A Japanese Restaurant run by a pair of Korean brothers.
Tried Hanano after a friend's recommendation. Good location across from the Burquitlam Plaza - lots of parking. The space used to be an Italian restaurant back in the day. Furniture is restaurant neutral - nothing really spectacular. But the food makes up for the ambiance. We ordered a Chicken Yakisoba, Spicy Tuna Roll, Dynamite Roll and the special Beef Tango Roll, which is just Beef, Mango, Tobiko, Cucumber, Tuna on top with Salad Sauce. Freshest sushi rice I've ever tasted. Excellent portions and decent prices - not the most expensive and not the cheapest either. Service was very prompt and friendly. Only gripe would be the loud elevator music on the Friday night we went - I couldn't really hear my hubby across the table let alone the waitress standing next to me taking my order. But a good neighborhood joint to go back to for sure.
After much prompting from the wife, I finally decided to give Hanano Sushi & Grill a try. I've had bad experiences with sushi & grill places before, as there was a tendency to emphasize the grill part more than the sushi. Not here! It's located directly across the street from the Dairy Queen on Clarke Road in Coquitlam.
We went around 5:30pm on a Tuesday evening, and the place was very quiet. As we arrived the waitress chose a nice window seat for us and took our drink orders. She was very polite and efficient.
The place has been renovated quite nicely from it's predecessor. (an Italian restaurant) with touches of Japanese drapings around. The restaurant was very clean, including the bathrooms.
We ordered an Assorted Tempura (2 prawn, 2 carrot, 2 yam, 2 pumpkin, 1 green bean, 1 broccoli), a Roll Combo II (Dynamite roll, California roll, Tuna maki and Salmon maki), a Salmon nigiri, and a Tuna nigiri. Everything was delicious! The tempura batter was light and crispy, the rolls were tightly rolled and well displayed, and the salmon and tuna were very fresh. The sushi sizes were slightly larger than traditional Japanese places, but not monstrous. Also notably they use the more expensive sockeye salmon, which has a very bright red colour to it, unlike most other places which has a pinkish orange colour. The meal ended with complimentary orange slices. After taxes and tip, our bill came out to about $26 and we were stuffed! Prices were quite reasonable, but not the lowest in the area. Fuji Sushi is much more expensive, but Sushi California is a bit cheaper.
We really like Hanano, and will definitely be back again. The food was very good, service was very good, and it's a nice quiet place where you can bring friends to chat and actually hear each other!
I came here with a friend a while ago for a weekend lunch. I had a lunch box with tempura, gyozo and some rolls and a salad. My friend had a salmon don. The food was fine, nothing to complain about, but also nothing memorable. Fish on the salmon don was reasonably fresh and well arranged. Prices seemed in line with other japanese restaurants, and didn't feel overpriced.
Service was minimal but acceptable. There seemed to be only one waitress, and it was pretty busy. We got one tea top up without asking and got the bill in a reasonable amount of time.
Might return if in the area.
We had the chicken teriyaki box and the beef teriyaki box, they came with california roll and sushi, and tempura. First of all the gravy on top of the chicken and beef was way too thick and tasted like gravy made from a package, did not taste Japanese at all but really westernized tasting gravy, something you would find on top of a salsbury steak or something. Definitely not a teriyaki sauce ! the amount of beef and chicken was extremely small compared to other Japanese restaurants. Miso soup was not included. The tuna was NOT fresh and fell apart after one small bite. The salmon, shrimp was ok. Sushi sizes are small and the fish was sliced quite thin. We will not be returning.
Hanano always serves fresh, delicious food. The restaurant has a very pleasant atmosphere and the kitchen staff and employees are always friendly and helpful. The restaurant and facilities are always clean, the service is fast and the prices are good. This is the perfect place to find an oasis during a busy work day, or to enjoy some company over dinner.
We've been going to Hanano for a few months now but our experience last night really has made us consider looking for a new sushi joint. Because we sometimes have to wait a while for our meal, we decided to call our order in early so that we wouldn't have to wait long once we got there especially because we have kids. I made it abundantly clear (or so I thought) on the phone that it was not a take-out order and that we would be eating in the restaurant. Sure enough, when we got there our order was in take out containers and the waitress actually asked us if we wanted to eat out of the take-out containers! Yeah, like that's why I go to a restaurant-to eat out of a container. We also asked to have our 4 year old daughter's roll made smaller so that it would be easier to eat. We've asked them to do this before for us and I don't know why we bothered asking again because they just don't seem to understand. Other restaurants have no problem accomplishing this task and although it seems like a simple request, it's an impossibility for them to do it. Believe it or not, the roll actually seems bigger than the average size roll. The chicken teriyaki we ordered was terribly over salted but the rest of the meal was tasty enough. Go here if you have a simple order but if you require anything remotely special, forget about it, they just don't seem to understand a thing.
I went to this place with my friend yesterday. The first thing I liked was the music they put on, it was calm and not too loud unlike some other places. There were few people in the restaurant eating, good thing it wasn't too crowded. Waitress was nice; gave us a table by the window, took our drinks menu, went over the specials and answered our questions about the menu. I was quite impressed that they serve sockeye salmon, which came in 9 pieces at around $9 something before tax. I asked for waitress’s recommendation as well, she recommended Rose Yaki(scallop wrapped with salmon with onion and tobiko inside it), which was superb! I also ordered Ebi suno, Vege roll, and crunch spicy tuna tempura roll. Ebi suno’s sauce was one of the best I’ve had so far! It wasn't like those cheap sugar vinegary taste, it had richer sour sweet taste that makes you want to have more. Vege roll was very different from other places too, I couldn’t tell some of the veges inside the roll but it was very tasty and fresh. (The waitress explained that two of the veges in the roll was oshinko(pickled radish) and marinated shitake mushroom.) My friend ordered chicken teriyaki meal box, which was quite big portion, it basically came with little bit of everything except sushi or sashimi. Overall, dining in Hanano was very pleasant experience, nice atmospher, delicious food, reasonable price, and good service. If you are looking for a good japanese restaurant in Burquitlam, I'll definetly recommend you to trying Hanano. I know I'll be going back there soon.
My family have been here 4 time now and have not been disappointed. The contemporary suburban decor and eclectic music (we love the classical and jazz music) make for a comfortable dining experience. Service is good and the front counter sushi staff make every effort to greet and thank diners as they leave.
Portions are good and we enjoy the variety and presentation. Rolls are substantial and firmly done, the sauces for gomae and tempura are enhanced and make these dishes special. Miso soup has good depth of flavor. Fresh fruit at the end of the meal is most appreciated.
We have utilized their takeout service and it is as good as eating in. We will be back.
have tried Hanano last tuesday evening. Great and quiet atmostpere attracts me and music was nice. The place was very clean and seats are comfortable. We ordered salmon and tuna sashimi, burning dynamite roll, and beef teriyaki meal box. They have meal box which is like bento in other place. The portion of meal box was great. it includes 5 pcs of tempura, deep fried gyoza, green salad, california roll, beef teriyaki and miso soup. you can try most delicious dishes in hanano by this meal box. Also the burning dynamite roll was amazing. it is that spicy tuna on top of dynamite roll. spicy tuna lovers should try this. Their sashimi was very, very, very fresh. I think that rolls and fish are fresher that other plaices. The price was good and reasonable. The service was very great, too. The waitress was very friendly and polite.
I definitely go back to Hanano soon. I've been Fuji sushi, Sushi California, Akari and other sushi restaurants in Coquitlam but Hanano is the best sushi place.
After opening, we thought to try them as we have only two decent sushi joints in the area, but not totally our favourite. We never liked everything on the menu, just one thing here, one thing there.
We loved everything. They have the best agadeshi tofu that I have ever had, but wish the tempura sauce would come warmed up when they served it. They give huge portions of noodle in their sunomono, their sashimi comes with like 10 pieces instead of 4 or 5, and they have something called the burning dynamite roll, which I've never seen anywhere but it is SO delicious (dynamite with spicy tuna on top)!
They are so friendly and remember their regulars. We often just order take out and bring it home to eat, and know who I am and what we like.
The restaurant itself is a little small, and with windows everywhere it gives a bit of a chill to it. The tables are pretty close together, so if you are looking for somewhere to go for a romantic date this probably isn't it unless it's a quiet time in the restaurant.
