Mrs. C and I were in Zelco for no apparent reason when she suggested we try the "family diner" located on the main level. The place looks like a sort of 80's concept of a diner in hell, with bowling pins and hula hoops nailed to the walls (and incongruously, a sled), a black and white paint scheme, and electric teal vinyl upholstery on the benches and chair cushions. It was reasonably clean, which was more than I could say for my fellow diners. Our server seemed friendly enough, but I could see she also considered herself one of the damned.
We decided on an order each the special crab cake eggs Benedict, which was a crab cake with yellow sauce on it and a runny poached egg on top. It came with fried potatoes and a cup of fruit. The crab cake was sort of pasty, and had no discernible flavor. The egg was mostly raw, and the fruit looked rather gray around the edges. The potatoes were alright. Luckily, the special was an ultra-small portion size, so we didn't have to force much down. As for price, it was a bit of a rip-off for what we got.
We will never return.
Don't expect to go into the Zellers diner and have a culinary experience, okay? Don't order eggs benny at a place unless it's "famous" for it's bennies. That would be like ordering sushi at McDonald's or something. We went in for a quick breakfast while shopping for bargains at the old "Zed" and we found the service and food to be just what we were looking for. Good. Basic. Classic. Actually, I was surprised that they had a whole-grain pancake option, which I like for my young daughter, but no one else has. Our server was really friendly, actually, and we tipped more than we usually would in a place like that. Anyway, if you want to set the bar high, go somewhere else and eat. If you're looking for a family standard, the Z Restaurant is a good option.
I had to run in and get some things at Zellers Brentwood the other morning and thought I'd try the breakfast special (2 eggs, choice of ham, sausage or bacon, hash browns, toast and refillable coffee) for $4.99. Wasn't expecting much, however was pleasantly surprised!
Eggs were cooked to perfection (soft poached - and I'm picky), sliced potato nice an crispy-brown, 3 generous portions of ham nicely done and whole grain bread which was of very good quality. Coffee wasn't gourmet, but certainly good enough to wash down breakfast.
Service was prompt and what I expect from the best breakfast joint - extremely efficient and unobtrusive (plus I got called 'honey' and 'sweetheart' lots).
It will be some time before I would venture to order crab eggs benedict at this place (like who does that? 'duh'), but after experiencing a well prepared, unpretentious breakfast, I look forward to trying a grilled chesse for lunch or maybe some mashed potato with cutlets and gravy kind of meal Mmmmmmmmm. I'll bet it will be solid - and definitely under 10 bucks.
Atmosphere is a bit bright for my taste (nowhere to really hide head down and read the paper), however adequately clean (no sticky ketchup bottles), with banquette seating plus they have a stack of newspapers that you can help yourself to.
