my worst experience was on a Sunday during dinner rush. yes its busy so i had no problem being patient. i saw on the list that there were 4 tables of 4 ahead of me while i was waiting to be seated for a table of 6. i was told that it would only take 25min - 30min which was no problem until after waiting nearly 40min they started to push in tables of 2. it was very frustrating because i was next and the 3tables they used were side by side so yes IT COULD'VE BEEN FOR ME. once seated they gave us tea that was barely warm and took a very long time to take our whereas tables that were seated after us had received their food. they also forgot about our miso soups so i had to remind them. not long after, the waiter came out with a tray of food asking if we had ordered the platter of sashimi because he was pretty much too lazy to check himself. the next 15min he gave us plates of food that i had to tell him over 3 times that "i did not order that". after this he became very irritated wtih me and he showed it when he accidently spilled soup on our table while trying to pick up the finished udon bowl without apologizing. he did this twice. ive been to this restaurant about 5times and although it seems to get worst and worst. this by far was the worst experience. ive learned my lesson. if you want to eat out, go to sushi california. food comes out much quicker, in bigger potions and service is 5stars compared to this place.
This place is great and definitely the best place in the brentwood area for Sushi. Fresh tasting rolls and very decent service, plus the decor is pretty nice - so if you have time to eat-in, the expereince is enjoyable.
For those who find the long wait annoying, try calling in your order and picking up - especially during lunchitme as there are several office buildings around and TONS of business people converge on it at noon.
I wasn't expecting much when dining in at Sushi Garden for the very first time after reading all the reviews. When we got there it was jam packed and we waited for at least 20-30 minutes for a table. I expected really bad service and mediocre food but I was pleasantly suprised. Food was pretty good, the Alaska rolls were really tasty and stuff full of avocado. The service wasn't so bad either. The waiter was really nice and we got our tea refilled so many times and we didn't even have to ask it seemed a little excessive but that's a good thing.
I have been a long time customer of Sushi Garden on Kingsway in Burnaby. I bring friends, family and even business guests there to enjoy their Alaska Rolls and other great dishes. So, when I found out that they are opening a new location by my parents house on Lougheed Hwy in Burnaby, I was so excited and couldn't wait for it to open.
Unfortunately, I went there the first week of the grand opening and was rudely greeted by an unhappy waitress that did not even smile when i asked her if we could be seated.. the restaurant was half empty btw. We had to waive someone down to get service and asked three times to get our tea refilled. Instead of refilling it, she just plopped a jug of tea on the table - service with a smile? Apparently not. Not only that, the rolls tasted horrible, and the presentation was sub par compared to a Vietnamese Pho Restaurant that serves "Alberta Grade A" steak and sushi( aka Simply Delicious on Main St.)
So, I didn't want to make my conclusion in the first week of their grand opening, so I gave it three weeks and then came back. To my surprise, the service was just as horrible and the food tasted old, how could it be worse than before?
I would like to petition this restaurant to change it's name because it is ruining the original name of Sushi Garden. If it's managed by the same owner, it is quite evident that he should not be running two restaurants.
And yes, I went back to my tried-and-true Sushi Garden on Kingsway and it was great!
I went to this restaurant last week at lunch and it was fine. Food good, good value, quite impressed. Today I went with some co-workers and the service was terrible. Three of the teas were steaming hot, two lukewarm. I waited over an hour for my order of a dynamite combo while everyone else got their food. I finally said can I get mine to go (I had to get back to work) and I still had to wait another 10 minutes for it. When I complained about waiting for an hour for my order while everyone else was served I was just given a smile, no apology and was handed the bill.
I like the food but would probably just go for take out. Life's too short and so is my lunch hour.
I've dined here before, but I guess I've never been there during rush hour. Went today (Saturday) at around 2pm, got seated after 25 minutes. When I went to sit down on my chair, I noticed that there was some liquid on it so I used my napkin to wipe it. It wasn't water, but soy sauce...if I hadn't noticed I would have sat down and stained my pants. No biggie, it was really busy, maybe the server didn't see it. I pick up my menu and I'm looking through it, my hand feels sticky and I look down. There's soy sauce on my hand. I lift up the menu and there's soy sauce on the table. In my mind, I'm wondering if our table got wiped down at all.
We ordered sunomono, spicy salmon sashimi, assorted tempura and rainbow roll. The first 3 items took very little time to get there (we ordered the rainbow roll after we finished eating the first 3 dishes). They were okay, the salmon sashimi was too spicy so we asked for water. After 5 minutes when no water cometh, we asked for it again. No water for 10-15 minutes. Finally, we asked one of the servers who was clearing the table next to us if it was okay if we can order something from her (maybe they won't give you water unless you order more food, I don't know). She gave us this exasperated grunt, told us to wait in a very impolite way and marched off. She came back and said "what do you want?". Okay...it's been busy for you, fine, but all we wanted was to order more food and get a glass of water. We FINALLY get our water, but we wait 20 minutes for 1 roll when the restaurant is only at 70% capacity and it didn't look like there were that many orders. We eat the roll and we want to bounce.
We walk up to the cashier, I told her I would like to pay, and I pointed to the empty table by the wall and said "that table". She said "what do you mean that table?" in this rude way, and I said "the only table that is empty by that wall that has not been cleared, you know, the one 5 from this side". I tipped, but not 15%. I've worked in the service industry, and I always tip at least 15% but I was very unhappy with the negligent service, disgruntled attitude, and the way she practically threw my debit receipt back at me when she saw that I didn't tip 15% just sealed the deal. She didn't say bye, didn't say thank you, and this type of entitlement just proved that I should've tipped nothing instead.
I will never come back here again, and I will never EVER recommend this place to ANYONE (I actually convinced my BF to come here instead of sushi town...what a joke). The food is mediocre, but it's the terrible service and manners that just makes this restaurant a complete waste of money and time. I don't understand why there are line-ups for this place, it boggles my mind. It's like people are gluttons for punishment or something.
Food - I ordered sashimi and some rolls. The rolls were generic, not bad but nothing special. The same applies to the sashimi--not super fishy, but it didn't have the clean taste of higher-quality sashimi. The portions are generous, which I think is the main reason it's so popular? The roll size is ok, but I personally find the giant chunks of sashimi a bit off-putting.
Service - the waiter was attentive and somewhat friendly. I came at an off time, so the restaurant was mostly empty.
Ambiance - the restaurant is decorated nicely, but nothing special. The restaurant looked clean, but my table had some sticky spots that I had to avoid...
Value - I'd say their emphasis is on quantity, not quality. The food isn't bad per se, but I wouldn't bother returning.
I would normally not write anything negative about an establishment but sushi garden Burnaby service has really gone to hell! I had pre ordered some food and was told it would be ready in 15mins. I went by after 10mins. I realized I had wanted an additional sunomono salad and asked if I can add it to my order, I was quickly told by the cashier " it'll take 20mins" (scowl face and annoyed) I didn't want to wait or upset her more therefore I just paid for my original order. She then looked at my order and said "we'll you're early you have to wait" I mean seriously are u just having a bad day?! Then I said okay I will wait, she literally rolled her eyes at me and said "u can wait there" ..... Omg after another 15 mins of waiting I just took my food and left.... Seriously , can u afford to me moody when u actually have paying customers?! Leave the attitude at home...
This is easily my favourite sushi place in the city.
The good: The service is excellent, prices are cheap. Food is amazing with lots of choice.
The bad: honestly, nothing. They don't take credit card, which is a bit irritating but that's it.
Salmon sushi pizza is really good - if you're a fan of sushi pizza, this is one of the better ones with the right mix of sauce and deep-fried rice base.
Tempura is a little bland, but I usually find that anywhere. They have sushi wine called Sake available - I realize it is not for wife dinners.
One of the highlights is their spicy crispy avocado roll - avocado-topped maki with little bits of tempura inside and a secret sauce. The absolute best sushi I've ever had.
Went in on a not busy Tuesday night. Ordered Dinner for 2. Waiter repeated Small for 2 and I'd repeated Dinner for 2. Again Small for 2 said the waiter (maybe they call it differently!!!). Wife and I decided to order dynamite combo cuz our "Dinner for 2" did not include enough sushi or rolls. Instead of getting salad, chicken karage, assorted sushi and tempura udon we got 5 rolls (6 pieces each roll) and 12 pcs of sushi. WTF. We love sushi and rolls but not this many at once. After inquiring about our order, we were told we did not order Dinner for 2 but they will happily packed the uneaten food for us which they normally don't do for their customers. Word of advice, keep on repeating your order until the waiter or waitress repeats EXACTLY what you had said.
I'm not frequent customer there but been going there sometimes.
It's been ages for me to dine in thinking there service might be
slow and not very good. When I walked in there around 12, it was
quite busy but only waited for 5 minutes for table while waiting
with my sister. After ordering seafood salad and sashimi combo,
salad came fast and waitress frequently checked up on tables
to give some more tea. Usually, seafood salad is slightly greasy with
dressing and mayo but less greasy this time without mayo.
My sister and I both have small appetite and it was filling for
both of us to have that salad and sashimi combo and bill came
down to less than $16. Service was good too, and I'm definetely
going back as frequent customer..:D
Ah-mazing price values for the amount of food they serve. You wont be disappointed when you receive your sashimi; the portions are really big!! the price is amazing, not too expensive and quite cheap. The food is reaaally fast too, about 5-10 minute wait, seriously. the chefs are fast. servers, a bit rude but yenno, the food ia amzing so whatever! haha i'd come back again, any day, any time, because i particularly adore sushi. this place has a great atmosphere, great tea, big portions, small numbers on the bills, just a lack a big in service.
my favorite sushi place int he world.
i recommend the alaska roll, it's fantastic. i get it every single time. it's an avocado sushi roll with a piece of salmon sashimi on top, savored in their home made avocado sauce. and it's absolutely amazing, you'll fall in the love in your first bite!
I recently have been there twice, since it is just around the corner from my place. The food is really, really good, and the restaurant is quite new, and clean. Very nice decor, and I like the music played in the background - great sound system. The first time I went was during the week at dinner time, and the place was packed. The second time I went was during lunch, and again the place was packed. It appeared to be more of the work crowd. The service though, during my 2nd visit was so so (super slow) since they seemed to be a bit short staffed, but friendly enough. I highly recommend this place for its fresh food, clean & cool looking restaurant and friendly staff.
