Swiss Chalet has been serving it's fresh, never frozen, signature rotisserie chicken in Canada since 1954.
Mrs. C and I were enticed to go to SC because I was looking forward to trying the festive meal available there this month. We invited special friend A to accompany us. This SC was nice enough inside and reasonably clean, except for the disgusting w/c. Service was okay when it occurred, but really slow due to the lack of staff. As for value, my meal was really cheap, but the appetizer garlic bread was too expensive for what we got, and the meals my companions had were no bargains either. My festive meal was a little small, but tasted okay except for the vile dipping sauce. Mrs. C's quesadillas were tasty and a decent portion, and our friend's ribs were reported to be good. We also had drinks which were moderately priced.
I don't think I will be back any time soon. It was kind of depressing.
Started with ribs and egg roll appys. Not impressed. Wasn't in the mood for chicken so I opted for the burger. Wow what a good choice. This baby was big and the fries were more then ample. Service was fast and friendly. Maybe next time go in less hungry and skip the appys. Found out they have free local delivery. Will be trying that out soon. I was there for lunch and parking is a nightmare.
Ok, first of all, I have to admit that the food was decent (nothing special or anything, but just ok) except the dessert, the dessert (coconut pie) was disgusting, heck even the ice cream was not good.
Anyhow, service was just unacceptable. We came here tonight for a friends birthday (12-15 people) Ok, we understand it is Saturday evening, but it's not the first time that ither of us have had a birthday party at a restaurant.
First off, I have an SPC card that Swiss Chalet accepts and I had asked an employee what special they offer, and they told me that I get a free appitizer (IT WAS FALSE INFORMATION)
Secondly, some of us (not me) had to ask for stuff 3 or 4 times before they finally brought it.
The bill toke FOREVER
If was bad enough that it toke forever to come, and I was the first one to pay (credit card) AND they charged everyone's food to my credit card (the restaurant reversed it) but when the manager reverserd it he said "don't leave, you still have to pay for your bill: even though we were there for like 20 minutes while they were correcting this error (oh yeah and as I mentioned earlier, they didn't even take off my appitizer, even though an employee said that that was the deal you get with the SPC card) I got my dessert for free because of this hassle of the credit card thing and having to wait forever, but that didn't cut it.
And to top it off, they accused one of the guests that she hadn't paid her bill because of some mix up (actually one of the other guests paid the birthday boys bill) and because of that they thought that the other girl didn't pay her bill and tried to double charge her, and she was so upset that she cried.
The only place that was worse that this place is Bay Moorings in West Vancouver (The staff at Bay Moorings win the ultimate trophy for bad service)
If you ever see me at ither place again, then I would request that you slap me.
We would have had a much better time had we dined out at Wendy's.
NEVER AGAIN HERE!!!!! NO HOW, NO WAY!!!!!
NEVER AGAIN HERE!!!!
I had another dinner here on Valentines day and was surprised it wasn't more busy. There were only 2 parties in front of us. But then again, Swiss Chalet doesn't exactly scream romance.
We were seated, we ordered, and after waiting at least 35 mins for our food, we ate. I noticed that the wait for meals wasn't uncommon. Almost every other table had people looking almost bored from waiting so long. At one point, we witnessed a server go to his table to make a scary announcement. He told them their dinners were ready - the diners were delighted, and then immediately shot down with, "but we accidentally burnt it".
Our meals were tasty when we finally got it, but I thought the chicken sauce had too much "cinnamon" taste to it.
Luckily we had a really friendly service, but it didn't make up for points lost on such a long wait time, hence just a 2 rating for service. There were tons of servers running around, but I guess not enough cooks.
Next time I want Swiss Chalet, I think I will order and pick-up.
My wife and I had dinner here a few new nights ago. She had a strong aversion to Swiss Chalet and I really didn't have too many positive memories of it either. However, recently, I have seen the commercials for this restaurant and wanted to give it another try.
Food: I ordered the half chicken dinner with mashed potato and gravy. It comes with a bun for $10.99 and added a slice of apple pie and chunky chicken soup for $3.49 which is on special right now. My wife had a half order of ribs and fries, comes with coleslaw and a roll. My chicken was very tender, almost too tender as I don't normally like my chicken that "well-done". The serving of mashed potatoes and gravy I thought was tiny and should have been much more, as my wife's plate had a huge mound of freshly cut fries. My soup was quite good actually, just a little salty. The wife's ribs were very, very tender and flavourful and this quickly changed her mind of Swiss Chalet. She'd rather come here for her rib fixing than Montana's or Tony Roma's and at $11, the price was just right also. We finished off with a slice of pie, which my pregnant wife ate all by herself. Apparently it was pretty good.
Service: Her name was Jennifer, seemed really young. However, she was attentive and without being too attentive. Brought me three re-fills of my diet pepsi without really having to ask me. Food took quite a long time to come, about 20 minutes from the time we ordered to the time we ate, but it was nice and hot when it came. Can't really complain there.
Ambiance: Restaurant has a nice cozy feel to it
Overall: would come back again.
Eaten here a few times since my last review.
Last trip I tried their bacon and cheese burger. I was shocked at how tasty it was. For $8.99 you get a big burger, loaded with cheese, bacon, a big plate of fries, and some coleslaw. I'm hard pressed to think of a better deal in town. The hamburger itself seems high quality, perhaps sirloin, like how Milestones burgers used to taste 10 years ago before they botched them a bit. I'd give this burger a 4.5 out of 5, and rate it perhaps in the top 5 out of all burgers I've had. Way tastier than any of the garbage you get at Fatburger, Red Onion, Veras, etc. Yeah I'm raving but I'm a huge tasty burger fan so it's a big deal for me.
I still have nightmares about their chicken sauce and buns though so the average score doesn't get too high. I'll still never order chicken here. But I'll be back for a burger, that's for sure, and that's probably all I will ever eat here from now on.
This doesn't look like a fast food restaurant on the outside, but it sure seems like it, when you get in.
The waitresses are nice, but it's almost like, hurry , get out of here.
Chicken was quite small and dry for my liking. However, the burger was humungous.
Definately will not go back.
Swiss Chalet has the right concept. They offer consistently high quality fare in a clean and comfortable environment. They are like a fast food restaurant in terms of speed and efficiency, but a full fledged restaurant in terms of service and food quality. I dare you to find better rotisserie chicken for the money anywhere! Their dipping sauce is unbelieveable...I LOVE THIS PLACE!
After driving by countless times, my family and I decided to try. It's a late afternoon and not a lot of people on a Sunday. The menu was simplier than I thought. I got the rib/chicken dinner. Son got the spinach wrap and hubby got the spcial at the front page. Overall, they were all ok and better than we expected since it's not a popular restaurant in metro van. However, we realized the fries were pretty good and fresh. In fact, kids love them very much. the service was over average. She was fast and friendly, and came by to ask frequently. Just a bit delay getting our bill coz she's got a huge group to take care which was tolerable. The dessert sundae was pretty good considering they come with the meal. Overall, everything was pretty good.
My wife and my mother have similar birthdates and they both wanted Swiss Chalet. Others in the family were not so sure because of less than stellar service in the past. So we came with low expectations.
When we arrived at suppertime, we were seated quickly. They were very accomodating for our party of seven adults, one toddler, and one baby. The server made sure the toddler had a toy and booster seat, and a highchair was available for the baby.
The appy arrived quickly. It was the cheesebread which everyone approved of. It was warm out of the oven, and very tasty.
We waited a little longer for the main courses, but it came within an acceptable amount of time. Everyone who had the ribs just loved them. The chicken was nice, and the sauce seems to have improved. I had a side salad which was fresh and plentiful. In fact, everyone commented on the generous portion sizes.
Our server was quite excellent for a family restaurant. She was friendly, efficient, and attentive. Our bill came to about $180 (plus tax and tip) and that included alcoholic drinks for most of the adults. For seven adults and one kids meal, I thought that was acceptable.
Everyone left happy and agreed they would come again.
My friend and I went here for an early dinner, but I wasn't expecting top notch food. My friend order the "Spring Special" which was soup or salad to start, quarter chicken meal with one side, and an apple berry crumble pie for dessert. Salad came from a bag which she tasted. Chicken was okay eventhough it was like smaller and the fries were okay.
I ordered the chicken wrap with mashed potatoes. Chicken tasted bland and flavourless while the mashed potatoes wasn't up to par either.
Not a big fan of this place but my friend seems to enjoy it. I find their chicken is always too dry so I'll skip this place and eat somewhere
Swiss Chalet on Lougheed by Boundary had become one of the restaurants my gf and I visited quite often. In the last 2 years, We've been there about 15 - 18 times. I had once really enjoyed the food, service and value that you could get. But in the last few times that we were there, things have gone way too wrong. Tonight was a low point.
I went to Swiss Chalet tonight with my gf and her family to celebrate a birthday. We had the misfortune of getting "Hong N." as our server. She was extremely impatient and most of the time, outright, rude. While taking our orders, she didn't allow any of us to finish saying our order, cutting us off mid sentence once she knew what we pointing to in the menu. When my gf's dad had a question, Hong impatiently pressed for him to decide on an item. After our orders were taken, she felt it was necessary to grab the menus from us as fast as she can so that one of them could go flying towards my friend, fortunately missing her, but unfortunately, hitting her camera.
When the food came, she threw down the 2 plates that she had, not really caring if she got the right person or not. She did not return for quality checks until late into the meal, and when it was time for her to end her shift, she pressured us to pay, returning several times within 3 minutes to look for payment. When we were setting up the payment on the machine, she unprofessionally looked over our shoulders to see what kind of tip she was receiving. When the tip reflected her performance, she glared at us and left.
Food - 2 - Service was not the only thing that has gone downhill in the past year or 2. I loved the Summer sensation special they had last summer. But the quality of food I got this time, as well as the past few times, has been a big disappointment. Chicken was only okay, a little salty in my opinion. The ribs I got were bland in taste and dry at one end. The placement of the food was really just where the kitchen staff manage to fit it. Endless fries seems to mean fill the plate with as much as you can so no one will ask for refills. Sorry, but presentation counts too.
Service - 1 - What a joke, "Hong N." was absolutely terrible. If only I could give a 0.
Value - 2 - The prices here have gone up a bit since last year. Although not terrible for the amount you get, definitely bad for the quality you get.
Ambiance - 1 - The dining area hasn't really changed. I thought it was nice before, really cozy. The staff was really nice, and it gave the place a nice and friendly environment. Now, the staff is abysmal in comparison, the tables we got today was still oily, and the floors were, lets just say, EWWW.
Overall - 1 - I use to like Swiss chalet for all the right reasons. Good food, great service, good prices, and a clean and friendly environment. It really kept me coming back over years. But now its poor service, so-so food, higher prices, and filthy environment. The staff really needs to be upgraded. It's a shame, but I will only return here if the next dozen or so reviewers tell me its safe to do so.
It's New Year's Eve and it's been a tradition for hubby and I to go to this particular Swiss Chalet. This year two of our friends join us in our tradition.
In the past years, it was never busy on New Year's Eve but things have changed. The server was extremely friendly. We ordered our food almost rightaway. We have been waiting and waiting but nothing came out, The server came back quite a few times and letting us know there's a backup in the kitchen. It was alright for us since it's not eally his fault anyway. When the food came, our chicken was a bit dry and for my mushroom side, it was ... mini. Again, on the fair side, I never had any problem before with this restaurant and we are willing to over look this since it's New Year's Eve.
In conclusion, I will be judging in terms of all my visits instead of just one night. I would say it's very reliable and can deliver the same quality (almost) every time. Servers are always friendly. There will be more New Year's Eve to come with Swiss Chalet for us.
3 out of 4 of us ordered the chicken and rib combo. everybody thought that the ribs were made just right and the chicken was quite juicy. my dad even said that the ribs were better than tony romas'! french fries were alright. and mash potatoes with gravy was good, not too salty like most places. only disappointment was the coleslaw, it was stale. the dinner roll was warm. 1 of us ordered the chicken quesadilla which was very good. the caesar salad it came with was fine. we finished up with the caramel fudge cheesecake which was not bad at all, but it's best to share this cause it's quite heavy.
overall, outstanding food and service for the price you pay for. we all came out stuffed.
I don't know what happened, first time we had been here. We have been to other Swiss Chalet's in the past and it was great but tonight it started from the beginning. It wasnt even busy it was before the busy time of the night and some of the waiters were standing around and talking. During our ime there we had about 4 different waiters coming around us i couldn't keep track of them all. First thing that happened we ordered our drinks we ordered a beer a pop two tea's and two waters's. not very difficult i think, but no first the tea's were the wrong kind and there was a huge mess trying to get new water and she never took the old ones away. then the waiter gave us plates that had a big wad of something gross it was NOT clean. we got a new plate. service was slow. the waiters always seemed confuse, saw a couple checking phones. My mom ordered a Festive dinner or something and ended p getting basically a quarteer chicken dinner they had messed up and forgot the stuffing and sauce, never cleaning away the old dishes. the waitress came back with a plate with a little bit of cranberry sauce and some stuffing thing was the stuffing was not fluffed or anything she said it was good but it had still been in the ball shape of the scooper and plopped on the plate. at the end it was about a 90 dollar bill the food in all was not worth that money. i was like, heres the food, heres the bill get out we want nothing to do with you anymore. also the set up was weird from our table we could see directly into the kitchen and the noise the whole time was unbelievable.
Had dinner tonight at this location with my family. Very good service - refills for drinks brought without asking and food brought out in a timely fashion. We all had the chicken/rib combo and it was delicious. Server was very polite and attentive and it very busy! Would definatly go back.
I ordered the festive special today.
I enjoyed my fries, bread roll and chicken. I had the dark meat, which was juicy but it was also salty. The stuffing and cranberry sauce tasted artificial so I left them on my plate. The chicken dipping sauce was ugh...
Bottom line for me:
Good bread roll
Yucky cranberry sauce
Yucky chicken dipping sauce
Seems to have a very quiet civilized atmosphere no matter how busy it is. The food pretty much just tastes like ordinary home made Caucasian meals. Best item on the menu would be the monkey milkshake because it doesnt taste too ice creamy just the right amount of ice, chocolate, banana and strawberry flavors.
