Mediocre at best

Went there for lunch with my husband because I really felt like having some wonton noodles in soup yesterday and Hon's was the first place that came to mind.
Service was prompt and the food came extremely fast. Nothing special about the food. The noodles came in one big clump in the bowl, and each of the wontons had one single shrimp in it, and they were mushy, and possibly not very fresh, that was maybe why they had to mask the taste with a ton of pepper. The pot stickers were smaller than I remembered and they were very greasy.
All in all, will not be back for wonton noodles in soup.

I was happy that they had Hon's in Coquitlam cuz I was around that area and craving for Buddha's Feast w/ crispy noodles. But boy was I immediately disappointed. The way the restaurant was set up feels like I was in Hong Kong or something. It was disorganized and all over the place. Their Buddha's Feast's veggies were not fresh and limited and they used a different kind of noodles. It didn't taste right. It seemed like they ran out of ingredients so they just winged it. Terrible.

I only recommend the Robson Location.

We have been to Hon's for many years but have lately come less often due to the decline in the quality of the food. We ordered some black bean sauce chicken chow mein. I bit into a piece of chicken and noticed immediately it was not freshly cooked, but tasted stale, or sitting around for some time or leftover chicken from the day before. You can tell the chicken is freshly fried if its juicy but this looked totally white, was dry and had a bad taste to it. We immediately advised the server and told her the chicken tasted awful and we wanted beef chow mein instead. She said it would only be a few minutes so we waited and then they brought in another batch of chow mein with the beef. It was a definite improvement but the noodles were dry and the beef wasn't flavored that well but it was okay.. We will probably not be returning for a long time..

Mrs. C and I were in Coquitlam once again, and our stomachs were rumbling. She suggested Hon's and I immediately agreed. The place is smaller than most locations in the chain, but has all the menu items I crave. This time they had a special for $6.99 which included 6 potstickers and choice of 3 other dishes. We went for the potstickers and congee, and we added curry beef brisket with rice. That was more than enough for two hungry diners.

The curry was pretty good, and the congee had an unusual flavor with pieces of dried orange peel giving it a tangy twist. The potstickers were great as usual. Service was quite good, and the ambiance is clean, but functional rather than fancy.

All in all a good square meal.

Beware when do you take out Chinese BBQ !
I was waiting for my wife outside while she was lining up to order some BBQ ROAST PORK
I noticed she was next in line to order, so I went outside to watch the chef cut the meat.
She was to order 4lbs of the roast pork. the chef weighed the pork.. priced the box.. then proceeded
to cut the meat... I quickly noticed that he cut a large piece away and put it to the side... He boxed it up..
and I told my wife what I saw.. We went home Quickly and weighed it on our scale... We were shorted 1lb
of the meat... I went back to hons and confronted the manager and the chef... I got them to weigh the pork again ... and it also showed that I was ripped off 1lb... The manager insisted that he only made a mistake
.. But this just confirms my years of patronage there, I was suspicious with a few of my previous visits .. they appeared to be less than what I ordered... I am sure I was ripped off all those years also!!! thanks to my trusty food scale... I will Never go back to HONS ever again!!!!! My word to you is to do not have them cut the meat!!! you cant see what they do behind the chopping area!!! At TNT they have see through windows... so they are not tempted to save some meat for their family when they go home!!! One word about HONS "SCAMMERS"

Worst wonton ever - should take out the wun tun name, just lousy chinese food

I just can't believe how this place has gone down the hill over the years. After a night at the movie we had cravings for some chinese food. I told my wife why don't we check out Hon's because they open late. What a mistake! We got there almost 9 pm and there were people still eating. So we ordered wonton large noodle soup, beef with satay sauce rice noodle and curry beef stew on rice. The food came fairly quick. The noodle soup came first and it was not cooked properly, the noodle was still very chewy. The soup itself was bland and the wonton tasted like stale meatloaf. This is probably the worst wonton we've ever had. Hon's need to be ashamed that they can't even make their specialty right. The curry beef stew was average at best and the beef was a little tough and bland. The only thing decent was their rice noodle dish despite it only came with few slices of beef. Hon's need to take quality control seriously. First, start with the lady behind the noodle counter, she need to learn basic things like how to boil noodle. She probably just landed from china and started working at Hon's. My wide egg noodle tasted like undercooked fettuccine. Also their noodle broth is so water down, not enough flavor and so bland. A good noodle broth like in other chinese noodle congee place is usually rich with flavor. We are really disappointed with Hon's and we will not be in hurry to come back. No wonder why Hon's closed their Richmond store, they won't stand a chance competing against many good restaurants in Richmond. For a real chinese place in the area we'd recommend Deer Garden across the street. You'll get more quality and value.

We went here today, after not eating at Hon's for about a year. We were seated very quickly and water and tea were brought to our table. We went there on a Saturday at noon time and the restaurant, which was normally very busy in the past, was pretty empty. Not sure if this was a good sign.

We ordered one of the set combo menu's for one, 6 potstickers and an assorted beef with noodles in soup. The price used to be just under $7, but now it's nearly $9. Also ordered, a dish of pan fried flat rice noodles with beef and a plate of bbq pork on rice. Noodle dish was $8.50 and the rice dish was $7.95. The potstickers were pretty standard, quite greasy though. The beef in noodle soup was very good. Lots of tender soy sauce stewed beef flank/brisket type of meat and tripe in a dark tasty broth. The good thing is that they didn't serve any weird liver/spleen type of meat anymore like they used too. I like tripe and other weird cuts of beef, but draw the line at liver/spleen. Yuck. The rice noodles were good, as was the bbq pork on rice, but how the hell can you screw that one up?!! The bad thing was that the portion sizes were tiny, compared to the price. You used to be able to count on Hon's for providing large portions for cheap prices. The rice noodle and rice dish was about 25% smaller in size and the price increased by about 30%. To me, that is not good value.

Service was quick and efficient, nothing outstanding. You order your food and they plop it on the table. Ambiance? What ambiance? The restaurant is clean, but utilitarian and they have those plastic plates, spoons and chopsticks.

Lunch for 2 adults and 2 children came out to $31 after tax and tip. We were full, but a year ago, the same meal would have cost about $5 - $6 cheaper, HST notwithstanding. The kicker was after I had paid, I wanted to get a chinese donut (yuo tuo) at the take out counter. They used to have great yuo tuo, about 14 inches long, crispy, yet chewy for only 80 cents for 1 pair. I asked for one order, expecting 1 pair of donut. What I got for $1.20 was a single donut, not a pair, about 8 inches long, very dark, dry, and overcooked. Not good.

I'm not sure what happened to this place. It's been declining in value, quality and quantity for the past several years now. I knew they had some financial problems a few years ago with rumors of insolvency and bankruptcy and unpaid wages to workers. Maybe they got out of trouble, but with the way things seem to be going now, they probably won't be in business for very much longer. And that is a shame for a what used to be a Vancouver tradition.

...I always hit up Hon's. Fresh, fast, umami! I love going here, especially in a group. My faves are the congee, vegetarian crispy noodles, pork and shrimp fried rice, and of course the pot stickers. The gai lan is also worth a try. I haven't actually tried the noodles, but the wor wonton was pretty darn tasty! I live nearby, so I know there will be plenty of opportunities ahead...

Not a Relaxing Place but Good

This place is so efficient that it allmost makes it unrelaxing. The servers are at your table in a minute and they send the orders in via hand held computer & usually the food arrives under 10 minutes. The portions are huge and under $ 10.00. As you finish your last bite they are there to clear off your table & present your bill. Great if you are in a hurry but sometimes I find it a little rushed but I always go back.

Hon's in Coquitlam is typical Hon's in that you know what you are going to get and it will be quick and consistent.

The review by hungrydog is hilarious! Yes - I agree that I too have heard 'the dragon'. That thing is loud and it has given my mom a headache after we ate there (not from the MSG but the dragon y'all). We haven't been back but the kitchen is really noisy and can/will/has ruined eating experiences.

Also, be careful of the cooks across the way where some of the dishes are made - I and others have noticed some mishandling of food by the cooks.

wontons & frozen siu mie gone downhill

Hon's used to serve really good quality wontons that were large, really good texture, good flavour... recently we had won ton soup and they were really awful. Not horrible but what a difference from last year.. they were mushy and did not even look like hon's wontons that have been served before.. even the broth is so watered down now.. the wontons used to be a bit chewy in texture with a great shrimp flavour, now they are totally bland and soft. Also purchased a frozen pack of hon's siu mie (pork dumplings) to see how the flavour was and after they were not good but dry and lacked any flavour.. if this is your signature dish, please try to make some improvements...

Beware - Under New Management

On a cold, rainy night this week I headed to Hon's for my wonton fix, something I have enjoyed many times in this restaurant and I had come to expect reasonably priced, decent food and really quick service. The place was always packed so you knew it was popular. Well be warned; they are now under new management and after my bad experience I would never go back to this restaurant.

As I reviewed the menu I noticed that the prices have increased and when I finally placed my order the waitress mumbled as she walked away that my food would take 10-15 minutes even though there were barely five tables of patrons in the place. I was so surprised that I actually asked her to confirm that I heard her correctly because I have never waited more than 5 minutes for my food before. After waiting 15 minutes my veggie spring rolls came out but no soup, I noticed right away that they were dry and tasted awful, nothing like I remember. Then the waitress came over to ask me if I had received my wonton soup, which I hadn't (obviously cause it wasn't on my table), so she ran around trying to figure out what happened to my order. After about another 5 minutes she brings over my wonton soup, which I can tell right away upon tasting is nothing like Hon's quality and then it dawns on me that they are under new management because so much has changed. I decided to ask on my way out to confirm my fear and the woman at the register confirmed that yes - they are under new management. I told her that I could tell and that I would not come again because the food was so poor.

As I said, this place used to be a great restaurant for fairly decent Chinese food at reasonable prices, it was a guaranteed thing - but no more. Don't waste your money!

I would never say it's the best Chinese food you can find in the Lower Mainland but one of the best for quick Chinese food in Tri-Cities (Hon's wouldn't make the top 10 in Richmond).

I'm never dissapointed because I know what to expect when I go.... A noisy, quick, reasonably priced meal and I always enjoy the potstickers

You can feel the buzz of the energy as you enter Hon's restaurant. The young woman at the door told us we could expect to wait about five minutes for a table; in less than five minutes we were seated at a table. We were given the daily special menus as well as the voluminous regular menu; there are far too many choices for me to comprehend so I try to stick to the specials.

Tea was quickly brought to our table; however, when we asked the tea server about the dinner menu she curtly told us that she was not our server and then turned and walked away. We were a little taken aback at this attitude but were quickly reassured by the woman who then arrived to take our dinner order.

We asked a couple of questions about the menu and our server readily answered them with very good suggestions. She recommended that we start with six of the vegetarian pot stickers and then for us to have the vegetarian hot and sour soup (which turned out to be fabulous!). For the main dishes we had a dish of gai lan with prawns, cod and squid. This was also cooked to perfection with the gai lan crisp to the bite but not too raw. To round out our choices we added a dish of Shanghai noodles with vegetarian ham. The food was excellent and filling; we were able to leave with a container of noodles and a small bowl of the soup for lunch the next day.

As is the case in all the Hon’s that we have visited in the past, the amount of noise from the myriad conversations that are taking place was loud but not unpleasant. However, the constant roar coming from the kitchen was really extraordinary. It almost sounded like there was dragon caged in the kitchen and being forced to cook everyone’s meals with bursts of flame.

Overall, another very enjoyable dinner was had. You know going into Hon’s that you are not going for a quiet evening. Hon’s Wun-Tun House provided us with another very enjoyable meal.

Food Court Has Better Chinese Food

I was sick recently and I was really craving for some good ol' comfort food in the form of a nice hot bowl of congee. It was late and I didn't feel like driving very far to get take out so against my better judgement, I went to Hon's. I ordered what could only be the most basic can't-go-wrong style of congee (salty pork with century old egg congee, equivalent to wonton noodles in terms of popularity) and to my dismay, they managed to royally mess that up. The ingredients in congee are supposed to be cooked with the rice so that the flavours are all absorbed during the process. My congee on the other hand, it was blatantly obvious that they had a big pot of plain congee and had just thrown the cooked ingredients in there, hence, making the congee completely bland. For a Chinese restaurant with a reputable name that has boasted decent food for years and years, this was embarrassing! We've had less than average meals here before, but this was definitely the last time for me. I'm sorry to say, you can probably find food court Chinese food that would taste better.

Hon's might not be the most relaxing, sophisticated place to eat, but like the description says, it is a cafeteria style restaurant. They pack as many people as possible into the restaurant and pack as much food as possible into them.

The food is consistently good. I recommend the deep fried cod in spicy bean sauce. Also good is the wonton soup and the vegetarian chicken with diced vegetables with cashews. All really good staple dishes, maybe not the most authentic but I always get a tasty meal for a really good price.

The service is efficient though not particularly friendly. They get the job done though and the food comes very quickly.

The ambiance is mediocre but its too be expected in this type of restaurant. You aren't paying to be doted upon in a fancy restaurant, Hon's is for quick tasty eats for a really good price.

Tonight I had a craving for wonton soup so, I decided to call up Hon's and also get a few other things with delivery. I remembered that I had ordered from them once before and the food seemed decent. The person taking the order could not decipher a 0 from a 4 (slight language barrier, but no big deal) in our phone number and after many attempts to clarify, we gave up thinking that at least they had our apartment number correct. After an hour or so, we called to inquire about our food.. a woman apologized and said they had tried to reach us - they had the buzzer number wrong as well. When the food finally arrived, to my dismay the sauteed beans in garlic were obviously canned. $10 FOR CANNED BEANS! I was so upset, because they are usually my favourite and after waiting so long thinking about them, it was very disappointing to receive gelatinous garbage. The war wonton soup we got had a strange aftertaste and very few wontons. I am actually pretty mad about wasting my money.

We eat here regularly, there usually is a lineup on the weekends but you get seated pretty quickly. The fried pork potstickers are really tasty with the sauce, the wonton soup is always steaming hot, the shrimp egg rolls are crunchy and delicious. We usally order chicken black bean sause on crispy chow mein or seafood chow mein but lately we've noticed they don't give you a lot of topping like they give you a total of 4 small shrimp, 3 or 4 pieces of squid and fish, and a few vegetables. We like our chow mein noodles pan fried and crispy like the way they used to do it but for the past few years it seems like Hon's deep fries their noodles and they come out in little tiny pieces instead of whole noodles. The last time we had chow mein, they didn't give us enough gravy and it was really dry and hard to digest. I usually order their sweet and sour pork but the last time it wasn't very crispy because there wasn't enough batter on it and the portions now just didn't seem that big compared to like years ago when the food was piled high on the plates. Its still a good deal though..

Hons Is Mmm Good

Hon's is one of the best Chinese restaurants that I have eaten at. Some of my favorite dishes are: Sweet and Sour Chicken, Curry Beef Brisket & Potato on rice, and the best wonton soup and potstickers in VANCOUVER! Great food, quick and good lunch combos for 6.99 and dinner combos for 4 for only 18.99 with dessert! Just try to beat the lunch and dinner rush.. The waitress always rush you but its worth it.

Hon's has one of the best chiense food you'll ever taste in vancouver at very reasonable price. This place is jam packed during dinner times, which is kind of self explainatory. Although the service isn't so good, it's forgivable since the food is great!
