Burgers for bucks
By Bonka of Vancouver (464 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, November 12, 2009 - 2:44am [Dine in]

I had heard of this place before but never managed to venture to until recently. It's a bar themed visage with the usual overhead music and background televisions, yet it doesn't feel like a bar. Neat and tidy everything is up to snuff.

We ordered burgers all around with a homous and garlic cheese bread starter. Their homous is not for the easily offendable, with a sharp, pungent zing of raw garlic; a tasty yet eye-twitching foray for the tongue while the garlic bread with melted cheese was a melt-in-your-mouth pleasure. The burgers covered all the food group bases: tomato, onions, cheese, hand pressed beef patty on a toasted kaiser bun. Well seasoned and charred it had the good kind of greasiness and meaty flavour. The "spuds" on the side was a healthy alternative to french fries as was the amply portioned house salad, which was by no means second string. Portions are daunting but the prices offer superlative value, I don't remember seeing any item on the menu over $10.

The service is brisk, if not a little hasty. They're all business, and are quick for water top ups, table clearing with a unexpected checkup in there for good measure.

For a better than average burger'n'spuds'n'salad and soda for less than $10, you can consume a hungry man's meal for peanuts.

Good burgers at low prices
By Gidge of Vancouver (93 Reviews)

Previous reviews described this restaurant bang on. This is a neighbourhood resto that offers hand made burgers at rock bottom prices. I had a havarti burger which came with a huge portion of house salad, and 4 huge chunks of potato wedges. The burger was at least 3/4 in thick and was definitely hand made because it was oddly shaped and was uneven. Tasted pretty good but I think they could add more flavoring (salt, worcestershire sauce) to make it even tastier. The side salad was massive - filled more than half an already large plate. I couldn't finish my burger and had to offload it to my hubby. His selections were not as stellar - onion soup was bland and the chicken strips were overdone. Otherwise a good attempt. Service was efficient and friendly enough. Food came out fairly quickly and very hot too, which is always appreciated. Ambiance was a like a casual pub but with casual restaurant clientele. Crowd was diverse this Friday evening: couples, young groups of SFU students, seniors, and small groups of 30 something. I didn't see any children though but I don't think it's discouraged. Quite dark and very conducive to watching any game since they have 3 flat screens strategically placed throughout.

I don't know how this place makes money. The prices are incredibly low for fresh, hand made super-sized food. I'm happy to see that they have a good following and continue to thrive. Good, honest food at low prices. Support the little guys, you can't go wrong here.

Great experience

I finally found my coupon book, and so it was time to give X-site a try. I’ve read the reviews here, and I was excited to try this place. I had a calamari appy and a classic burger. My wife had the prawn alfredo.

The calamari was not greasy, and was not overdone. The classic burger was a char-broiled masterpiece, and was juicy and satisfying. I thought the spuds were a nice change from the usual fries, and the salad was tasty. Most places treat a salad like an afterthought. Not here. Alas, the prawn alfredo as a bit of a disappointment. There were few prawns to be seen, and the sauce was bland and watery. Next time we will try one of ther other pasta dishes. They had Long Island iced tea on special, and they were powerful but not overwhelming. My wife had the regular iced tea, and we were surprised to find that refills are not free. That seems a little cheap.

The restaurant has quite a funky ambience, and the service was great. Example: As I was waiting for the bill, I was thinking how great a glass of water would be, and the waitress appeared suddenly and put it on the table. That has never happened to me at any restaurant. Little things like that really make a difference. There is a mixed North Burnaby crowd, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. This is a great place to have a relaxing meal.

I will be back since they have steak and beer specials on Mondays.

Very pleasant service. Nice crispy buns.

Love the buns for the burgers but the burgers themselves could be a little dry at times and not enough condiments. The mushroom burger doesn't have nearly enough mushrooms to be named as such, rather, it's more like "a burger with mushrooms" since the slices are few. Though I like the bun, it is difficult to keep it together whilst eating the burger hands-on. It's just simpler either separating the top from the bottom half and eat it separately or just knife-and-fork it.

Great prices for alcohol so pass on the juices as those are mainly from concentrate.

Avoid the chicken fingers! Super dry and though portion is small, you still might feel inclined to leave the rest alone after the first bite. Then again, I haven't tried ordering that a 2nd time so it could have just been one of those days.

Not a fan. I like inexpensive meals, but not if they taste like it. I had the curry pasta. Yuk. Weak, thin tasteless sauce. Very few of the vegetables in it, mostly just pasta. The alfredo was deemed bad as well. The only people who liked their meals were the people who had the chicken souvlaki. And they really only like if for the quantity, not the quality. A white carb-fest. Waitress would not give us separate bills. Would not return.

Good and bad

Went for lunch with a group. I had never even heard of this place but some people had been before. The waitress was a total HAG with a major attitude. I gave her ZERO tip which was too much. She was so rude, trying to get us to order before all of our group had even arrived. Gave us total attitude when we wanted to wait for everyone, seemed stupefied when we asked for water and refused to give us separate bills even going so far as to say "NO I will NOT do separate bills." The stupid woman doesn't even get that you get bigger tips that way. What a dummy. I have seriously never wanted to hit a waitress before.

Anyway the food was not bad at all. The lunch specials were ridiulous - in a good way. If you order a drink(even just a pop) the entree is only $4.95!! The best entree seemed to be the chicken souvlaki which was one good sized skewer with tons of rice, tzatziki, pita and caesar salad. There pasta dished, burgers, sandwiches etc. For under $9 including tax no tip you get a huge lunch. I would definately go again and make a point not to sit in the bag's section.

I've been wanting to come here based on the good reviews and because I live so close by. I finally succeeded this weekend! I came here for dinner with my boyfriend. And since we had an entertainment coupon, why not??

We each ordered a chicken dinner (his- cajun chicken, me-pesto chicken) complete with a nice portion of chicken, salad, potatoes, rice and garlic bread. It was a great deal - which is why I rated the food a 4. Great price, plenty of food - I like it!

The service was very pleasant. Somes places frown on you when you present any kind of coupon, which is why I'm always hesitant when using Entertainment coupons. Our server was very kind from the beginning to the end.

Then we got our bill. Only $12!
I will definitely return - they have great specials like 2 for 1 appies after 10 pm daily!

Great Value

The food is alright. As others have stated, the main issue is food coming with baked(?) potato chunks instead of fries. I hate those potatos they are so damn bland. If they changed this to fries or better yet gave an option for caeser or soup it would be totally awesome.

Service is OK. I think we've only ever had one server. She seems busy as that is probably how they keep costs down, but when she gets around to you she is quite pleasant. The restaurant description above says it's like cactus club, but really, the waitress(es) are not cactus club material =).

The main thing going here is the prices/value. I mean the prices could be from a menu from 10 or 20 years ago. I remember seeing ads of with their prices for years before I even went thinking this place might be scary at these prices. But it's fine.
I actually feel guilty eating at these prices. They have good drink specials too. If I didn't always have to drive or go back to work I'm sure I'd order myself pitchers of their specials just for myself.

The ratings I give are biased upwards based on the amazing value here. If these were cactus club prices, I'd actually say the place would be just OK then.

Full Steak Dinner $9.95

The restaurant has a pub style atmosphere. There was a 15 minute wait for a table, as it is very busy. The menu is mainly burgers and all items are really well priced. We had the New York pepper steak for $9.95. We received a platter of food consisting of a 6 oz. steak perfectly cooked with rice pilaf, potatoes, salad and garlic bread. Really a good deal. Two steak dinners, drinks and tip and the total bill was $44.

Customers seem to be mainly locals and SFU students, Staff is friendly. Definately worth a visit.

Large Portions!!
By Balmy of Burnaby (52 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, May 22, 2009 - 2:53pm [Dine in]

Came here yesterday with two others at around 7:30 pm and there was a line up! Took about 20 mins before there was a table for us.

We had calamari as a starter. Ice tea for drinks. Two of us ordered the peppercorn new york steak entrees and the other person ordered the daily dinner special which was a grilled salmon fillet entree. All entrees are served with salad, potatoes, rice and garlic toast.

The value is amazing. Large portions for the price you pay for. The 6 oz steaks was just under $10. We didn't realize that the salmon special was basically $6 until we asked for the bill! My friend also had leftovers to take home because she couldn't finish everything.

Service was a bit slow because the place was full. They had a kitchen guy? clearning plates, packing up food and grabbing the servers' attention when someone wanted to order food. It was good that they had extra help. However, watching him pace back and forth between the tables when there was nothing for him to do can be distracting at times. The restaurant isn't that big so it didn't take long for him to be walking by our table once again.

They have dinner specials Mondays to Thursdays. They have lunch specials as well from Mondays to Saturdays. Food quality is consistent. Calamari was a bit soggy. Large quantity for the price you pay for compared to other places. Everything else was good. They messed up on my steak order. It was the first time it has ever happened to me. I ordered medium and ended up with a well-done piece of meat. I didn't complain because they were so busy and my friend offered half of his steak anyways.

Ambiance is a bit on the dim side. It does have a pub feel and there were quite a few tables with their pitcher special and people sitting in the bar section watching some game that was going on.

Will go back to try their other dinner specials.

Went to the X-Site Grill on Monday for dinner and the place was packed. This is a small neighborhood restaurant frequent by SFU students and locals. The prices are great and the food tasted home cooked. I order the 6 (maybe in reality only 4 ½) ounce steak which came with green salad, roast potato, rice and 2pcs garlic bread. With a glass of draft beer special, my portion of the bill was $12.50 plus tip and Taxes. What’s there not to like?

The two waitresses were efficient and easy on the eyes. We had tipped extra for their service and smiles. Over all, we had a good satisfying experience. Made me feel like I was back in University days.

When I was informed of the 4.95 daily special entrees, I was highly skeptical in my expectations. Not only was my blackened salmon grilled nicely - it was a generous portion for the price, along with the mound of green salad and boiled potatoes and sour cream - all for 4.95. Too sweet of a deal compared to say, a Salmon entree costing over 20 bucks at the trendier Vancouver places. Unfortunately, I would be hard pressed to travel to North Burnaby to find a bargain as the money I'd save would be cancelled by the ridiculous fuel prices at the pump.

X-site is close to my heart as it is close to my home. I've been here many times and what always brings me back is the low prices and great food! For around 6 dollars you can get a mushroom burger with potatoes and salad! Everything on their menu is under $10, and they have a pretty decent selection of burgers, pasta, and steak too! Service is fast and unobtrusive. The room is very dark and there's funky decor on the walls. Food comes out pretty fast so you can get in and out fast if you're somewhat on the go.

I went to x-site with a friend on a whim one night. What a find! I am surprised it wasn't busier. The food was very inexpensive with decent-sized portions. The service was good. It was a little dark in there, but the atmosphere gave off a good vibe. I haven't been back since, but will definately go again.

Cheap Prices, Decent Food

Food - All menu items are $9.99 or less. I ordered the steak, and my SO ordered the garlic prawns. The steak was okay. About as good as you can get for a $10 steak meal, but obviously not the greatest. I tried the prawns, and they were very buttery, but not garlicy at all.

Service - Excellent service. The power actually went out when we were eating, but the staff really stepped up by lighting candles and placing them at each table.

Ambiance - Its a bistro. Pretty rustic interior, but there was a weird smell (like rotting wood) that permeated the air.

Quite honestly, I haven't been to X-site Grill in years until a friend of mine sugguested we go there for lunch. The place looks the same...copper top tables and the grill on the left hand side. The place was semi full of customers and I could see 5 to 7 takeout lunches packed and ready to be picked up. All three of us decided on the lunch specials..couldn't believe my eyes...$4.95 each!!( small catch...you will have to order a drink ie pop or something). The waitress was pretty friendly and efficient. I decided on a cheese burger with a coke and they decided on the chicken souvlaki with pops as well. Our food arrived in short order and portions were quite BIG for 5 bucks. The chicken souvlakis came first...Wow...one large skewer with rice, side salad, potato wedges, and pita bread. Mine arrived a minute later...the verdict...cheeseburger was pretty good...homemade patty with fresh standard veggies on a kaiser roll..the side caesar was big and fresh tasting as well. Our bill come up to 20 bucks and change...roughly $6.75 per person. All I can say...GOOD and cheap eats!!

Consistently decent food, for really cheap prices. Not sure how they manage to make any money, but am grateful it's around as the food is consistenly decent to pretty good. Have been here a few times, once as a group of 2, others in groups of 6 to 10. The service is always speedy and good. Will definately be making a trip again in the near future.

I haven't been there in a while, but I'm pretty sure from recent reviews that they haven't raised their prices. I used to go there up to 3 times a week and the food is dirt cheap - and actually good food too! I don't understand how they stay open, but the prices and service work for me. It's close to SFU and the prices attract poor students. It's decor is simple, but it works. The service is great - it's so small, it's hard not to be. I think I'll re-visit soon.

LOVE this place!

Been here a few times and I love it. It's one of those "where shall we go to eat? I dunno... I dunno... Let's just go to X-site." But it never disappoints! Parking might be a bummer because there's limited space on the street right infront of it but there's parking nearby so walking only takes a couple of minutes. It's a great place to go to if you want a place where you can chill or if you want to get served fast and get your butt out of there asap. The food and drinks are pretty cheap and the portions are big (you get a huge salad and potatoes) There's also specials every day and the staff's pretty friendly and most of the time are quite speedy when it comes to serving you.

It's dark and funky and they play a nice variety of music and the tvs are always on so you can catch up on sports as well.

The only thing I would change? More avocado on my Chicken Cali Burger.

Love their burgers!

A university student's best friend...
By Centauri of Vancouver (33 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, July 21, 2007 - 4:42am [Dine in]

As a fourth-year university student (and an unemployed one at that), I perhaps appreciate the value of a dollar more than many others. This restaurant reminds me that there are establishments out there that do not seek to eviscerate one's wallet whenever possible.

The food is copious - well-roasted and flavourful potatoes (how did someone find these dull?) are always on the side, with a salad. Fresh burgers, steaks, appetizers, and large dinner-size salads abound, all grilled up quite quickly in plain view. To those that complain about no fries - your waist-line probably with thank you later, and these potatoes they serve make a nice change from the regular "do you want fries with that" restaurant.

Atmosphere is excellent - art-deco metal wall-sculptures, brass-topped tables, and a dark and relaxing atmosphere - the best kind of ambience after a long day of staring at textbooks. Servers are friendy, and reasonably attendant, but there are usually very few, meaning that if the tables are fairly full, you may end up waiting quite awhile to be waited upon.

Last, but certainly not least, the price; wow. This is the best food for this kind of pricing (everything under 10$) that I have ever heard of - most others seem to agree on this too. If you're paying under ten dollars for a generous portion of steak, potatoes, and salad - BE THANKFUL! I cannot think of another restaurant that serves this quality/quantity of food for such a reasonable price.

I heartily recommend this place to my fellow students, or anyone who wants a casual dining experience that is a unique amalgamation of value and quality. Don't expect the world, but do expect a good time.
