What on Earth is happening here? Enough is ENOUGH!!!

My family have visited this places since it was opened, since my mom has always loved to come here for Seafood Nabeyagi Udon, since we all know the sushi is just mediocre quality, not to mention watching the moisure in those plate on the food belt. On a Sunday lunch, my mom had the craving for her udon again, so we went Taisho once more. It wasn't a busy day, no line up, not fully seated yet as well. Everything is "ok" as they always were, not very attentive, took our order, brought the food to the table, and left us all along.
My mom dislike shellfish, so the clams are always given to me or my dad. The problem smack right into me and my dad mouth when we were eating the clams from the seafood Nabeyagi udon, it's full of "SAND"!!!!!! Not one, or two, all three of the clams had mouthful of SAND!! It just totally turned down my appetite of the day, and wondering what are the cook doing (isn't it basic knowledge to put clams in salted water so they would actually spit out sands). And the sledge hammer wack in our face when we called the manager, and he dared to give useless excuse "we can't guarantee every clam is without sand, since we bought them in"!!!! And refuse to do anything about it. I pretty much argued with him, yet he doesn't seem to care beside adjust the bill by like $5. I also called him over once more to removed the 15% Gratitude they dare to put on my bill, and I gladly left the place wihtout any tip, and convinced my mom never return again.

P.S. I'm working in the restaurant field as well, and everything goes out of the kitchen to the customer has to be cleaned, cooked, edible. It's NOT acceptable when the clam has sand in them at all.

Taisho is permanently closing on March 21/22 of 2009. They have stopped serving the ayce portion of the menu and are now only focusing on a la carte items, with every item being 10% off.
The food is basic, and the service is extremely lacking, no refills offered, and in order to get any service whether that be being seated in the restaurant or having the order taken, the food delivered or even corrections to the order- like you forgot my miso soup- you practically have to hit the server or other staff over the head.
Nothing remarkable about this place,
and then comes the bill- let me tell you right now
please don't even ask them to remove the 15% gratuity to the bill, just tell them you don't want to add more to the bill, and that you want the ordinary total. I did this tonight when we went, and she readjusted the total without argument. She would have had a huge problem should she have fused, I know my rights and I know the law and I know how to file a complaint where it will sting.
If you ask nicely for them to remove it, and then they disagree this is grounds for a complaint to the Better Business Bureau. No business can adjust your total and add a tip without giving you the option of deciding for yourselves what you would prefer to pay.
Like some of the previous entries, I had her remove the tip and left paying the total bill only with no extras.
I am sorry the restaurant is fallen on hard times and has to close, Im sorry that the cranky people they did employ are losing their jobs and Im even sorry that they didnt practice excellent customer service skills at the best of times, but what makes me the angriest is the fact that they are screwing people out of their hard earned money by these unscrupulous acts.
I would recommend people never eat here again, but since it's not going to last long it doesnt matter but please WATCH YOUR BILL, AND TIP WHAT YOU WANT NOT WHAT THEY SEEM TO ADD!!!!!! YOUR THE CONSUMER AND YOU HAVE MORE RIGHTS THEN THEY DO WHEN IT COMES TO DECIDING THE TIP!!!

First off, they shouldn't be adding gratuity onto my bill when service wasn't even subpar. If people aren't tipping, there MUST be a reason. EVERYONE can't be stingy/cheap. Food was somewhere between decent and horrible. AYCE isn't even worth it for my friends and I because we only end up eating 2 different things, over and over.

All I can say is that it's just a tiny step up from food court food.

I went to Taisho with a couple of friends for dinner. We went for the regular menu instead of the all you can eat. Nothing really fancy about the food. It's an ordinary japanese restaurant where food is not exceptionally good and not exceptionally bad either. It's doable for the price. In any event, the food was not the major issue. My gripe is the gratuity that was tagged on to the bill at the end of the night. They added 15% on to our bill as tip. Come on, this is no 5 star restaurant and service was just mediocre at best. They brought us the food and only came once to pour tea. At an average restaurant, I expect that tip would be based on the customer's discretion. When we asked the waitress about the 15% automatic add on tip, she gave this lame excuse that the hostess who brought us to the table should have told us. Of course, the hostess wouldn't have told us because if she did, we would have left the restaurant even before we got seated. After a few more minutes of acting with the other staff members, the waitress came back to our table. She told us that she would deduct the 15% gratuity from our bill. She stated that we wouldn't have to pay the 15% tip if we didn't think that the service was worth it. Not only did we think that the 15% was not worth it, we didn't put any tip at all. We just paid for the price of our food plus the tax and left. Needless to say, because of this dishonest business practice, my friends and i will not be returning back any time soon. I believe the people at the next table also had an issue with the gratuity tagged on to their bill as well. They probably weren't as vocal as us but why get bullied by this immoral, dishonest and manipulative act. Very unprofessional. And I thought i saw it all:=)

Dishonest Conduct - 18% Gratuity
By Gracie_Shine of Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Sunday, January 4, 2009 - 7:32pm

I filed a compliant to the BBB regarding Taisho's business conduct. Below is my complaint and experience there:

On December 27th, 2008 I went to Taisho Japanese Restaurant for the lunch all-you-can-eat sushi. I was with a party of 3 and the price for lunch all-you-can-eat was about $15 per person before tax and tip. When we finished and asked for the bill, the bill came with the total crossed out with pen. Handwritten below was: "Gratuity 18% = $56.88".

I believe this is dishonest and bad business practice for several reasons:
1. It was only a party of 3
2. The menu never mentioned nor was I informed at any time by the server of a mandatory gratuity
3. The mandatory gratuity of 18% is beyond the norm of 15% and excessive
4. I was charged the 18% gratuity on the AFTER tax amount rather than the BEFORE tax amount

As I was in a rush to leave, I did not have the time to go up to the manager and voice my concern. Since the incident happened I have done some research online. I found that, according to more than one review at "DineHere.ca" (an online site to comment on restaurants), Taisho has a habit of committing this dishonest practice. One review stated that he did question the manager for a reason and the manager replied, "It's the holiday season."

While charging a mandatory gratuity is entirely within their right (nevermind the fact that it is excessive to start with), it is also their moral and ethical obligation that such a gratuity is stated prior to service and food being served.

Not what it used to be

Taisho was a pretty decent place about 3 to 4 years ago but ever since they renovated it's just gone downhill from there. Before getting seated, the host told us about a 10% gratuity that would be automatically tacked onto the bill. There is a choice for All You Can Eat and regular menu. We chose the regular menu but as we sat down, it was apparent that even for All You Can Eat, there wasn't much choice on the revolving belt by the tables where you can grab sushi. In fact, I'm not even sure how long some items were sitting there but all there really was to choose from was tamago (egg) and California rolls. I think the look of the menu compared to how it was before says a lot about how the restaurant has changed. There aren't as many offerings as there were before.

I ordered the Nabeyaki Udon with salmon and tuna sashimi plus sunomono salad. These were pretty decent but I've had better Nabeyaki Udon. My friends ordered the sushi boat for two people that came with an assortment of nigiri, tempura and sashimi. I gave the tako (octopus) a shot and it wasn't very fresh and tasted quite fishy.

Despite the way the food tasted, the service was decent. Food arrived within a reasonable amount of time. The servers replenished our cups with tea quite regularly, picked up empty plates and even responded to other requests quite quickly. However, by the end of dinner, we weren't very satisfied with our meals and on top of that, weren't completely overjoyed with the idea of paying 10% for tips. We felt that the servers deserved it more than the chefs if they're the kind of place that split tips. After asking for the bill, we were surprised to find out that the server had written down in the blank printed space that appeared as "Gratuities ______%", that he had filled out 15%. This wasn't really much of a problem but I feel it's dishonest to tell people at the beginning that mandatory tips are 10% when in fact, the servers can fill out whatever they want. They should at least tell people it's a minimum. When asked at the cashier why it was upped to 15%, he replied that it's the holiday season. What an excuse.

Considering the nonsense of the mandatory tip for customers who aren't in a large group, along with the food that was almost decent, I would not recommend Taisho unless you are starving and have no place else to go.

Worst Japanese Food EVER!

I guess my title says it all. We decided to try this restaurant as the few times we passed by, it seemed pretty full. You can basically do either all-you-can-eat or a la carte and we decided to try all-you-can-eat. I don't know if going on a Thursday night somehow makes a difference on the experience, but it was not a good one.

For starters, our server was less than attentive and seemed to deliberately ignore me when I glanced over. Then there's the food, the items on the kaiten (the buffet is served as a conveyor-belt restaurant, although the selection on there is quite basic) were barely touched and the two things we decided to try weren't that great. Then we ordered some nigiri sushi. The rice was so dry and the tuna was FAR from fresh. The spicy salmon sashimi was obviously done with really old salmon as well.

So we decided to stay away from the fish and tried cooked foods to see if that might be a better choice....bad idea. The tempura was SUPER greasy (it seemed as if it cooked, cooled and then was thrown back in to warm it up...if you do that with deep fried stuff it tends to just soak up oil), the chicken karage although greasy, still managed to be really dry on the inside.

Suffice it to say the place was horrible and I would not recommend it anyone. I realize you may want to take each review with a grain of salt, but if you choose to go to Taisho, take a couple Rolaids with you as well.

The one positive I can say, is the place looks clean (although the kitchen, which is open concept, could have been better); the decor is also not bad, bright (in a nice way) and earthy...it's certainly becoming.

We love our Happy Boat!!

This is our second favourite choice for Sushi/Japanese in BBY, the first being Fish on Rice. We have tried the all you can eat buffet here, until we found the Happy Boat... $25 for 2 is pretty good, and there is lots of food. It comes with Miso to start, we usually order Goma Ae as an extra and sometimes Spicy Tuna or salmon as well. The boat itself comes with the Miso, tuna and salmon roll-6 pieces each, prawn tempura-2 each, veg tempura-3-4 pieces each & dipping sauce, deep-fried gyoza- 2 each (my only dissappontment, would rather regular), beef teriyaki, california rolls-3 pieces each, 6-7 large pieces of chicken karaage with sweet glaze, a bowl of steamed rice each and ice cream to finish. Would be filling enough without the add-ons, but we LOVE a good goma ae and theirs is very good. A very good solid choice for Japanese w sushi we have found, to date.

Sub-Par

I took the regular, all-you-can-eat dinner menu (the alternative is the deluxe which adds crepes and other kinds of nigiri sushi, which is $3 more). 10% gratuity is automatically included in each meal (they tell you this up-front).

They have a wide selection of dishes, from the usual starters, sushi and sashimi, rice dishes, noodles, prawn and vegetable tempura, and desert. However, most, if not all of the ones I sampled were served luke warm at best, cold often times. Their chicken karaage for starters was the last to come out, and it was covered in cold chocolatey sauce. It baffles me how they can serve burnt/overcooked ikakaraage cold! That was disgusting. The other dishes were average at best – katsudon, vegetable and prawn tempura, yakisoba, and sushi (BC Roll, Californika maki, etc). Desert is limited to one per customer only (savor it slowly, it's tiny). Someone sitting across me who ordered a la carte complained about her near-frozen tuna sashimi. So apparently this pre-cooked food must be made well in advance of the start of business.

Service can be very slow. They impose 3-item order per person per round, and you can only request for subsequent orders upon completion of the dishes. This leads to a lot of waiting time, and since each dish is on the small size, you'll go through each rather quickly. I couldn't understand why the server also kept on "keeping" my order sheet, so I'd have to request for it every time (which leads to even more waiting). Apparently they thought my 3 rounds was enough — a hint that I should get going already, perhaps?

The best thing I'd have to say about the whole thing is their place. Decent, clean, and spacious. But the slow service led to cold food, which led to an overall sub-par experience.

I'd strongly recommend looking for another place to curb your sushi/Japanese dish craving.

Just barely passing...

I've been to this restaurant quite often, and it's not for the food, but the convenience. If it didn't have a good location, the business would be closed pretty fast with the way things are going. Luckily, this place is right beside Silvercity Theaters and with it's enticing, yet semi-clean setting, it's like tempting a baby with candies - or in this case, many babies.

Although I've been to this place many times, like I said, I am going to write a review for it this time (don't think I wrote one for it yet lol)

This review will be based off of its ordering menu and not buffet. I will add the buffet part in part two.

PART ONE - First the pros -

#1 - PRICE - price was fair for its location and the amount of food given, but did not justify the quality. I had a hard time choosing whether to place price within the pros and cons section but seeing how most of the people who come here are young and, pardon me for saying this, 'inexperienced or lenient' japanese cuisine munchers, i thought perhaps quantity was more important.

#2 - portions were quite enough, although not as generous as they used to be which i thought were probably due to the price of oil spikes.

#3 - spacious. the tables are nice and big for, normally, a party of 4.

PART 1 - Cons -

#1 - lukewarm food - the foods seem to be heated up in the microwave, meaning everything is pre-prepared. Normally, single order menu items are better than their buffet versions but seeing how I tasted no difference, it was quite a rip off here.

#2 - quality was definitely not good. I'm not saying you'll get stomach aches but what I mean is the quality of the ingredients used. Sushi rice falling apart, wrong or wrong portions of rice vinegar, and overall fastfood quality japanese cuisine.

#3 - sanitation was moderately clean, some areas having moldy corners and sticky floors are common - missed a spot perhaps?

PART TWO - pros

#1 - amount of selection on the menu

PART TWO - cons

#1 - price - this place's all you can eat is very high for the quality of food you get.

#2 - quality - poor, sashimi tasted lukewarm...and there the color was wrong

#3 - presentation - not good, looked messy and sloppy compared to other AYCE

#4 - taste - this place's taste are saltier than most other places, which requires you to drink lots of water.

#5 - service - bad, inattentive.

#6 - gratuity - definitely does not need to be automatically added especially when their service does not match up to it.

I will not come here again (repeats to self again and again) but seeing how it's a convenience after a late night movie, it's very hard to not get tempted.

A Little Disappointed

One thing Taisho has going for them is its convenient location. Their late night menu at 8:30pm is a great ending to a shopping trip. Now don't get me wrong -- Burnaby, especially Kingsway has a lot of better sushi choices -- but that would require getting back into my car and driving, so... I ended up at Taisho.

My main issue with Taisho is the food quality. Not exactly bad, but most kitchen items (tempura, teriyaki, gyozas) were barely warm when they arrived. Deep fried items like the karrage and katsu looked like they were fried twice and tasted like it too -- resulting in a hard, not crispy texture. Both were also luke warm. Rolls fell apart easily and we had to send back the toro sashimi because it really didn't taste "right" / fresh enough.

As for service, our server started talking to a friend in the middle of taking our order. (We sat by the mall window and he happened to pass by and they started to have a conversation with me and my partner in between) She then later realized this was wrong and apologized... Tea was refilled and she was nice but just a little inexperienced. Wrong food was sent to our table and the wait was long for some items. I agree with others that the 10% tip is silly -- especially since we were a table of 2 not 8. Judging from the way the restaurant is run I guess not everyone tips 10% with good justification.

Value: $12.50 for the late night all you can eat menu. While this looks cheap, the menu is limited with no sashimi unless you add on 5 pieces and a pop for another $2.25. They have sashimi salad, which is a few pieces of sashimi on a bed of greens / spicy salmon sashimi (Limit 1 order each). Both weren't very good btw.

Paid $31.40 for two people (inclu. 2 pops)... considering the quality of the food, I would rather spend a few bucks more and go elsewhere.

Ambiance was good -- washrooms were clean and the restaurant was clean.

I don't mind paying gratuity but I like to decide myself what they deserve. In this case, I didn't mind paying the 10% gratuity but was offended that they thought so well of themselves that they accorded themselves the tip they didn't want to miss.

Generally, the food was OK. A bit more variety then some other all you can eat places. Also, they give seniors a discount which is a nice touch.

Not having been here in a while, and remembering a decent deal of a $10 lunch, my boyfriend and I decided to try it again. Bad idea. The hostess informed us right away there would be tip included (which, as other people mentioned, is unfair as a tip should be given at my discretion). The air conditioning was on way too high, making my food cold before I was halfway done. My beef short ribs were unbelievably dry, salty, and fatty. My boyfriend's chicken (teriyaki) was even drier. His udon was soggy and disintegrating in the soup. The california roll, green salad, and tempura were of normal standard (but who can go wrong with that??) and the service wasn't horrible. Anyway, we ate lunch maybe 5 hours ago, and our stomachs are still complaining. NEVER, EVER going there again.

After not having been there for many months now, me and my hubby decided to return last weekend. Everything was how I had remembered it. The atmosphere & food were still pretty good. Granted service could have been better, but I will give my benefit of the doubt that maybe because it was during the rush hours.

However, I was stunned when the waitress said that a gratituity charge will be added on to our bill. Since when were tip mandatory? I felt obligated and forced into it. I don't mind giving a tip if I had receive quality service, but what if it were the other way around?

After reading all the negative reviews on this particular restaurant I had my doubts about going to Taisho. However, as my son was turning six we decided to go there as he would be enamoured by the "conveyor-belt" gimmick. The warning bells went off when I called to make a reservation and they informed me of the mandatory 10% service charge for large groups (we had nine). I immediately informed them that I would not pay it as I feel fully justified in paying a tip if, and only if, the service warrants. Thankfully, they backed off.

From then on the event was positive. The decor is open, clean and inviting. The AYCE was sufficient. Mind you for the more exotic dishes they charge extra but if all you care about is the rolls, tempura, sashimi, etc., then there is more than enough. Note: in the past, I have not received everything I ordered for some unknown reason. I paid particular attention to everything that I ordered this time out and am pleased to report that everything came in a timely fashion.

As for service, yes the servers could add some personality and pizazz to their job (placing dishes on our table and continuing on without breaking stride is a skill). On a positive note, for our birthday boy we asked for some mango ice cream with a lit candle to be placed on the conveyor belt for him to "discover", and they were quite happy to comply. It was even comped.

Don't misunderstand me; this is not a classy joint. But it is a great place to take a young family (we have three boys and they didn't flinch). As for the tip: we did... more than the 10% they were originally asking.

Mandatory 10% gratuity unjustified for an otherwise decent establishment.

Taisho's in a convenient location with a laid-back atmosphere, complemented by their taiken belt and use of bamboo. Although I can't comment on their raw dishes since I don't order them, their cooked food is decent, and I've gone there many times over the years to order what I know to be safe.

However, they have a problem with service: not much effort was made to ask how our food was, or whether or not we would like refills on our drinks, be it tea, pop, or just water. Quite often the server just placed our dishes at the edge of our table and leave, as if we were some animals that were simply happy enough to have our troughs filled.

To make matters worse, they now have a mandatory 10% tipping policy, which they don't tell you when you put your name on the waiting list. There are also no visible signs to alert you of this. They only tell you when you are getting seated. But who's going to leave after waiting fifteen minutes for your table, when you're already hungry? 10% is not a big deal, but at least be up-front and honest about it. When the manager was asked about their reasons for this new policy, he replied that they weren't receiving many tips from customers in the past, so were forced into making this decision.

There are other examples of poor service on which I don't think I need to elaborate, but if people aren't tipping the servers, you'd think management would do the right thing and correct their service. Instead, they have this "hidden" policy.

How unfortunate for a once-favourite place.

...for sure, because it's in the mall near the theaters since the food is not that good anymore. I started coming here a few years ago when I started working at the mall. Back then the food was way better and so was the selection going down the moving belt.
I haven't worked at the mall for a year now but I paid a visit over the holidays and decided to eat here....what a disappointment !!!

For starters, they charged $2 extra for AYCE (holiday surcharge) but the food was no different than any other time; I agreed to pay because I thought they may have special "holiday" items...NOT. I think it's just an excuse to scam up a few extra bucks. I think they do this on long weekends too.

The food on the belt consisted of the same tired 4 items going round and round (tuna sushi, ebi sushi, tamago sushi and endamame). We saw a few salmon sushi which quickly disappeared never to be seen again for the 1.5 hrs we sat there. Only 80% of the cooked items we ordered actually showed up even though they claimed they were delivered...must have gone to a table beside us.

Next time, I'll eat somewhere else before heading to the theaters. Don't think it was worth the regular price anymore and the $2 "holiday" surcharge is a kick in the teeth.

btw, I can't remember a time when most of the tables around the belt were occupied by toddlers whose parents were not managing their kids and so they were nosing and poking at the food on the belt as it passed in front of them...next time I go for AYCE, I'll go to one of those where you order and a server brings your food.

I have been here a few times over the past few years for their AYCE, from people I know choosing to eat here, and not my own choice. Every time i have found the food universally bad, and the service rude and barely existant.

At best the sushi there is standard/ok, but usually i find it to be old and i suffered for it the next day. The cooked dishes i get are usually warm/room temperature and soggy. This goes for the tempura as well as the dons (rice bowls).

I don't think i'll be back again.. no matter who wants to go.

Tried the AYCE. Very disappointed in the tempura prawns and veggies. 1 small limp prawn and 3 veggies. Every thing else passable but table service was slow. Almost like they want you to fill up on the sushi rolls. 3 menu items per person at a time. Small portions. Might go back in a pinch but not voluntarily.
