Pad Thai is not spaghetti
By Nissim of north burnaby (1 Review)
Submitted Monday, August 22, 2011 - 4:51pm [Dine in]

I used to love going to the Thai House Metrotown location. The food was delicious and the wait staff very friendly. I went again last Saturday evening with my fiancee and two of her family members from Victoria BC. I told my visitors how wonderful the food is at this restaurant.

I ordered the Royal Thai coconut and lichi drink with rum. My fiance ordered the virgin version of this drink. I rembered how wonderfully creamy and delicious this drink was the last time I ordered it. This time though it was extremely watered down.

My two visitors were in the mood for Pad Thai. When their dishes arrived it looked and tasted just like spaghetti with a cheap canned tomato sauce. This is Pad Thai? When i complained to the waitress she explained that this is the "New Tradition" pad thai. I wasn't aware that Thai people were adopting their cuisine to look and taste like cheap Italian food.

I ordered a chicken dish with Basil and onions and green and red peppers. The dish was obnoxiously salty. I asked for a replacement and it wasn't much better. Ninety percent of the dish was boiled green peppers. The rest was some bland chicken with onions, red peppers and basil. The basil was so over cooked I couldn't taste it. When the meal was finished and I asked the waitress for the bill I told her that this was the worst meal I've ever had here. She didn't seem to care. I wasn't offered any gesture of goodwill.

This place has seriously gone down hill. What a shame. I used to love this place but I will never return again. I had to apologize to my vistors from Victoria.

I have walked past this restaurant many times and there are often people waiting. I thought it's a pretty good sign, and finally decided to try it. It was a weeknight, and the restaurant was quite full. But we got a table fairly quickly.
The lettuce wrap with duck meat and veggies was excellent, with just the right amount of spice. The other dish we ordered, boneless chicken in peanut sauce, was way too sweet with coconut milk. Overall, we enjoyed the meal. One thing they could improve, though, is their service. It was pretty slooow. Fortunately we were not in a great hurry.

Decent curries, everything else was 'meh'
By Gidge of Vancouver (93 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, July 17, 2009 - 1:36am [Dine in]

Food: ordered the green curry with chicken served in a coconut shell and that tasted fine. Everything else tasted bland such as the sauteed prawns with veggies or the eggplant dish (I counted 9 slices of eggplant). The aromatic bouquet of spices and flavours typical of Thai cuisine just wasn't there. Pad Thai was not good, very tangy with a vinegary-ketchup-y taste. Although the curry was good, its portion size was paltry.

Service: Overall solid service. We were greeted, shown to our seats and given menus right away. They came by to take our order, served water/drinks, and in 15 minutes or less our first dish arrived. The entire order came within a 10 minute span. No issues or attitude given when we handed in our coupon. They even said "thank you, bye" when we exited.

Value: Mains were mostly between $12 to 18 dollars and I found the mediocre taste coupled with smaller portion size of only decent value. With the coupon, the cost per person was relatively low ($16 per head) but the food itself was quite ordinary so I will not be in a rush to return with so many better Thai restaurants in town.

Ambiance: spacious and simply decorated with Thai and Asian ornaments and artwork. The overall look is a bit dated (reminiscent of the mid 90s) but the restaurant is well maintained and appeared to be clean. The ladies' washroom was pretty clean. Fairly busy for a Thursday evening with about 75% of the restaurant occupied. Very mixed clientele ranging from young families, older couples, groups of younger folk, etc.

With ample free parking and convenient locale, I may return but only with a coupon.

Decent Thai digs

I tend to come here with a group of 4 and it always seems so ordinary.

Their dishes aren't bad but they seem to lack that kick that wows you when you take a bite. I've noticed some inconsistencies with their dishes as well.

The order generally ends up being Satays, Pineapple Fried Rice, Pad Thai, Green and/or Yellow Curry, Tilapia and Tom Yum Gai. The Satays always come out different. Either juicy or cardboard dry. Their dishes with chicken almost always come overcooked so it's tough and rubbery. The Curry dishes are quite aromatic but they seem to be stingy on the meats and vegetables and invariably ends up becoming a soup on your plate. The Pineapple Fried Rice and Pad Thai seems to be consistently made and tend to fill you up easily.

Service is good but the servers approach you without smile and come and go with haste, so if you don't mind that cold front they do everything they're suppose to do.

I can see what this place stays busy it's probably the first Thai place that comes to mind (for some reason the similar Tropika jumps out as Malaysian). It's decent but I've had much better.

Great Thai food

This Thai House location is by far the best one out there. A great and convenient location, it is always packed inside, especially during lunch hours. During the week, they offer a lunch special for only $6.95. The lunch specials offer a choice of 18 of their regular menu items at a lunch sized portion. Also includes rice, cup of soup and a spring roll. An excellent deal. This place is everyone's favorite when going for a work group lunch. (be sure to try their pineapple chicken fried rice)
We also have them cater to our workplace on many occasions. Always excellent service and very fair prices.

Not even close to "Royale"
By HungryEyes77 of Vancouver (19 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, August 16, 2010 - 12:16am [Dine in]

Dined at the Burnaby Thai House "Royale", which should be pointed out is no longer affiliated with the Thai House Group, with the family recently. We knew better from past experience but were in a pinch with hungry kids and limited time.

First off, Food. I just checked the Fraser Health Authority's health inspection site and I encourage all considering this restaurant to do so as well.

The menu offers all the typical Thai fare that you would expect from a Thai restaurant but I would argue the authenticity of the food delivered... two examples: we ordered the traditional dish, Pad Thai. It doesn't take a foodie to see that they made the dish using either ketchup or tomato sauce. We also ordered the Beef with Green Beans and lime leaves... no lime leaves, which if you'd tried this ingredient you'd know that it has a very distinct and pleasing taste. I questioned the staff there and at first they denied there should even be lime leaves in the dish. Then they checked with the kitchen and came back saying that the lime leaves were blended into the sauce. Enough said. Other dishes were similarly disappointing if you were looking for even half decent (real) Thai food.

Secondly, Service. The few times I've dined here for lunch, I've always noticed food comes out very, very fast. Everything is pre-made during lunch... even if it's a late lunch. So if you show up after prime lunch hour, the food served will at least a couple hours old. Staff was on-hand and ready to take orders, fill water, and take your money but not much else. Little pleasantries and certainly no knowledge of the menu.

For the food alone this place should be avoided, but add in the prices and services and you should invest the time to drive to a better Thai restaurant...

One final note, Ambiance. I remember going to this restaurant when Station Square first opened when I was a kid. Nothing has changed. Nothing.... well, except maybe the owners and any sense of authenticity about Thai food.

Used to be better

Submitted Saturday, April 10, 2010 - 4:39pm [Dine in]

This has been our standby Thai place for years, but the quality of the food seems to have deteriorated a bit. The spring rolls were swimming in oil - the plate had a pool of it, and it tasted really greasy...disappointing, because that used to be my favorite dish. We had the green chicken curry, which was good and had a good portion of chicken in it. The pad thai seemed bland, and even though the prawns in it were quite large, they were a bit fishy smelling. Can't fault the service though, it's always consistent and attentive. Seems a bit on the expensive side, especially when compared to other types of Asian food. Nothing exciting, but will fill you up...and you'll have leftovers to take home from the decent sized portions.

Came here last week with a friend, got a pad thai and vegetarian lettuce wrap. It was pretty slow cause it was mid afternoon.. around 4 ish? So there weren't many people. Service was brief, but came when I gave them a bit of eye contact.

Each dish was 11.95 and generously portioned. We shared the dishes but still had like almost half to take home. The pad thai came with pretty large sized shrimp. The lettuce wrap tastes more authentic than the one at Green Basil, and tastes better too cause the tofu that is used at Green Basil is entirely deep fried.

The service here was fine, like I said, very few customers. It was weird though, they constantly topped off our waters but didn't say a single word to us. And the restaurant is run by Chinese people.

The place isn't over decorated, it's okay, nothing special.

I'll come back maybe, maybe not. Wouldn't recommend or bash the restaurant.

The pad thai reeked of discontent
By azn_msfyt of Delta (194 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 7:15pm [Dine in]

Food: The chicken with cashews was bland and had very little chicken or cashews. The prawns with curry sauce was watery and jam-packed with veggies, bland and had very little prawns - I felt cheated for paying $ 16 for that dish. The most disappointing was the pad thai with prawns and scallops - the dish came out clear coloured with a few chili flakes and bland. I've had pad thai here a lot before and it is not supposed to look or taste like that.

Service: We ordered almost immediately after we were seated and after a 30 min wait and seeing other people who came in after us eating already, I inquired to the waiter/host and was dismissed - he didn't even look at me as I spoke and simply said "uh huh, yeah" and walked away. He was shuffling around with things at the counter, not checking on my order. Another waitress then rushed over and asked if we wanted to order. I told her we ordered over 30 min ago without even seeing our appies. She then rushed off and I could see her, the waitress who took our order and the host discussing it and then rushing around on the cpu and kitchen - they forgot our order. The waitress came back and said "soon" - no apologies or anything. People sitting behind us who had ordered when we complained were getting their food before us. People seated after us were already leaving by the time we got our mains. The waitress who took our orders avoided us the entire night. Overall, it was over 45 min before we saw any food and it took almost 2 hours for this meal. No apologies or anything.

Ambiance: Nice and cosy.

I will never return to this restaurant and although I feel guilty for not tipping, there was no way I could justify doing so. Our food was obviously rushed and the service was absolutely terrible in comparison to the many other times I've been here. Sorry Thai House but you've lost a long time customer for good.

my friends and family have been patronizing the metrotown area eateries for years (work and now live in the area). we like to try new restaurants but we always circle back to our favorites when we haven't planned the night out. we particularly tend to go asian and we love thai food (basil, spiciness and my girlfriend loves the chilis). thai houses have been around as long as i've been on the west coast and the metrotown location is a standby for us. we've been to the other thais and they're ok but the thai house is truly a gem. we love their shrimp cakes, calamari (a thai twist), and their lettuce wrap with ostrich (no kidding) is delicious. if we're entertaining, we definitely order their crab with their special yellow curry sauce and seafood (scallops, mussels, clams) infused into the delicious sauce. my girlfriend also loves their pineapple fried rice. we tend to wash it all down with either a thai iced tea (interesting concoction) or a royale thai drink (lychee based frothy drink). typically asian, there aren't a whole lot of dessert choices (but my nephew always enjoy their choices of ice cream or deep fried bananas). but after a meal of spice and curries, i'm stuffed as it is.

their service is fine. not too chatty folks but courteous and efficient and they're good with suggesting a compliment to an order. so if you're in the mall area and looking for eats, you really can't go wrong with stopping here - there's ample parking too.

good health and good eats!

More Chinese than Thai
By meowmeow of Vancouver (2 Reviews)
Submitted Wednesday, September 1, 2010 - 10:34pm [Dine in]

My Vegetarian Green Curry consisted of broccoli, cauliflower, lots of celery, mushed up soft tofu, and one single piece of carrot swimming in sauce. Very green indeed! (no, for some reason there wasn't even any basil!)

Lol seriously unless you are absolutely stuck in Station Square starving for Thai do yourself a favor and walk across the street to Green Basil instead. I have wanted to try out the restaurant after passing by it all the time and seeing all their "Best of Burnaby Now" posters. Knowing that it would be somewhat a pricey place I figured to head over during lunch instead to test the waters par se before bringing any friends.

Bottomline think of a "westernized" Chinese restaurant serving only "mock-Thai-style" dishes in a clean but dated environment. Depending I guess on what time you go you may have a better server (I went between shifts and have two distinctly different services as they switched). Ok I guess, but absolutely not worth a repeat visit.

Oh, and have I mentioned that they have the worst Thai Iced Tea EVER..

(even the canned stuff from Chinatown groceries is better so save your money and have a Starbucks or something because this version is probably closer to orange coloured evaporated milk with ice than a real drink. Oh well, you've been warned!)

The place is nice and the service was attentive but the food was not so good.

We ordered the Pad Thai and a few other dishes and all I can say is that you could get the same quality of food, and sometimes even better, from a mall food court. The Pad Thai was not good at all.

With all the dining choices in Vancouver we will not return. Nice service, nice ambiance, but unmemorable food.

We drop by here at least once a year (thanks to those Entertainment book coupons). Prices are reasonable. Food is not bad.

The Pad Thai Noodles are good along with the fried rice. Atmosphere is very comfortable and located in the busy Metrotown area.

For someone curious about trying Thai food this one of the places I would recommend.

Pretty good thai food

We've come to Thai House at Metro quite a few times because of their central location. I love the red and green curries at Thai House. They're always very flavorful without the feeling of greasiness that other Thai restaurants have.

The Pad Thai new edition is really good with egg noodles. If you get it with rice noodles it can be hit or miss. Sometimes it's perfect and othertimes it's undercooked (has a bit of plastic texture). Their marinated grilled chicken is yummy! I don't really think all that much of their stir fried dishes. It's always curry for me when I come here.

The restaurant decor is charming. The bamboo basket lamps hanging overhead really gives the place a thai feel without over doing it. It's generally not very noisy and the waiter/waitresses are always professional and courteous. Haven't had any bad experiences with service, although food takes a little bit of time to get onto the table.

The menu is a little bit more expensive than your average thai restaurant, so more often than not we order their weekday lunch special. It's 7.50 for most of the curries on their menu and rice. A pretty good deal in my opinion. They also have 2 coupons in the entertainment book for 2 for 1 dishes.

Really "Meh"

Wow, this is amazingly mediocre. There is a serious market for better Thai food in Vancouver and even Green Basil across the street isn't that great (Better, but Thai House is cheaper with coupons).

I was pleasantly surprised that the service was actually decent and my water was constantly filled. Unpleasant surprise was the lack of a pot-sized rice to go with the curry so being charged $1.95 for every small bowl of rice is just a rip. Again, what is up with the Thai restaurants in Vancouver? It just doesn't make sense from a consumer stand point. I better head back to my Chinese restaurants that charge less for rice.

I am a big fan of Yaletown's Urban Thai, which is owned by the same people who own Thai House. But compared to former the Thai House is way way worse. Admbiance and service don't really matter if the curry is watered down to the consistency of .. well .. water. Admittedly we haven't been in a restaurant for the dinner, but the lunch dishes are not delicious if barely acceptable at all. So called salad is a pile of huge chunks of lettuce with virtually no dressing, the curry is pretty much tasteless, etc.

As I said - I don't know if the dinner fare is good, but I would recommend to stay away from their lunch offerings.

My friends and I decided to give this place a try although I wanted to try Green Basil across the street. Too bad I got sucked into listening to them.
Service was attentive. They filled our glass with water constantly.
Food on the other hand.. was oddly fast. It came out quicker than at Chinese restaurants. Weird. The food was just OK. Nothing special. Pad Thai could've been better. We asked for the curry to be mild. It was pretty decent with mushy egg plants. This chicken dish we had was a little too lukewarm for me. Perhaps it's supposed to be like that? Chicken slices were on a bed of spinach with peanut sauce. Anyone familiar with this dish? Other than that.. I probably won't be going back here again.

Had Christmas get together with another family today at this restaurant. We ordered the dinner for eight. All the food came out quite promptly and hot. Service was good for a place that was reasonably full of customers. Taste and flavours were very good and 'hot" was balanced very well. Among the dinner set there was also a very good fish dish of a thai sweet sour flavor....very good.
All and all a very good, fair tasting thai house. Would go again.

I was treated by a group of friends at Thai House in Burnaby.
It was quite busy. However, they managed to serve our dishes in a timely manner.
The food was great, and so was the royale thai drink. YUM!
I got to say that the value you receive from the dishes outweighs the price. I've read a lot of reviews about Thai House being a little expensive, but the portions are large and very fair. It's also a great family spot for good old warm comfort food: Green Curry, Yellow curry crab, pad thai etc etc

Thai house is often compared to green basil across the street.
Green basil isn't as consistent in my opinion. Also, the ambiance is so so..
