Ate here two or three times, always more than enough food for the price, always left full. Have done their takeout, which the menu does not seem to be available online sadly. Most entre's under 13 dollars, and take out most things are $11.
But the main thing is the tastes in the food. Excellent flavourful, ingredient filled curries. Truly excelling in quality, with little details such as cilantro on the masla potatoes (melt in your mouth). I have had delicious lamb, beef kebabs that tasted as if slow roasted on a spit all day, juicy and filling. Lentil soup, complimentary delicious chip things, the list goes on. They have an interesting take on channa, if you are used to the east indian versions. It was quite unique. It reminds me of Ethiopian food, albeit more approachable. Most dishes served with rice and naan.
As for the restaurant, its quite elegant inside with a bar and lots of banquet tables. They have a small patio but as it under-looks canada way, its pretty crappy. We drove by this place many times, before deciding to go in, and now we have been back a few times. I really just thought it was some sort of diner, not at all flavourful indianesque cuisine. It has been packed as well as empty, so you might want to call ahead. Remember to take a take out menu for your next visit. You will go back. Especially if you live in the neighbourhood. Reminds me of a fusion place as well. An undiscovered gem :) 4 stars
I would not recommend this establishment to anyone. Coffee was mediocre at best. The staff were more interested in their personal "texting" devices then taking my order. Too many students with laptops no where to sit. I had to take my order to go. Move on ...
My wife and I had dinner here on a Friday night. Food was average and service was below average. Not once did the server came by and refill our water. With many Italian restaurants in the city, I won't waste my time and money coming back to this place again.
I was excited to be going to Shanghai Elan. I'd heard that they had the best Chinese donuts in Vancouver, and I know they're greasy and not good for you, but I love them so much. At Congee Noodle King they are wonderful, so when my friend said that at Shanghai Elan they're even better, I was skeptical but psyched. No, no, noooooo! They were out of Chinese donuts. My friend said that's OK, try the smoked fish appetizer. She loves it. Her friends love it. Yes, they were out of that too. But I was in a great mood because I had fallen in love with the server, and when you're in love it's all good. My friend and I shared a whole sweet and sour rock cod, which was fresh and daring in its sweetness. The sauce on its own was too sweet, but matched with the fish the combo took fish and sauce to a higher level, something I would not have thought possible because the sauce was so sweet. Brilliant. Daikon pastries - good, but daikon could have had more flavour. Leek turnovers with egg - delicious.
Soymilk soup - served not hot enough, and not much more than soymilk, the kind you drink in a cup. But obviously fresh and high-quality. Still, wouldn't order it again. Colourful menu, great location...overall, we enjoyed ourselves, but there were disappointments.
Perhaps it was a busy night but the service was extremely poor. Our appetizer AND dessert were forgotton; we had to ask for our menu; we had to ask for our bill; and no one checked on how we were enjoying our meal. We were there for 2 hours! And, apart from a lame apology, there was nothing offered to make it better i.e. to comp one of our drinks etc.
Hi everyone... I and my two sons ate here today and had the worst food that a greek
restaurant serves... This restaurant is in the Entertainment book coupon so its two for one and that may explain why the food we selected on the menu was terrible...
first the calmari and greek salad was satisfactory but when we order our favourite greek lamb kleftico (which is the shoulder lamb) to our dismay its was a dish with scraps of lamb meat , pile of rice and half of a potato... We have been to many many Greek restaurants in the Vancouver area and always order the Kleftico which is a large roasted lamb shoulder with all the trimmings bones etc.. and very juicy BUT
at this restaurant the dish as noted had dried lamb mashed meat scraps with rice and one small potatoe...I can assure you that we did went to this restaurant before and had the juicy bone large shoulder lamb...so I think this restaurant is cutting corners and serving poor unappetizing kleftico as note here...scraps of mashed meat...
When I ask the waitress whats this and where is the juice shoulder lamb with the bones she said that the meat falls off the bones and they dish it out... I say that portion control and dries out the meat....
I will not recommend this restaurant and certainly for 17.00 a plate of lamb scraps on rice is not what I envision of a Kleftico shoulder of lamb....
There are other greek restaurants in town that served the traditional lamb Kleftico...
The lamb scraps on the dish were so unappetizing and dried up I just told them to box it and take it home ....did not enjoy eating here
They are always always always busy so I always have to wait forever ...after eating there couple times .I learn one thing that is ....go around 4 pm then it will save you a lot of times.
I always order the sushi sasumi combo. there sushi and sasumi is always fresh and big !! They don't have super tasty rolls but they are cheap and filling ^^.
Overall, if you want to have a good value fresh sushi, this place is a very good choise !
The servers are just too busy to give you 5 stars service, come on !! They are human too !! give them a break !!
We have been to this location a few times lately. The wait between 6 - 7pm varies from 5 - 20 minutes on the weekend. Service in general is good unless you pick the few servers who are usually grouchy. The food comes very fast and sashimi is fresh. They have a lot of selection in the menu. Maki rolls with mango or papaya taste refreshing. I also recommend their seafood salad.
They don't take reservation and you won't be seated until your entire table has arrived. There are very limited parking spots outside the restaurant but rooftop parking is plenty.
We like this place a lot, always yummy and great service. Take out or dine in, its always a good time here! Waitress/hostess are always pleasant to talk to! I love the veggie sushi combo and the yam tempura appetizer. The chicken katsu and the beef teriyaki are great dishes!
Now I have to say, I never ever wanted to write a review of XSite because I dont want to get the word out there. The place is so great and its only getting busier which means line ups and that sucks for me! We come here often for dinner or lunch and the food is always great. We have never had a bad experience and we have never had a bad meal. Not fancy but good quality food and not many deep fried items. I would not recommend the pastas as much because the other items are delicious. And I think the sauces are made in-house. The restaurant is a staple, I could eat here every week if I didn't like to make my own food. It is such good value for the food. I love the boiled potatoes and green salad with vinegar dressing with all burgers/sandwiches. It makes the meal feel healthier with no fries. And the salads, hand ripped lettuce no packaged lettuce here and delicious dressings.
I wrote this review in response to the review below about it being cheap. Sure the place is not 5 star gourmet food with fancy decor but they have good food and do it well. The servers can appear distant and unfriendly but many are family or friends of the owner. And some work ALL day so forgive them if they are not overly friendly at the end of their long day.
Awful food and appalling service. I have never felt that I have wasted money when trying new restaurants, until I visited this "restaurant". The walls were covered in spider webs, very unappetizing. The older waitress who served us was rude and abrupt. She had absolutely no idea of how to be polite or accommodating. After a long wait, the food was beyond disappointing. Not worth a penny coming here.
I've always wanted to try this place out as it has decent reviews. Luckily, a groupon was advertised recently so I decided to purchase one. The groupon for two was sold out but the one for four was available so I decided to buy that one thinking they would be nice enough to honor it for my girlfriend and I. The appetizers came in about 15 minutes (it was soup and salad...)The food was ordered at 7:00pm, the main entrees did not arrive until 8:00pm. I inquired with the senior level waitress if she could check on our food, and she said that the kitchen was busy and was backed up. To me, that is an unacceptable reason. If she had offered to double check my inquiry and get it out asap that would have been an acceptable gesture, but instead she made excuses. The food was bland and soggy upon arrival. The chicken was overcooked and the veggies burnt and soggy.
Upon departure, I went up to settle the bill. I showed her the groupon and she redeemed it and credited only the paid amount not the promotional value. I asked her why wasn't the full promotional amount credited. She said that there were only two of you and not four. I did not even bother arguing with her given the that fact she should have mentioned and offered to me whether or not I would like to redeem it since she can only offer the paid value. But she didn't. The best $80 dinner I've spent. I guess finding the groupon wasn't such a fortunate event after all. I will never return to this place.
I've eaten lunch here twice and each time I was happy with the food. Once a soup dish and once a chicken, rice, green curry dish. Everything was tasty and fresh, the prices are good as well. The service is very basic, what would you like? Here you go. That's about it.. I will be back for lunch as it's close by, the prices are good and so is the food.
I'm guessing this is a family-owned/operated place so it has a nice feel to it. My better-half had been here before so she brought me to check it out. We ordered beef carpaccio, deep-fried rolls, chicken & fried egg on rice. They were all good. The place is clean and nicely decorated. A/c is nice too. I'll be back to try the Pho although there's a few other places along the Height's strip that serves it.
Dropped in for the first time and the place was packed and busy with many takeout orders. The décor is dark and cool and the service friendly and fast. The food was fresh and good considering we're in the suburbs here and usually that's tough to find. I'll still go to Kilala on East Hastings as my first choice for authentic sushi but in a pinch, I'll return to Gaya. Plus Gaya has hot food and a liquor licence too.
After Bombay Beat closed I needed to find a new indian place. I have dined at this restaurant probably around 6-8 times and I have never had a disapointing meal!
I usually get a vegetarian dish and my boyfriend will get a dish with meat. The vegetable korma and jalfrezie are soooo good. We really like the samosas or pakoras to start! For the main dish they give a big portion size so you will likely have some left overs for the next day.
I have never been to the buffet, just for a regular sit down dinner. The owner and server seem very nice and the service is always good. The restaurant is clean but it doesn't have much decor going on inside. It can be empty sometimes which made us nervous upon our first visit, but the food is great and is worth the visit!
Great meal very enjoyable in the patio. We had a minestrone $4, Scalopine Al Marsala $22, Linguine Pescatore $17. Served with a generous amount of piping hot bread. All dishes were delicious. The veal scalopine came with the best variety of veggies I have ever been served. Roasted potato, portobello mushroom, green beans, red pepper, cauliflower, broccoli, and carrot. Impressive. Service by Carmen was excellent, right on top of things but not intrusive. The only drawback was the chairs used in the patio. They were the kind you buy for yourself and leave in the yard year round and don't care if someone steals them. Lots of street parking available plus a free public parking lot in the rear.
I go here a lot for coffee and breakfast items. I have also had very nice sandwiches at lunch time. I have always found the staff to be nice and the food good for the price. I have never had stale bread. Perhaps trying something is better for a review than heresay.
One thing I do keep in mind it that I'm not eating at restaurant. It's a cafe that serves other foods in an industrial park for the convenince of local workers. No one goes there as a destination. Therefore I would not expect a lunch salad to have freshly grated parmesan or anything else you'd find a destination restaurant. The price refelcts that though. Also if I suspected I didn't get what I wanted, i.e. turkey for chicken I'd ask them about it not just complain on a website.
Anywho I like elements and will continue to go.
I love chicken caesar salads, I didn't think it was possible to screw one up. I have eaten a lot of chicken in my day. I have also eaten a lot of turkey in my day. Let me tell you, their chicken caesar salad is actually a turkey caesar salad. Unless they have someone magically been able to make chicken taste like turkey (and true poultry lovers know there is a very different taste between chicken and turkey). But that is not the only sin of this "chicken" caesar salad. They use Kraft grated parmesan cheese (you know, the stuff in the green (or white) container with the red lid). Everyone knows you are supposed to use shredded parmesan on a caesar salad. They use processed bacon bits (bacon isn't even part of a traditional caesar salad). And they couldn't even be bothered to toss the salad so that the dressing coated everything, not just a little drizzle on the top.
I thought a salad would be safe because they have to be made from scratch, but I was wrong (I have heard from others in the area who have visited that the bread for the sandwiches always tastes stale).
Had a great anniversary dinner here on Thursday Night. Great meal . there was only one waiter there who served as the host and bartender. It wasn't that crowded but it did take awhile to order etc. I had the tomato salad for my starter and my husband had the a soup with a poached salmon. We enjoyed these. For entrees I had the tenderloin of beef and it was cooked perfectly and very tender. We didn't have dessert but they did have some very tempting dishes on the menu. If you want an excellent meal and have lots of time this is an great dining option.
