 2 of us with no drinks, appies or desserts was $85. Not your regular night out, but certainly worthwhile for a special night out.
Overall very impressed, and will return again for another special day!
Fantastic new addition to this side of Coquitlam. A good centrally located Keg. Much better than their old location on the other side of the highway. Been here a few times with friends and family and it never disappoints. This new(er) location was nicely built and has a nice cozy ambiance inside. Service is friendly and pretty efficient. Can't go wrong with their prime rib and anything with surf n' turf. They even gave me a free chocolate lava cake on my birthday last year. That was a really nice surprise. Glad there's a steakhouse close by that won't break the bank. =)
I don't go to the Keg much as I'm basically vegetarian and there are not many options for me. They have sadly ignored vegetarians at this chain. The Last Keg I went to was over a year ago - the one in Richmond and it was Abysmal.
I was worried that we'd have to wait to get in. We went somewhere between 8:30 and 9 on a FRIDAY night and the place was a ghost town. It was almost weird. I was wondering what was wrong with the place. We went into the bar where there was exactly one other couple. What's going on? There was NO atmosphere due to the lack of customers. I was also disappointed to see that the Keg has moved to the teeny black dress-clad blow up waitresses like Cactus club and Joeys. Is it only young men who spend money there? The waitress however was nice except a little over chatty friendly in a tipseeking kind of way.
We had the flatbread with bocconcini and balsamic glaze(amazing) and the tempura beans and asparagus, also excellent. The drinks were fine and the martini I had was really good but for $8.50 I could not taste any booze.
ANyway the place is nice and is the same as the new one in Burnaby. WOnder why there are no customers though? Maybe the HST. I'd go back for apppies but the entrees at up to over $30 are too steep for me at a suburan restaurant.
We had dinner here for the first time on a Saturday night. This is a newer Keg and the atmosphere with the lights turned down low was very nice. We had made reservations for 2 and were seated at a nice sized booth behind a giant barrel which they have throughout the restaurant. Our servers were polite, friendly and helpful throughout the evening. We decided to have the 10 oz classic prime rib dinner and a regular 10 oz prime rib. I like my prime rib medium and it was seasoned and cooked to perfection as always with a nice pink color and it melted in our mouths with just the right amount of marbling. I had fries with it but next time will get a baked potato instead. The au jus and warm bread was good too. It was my boyfriend's birthday so he got a free Billy Miner pie (mocha ice cream drizzled in caramel sauce & sliced almonds in a chocolatey wafer crust). It was large enough to share and quite refreshing. When we have a craving for prime rib we always go back to the Keg...
I have dined at this newest Keg Restaurant now on a number of occasions. It is truly excellent from any perspective. The food is superb, the service consistently attentive without being solicitous and the ambiance of the restaurant engaging and very pleasant. The price is a bargain considering the quality of the food and service.
On my latest visit to the restaurant I enjoyed the shrimp cocktail, the garden salad, the French onion soup and the Keg sized prime rib with a lobster tail. All of the food was excellent. The shrimp were succulent and plump with wonderful cocktail sauce. The salad was crisp and fresh. The onion soup was done superbly. The prime rib was plentiful, well-seasoned, cooked to perfection and highly satisfactory. The lobster was wonderful and most certainly worth the additional price.
My server was pleasant, attractive, engaging, knowledgeable and thoroughly attentive without hovering over the table. She made sure that the food was of the highest quality.
If you would like to dine at a supremely excellent steakhouse I would recommend the Coquitlam Keg without reservation. It just may be the best Keg in the Lower Mainland.
I go to the Keg all the time. This is the first time in Coquitlam. I ordered the Salmon and let the waitress know twice that I want it rare in the middle. Sure enough it showed up very dry and cooked all the way through. She did I good job in her service but me and my friend were not impressed with the food. He orded a steak well done and it was so overcooked it was hard and dry.
We didnt bother complaining because it was already 9 and didnt want to wait for another one. I guess this is what you get when you charge high end prices and have kids that are cooking.
I let it be know in the tip I was not impressed on a bill of $57 I left $60. I ll go back but not to the one in Coquitlam evne though it nice I feel it lack the same quality and consistancy of the Vancouver locations. I must say its a nice location too bad the food is less than average.
So why am I bothering to submit a review. It's always good. Great in fact. I have been going to the Keg for over 30 years. I think I've been to every location. I have never had a bad meal.
The food is always good. There are no surprises. This is the best place for steaks. Just popped into Coquitlam for a casual meal with a friend. I had the shrimp cocktail (huge shrimp) and he had the escargot. You have to have the escargot! We had the prime rib (12oz) and the Sirloin Neptune. Fantastic food. Fantastic service.
No surprises. You can always count on the Keg!
I was very excited to see that they decided to bring The Keg back to Coquitlam. It is a very nicely built and decorated restaurant. I have been to a few locations in Canada and the teryaki serloin never disappoints. The crab legs are also very good.I havn't ventured away from the teryaki serloin but seen as how its so good I don't see a reason to!
My family went to the Coquitlam Keg for the first time to celebrate our son's high marks in high school and to also enjoy Valentine's Day in 2014. An instant hit with us, we'll be back. The food is quite pricey but it is well plated, good portions and very hot. Nice atmosphere, it gets thumbs up and the waitress was attentive, friendly and on top of her game, great service.
