Not like I remember
By royalsam of burnaby (32 Reviews)

We used to go to the old John B across the street so many years ago. When they moved we really never got into frequenting the new digs except on occasion. I met some friends there for lunch one weekday and enjoyed the general atmosphere. The menu was expansive with every thing you could want. Perhaps this was the problem. The server seemed rushed and was non attentive. The food came fairly quickly. No one cared too much for any of it. It was ok but certainly nothing special and not cheap. The yam fries were easily the worst ever. That can happen though as they're hard to do right. All in all I may give it a try again as this could have been a one off but I won't hurry to do so.

Looking Older

I haven't been to the Joh B for a while and noticed the place is starting to look tired. The carpets need to be replaced and the place needs a rennovation. I don't think , however, that look affects their business as the place was quite full. The food was tasty & we had a really good server so we probably go back in spite of the needed updates

Never been here before and WOW the food is great!!!!!!! Big portions and great value for money. I had one of the noodle dishes and it was delicious. My friend had a sandwich and she said it was good also.
Sure the setting is a little bit run down, but I would come here for the food any day!

Great Pub Fare and Brews
By dealornodeal of Port Moody, BC (2 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, April 9, 2011 - 3:12pm [Dine in]

It's much harder to come to this bar now that I have moved to Port Moody ie: the drinking and driving laws, cabs being so expensive, etc. but I realized that after going to a few bars closer that I miss the feeling of what its like being at a great pub. The food is great and has a lot to choose from, sometimes a little too much to choose from, as it is a very overwhelming menu.. The draft beer list is very extensive and they still have live music every Friday and Saturday night. I realized that to take my car there and get a SafeRide home is well worth the $25 bucks because I don't feel ripped off at the John B and I feel very safe, They have huge portions for food, the waitresses look fantastic, and the atmosphere is busy and hopping. I read a few reviews about the place looking worn down, and I don't disagree there could be some small renovations, but the place is clean and well run and has aged really well in my opinion... Has anyone gone to the Frog and Nightgown of late? That to me is a place that warrants being called rundown. Trust me, and make the voyage if you haven't been there in awhile.... you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Great John B Nacho's not GF

I have been a fan of the John B for years as I live in the neighbourhood and have taken many people there - even my mother for their Mother's Day brunch! But just learned of late that their tortilla chip has wheat in it - which is way too bad as I really enjoyed their nacho dishes. I guess all restaurants and pubs etc can change their suppliers as they need to, I can still eat there, but am at the mercy of the wait staff checking on ingredients for me.

Not impressed with restaurant management

The food and staff were good but we were appalled when we overheard a manager berating the service staff. It was rude and unprofessional and made our experience incredibly uncomfortable . We felt terrible for the waitress whom looked embarassed and upset. It ruined our evening. Shame on you John B's.
Will never eat here again.

Typical neighborhood pub
By lesmark of burnaby (72 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 3:50pm [Dine in]

The title pretty much said it - it's a typical neighborhood pub that serves typical pub fare. I ordered the pasta and it was a little on the rich/creamy side but was edible and good. My friend ordered a wrap and she enjoyed her meal. There are some big screen t.v's to catch Canuck's games and can be busy.

Appears there is a local contingent that frequents this pub as can be expected.

Have tried this place a couple times now and really enjoyed. Huge menu or great stuff, fun atmoshphere, and friendly service. An all round good pub. Live music almost nightly. All the fun pub games, racetrax etc. NIce outdoor patio for the smokers.

I went this past Friday and they apparently have a yearly tradition -- singing the Twelve Days of Christmas as a bar! So much fun! My friend and I had a great evening and weren't expecting anything besides a meal. This is a great neighbourhood place. I had a mini burger and a great bowl of clam chowder. Will definitely go back and eat more mini meals! It was well worth the $15 cab ride from my home.

30 years in the business!

Submitted Saturday, October 16, 2010 - 2:48am [Dine in]

I know how strange it looks when people go on these things (online review forums) and review once.... then you never see them review somewhere or something again. If I ever have a real problem with a place I usually call or e-mail the restaurant because it's hard to judge who is truthful on these things. The funny thing is, I am being hypocritical because I am only interested in reviewing this establishment. I have been coming to this pub fairly often in the last two years since I moved in Coquitlam and have always been impressed by the live entertainment such as having a dj, to music bingo (which has since apparently been cancelled), to having an accoustic guitar player on Wednesdays, to always having bands play Friday and Saturdays. I am thoroughly impressed with their massive liquor wall, they have over 20 beers on tap, and the waitresses are neatly dressed, classy. I am a very big fan of how the bar staff seem to always have a shirt and tie. I mean what place these days, even downtown are asking their bar staff to wear ties? This is a local pub who have been in the business a long time, and they're a good one. I also wanted to mention that they have an amazing crab and steak meal on their menu that is just under $19, like wow! They must have recently put out a new menu, because almost everyday I am seeing new food specials. The reason why I decided for the 1st time to write something is that I look at the lower comments and I find sometimes this place may get unfairly treated by people that may or may not have had a bad experience. There management is very quick at responding to issues, and are very attentive. They care about making people happy and I know that on the busier days they have a good management crew on the floor. I mean it is a bar people... problems will occur when liquor is served. I know first hand, and this is why I will never have another house party again. Sorry getting off topic.I don't know why more people don't compliment this place if anything, maybe it's because it's been in business so long people tend to forget the always solid places and run towards the new, new, new, trendy places.. This place is worth checking out and giving them a shot. It might not be for you specifically but that is why there are lots of different style bars and restaurants but, for me specifically, it's the bar I like to call home. Good job guys!

We have been been going to the John B for over 25 years, ususally every week or so, we have noticed an extreme drop in service over the past few months, tonight was the worst, and when we complained to bar management, saying how disappointed we were, the manager sneered and said "so?" we left. totally unimpressed with what used to be a good neighbourhood pub. will definitey be telling ALL our friends not to bother going here, and looking for a new establishment to spend our hard earned dollars in.

I have never had a burger bigger than the South Burger. It was amazing. I admit that the menu is hard to accept upon first glance, as there is probably over 125 things on it, but it is a great selection and it actually tastes great. I have been coming here once every few weeks for lunch, and enjoy the fireplace and the coffee. Worth coming by for a drink after work, as they have a very good selection of liquor. If anything the carpet looks rough, but I enjoy the tasteful vintage bar look.

Don't be Late for Brunch
By santadale of Coquitlam (1 Review)
Submitted Sunday, October 24, 2010 - 3:52pm [Dine in]

I called the John B Pub in Coquitlam to see what time their Sunday Brunch was. I was told 10 am to 2:30 pm. I was running a little late and arrived at 2:16 pm, before 2:30. I was refused service. I pointed out that it was not 2:30 as of yet and was refused again.

So, I cannot review the food as I did not have any, however, I can review the management. THEY LIE. When I am told something is on until 2:30, then it it is on 'til 2:30, not 2:00 or 2:15, but 2:30. The food was still out and everything. I went because it was open late and because of the price, $16.95. I however will never set foot in there again.

So be warned goers, don't even be slightly late, they won't serve you Brunch.

Disappointed in Coquitlam.

The John B has been around for a long time, and it's a great neighbourhood place to get together with friends for a couple drinks. The food is okay - it's pub food, so don't expect too much. The decor obviously hasn't been updated much since it opened - it's kinda like the t.v. show Cheers. I guess it's not that bad. Lately, the servers have been getting younger and younger and dressing more scantily clad than usual. I don't know if this is a change in management and new policies or what, but the guys I know seem to like it, and I get a good laugh out of it, so it's working on some level. However, the waitresses for the most part are not very friendly and seem like they would like to be else where doing other things. Some of them are really nice so I guess that balances out the other not-so-nice ones. Hopefully, you sit in a section of a nice one. Other than that, the patio is decent and there's never a line or fights like other local "pubs"

Was here for men's gold medal hockey game, Canada vs. USA
By WestCoastMunchers of Coquitlam (34 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, March 18, 2010 - 7:47pm [Dine in]

Our friends came early Sunday morning to grab a table. I know pubs and bars downtown Vancouver had massive line ups well before the game started though did not know this place would be super busy too.

We have never gone inside this pub until Feb 28, 2010. From the outside this place does not look that great, though when you go inside it is quite impressive. There are big TV screens in every corner of this pub. The seats and tables are really nice too. It is really cosy inside.

People were ordering drinks and food pretty well as soon as they got in early Sunday morning. Soon this place got packed out with no seats left and standing room only. I guess that was to be expected.

Even though this place was super busy we got incredible, swift service. The manager came on the PA to say getting food to tables may take a little longer than normally as they were so busy. Having said that we got our food pretty quickly and our server would always make sure we were all happy despite having to attend to many more tables.

The pub gave us freebies to enjoy the hockey game more which was a nice touch. The manager came on the PA several times to make sure everyone was doing well. I thought his candour was very appropriate and well received.

The food was pretty decent too. When Canada won the gold medal we all got a free pint of Canadian. This place obviously looks after its clients and wants to make sure you do come back.

I agree with Server86 - John B

I have to agree with "server86" and their comments on the servers. I have been going to the John B for over a decade now and the I LOVE the food and atmosphere (very Cheers like & comfortable), however, the servers can be snooty and plain dumb. Other than that I would recommend eating at John B and if you get a ditz serving you lodge a complaint.

not very modern, but okay for pub food
By sonatina of Vancouver (29 Reviews)

I got the cajun salmon burger and my friend got a rib burger. He ordered yam fries but they gave him french fries (we didn't find out until we arrived home with the takeout). The burger was huge, but I had to take out the onion rings and pickles and then it was rather delicious, not amazing though. My friend thought his burger was "messy". We got takeout because the pub seemed a bit old and not that comfortable to sit in even thought the waitress was extremely friendly. I prefer a more modern, cleaner-feel environment for dining.

Heard about this pub, and since we were in the area, and we were hungry, we wanted to try it. The patio was busy, and it was a fair size. We stayed inside, it was a little cooler. Very nice pub, very roomy. We ordered the Blue Ribbon Burger (beef), with fries and chipolte mayo on the side. We also ordered the halibut burger, with caesar salad on the side. Both were very tasty. Burger was cooked just right. The fish was a nice size. I sampled some of the caesar salad, and it was good. Service was great, our server was very nice and knowlegible about the menu.
