A low-priced, cactus club like restaurant located in North Burnaby.
Now I have to say, I never ever wanted to write a review of XSite because I dont want to get the word out there. The place is so great and its only getting busier which means line ups and that sucks for me! We come here often for dinner or lunch and the food is always great. We have never had a bad experience and we have never had a bad meal. Not fancy but good quality food and not many deep fried items. I would not recommend the pastas as much because the other items are delicious. And I think the sauces are made in-house. The restaurant is a staple, I could eat here every week if I didn't like to make my own food. It is such good value for the food. I love the boiled potatoes and green salad with vinegar dressing with all burgers/sandwiches. It makes the meal feel healthier with no fries. And the salads, hand ripped lettuce no packaged lettuce here and delicious dressings.
I wrote this review in response to the review below about it being cheap. Sure the place is not 5 star gourmet food with fancy decor but they have good food and do it well. The servers can appear distant and unfriendly but many are family or friends of the owner. And some work ALL day so forgive them if they are not overly friendly at the end of their long day.
As a fourth-year university student (and an unemployed one at that), I perhaps appreciate the value of a dollar more than many others. This restaurant reminds me that there are establishments out there that do not seek to eviscerate one's wallet whenever possible.
The food is copious - well-roasted and flavourful potatoes (how did someone find these dull?) are always on the side, with a salad. Fresh burgers, steaks, appetizers, and large dinner-size salads abound, all grilled up quite quickly in plain view. To those that complain about no fries - your waist-line probably with thank you later, and these potatoes they serve make a nice change from the regular "do you want fries with that" restaurant.
Atmosphere is excellent - art-deco metal wall-sculptures, brass-topped tables, and a dark and relaxing atmosphere - the best kind of ambience after a long day of staring at textbooks. Servers are friendy, and reasonably attendant, but there are usually very few, meaning that if the tables are fairly full, you may end up waiting quite awhile to be waited upon.
Last, but certainly not least, the price; wow. This is the best food for this kind of pricing (everything under 10$) that I have ever heard of - most others seem to agree on this too. If you're paying under ten dollars for a generous portion of steak, potatoes, and salad - BE THANKFUL! I cannot think of another restaurant that serves this quality/quantity of food for such a reasonable price.
I heartily recommend this place to my fellow students, or anyone who wants a casual dining experience that is a unique amalgamation of value and quality. Don't expect the world, but do expect a good time.
we're regulars here b/c:
- hamburgers are outstanding - cheese burger is a $4.95 special
- cajun chicken burger is excellent
they're so good, we have trouble trying other entrees!
wait staff is always friendly and accomodating
My boyfriend was told about this place at work. We went there earlier today with his mother. Although it's a touch dark and noisy, the place is awesome. Not small, extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff, open kitchen.. felt quite comfortable and clean.
Portions are generous and a good selection on the menu. The value is ridiculous, I didn't expect much when I saw the price but I was pleasantly surprised!
We had steak and it was done right (we asked for med-rare). The clam-chowder was large (shared one between 2 people) and tasted nice. And we had the chicken soulvaki which was tasty and moist.
The coffee was just okay. But we didn't care.
Definitely we are coming back.
I heard about X-Site Grill and Bistro from a friend, so I went to check the place out. I arrived just after 5: 00 pm. When I walked in and sat down. It was clean, and the menu had lots to choose from, how ever I chose a cheese burger. It arrived at my table in less then 10 minutes, and was great. This Bistro has a good full menu, with dinner specials, and also a family type atmosphere with many repeat ( regular ) customers. Good prices, and good value,,,, I will be back soon to experience another food item,,,,, reviewed by, Allan Cassidy.
As long-time Xcite patrons, we've been eating here for well over 10 years. The beauty for X-Site is the mix of patrons you'll see on any given night. From SFU students, families and seniors, everyone knows they're getting a fantastically priced, solid meal. X-Site has only managed to overcook my burger once in a 10 year span. Otherwise the food is bang-on, exactly what you're expecting time and time again. As regulars, we appreciate the small things, like when the waitress automatically brings us the hot sauce, and knows I prefer my shrimp club to be a single-decker (rather than a double). I hope they remain here until I'm old and grey!
I come here when I'm really hungry with a couple of friends and most of the time I'm not disappointed.
Food: Lunch specials are very good. I enjoy their chicken tztaki (it's not as good as Cristos Taverna's across the street but it's worth it for what you pay!) and their burgers are also pretty good. One of the clubs they serve (it has a ton of shrimp in it) are DEEEEEEELICIOUS! Drinks are more on the alcohol side; they're one of the few places I know that still serve RC Cola and ROYAL Orange Soda.
Service: The server that's usually there is pretty nice, but sometimes I've caught her watching sports games or news shows in the bar area while I've been trying to wave her down for our bill. Other than that, everything's alright.
Value: Good value majority of the time. I always leave there spending less than $11.00. (Couple of drinks & a meal, or when I cover mine and my friend's meals.)
Ambiance: It's pretty dark in there, but it's a bar and grill. Decor isn't anything special - it's not like it's a high-end/upscale bistro.
Overall: Good for happy hour, good place to go to with coworkers and friends. Not really for a sweet sixteen or huge party or anything like that. (Unless it's a drinking party, which I've seen tons of in here. But at least their customers are having fun?) It's nice for an afternoon lunch....and I'll leave it at that.
I live in this Burnaby most of my life and been here quite a few times. I went there for the Salmon special for dinner tonight. $5.95 for grilled salmon, potatoes, rice and salad. Not only the price is great but the Salmon was the best I ever had. The outside was grilled to a crisp and inside was the most moist salmon I ever had. I always order a diet coke with a slice of lime. Most of the time at cactus club they always for get the first time or by the refill. Not only did it came with my diet coke the first time but on the refill with a different waitress. I don't know how they keep track of my lime request but it was pretty amazing for a restaurant at this price. I also watch game 4 of the NBA finals here. So the TV was a great plus. With other ppl cheering the game on (unlike other bars with drunk ppl) it had great atmosphere. If you're hungry and live in the area.... this place is a sure bet.
I love the lunch specials. I always get the pasta when I'm there for lunch. It's only $4.99 and the portion is comparable to other places that charge $10+. The food is nothing exceptional but it's very cheap and considering what you get for the price, I think it's a great value. Most of the items are $9.99 or below and they're all normal portions. The place is pretty nice and quiet as well so it's a good place to chill to grab a couple of drinks with friends.
This is one of my favourite little restaurants and one of the best values in the city. Almost every entree is 10$ and under, and you get a LOT of food. Not only that, but the burgers are yummy and juicy. The drink specials are also nice. Most entrees come with little potato pieces, rather than fries, which is a bit healthier, but also a bit more bland. There is also a sizable salad with each entree, which can fill you up instead of the potatoes.
The place can be a bit busy at times (waiting 10-20 minutes), but the atmosphere is lively and cheerful. There are 2-3 TVs there to watch the game while eating, and the waitstaff is quite friendly every time we go. In the dozen or so times I've been there, the experience and food have always been good.
Visited this joint on a weekday during lunch and found the service to be a bit slow. We were the first in line and nobody came to greet us or take our name. There were only two servers and one was making drinks at times. A few tables had dirty dishes on them and were not cleaned up after the patrons left. So for service, it was nothing to write home about. As for the food, had the cheeseburger with bacon and it was pretty good. Actually, for the price and with an entertainment coupon, it's excellent. The potatoes are a little strange, tasted ok but rather have fries. All and all, a good place to go for some pub grub. If you want service though, don't come here.
Wait time is worth every penny when you go to this place! I've been here 4 times with companions and it never sstops amazing me. Just today I had the steak dinner which was on special for $6 and my lady had a chicken pesto sandwich, plus wings and a coffee. When u look at the menu, you will feel like everything is on special. Food was delicious and plentyful! Service was on time and helpful. The best part of this experience was getting the bill, blows me away everytime how inexpensive a hearty meal can be! Love this place and reccomend it to everyone! Thank you x-site!
I am kicking myself for writing this !
The place is too damn busy now !
I just panned two other local eateries this evening and I guess I had to make up for it by writing something nice about a place I do like. I have been coming to X-Cite for years now; both for lunch and dinner and I have never, never been disappointed. The waitresses are friendly and remember everybody, The portions are huge. The quality is top notch for a spoon. I love their steaks.
Most of the other reviews here cover the basics and I was delighted to read others supporting this great place.
I can't add anything new.
The only problem is and the reason I hesitated to submit my review is because now too many people know about X-Cite. I guess that says it all.
I go there for lunch specials.. it's less than $15 for lunch with a beer. I have had a couple burgers and the chicken souvlaki. You get a decent amount of food and it tastes GREAT. I would definitely go here again and even recommend it to friends. You should check it out!
Well I went here tonight with one of my friends, it was just the two of us and we watied about 20 minutes to be seated. The staff were very young but that was okay some of them were very friendly. The food is alright, the specials are amazing though. Rice, Potatoes, Salad, Garlic Bread & whatever the specialty is, is only 5.95 its very cheap and worth going there. it's a good place to eat with your friends the other times i've been there the service has been great except this time..
In terms of price and size, you can't beat this place. Where else can you get a burger, fries and salad for around $7 bucks? Also they have these daily specials that are ridiculously priced. Today I had a huge plate of their Monday night steak special. There was a moderately sized steak, lots of tossed salad, rice and potatoes with sour cream. I ordered a medium well steak but it came very well done. The salad was very basic and I could have definitely made better ones myself. Of course for the $5.95 price, what was I to expect? The only thing is that they made you buy a drink too. In anycase, it came out to around $8 bucks. For this price, you can't even get the same food at a food court. In terms of service, the staff was fairly young and you can tell they were tired as there was only 3 wait staff for a busy night today. Overall, I'd recommend this place if you want a quick bite at an affordable price and are not too picky with the food quality. It does get busy sometimes though and I saw a staff member ask a table that was sitting there chatting to leave cause people were waiting at the door. Oh by the way, don't try the soup. I had two different soups there and both times, I regretted order them. I don't know what they put in their soups but it tastes horrible.
I used to come here more often as a student at SFU. It is still a great place for me to hang out and catch up with old friends, grab a decent bite for good value. Sometimes the service can be slow if its very busy, but most of the time we love it for their great burgers (Tues. is burger night) and cheap drinks. Havarti and Cajun Chicken are my favourite.
nothing special about this place. the portions are large and the price decent but the food in my opinion, is rather bland. I ordered the pesto chicken and while it was warm it wasn't hot. I like their wings though. It would help if they seasoned it before cooking but the crunchy skin and sauce is delicious. While I wouldn't mind having to go back, I wouldn't choose to eat here again. Not interested in trying anything else in the menu except maybe the wings..
Have been going here for a few years years and it is still one of my favourite spots. The lunch specials available from 11-4are $4.95 with the purchase of a beverage. The portions a just right for me, i always leave satisfied. For lunch I like getting the chicken souvlaki or a pasta dish. The souvlaki comes with pita bread, salad, rice and potatoes, well worth the price. The pasta dishes come with garlic toast and the portion is generous as all their portions are.
For dinner there is a different special from 5pm - 9pm roughly mon-thurs. Mon - 6oz steak, Tues - any burger off the menu (except the salmon burger, Wed - Chicken Souvlaki, Thurs Salmon. Dinner specials are $5.95 with the purchase of any beverage. I really like the salmon dinner, the salmon is a little crispy on the outside and really juicy in the inside.
Most dinners come with rice, potatoes, salad and garlic toast. The calamari appetizer is good too, not overly battered.
Great value for the food. Pretty dark inside, and service can be slow if it is really busy but most of the time they are pretty good.
We eat here because it's quick, tasty, cheap and it's really close to home. The smell of the copper on the table tops and the often cheesy piped in music can be distracting, but after a couple of pints, who cares. The servers are always pleasant and have never gotten an order wrong. The random hours of operation can be frustrating.
