My family has been picking up birthday cakes here over the last 30 years or so. The cakes are good, all purpose crowd pleasers. They aren't too rick and sweet, not too bland. My favourite is the vanilla, with the layer of custard and the buttercream layer and icing. Mmmmmmm.
My husband called ahead today and asked for a 7" cake (feeding 10 people). They said that they had one left, with pink roses on. My seven year old (whose birthday we were celebrating) is pretty relaxed about pink and roses, so my husband went ahead and ordered it.
When he arrived to pick up, the clerk looked at the pink roses and asked my husband if my son had a favourite interest or sport. My son happens to like Thomas the Train and when my husband advised of this - the clerk advised that they could put some Thomas decorations over the roses to make it more custom for a boy's birthday and make it special for my son in particular.
The Thomas decorations were added and the cake looks great.
I really appreciated the quick thinking clerk and her initiative.
Also, as a side note - a friend was recently looking for specialty cakes (Pokemon). She was quoted $80 for a 6 inch cake from a DIFFERENT bakery. She had trouble finding a bakery which would do a themed cake (and would not charge her an arm and a leg). I would recommend Valley Bakery to her as our 7 inch cake (which was made themed for us) was around $25. It is worth a visit to see what they have if needing a cake for a children's party and special order something.
I haven't been here for a while....I wanted just to buy one or two bagels but they were all packaged up in six's not in bulk, when I asked the lady behind the counter...she seemed as if I asked a weird question.
I saw another package of buns and I thought that there was a hair on a bun.....the bakers need to be a little more attentive on their goods.
The service is snotty and I don't think that the ladies are happy at all working there....maybe the boss treats them like crap....but I think they need to be talked to and have some music and tables and chairs for customers to enjoy some goodies and with some coffee.
The pastries tasted stale when I got home...I ended up throwing the pastries out.
The sausage rolls were not that great...and after seeing the hair or whatever I saw on the bun the whole thing turned me right off.
Sorry, Valley bakery maybe at one time you were good...need to reno the place up again....and see the back kitchen...maybe then you can tie your hair up and be cleaner.
I won't go back and I go everywhere for a good bakery and I tell everyone not to go to Valley Alley!!!!!
This is my second fav bakery on the strip in the Heights. They've got a huge selection of mini sweets, perfect for bringing to parties. I've also bought some pies from them before. 8" pies for $5, tons of variaties - you can't go wrong.
They also sell puff pastry and pizza dough too.
Valley Bakery is a European style bakery where tradition, quality and taste intersect. They use natural ingredients like real whipping cream making their baked goods extra yummy.
Their cakes are delicious, with a light sponge cake texture, I recommend the tiramisu or mocha cake.
They have a large selection of tempting individual treats, pick up a few and create your own gorgeous dessert tray at home and serve with tea, for a perfect afternoon tea or dessert course.
My favorite treat here is their signature mini apple cheesecake square, it's a layer of creamy cheesecake filling topped off with a layer of fresh apple pie filling and freshly toasted almonds.
They also are one of the few bakeries that offer maple cupcakes. Their petite fours taste as delicious as they look here. They also have baked bread and a large selection of cookies priced at $3.50 for a dozen.
While I was there the other day, someone walked in and was thanking the staff for staying and waiting after closing hours because he had forgotton to pick up his wedding cake! This place has really great service.
The location is good for walking around and visiting adjacent interesting stores, as well there's a very good Italian deli just up the road.
Upon entering this bakery, you are transported back to a simple time - when you were young and visiting your godmothers' or grandmothers kitchen and there were sweets and pies and cookies abound.
Friendly, kind-faced women and girls serve you promptly, and offer you tasters of their peanut crunch cookies, or their buttery rainbow cookies.
I visited Valley Bakery last night and I think I'll be going back soon, if the pumpkin pie is anything as good as previous reviewers claim.
Myself, I purchased their crisp cinnamon butterfly cookies and some peanut crunch cookies. Deliciously nostalgic! They remind me of childhood birthday parties and visits to my (late) godmom who used to bake us goodies all the time.
Will have to try their cakes, eclairs, and other pastries.
When I was a kid the Valley Bakery was a treat! You could smell the aroma of fresh baked bread on a Saturday morning. The taste of sweet treats were enjoyed by all the kids going in the store with their parents.
The staff were friendly and nice... older staff that is! They used to offer the kids a whole baked fresh cookie, not the stale day or two old cookies that sit forever in the shelf tray now.
The breads aren't the same, there are too many choices and not enough home fresh ingredients, too many cut corners. The whipped cream doesn't taste the same as it once did.
Store looks the same but it isn't the same. Like everything else, we have to adapt to the times...
Too bad, so sad ~
everything ive ever had from there has been fantastic except the plain chocolate cake(chocolate fudge fantasic, chocolate bland) service is so great, if you buy something with young kids there the get a free cookie.and if you are even a moderate fan of pumpkin pie they are the place to go...pumpkin chiffon cake is devine! must stop or ill want to go right now....
