Healthier and tastier alternative

I was just shopping at Kin's Market when I noticed this cute cupcake shop next door. Even though I'm not too fond of extremely sweet icing, I decided to give this place a try. I like to support the smaller, non-corporate guys. What caught my eye was that they claim that they use all natural ingredients.
I bought the double chocolate cupcake for $2. It's chocolate cupcake w/ chocolate icing. Surprisingly, when I took the first bite, I was impressed! It was not as sweet as a thought. It was probably 50% less sweet! The cupcake top was abit crispy/chewy, mmm I love that! The icing was not grainy (like white sugar), it was actually creamy!
Mmmm! I'll definitely buy some more for my love ones!

I don't get how people can have a completely opposite experience from the ones I had - 3 of them. I know, I should have learned the first time. But, I had other people who wanted to try them, only for them to find out what I already told them.

The cupcakes are dry and small. The minicupcakes are the worst. Buying them in the evening is the abosolute worst. I really did not like these at all.

Seriously unless you base your diet on cupcakes who really gives cr@p if they are "healthy" or not? If it's a treat - go for it! Sadly these are not a treat. I do not get this place at all. Thankfully the cupcake craze is coming to an end. They will have to go live somewhere with the former franchisees of the Great Canandian Bagel.

Yesterday I made a box of Betty Crocker cupcakes. I made homemade butter cream for them. They were 1000x better than these cupcakes. I think it's because people use that nasty canned icing all the time now that people think places like these make good cupcakes. It's all in the icing people and this place doesn't put much on and what they do use has a weird texture.

I'm still shakin my head.

I was hoping I'd like them

I really wanted to like these cupcakes. I read the concept and thought great. But, the product has to be more than just a concept.

The cupcakes may be clever but I'm thinking the business plan wasn't. Sadly this place will be gone this time next year. They have a huge space that is mostly empty save for a few tables and chairs. No one was using them. When I went in with my daughter they had only about 6 flavour of regular size and 6 minis. We chose to get 6 minis to try more flavours. Well the minis REALLY are mini. They also were dry, and the entire top was not covered with iicing. The icing was no kind of buttercream I've ever had and strangely spongy or gel like. They white cakes all had a cinnamony or spice flavour background,

Back when "muffins" became popular they quickly transformed to be less and less like muffins and more like cake without icing. Well these "cupcakes" are the exact opposite. They have the texture of an old fashioned muffin that your grandmother would make and I mean not ones for company. It's just dry and muffiny and not cake like at all and then has a centre dollop of the odd icing.

I felt ripped off . If I go to a cupcake place I want a cupcake. I don't want a "healthy" cupcake because that does not taste good. The "introductory" prices might seem low, but the cupcakes are VERY small. they say they have half the sugar of regualr cupcakes. That wouldn't be hard to do as they also have half the cupcake of regular cupcakes.

As you can tell I think I wasted my time. I won't be back. I wonder what store will open in this location next?

One Of The Better CupCake Shops!
By Food4Real of Surrey (23 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, July 10, 2011 - 12:52am [Dine in]

I've been trying all these new cupcake shops popping up everywhere from downtown to White Rock. In most cases they have all been terrible and expensive. Paying over $2 for a cupcake that is dry and has so much icing on top either too sweet or like eating lard is a real put off.

So.. I was happy to report that this joint had the best cupcakes I have tried so far. They are still too expensive but at least these cupcakes were moist and the icing didn't make you gag. The selection could be a bit better, as they were sold out of some of the flavors I wanted to try. Overall it's a nice shop. The owner is nice and the location is easy to get to.

*As a note. One of the cupcake shops I went to downtown that claimed to have the best cupcakes, (also the most expensive) is garbage compared to Clever CupCakes. I wish I remembered the name of that shop but oh well.. I would definitely buy cupcakes from Clever CupCakes again!! It's worth the treat once in a while!

Huge Party Hit!

I just want to say a big THANK YOU!!! You and your wife have done a fantastic thing for the "peanut-free" community. I really appreciate the follow-up and helpfulness that was shown when I ordered last week. The cupcakes were a HUGE hit at our party and EVERYONE asked where they were from because many said "These are the best cupcakes I have ever had!"
The store is very nice with a lot of open space, clean and has a great beat music, price for the cupcakes are perfect compared to other places that their pricing is to excessive.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend your product to anyone!

I am so thrilled to say that lately, I have discovered a “peanut-free” cupcake shops in my area. I am so in love with The Clever Cupcakes. They were so friendly, very helpful, and were able to assure that their products were as safe as could be. They are also made free of artificial flavourings, colours and more. Fantastic!

To anyone in the Coquitlam area, allergic or not please try them out. They are ever so tasty! I ordered a few dozen of their mini-cupcakes for my husbands 30th and they were a real crowd pleaser.

Ever since I saw the cupcake store opened, I wanted to try it, I read an article in the local paper that they use natural ingredients and are healthier. Half the sugar used to make the cupcakes. I eventually went in and got half a dozen. Mango and orange flavor? Anyway, they taste great! Love the icing. Not too sweet, just how I like it.

Best Cupcake in the Tri-Cities

We first tried them out at the Canada Day celebration at Lafarge Park. Since then we have not been able to stop going. My kids love them. Quality and taste are incredible as well as the presentation. Their double chocolate is especially tempting, and I feel guilty every time I have one even though it's supposed to be a healthy version. You can see them being baked in the back as opposed to being trucked in like other places. I've heard a couple of people in the store complain about the price. Really!!?? Do you people realize that all the other cupcake stores charge more than 4 dollars for a large cupcake? That's twice as much as Clever Cupcakes charges with half of the love handles. I'll make this a regular stop for a long time.

Great place to get your cupcakes fix

I am a huge cupcake lover. I have been to Big City Cupcakes, the Orginal Cupcakes place and now Clever Cupcakes. I have to say Clever Cupcakes is my favourite thus far. The cupcakes at Clever Cupcakes taste just like home made cupcakes maybe even better! Yes they taste a bit more healthy and that is why they do tend to taste on the drier side but when eaten with the icing I think the combination is great! They don't taste artificial at all, I love the cream cheese icing, it tasts homemade and not too dense like some other places. I always get the coconut and lemon cupcakes with cream cheese icing, they are my favourite. I have yet to try their berry velvet cupcake with cream cheese icing. It wasn't available the last time I was in, looking forward to trying that one!

Just Another Cupcake
By pocololo of P.Coquitlam (1 Review)
Submitted Monday, June 28, 2010 - 5:27pm [Dine in]

I went in recently and bought a selection of large and mini cupcakes. The large cupcakes are $2 each and the minis are $1 per piece. There are deals if you want half doz. or a full doz, like most places. Although there were some interesting flavours, I was really disappointed with the cupcakes. They were very dry, especially the mini cupcakes. The icing was an odd texture, almost gel-like for some of the flavours rather than cream-based. The service was really good, but service alone is not enough for me to be a repeat customer.
