bad beef dip
By carinaycc of North Vancouver (13 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, April 30, 2012 - 2:28pm [Dine in]

We were supposed to go to White Spot for lunch on a saturday, however, my friend took the wrong turn, and we ended up at Joey's. Which was ok, because as we dined, more and more families were coming in with their toddlers (my friends say that white spot is always packed on the weekends and this was probably their back up plan).

Having said that, the staff was very friendly, but dissappeared for a good amount of time when we finished out meal and wanted to pay. we had to go hunt them down because our toddlers were getting antsy after their meals.

I had ordered a beef dip with fries. The beef tasted old and flavourless and lacked seasoning. It came on a ciabatta bread, which was too big for the amount of beef they gave. I would definatly not order it again.

My husband ordered their california chicken burger, a MUCH better choice. it was delicious and had the right kick with the spicy mayo and arugula.

And we ordered a cream of mushroom soup (chantrelle mushroom) for our 21 month old son to share with his 16 months old friend, whom both loved it. It was definatly homemade and very tasty.

Would probably not go back just because it's a bit pricy for the inconsistency of the food that they serve.

Was into this location a few weeks back to try the wood cooked flatbread was told to try the tandori chicken version. It looked nice a bit small in size for the $14 price tag. The beard had a nice crunch but unfortunatly all I could taste was the chutney and cilantro. I could not see much chicken let alone taste it. Very disapointed over all evem more so when I had to pay $6 for a beer. At $10 and less spice and more chicken I would have been happier.

Service was good very friendly no one appeared to be sitting around all staff was moving and working to keep guests happy. Nice set up with the exception of the entrance to the parking lot you can easily take the first entrance that will bring you to a differnet complex. I personally have driven past this location 100's times but the road sign really does not stand out too well in that location. In any case I will keep on passing by in the future.

A Pleasant Surprise

For our anniversary my husband and I decided to try out Joey's. Boy, are we sure glad we did. The restaurant is very well decorated with a great ambiance. Everything we ate was top-notch and so delicious. We had the calamari to start and it was nice to see it had an aioli dipping sauce as opposed to the typical tzatziki sauce. We then each had the chicken and ribs combo and everything on that plate was simply divine. I was pleased to see strawberry shortcake on the menu because you don't often see it as an option. It was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. It's not the cheapest place to eat but considering the quality of the food we received, it was worth every penny. We will for sure be heading back for our next special occasion.

Not as good as it used to be...

Went there after work one night. It's been a while since I've been here, and I had a good experience last time I was here, so I figured I would come eat here again.
Service was prompt and friendly, and I was seated right away, but I would expect nothing less from any restaurant I go to.
I ordered ahi tuna sandwich, it came in under 10 mins, at which I was quite impressed. The flavour of the sandwich was good, but the red pepper relish was a little sweet for my taste though, and instead of the ahi tuna being seared to rear, it was completely cooked through. The fries were a little tough. Wasn't too impressed by the food.
Came dessert time, the reason why I chose to go there was for a taste of their banana cake. It sounded awfully good on the menu. To my disappointment, they just took it off the menu a week ago! So I went for the apple tart instead. I've had it once before and quite liked it. Can't really go wrong with apple tart with almond slices, puff pastry and a scoop of vanilla bean ice-cream...boy, was I wrong! The apple and almonds were alright, but the puff pastry was definitely undercooked, doughy and wasn't really edible. Another major disappointment of the night.
They did take the dessert off my bill, but the food just didn't leave a good taste in my mouth. It'll be some time before I go back there, that's for sure.

Ok so I stopped going here once they made it very clear on TV and in the news that they do not like kids. They got rid of the kids menu, high chairs and change tables(as did Earls). So, they lost my business for many years. Not because I wanted those things, just because it was(is) blatant and apparently acceptable discrimination. I have not problems with well behaved kids. I have a problem with drunk losers, which you find more of here than I ever saw over poorly behaved kids. However, drunk losers pay more than well behaved kids. Cha ching.

So I had to go here for lunch. Even at lunch the strippers(oops waiteresses) were barely dressed. The waiter however was wearing long pants and a long sleeved shirt. Note - I would have tipped more had he been in a Speedo. I guess he had too much pride.

I had the Thai prawn and rice bowl thing - very good and probably too spicy for most people. I was ok with it. The Caesar salad was extremely good with house made croutons. Our bar waitress became much less interested in us once we ordered Cokes - that's weird.

All in all food was good, and only slightly over priced for lunch. I would not wait more than 30 minutes at dinner time however.

Absolutely Wonderful and in Coquitlamn

So, I love good food, wine and ambience, and the keg and sushi weren't doing it for me. I wanted something special for my date and freedom from now ex-wife, so my blondie girlfriend and me finally could walk proud in public and we tried out Joey.
The interior is superb, modern and chic, but really comfortable. I loved the set-up of the bar with the ice displayed under it!
We shared a bottle of wine and got some complimentary champagne. The oysters were awesome and we both had the fish that was so right.
The waitress was saucy cute and the tallest girl in miniskirt in the whole room. Blondie hostess was not bad by all means either.
For $68 we had food, wine, candy and great ambience. Enjoyed my freedom celebration.

Joey's always offers an extremely high quality guest experience. Their strongest point is the consistent tasty food, quality service, and good atmosphere. I rate this restaurant heads above other moderately priced 3 ring binder style eateries, such as Moxies, Earls, Milestones, Browns etc...
Joey's does not offer baby, or child seating in their restaurant. Kids are great. But, I appreciate the calm dining experience this policy creates. Joey's belinis are fantastic, as are their desserts. Servers are highly trained and round out the experience nicely. Great for lunch or dinner.

Downside? There can be a long wait for tables during busy hours.

I went to Joey's for a business lunch and to be honest, I was not looking forward to it. I remember this place from a visit a few years ago and it was loud and not very good. What a difference a little time and a reno makes!

I was seated in a nice booth at once by the friendly hostess, and soon a server was telling me about the menu items. I had the burger and salad. I found the burger to be juicy and very flavorful. My salad was also good. I didn't have much of the Edge wine my companions enjoyed, but what I had was smooth and tasty.

The ambiance was very nice and comfortable and a huge change from the previous appearance of this place.

Overall a good lunch and an experience I will soon repeat.

Recommended.

The chicken that did me in....

Food: Had these california sushi tacos to start and they were awesome but really pricy for just 4 small tacos ($9). I ordered the rotisserie chicken while my bf had the ribs. Chicken was good and it was a very large portion but needed more gravy since there was so much chicken and mashed potatoes. The ribs were good as well but pricy - a half order was $17 and was not nearly enough. They have these thin small fries there and I'm not quite sure whether I like them or not - I guess they're ok but remind me of Mcdonald's fries. Disappointing selection of desserts.

Service: We went on a Thurs night so we were seated right away which is a nice change from having to wait an hour. Server was friendly and was quick to refill our waters. When we ordered the tacos, she took the time to explain what they were so we were sure of what we wanted.

Ambiance: A little loud but not too bad since the restaurant wasn't full. I think next time, I'm going to be asked to be seated in the room beside the entrance where it's much quieter. Decor is really nice (but what's with the squiggly glass thing in the middle of the room??) and booths really comfy. It's def. a place you can take a date.

Overall: I'll probably return since the food was really good but not until I get paid cuz it's a tad on the pricy side.

Joey's was more interesting before

I love going to Joey's for two things. Their chili chicken appetizer, and the Joey's appie pie. It has to be the best apple pie I've ever had. I have to say that after their renovations a couple years ago, Joey's just isn't the same. Now, the restaurant has a real fancy feel to the place decorated with dark wood furniture, hand-blown glass sculptures, lush expensive sofas. The last two times I went, I found the menu to be lacking of choices and expensive too. I don't remember spending over $50 for dinner for 2. The Joey's I knew and loved was a fun place with eccentric and neat little decorations like abstract ceiling art and tricycles on the wall. When you ordered one of their signature dishes, the jambalaya, the server makes you say it loud enough so the chefs in the open kitchen can hear you. You only get your order if they repeat it back to you. And they also had this neat thing where if you get selected, they take you up on a crane and have you drop a tomato in a bucket from up above. If you get it in, you get a $50 gift certificate. Needless to say, they don't have any of these perks anymore.

Love their pitchers of Bellini. So peachy and not at all watered-down. Tasty food. Comfy sunroom area. If it wasn't located so far away, I'd be frequenting there more often.... They may very well be a notch above Moxies, but very similar to Moxies/Cactus all the same.

A Favourite in Coquitlam

Until the location on West Broadway took over, this was the location (actually this was the only location) I came to.

It's location is a bit of an anomoly. Located on Lougheed Highway and partially blocked I've missed the sign the first couple of times here.

Hostesses open their front doors and greet you happily as you enter is how I enjoy coming here. Everyone does their best to put on a good face to ensure a happy dining experience.

Decor is a little more rustic compared to the other locations, which is a little more hip and upbeat. Menu is the same and we stick with what we like, usually. Food is always a carbon copy in execution; a little more original and a little better tasting than your typical chain.

Servers are attentive and polite. You can start up a brief conversation or pick their brains for a menu item they recommend. They're also one of the fewer and fewer chain restaurants that actually ask you if you want dessert. You'd figure for servers who base their position on tips they'd want you to pad their pockets a little more. It's no deal breaker for me but it's nice to know that your server actually cares to be there serving for you. Oh well.

Coquitlam isn't a place I would prefer to stay in if I wanted to eat a sit down meal but this place time and time again comes to the forefront if I'm in and around.

Like Earls, but maybe a bit better?
By Kujibo of West Vancouver (127 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, June 2, 2007 - 12:59pm [Dine in]

So this place is pretty much an Earl's clone. I think the decor is a bit nicer than the typical Earl's though. It makes you feel good hanging out in there.

Food is also similar to Earl's but a bit different, so it's nice to try a few different things. Only dissapointment so far was some greek appetizer platter we ordered which was supposed to be a variety of things (kalamari, etc.). Problem is it was 3/4 pita bread (like 20 slices or something). Just WAY too much pita bread, got totally sick of it.

Service is good, obviously they take care in this area. Lots of eye candy in this department too which I'll never complain about. It's funny when it starts to get busy they even have a curtain at the front door to divide people showing up and waiting from the dining area. Almost like going into a club. Kind of a nice touch actually so you don't have to stare at the horde eyeing your table which can be a bit nerve wracking.

Don't bring your young kids here, as they hate them (you can google up on it). No high chairs, etc. They want to keep it to a certain vibe, fair enough. That said we did bring your 3 year old here once before we knew better and they didn't look at us too funny.

Joey's was sure a surprise. I was here for an anonymous date and we started with Margaritas which came fast and were really goof.
We started with tacos and a salad. They were delicious but kinda hot. We ordered steak and fish with wine. My girl said her fish was perfect. We added some wine for dessert. It is a cool place.I like the food and service (you know what I mean) at Cactus Club but I think Joey's is now a favourite for these kinds of dates. The food is good, the wine list is acceptable, the location is very good for us and I have to say the skirts are short.

We decided to try Joey Tomato's last time we were in Coquitlem for lunch, as neither of us had ever been to this particular location. The service was really good, very efficient and helpful. We both ordered the Evil Jungle Noodle Salad, it was very good, but I'm not sure any salad is worth $14.95 (especially because I'm a vegetarian and ordered no chicken.) Overall a very pleasant experience, think If I returned I would go for dinner and order an entree for roughly the same price, maybe a few dollars more. $40.00 seems a little expensive for two salads and two waters.

tucked away in a nondescript suburban strip mall. We went for dinner last night with friends, four of us in total. Get there early! it fills up fast ( a good sign?), and they don't take reservations. Parking is limited, they do have valet parking if it gets too bad, i believe it's comp and they even vacuum your car! tip these kids well people, they deserve it! The food and ambiance was great as well as the service. I recommend the Ahi tuna taco appy and any of their bowls. They served complimentary snacks while we waited and the whole experience was enjoyable. Good value, great service and good to great food! I'll try their Burrard location next. Highly recommended.

I have dined at this establishment on numerous occasions and it has been consistently good. The food is outstanding as is the service. The appearance of the greeters and the waitresses is way, way above average. The are both friendly and comely. The atmosphere is lovely. The portion sizes are good and you will not leave hungry. Overall, this is an excellent eating establishment although I must say that on my last visit they had deleted a delectable and savory dumpling appetizer from their menu which I found disappointing.

After being at Joey Tomatos in Coquitlam, and hearing that its better than the Broadway location, I don't think I would really come back unless my friends wanted to go.

I think this place is no better than Earls or Cactus or Moxies...the food is not that special and it doesn't live up to the hype.
I came in here expecting many things. The appetizers, however were pretty good; the ahi tuna tacos were delicious....but easily falling apart, the edamame was alright, but I'm not a fan of edamame in the first place. The sweet chili chicken was good, but I wouldn't really order that because I can get the same thing with bigger quantity at a chinese or korean rest. with a cheaper price.

My chicken souvlaki sucked. For that price, I can get souvlaki thats so much better....and their fries did not impress me at all. Maybe I picked the wrong one....I wanted to try the ahi salad, but I've heard a lot of bad reviews about it....so I took it safe. Maybe I should have risked that chance.
My friend's diva salad was alright. She told me that it was better before and there was too much seasoning in this one....but I thought it was alright. However, I really think it would be better with focaccia or some other type of bread....I didn't like the idea of having a huge taco shell for a side order.
Dessert wasn't that great. Apple pie.....yeah, ordinary. The apples were too thick to be enjoyed, and the crust and bottom fell apart too easily that we had trouble eating it.

Service was awesome though. Give props for that.

Nonetheless, I don't really have the urge to go back. I'll try out the Broadway location for the patio...but other than that.....I don't want to go back really. I rather stick to Earl's or Moxies.

Probably the best ambiance in town

Submitted Friday, September 24, 2010 - 9:50pm [Dine in]

I went to Joey last night with friends for a meal and some relaxation. We arrived at 8:30 and there was heavy traffic on the road (busy clubbing night?). We called from the car to make sure they knew we were coming, and were informed that they would hold a table for us which was great service.

I believe we got into the reception area at 8:35 and there was a hostess at the door who greeted us and wondered if we were the party that called. The cute blond hostess informed us that we were welcome and our table was ready and waiting.

Even if it was just her, I would have given 5 stars for service, but our waitress was also really great. She was knowledgeable about the food and drinks and was able to suggest items for us when we had trouble. She was also extremely confident in her beauty.

The rest of the evening went very well, however the food wasn't all that fast in coming. I was expecting top notch speed because it was later but that is probably because they were busy anyway.

As for tip, we gave 20 percent on a 265ish bill...I think 15 percent for the beauty of the waitresses and their cute dresses is probably a little undertipping, after all they are trying hard for their patrons.

We made the mistake of coming here with a 4year old. Not a great place for kids. Its almost like they had never seen one before.

The ambiance and decor is great, the food is OK, and the service is young and and kinda green. Sometimes I would prefer the ugly server if she does a better job.

I would choose Cactus Club over this spot anytime. Better service, food and value.
