It would be too easy for me to make a bet as to when this place will close down. It's not a matter of if, just when and I'm guessing sooner rather than later.
Back in the day - or at least 10 years ago this place was always busy, had pretty good food and was a nice place to go. Yesterday I walked in on a Sunday morning for the first time in years to find exactly 5 customers. Now, you would expect that a Sunday morning would bring in people to linger over coffee, relax and chat. Not at this industrial nightmare.
I went to the counter and looked at all their items set out in the display case and it reminded me of a vending machine. The items were $6 or $7 and up and all looked factory made. I did notice that alot of the items like salads that used to be in large colourful bowls with serving spoons were now in small tupperware like conatainers with plastic wrap on them. I guess so they can quickly put it away at night after no one orders it.
I waited almost 5 mintues to have my order taken as the dude was busy opertaing the panini press and other complex tasks, but I'm not sure who the food was for as the other customers were getting ready to leave. Finally I ordered a breakfast wrap. It was removed from the vending case and rapidly nuked. I ordered a regular coffee too. The wrap was ice cold in the middle and consisted of a few tablespoons of scrambled egg, a few teaspoons of frozen hashbrowns (like from the gocery store - even had those few little black pieces in there that I always remove, a tablespoon of preshredded cheese wrapped up in a small white tortilla. Ingredient cost maybe $0.50 - Bread Garden price &4.25. It was served with a couple of tablespoons of jarred salsa in a platic cup with the plastic lid still on. I used to have these along time ago and they had fresh potatoes and were hot and oozing with cheese. This was a disaster and was absolutely tasteless. I was going to wash it down with the coffee but after my first taste realized they had made a mistake and filled my cup with floor sanitizer or perhaps it was water left in the cup from the dishwasher. Either way it wasn't coffee.. You would think a bakery/cafe could make a decent cup of coffee. NOt even decent, at least drinkable- this was not. I went to the counter to find out if this was the way it was supposed to be or see if I could get some other coffee. I waited again over five minutes while 2 of the 3 employees stood at the prep counter "prepping??" with their back to me. In 5 minutes they never turned around to see if there were any customers. I was now outnumbered by employees 3 to 1 and could still not get any help, on a Sunday morning nearing noon in a busy shopping mall. I think that says it all. I left the full cup on the counter and walked out. They never even turned around to wave good bye. I will never walk into that mess again.
The food here, as at all Bread Gardens, is way too pricey, not fresh and not that tasty either. It all looks good in the glass cases but that's about all. I wonder how long it sits there sometimes, uncovered, drying out in the fridge before someone orders it. Their pastries are definitely a better bet than the savory food. Even if nothing else, it's worth it to get a cinnamon knot here.
The service I've had here is either so-so or simply bad. I came in to look at their travel mugs for gifts and was treated so poorly because I didn't order anything and I only wanted to look at the mugs.
