Sushi Oyama5152 Kingsway, Burnaby
Sloppy food and service

Sushi Oyama used to be my favorite places in Metrotown to eat sushi. Its unique location is what draws a lot of people to it; it is located in a heritage building, to put it nicely (it was actually a funeral home. Their vegas roll is a winner, and so is their red roll and spicy salmon sashimi. When I visited again though, I realized that things have changed and not for the better. The sushi is made rather sloppily and carelessly. It’s as if the management does not care anymore. The service has also taken a turn on for the worst. The waitress takes forever to acknowledge you and bring you your stuff. My food was brought almost instantly but I had no cutlery for about 10 minutes...

Went to this place three times for their buffet. The result is they are very good during lunch time and not good for dinner. The reason being during lunch buffet the food are freshly cooked. The meat are juicy and the veggies are crunchy. Dinner time comes around and you will see food that has been reheated and sat in oil. Pretty gross actually.

So if you want to go for lunch, i highly recommend it. The food is delicious. If you are going for dinner i suggest you skip the buffet and get their regular menu items.

Hare Krishna Temple has a small café hidden in a residential neighborhood of south Burnaby, Outdoor garden is peaceful and beautiful with plenty of parking space. Govinda is more like a friendly home instead of a restaurant. It is opened daily to the public during 12:30 to 14:30pm and offers a vegetarian buffet of sanctified food for body and soul. All-you-can-eat lunch menu changes often but consists of limited selection of rice, veggies, bread, curry, salad, pudding, fruits and juice. Overall, food is fresh, delicious, flavorful, nutritious and cheap. Suggested cash donation of $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for children and free for babies. Very good deal indeed.

Very bad service today. I had asked for a Yogurt-Flavored Black Tea, and picked up another drink for my friend. When I came to pick it up, I noticed my drink looked exactly like a black tea, without a hint of yogurt in it. I walked away, thinking perhaps it doesn't look like yogurt, but had yogurt flavoring added into it. After taking a sip, I confirmed it was just Black Tea. I debated whether to complain or not to my friend, and decided to. When I came back to the stand, the lady who worked there (a mid-aged asian lady), gave me a feeling that she wasn't going to be pleased. The conversation went like this:

me: Hi, is this yogurt black tea?
lady: NO, you asked for Black Tea ONLY.
me: Uh...no, i didn't. i asked for yogurt black tea.
lady: NO, YOU ASKED FOR BLACK TEA.
me: *stares as her in disbelief* Uhh...NO, I didn't. I specifically squinted for the yogurt word. I said YOGURT (in Chinese) Black Tea.
lady: NO, you said BLACK TEA. I asked if you wanted Black or Green tea. Usually people get Green tea with yogurt.
me: *gives up*

Very bad service. She is basically insinuating that I was trying to get a free drink, or did not like the Black Tea so tried to change it for free. She glared at me as soon as I approached the stand. Also, I did not like how she told me what I ordered, when I know what I said.

Will NEVER, EVER go to this place again.

Good food, great prices, mean service

We were first acknowledged (barely) at the door shown to our seats our menus were thrown on the table and she was gone, no discussion, no hi how are ya, nothing. Then we get asked if we wanted a drink while the waitress stared at her feet looking annoyed that she had to serve people. Same as it came to ordering our meal. Food came in good time and for the price you are getting a full plate of good tasting food. As we wait for our server to come back to clear the plates and get our bill, we see her sitting with other patrons or at the bar, even at another table playing with a young lady's hair!?! A little wrong in a restaurant. There was not much happiness eluding from any of the staff there. We all agreed we will be back for the food and the rates but service was lacking. I think a visit from Jon Taffer could complete this grill/bistro.

Came here with a friend who lives in Vancouver and is a regular at this place. The first thing I noticed was how clean and well kept the sushi place was. Even the bathrooms were impeccable.

I ordered the tuna tataki and firecracker roll. The sushi here is fresh and tastes amazing. Yes, it is kind of expensive, but “you get what you pay for”. I guess my expectations for this place were exceeded, which is usually not the case. I would come back for more rolls. The service was quick (for us), our food came in under 15 minutes of ordering it. I am a rather impatient person so for me this was a plus.

I had dinner here tonight and ordered the chicken karaage, assorted tempura, a few rolls and the chicken teriyaki. Chicken karaage was a generous portion, and pretty good, but the pieces were too huge. Karaage is typically more bite sized. Assorted tempura came with 3 pieces of shrimp and a few pieces of vegetables, I would say they are slightly above average. The rolls I had were decent, and the chicken teriyaki was disappointing. It looked nice, but it had some bland bean sprouts and onions underneath. I found a few hard inedible bits in my chicken, and the taste was not great for me.

Service was hit and miss. Once we ordered the food came very fast. But unless it is self seating and there was no sign or I missed it, it took several minutes to get the waitress's attention to get a table. There were several open tables that were clean and without a reserve sign during this time. We were immediately given menus and left alone for several more minutes, with the waitress looking busy in the back. We saw her again when she dropped off glasses of water (we were not asked if we wanted tea or something else) and left quickly before we could order. Once we managed to wave her down to order, the food came blazingly fast. We didn't see our waitress again even with our empty cups of water, so we decided to pay at the front.

So we decided to go to Uncle Willy's on Monday afternoon for the lunch buffet, you pay the hostess, she gives you a slip and then you may enter. What a great experience! So many Vegan/Vegetarian Options. I was impressed by the amount of vegan/vegetarian fare! I immediately loaded my plate with garden salad, cheese n potato perogies with sour cream, macaroni n cheese, vegetarian chow mean, yummy fries that tasted just like triple Os, potato salad. The pop and coffee are included too, refillable pop is always a bonus. They had a huge selection of desserts: jello, granola, cake, apple cobbler and pineapple cake. My date decided to indulge on the meat lasagna, fried chicken, sweet corn, mashed potatoes, veal and roast beef. We had a great time, finished the meal with ice cream which we helped ourselves to from the soft serve ice cream machine and loaded it with caramel and chocolate sauce. Uncle Willy''s is a great place for those who appreciate decent food and enjoy the little things in life.We will be back!

Mediocre At Best

The Thai Cafe was recently named "Best Thai In Burnaby" by the Burnaby Now so we decided to check it out for the first time. Major disappointment :( I am not a Thai food aficionado by any means, but I have traveled to Thailand and tasted the food. Considering most newbies to this cuisine would immediately go for the Pad Thai you would think this would be a signature dish and a safe bet. The noodles (although dry) tasted incredibly oily (soaked in/coated) to the point where I couldn't finish my meal and it gave me a sore stomach. We ordered the prawn Pad Thai and the dish came with 4 measly prawns. Considering you pay more for the prawns you would expect are least 6.
The yellow chicken curry was quite thin and average and certainly didn't leave you wanting more. The spring rolls also again tasted like they were soaked in oil. I had had high hopes for fresh tasting food with hints of lime that wouldn't be heavy on the stomach, but it didn't suffice.

Needless to say, after only one try we probably won't be back. From other reviews it seems that the quality of the food has gone down as of late. I am sorry to have missed it.

The staff at the Brentwood location are the rudest and have the worst customer service ever! Used to order take-out here regularly until they started consistently messing up my order and not even apologizing for it. Started going to the Kingsway location but wifey accidentally called the wrong restaurant this weekend. Nothing has changed and I will never go back ever again. Yes, they are super busy and probably don't care about losing a patron but seriously these people are way too high on themselves. Don't take my money and then yell at me to wait and order me to get out of your face and stand somewhere else. You could have just let me know my order wasn't ready yet even though I came later than I was told. And don't cuss me out in Korean and expect me not to understand you're bad mouthing me. What goes around comes around and I hope karma bites you in the a**!

Went here to order some bubble tea to go and use a coupon that stated buy one get another free from the Entertainment book. Apparentlty there was a typo and you have to ordered a "Black Bubble Tea" and get any other bubble tea free. Yet the prices are all the same and they insisted that it has to be Black Bubble Tea. and unfortunately I was wanting to try the Mocha bubble tea. We ended ordering the Taro and the Honey Milk Black Tea which tasted good but the Taro was so much better. When we were near the last 1/4 of the Taro I noticed that it started to taste weird and gritty. I figure that they did not mixed it enough to have the same consistency throughout the drink. Overall I enjoyed my bubble tea but would venture to other Big Orange to get my bubble tea fix.

Went here with the family and ordered 3 dishes. I was impressed from the size and the taste was decent. Far from the best but decent for what it is. The ingredients could have been better but for the amount you get, something has to suffer. The flavour from my dish New Orlean was oily and tasted ok, but my wife's dish was chicken and mushroom with dill cream sauce tasted far better. The kids 3 cheese alfredo was satisfactory. I would not rush back but if I was ever starving and craving pasta, then I would give this restaurant a go again.

Had lunch the other day and ordered the chicken rice, medium hot. It took a long time to get the order and when I did it had no heat at all to it. I found maybe three little pieces of chicken in the rice which was disappointing. When I paid for my lunch the first transaction was cancelled by the person using the machine and I only noticed afterwards when checking my bank account that when they ran the transaction through again they charged an additional 49 cents?? It's not the most expensive food around (which I can see why now) but why charge me the additional 49 cents the second time around?

There are lots of thai restaurants around so I suggest that if you want good service and quality food you go elsewhere.

I didn't realize what happened until after it went thru when i looked at the bill. Nothing has changed, and that's a very good thing.

Submitted Saturday, May 24, 2014 - 9:24am [Dine in]

Having been a regular customer back in the '80s at the Paul's Café (as it was then known) on 45th and Fraser in Vancouver I was disappointed that it was no longer there. But prior to visiting Vancouver for the first time in years after moving east a face-booked friends in that city, one of whom informed me that the restaurant now operated out of Burnaby on Imperial at Gray St.

I checked it out the first day in town and was not disappointed! The menu has not been tampered with in any way, and the sub I ordered (Paul's Special) was exactly as I remembered.

In the following days I dragged some other ex-customers to the place, and now that they know where to go they'll certainly be back. Also tried their breakfast menu and once again nothing had changed - still heaping quantities of the very best you'll find anywhere.

For those who've never been to Paul's I can only say this: Once you've tried their subs you'll only have two questions: 1) Who are Subway and Quizno's? and 2) Who cares?

Saturday Evening Experience

I ended up taking the gf here and we had a coupon for 50% the 2nd entrée. Upon entering, the place is clean, tidy w/well spaced tables for privacy. Most importantly, it was quiet inside.

The waitresses were attentive as we had our water refilled often. We had very fresh and delicious bread to start out with. Upon putting in our order for the beef and shish kabob souvlaki, I noticed a tad bit longer than usual to get our food - about 15 minutes. When it came, the food looked fresh.

However, the Tzatzhi sauce was not used to what I am getting at other restaurants. The texture was different and it had less taste. Perhaps it was healthier with this version? Also, the meat in both of our dishes was not as delicious and tender as other greek restaurants.

Overall I am not complaining as it was a fine meal.

Oh, washrooms were clean too. Not as one point did I cringe like how I do when I enter a Chinese restaurant.

Hakkaku Ramen4530 E Hastings Street, Burnaby
Best ramen I've had so far
By cvpro of Burnaby (9 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, May 16, 2014 - 9:33pm [Dine in]

This place is a serious challenge to the popular ramen restaurants by Denman and Robson in Vancouver.

I've been going here since it first opened. At the time, there were few customers and I was afraid it would eventually close down. 6 months later, customers started coming in and now the place is thriving - thank goodness because I hate having to drive downtown for a bowl of ramen.

First thing I have to say is that this place is CLEAN! We have a toddler and almost everyplace we go to - the restaurant baby high chair is filthy. Here it is spotlessly clean! This is a first good sign.

The menu is fairly simple and the prices are very good though they have recently changed the menu and I'm told some prices have changed but I haven't noticed the change. I normally order the vegetable shio ramen with extra cha-siu topping. I like this combo because the bowl comes loaded with a nice variety of vegetables (got to get my fibre) while the cha-siu topping keeps my carnivore cravings satisfied. The soup is very nice and not as salty as what I would find at Kintaro.

Service is very expedient and friendly though sometimes the server(s) get overwhelmed when the place if full. Usually there is only one server working there.

One time, my wife had a little bit of ramen left over and asked for it to be packed up. By mistake the server discarded it and the manager offered to take the entire amount off of our bill. This type of service would be unheard of in many other restaurants of this type.

This place deserves your business. Go there and try it out!

Nice and comfy inside. Great lighting and wall decor. Less than average rating for BBTEA.

Submitted Monday, May 12, 2014 - 11:51am [Dine in]

My two buddies and I came here on a Sunday night for some takeout bbtea.

It looks great inside! Clean, quiet and great use of mood lighting. The waiter also was attentive to us. The menu sported a big selection of drinks. Our bbtea was made quickly but the guy gave it to us with the straws not having wrapping on them (eww).

After we got home and started on the drinks, I found my Taro bbtea to be full of ice and lacking in flavor. My buddies mentioned the same thing. For $4.50 per drink, this is a little on the expensive side. I will not be coming back for drinks. Perhaps I will try the food here next time and do a follow-up review.
