Slow Service, Outdated Atmosphere

Grungy and outdated this large pub is out of the 80's and even then it was must have been olde fashioned looking. We waited an hour for the burger special, ordered beer and drank it while we waited. By the time food came we had to leave and they would not let us take the food out, saying it was a dine in only special. I told the waitress we waited an hour and ordered drinks, she said it was not her decision and could do nothing about it.
The burgers vanished- they did not return to our table to give us the option to scarf some down and then ask for a doggy bag, that was it, we never saw them again. They probably gave it to the other hungry people waiting. It was a terrible ending to an evening that was tolerable. The food is cheap and mediocre, but I would pass on this place for sure.

Working Class Pub

Vancouver banned indoor smoking a few years ago, but this place still reeeks of smoke. They need to improve the outtake fan as there is a smoking area "outside", but the doors are always open to the inside and the place always smells of smoke.

The staff are very, very pleasant. There is no "attitude" here!!! There are always drink and food specials. The food is okay. It is not as good as the Penny Lane Pub (South Main), but it is okay.

The dear husband and I went here a few weeks ago. We each had the steak dinner special. A small steak, cooked to order, each order had three prawns. It came wth fries, salad and garlic bread. We both upgraded to Cesear Salads and I ordered a side of gravy. The steaks were good. The prawns were not fabulous. My husband didn't eat one of his because it was undercooked. The salad was good. All in all, the dear husband and I spent approximately $50.00 (includinjg tax and a tip between 15 - 20 %). Not bad for two steak dinners and four drinks!!!

This ain't the place for a romantic dinner. This ain't a family restaurant (licensed pub - no kidlets). However, for a short "date" with the dear husband it's decent. Hire a babysitter for an hour and a half or convince a neighbour to watch the kidlets for that long, as we've got an inxpensive kid free date.

Nostalgia Trip

I was in the Burnaby hood with Mrs. C and we were craving some food. I remembered a place I used to go to years ago when Chasiubow was just a single bun… The VIP is in the underground mall under the apartment buildings west of the Lougheed Mall. It can be hard to find, but it is worth the effort. This place has been around since approximately the beginning of time, and it has a great retro ambience. Lots of hockey jerseys on the walls, too many TV’s to count, pool tables, etc., and soft 80’s music floating in the air. Surprisingly, it is a rather intimate place on a quiet Monday. One new feature is the glass smoker’s cage in the middle of the room. It was kind of fun in a Dr. Evil sort of way to watch the poor wretches feed their addiction while I enjoyed fresh air.

Beer was on special as usual, and I had a frosty pint. Mrs. C only had a glass since one of us had to drive. This place actually does decent pub food, and so we ordered from the menu. I had the village burger, which had juicy fresh hamburger, onions, mushrooms cheese, bacon, tomato and lettuce. It was as good as I remembered, and my hands were covered in savoury burger juice at once. It was less than 8 bucks and came with crispy fresh fries. Mrs. C had chicken teriyaki, which featured 2 chicken breasts, rice and veggie stir-fry. I think the rice could have used something more, but everything else was tasty. I noticed lots of new menu items since my last visit, so there is plenty of variety.

The ambience was pleasant, and the locals were very friendly. I found the servers to be quite nice, and everything was clean. The best part was that I brought my hot bar pickup with me. It’s nice to have someone to share dinner with.

Recommended.

Disappointing

I have not been to the Village Inn Pub for a long while and I was very disappointed with the service. We sat for 10 mniutes before we went to the bar to get a drink to be told by the very rude bartender to go back to our seat and the waitress went come over and take our order, she was talking to someone at the bar, and did not want to serve us.

Finally our waitress came over and told are order the food was good, I had the Chicken Wings and the very hot. My friend said the steak was good. I don't not think that we will be back. Which is a shame I really like the bar.
