Sushi Garden is a popular Japanese restaurant on Kingsway.
They are always always always busy so I always have to wait forever ...after eating there couple times .I learn one thing that is ....go around 4 pm then it will save you a lot of times.
I always order the sushi sasumi combo. there sushi and sasumi is always fresh and big !! They don't have super tasty rolls but they are cheap and filling ^^.
Overall, if you want to have a good value fresh sushi, this place is a very good choise !
The servers are just too busy to give you 5 stars service, come on !! They are human too !! give them a break !!
I've been here 2-3 times already and it is really a great sushi joint to pass by when you are around the area. Prices are decent and food is very tasty. Sushi rolls aren't the best but they are still very good. The sashimi tastes alright and comes in big chunks which I like but does not taste very fresh. Tempura is nothing special. Dining experience was normal. Waiters take forever to take your order because the place is always packed but food comes at a decent rate. The seaweed for the cones were soft which I don't like. Overall average food, cheap prices, will come back whenever I am craving sushi and am around the area.
I am a sushi lover. Been for years. Sushi of high quality three times a month will not give me room and thought for pause. They have the best sushi quality price and value here. Often the diners (like staff) is Japanese and they giove you the 'we know what we are doing we are born doing this ' look. Great date or family restaurant sure
I only made this account to say:
I AM ANGRY at some of the things other people are saying. Firstly, sure the sashimi isn't the best here, I actually never order it from experience, but don't just say this place is bad because you have only tried one thing. I love their seafood udon and all of their rolls are delish, their tempuras are pretty great too. And trust me, their service shouldn't have been the worst any of you people have gotten, right? The values are pretty solid considering what other sushi resturants charge and they ALWAYS tell everyone to go up to the front to pay the bill. What do you mean by CLEARLY GIVING THE BILL TO YOU? You have to pay up front and they give the CHANGE to you so you can leave a tip. Don't assume things if you're not sure.
I am also a regular at this place and sometimes, they DO make mistakes and the people have bad days, we're all human so we all have tempers too. Even if they do make a mistake like not call your name, you won't seem like one of those impatient people if you only politely ask, only if you yell do people think that. Don't get mad or assume you're the one that's right. Maybe you just spaced out in that one moment they called your name... Sometimes I do that and just ask whether I've been called or not. And also, sometimes they call your name weirdly and it sounds like something else I once mistakenly thought they called "Alice" when they actually just called my name.
This is some of the feedback I'm giving as a honest person and regular at this resturant, hope it helps future people thinking to eat at this restaraunt
I was just finishing work and had a massive craving for some Takoyaki. Thinking about sushi places aroung my area Sushi Garden came to mind... what a bad descision.
I had called them around 8pm and placed my order of 2 Takoyaki appetizers (I was really craving) the girl on the other end told me it should be ready in around 30mins I take a pretty leisurely drive there but still arrive 8 mins early went in and let them know about my order/paid and was told it should be ready in about 10 mins. Cool! In ten mins time I can enjoy some tasty Takoyaki! 10 mins go by and nothing. 20 mins go and I think yeah they are busy thats cool I'll give them another 10. Half hour I politely let the girl know that I'm still waiting for my Takoyaki. She tells me she'll find out whats going on for me... apparently orders got mixed up and my Takyoyaki will be ready in 10 mins and that she will come find me when they are done.
ANOTHER HALF HOUR GOES BY!!!!!! I've already witness a couple of walk ins get tables as well as placing tako out and getting order before mine. I go up and once again politely ask her whats going on with my order? She goes in to "check" again and comes back with they "burnt" them new batch coming up right now. 5 mins wait. I stand right by the cash register area and what do you know 5 mins the food comes out hahah NOT A CHANCE!!! but hey I think I'll give them another 5mins since the girl that was helping me clearly was now avoiding me by going around pouring water at every table slowly anyways.
I finally get her attention and before I can try to start a refund so I can get the hell out of there and finally it arrives. Angry and hungry is something I don't enjoy being so I take it along with their no expression sorry and leave. Total time spent: 1hr 20mins for 2 (pre)orders of Takoyaki
Worst part was when I got back to my back I wanted to calm down my craving a bit only to find that they were cold. I know they are known for bad service but I really thought a small order that was placed in advance couldn't possibly go this terrible. Never will I spend my money there again. I rather pay people to watch me jump face first into a brick wall repeatedly then give my money to this place.
I tipped zero today but I wish I could give negative tip that is take money away from the Japanese waitress. Even if you know nothing about sushi, I am sure you have an idea about quality. Quality is what Garden lacks, they lack it in every aspect. I dislike Sushi Garden now so much because of a few reasons, my buddy found hair in his sushi, I witnessed a waitress scratching his private area, and they charged my debit card extra tip even after i received bad service and bad food. Of course I refused to accept and had it recalculated. SERVICE GETS YOU TIP. Bad service got them $0 tip. The prices seem low, but you really get what you're paying for... CRAP. Head over two - three doors down. Way better service, OK food, and not a waitress that pities you.
I have eaten here a few years ago once.....everyone raved about their value, but the place was really dirty. The tables were sticky, the floors were gross.
Most recently, we decided to give it another try, not sure why, but it was on the way and we felt like some cheap and quick eats.....the constant line-ups can't mean the place is that pathetic.....WRONG......we never even got a chance to sit down because the waitresses decided to seat 3 other parties before us even though I had specifically politely reminded her just 2 minutes ago that we had arrived first and the whole restaurant full of patrons obviously saw that I was the only one standing waiting first before everyone else.
I was shocked and I got so upset that I went up and told the waitress loudly that we were first and that it's ok though, because we don't want to eat there anyways and stormed out.
What ridiculous service when they don't even care about the customers anymore....sad.
Eight of us decided to go out to Sushi garden because we got fired at work. I had been to other sushi restaurants in the city before but not for a couple of years - why not give it another chance? Bad idea. We had arrived early to make sure we get tables but it took an extra 30 mins to get a table. We ordered their appetizer which was soggy and drinks which got mixed up and some never arrived. After ordering a Japanese rice wine and sushi we again waited forever with no check-up, apologies, or attention at all. When our dishes arrived some were cold, one missing, and one just totally wrong. Their servcie.. that is not the word for it. Not a single pretty girl with legs or looks around. The bill came with additional items, plus 15% added and our waiter and management were totally unresponsive to our legitimate concerns. The manager would not come out because waitress claimed he was busy. DO NOT GO !!! WHAT A DISASTER!
Just went sushi garden with my friend today,
and this was my second time going,
first time i went, the food quality was better,
and today i went again, i had a BC combo,
the alaska roll was so watery, and wet ,
moreover, what really upsetted me was their
service! ,the waitress came and hand me over the combo,
and she accidently dropped one of my alaska roll
salmon piece on the table, and she just said '' oh, sorry,''
in a wutever way and walked away, i thought she was gonna get me
a new piece but she didn't, and after finish lunching,
i went to the front desk and asked for a bag , the waitress
just slide it on the desk, not really polite.. and after paying and got the change back i did not give them the tilt, and the waitress was not smilling at alll and just chewing on her gum, no thanks or any greetings! (although she did not smile for the whole time) , but still me and my friend managed not to give them any, they were too unpleasing!
really bad service. waitress always forget the customer's order. no tea/water refilling. the food is ok. too much sauce and taste like msg. roll is hugh; however, the rice always fall off from the rolls. can't eat without breaking up the sushi. good value for sashimi. floor is not the cleanest
I've frequented this establishment on several occasions. Most of the time by friends' suggestions. My take on this place is you go there for slaps of fish meat, chew, and get out. Everyone whose ever been here knows that service is systematically horrible. They're probably overworked, but still...a smile without the slam on the table would be appreciated. As for the food side of things, it's pretty fresh. That you can't deny. Nothing special about the menu. You go here for value slaps of fish meat - nothing else. As for taste or better dining experience, anywhere else will give you more.
Sushi Garden has only mediocre sushi (the rolls were bland and the sashimi was relatively okay.)
The service is the absolute worst. I suppose it could be because of the understaffing, but simply because it is understaffed does not give the waitresses the right to be rude. Isn't the whole point to provide good food and service to the customers?
Anyway, my experience wasn't too bad at first. We went there for a friend's birthday dinner. We didn't have a long wait, though they made us crowd into this tight corner. The menus came relatively fast, but it took forever just to get their attention.
The food came fast, but what happened next was really irritating. We had an empty plate of sushi, so it was taking up room where a sushi boat would take up space on the table so we wanted it taken away. We called over a waitress, but she took a while to respond. When she came over, it didn't seem like she understood instructions very well. We had asked her to please take the plate away, but when the boat came, she took the empty plate AND the one we haven't eaten yet. At first, I thought she was going to do something to it because she saw something missing or another but it DISAPPEARED. When questioned, she said that she had thought we wanted TAKE OUT. It was not even what we said, so it is apparent that they may need to take the time to understand instructions first!
When they were serving the sushi boat, they didn't ask us to move or anything so we didn't even see it coming from the back and shoved it right almost into the face of my friend. The point of the empty space at the side of the table is to bring food through there, not through two seats and almost into the face of a customer!
At the end, we had also asked for separate bills at least 3 times because the waiter didn't seem to hear us very well. So when we got it, it wasn't split into 3 bills. It isn't that hard to separate into 3 bills, again we asked to separate it into 3 bills. The waitress nodded her head and went to do it. ONLY to come back and ask how to separate them! Isn't it common sense to see how to split a bill 3 ways when there was only 3 dishes on it?? We had even pointed it out to her the first time, but no it took about 15 minutes just for her to figure out how to split it.
Anyway, we had brought a cake for the birthday girl and gave specific instructions (with politeness) to bring out the cake and make it presentable (ie. add a candle, put it on the plate) We even got the knife and the candle, all we needed was to light it and put it on a plate! So, we waited and they brought out the cake in the original box and plastic bag! It was so irritating and all of us were quite annoyed with the staff. It ruined my friend's birthday.
To top it all, for the bad service, we were only going to tip them about what, 2%? We paid our bills already when some glaring waitress comes back and asks about the money. AT first we thought it was too little, but that couldn't be right because we counted them specifically. As it turns out, she was complaining and being rude to us about the way we didn't tip! She dared to demand a higher tip! Did i mention they practically rushed us to get the bill because of some excuse of "shift change"?
I do NOT recommend this restaurant when you could have better meals at Tomoya or even a few sushi restaurants up the street. It made us all so angry I doubt any of our family would ever consider going to that restaurant again.
Service: If i could, i'd rate it a negative.
Ambience: What ambience?
I love all the food there especially the spicy tuna sashimi. they have large generous pieces of sashimi as well. its a very popular restaurant so expect quite a long wait if you are eating at peak hours. (its busy most of the day) too many people and too small of a shop so its loud and the servers are nice but theres too much work to be done and service gets out of hand....
I used to love going to this place before the renovation. We keep going back for the Alaska Roll and the house salad (yummy dressing use in both). The service has never been good, the waitresses always look so stressed out working there, asking them for anything seem to irrate them.
I vowed to never go back there each time I go there and endure the bad service. But I kept going back because the sushi was pretty good. My last draw was last week when they forced us to sit in a table of two for three people, it was really uncomfortable for our friend. (there were other tables available) And the worse thing was our Alaska Roll never came. We had to leave because we had a movie to catch. I've given them too many chance to redeem themselves. NO MORE! We all complain how crappy the service is, we need to stop supporting them, there are better sushi restaurants in Burnaby!!
Last week, I ordered sushi for pick-up (I didn't want to eat there to avoid the poor service). According to the take- out menu, if I ordered 2 hours ahead of time, I'll get a discount. I did just that. But when I arrived to pick up my sushi, the waitress told me I didn't qualify for the discount as i didn't mentioned it on the phone (which the menu didn't say I had to) and, according to her, I had called 30 mins ago. We got in a heated argument, but I refused to let it go. At that point, I didn't really cared about the discount, it was all about principle. Basically, she looked at me if I was a liar. Take-out or eat-in, simply bad service!
how many waiters does it take to split a $100 dollar bill? Five. How many times do i have to ask to get spices for my miso soup, plenty, how many times did i get hot sauce instead of miso soup sauce? Just one in my entire life. The food was in big portions, it tasted great but the interior design of the place made eating seem very uncomfortable.
Wife and I spent a weekend in Vancouver and based up on the reviews and proximity to where we were staying, we ate dinner here Friday evening. To avoid crowds, we came early (4:30 p.m.) and the place was 1/4-full. Sashimi seemed to be the best bet here; sushi rice seemed a bit old. Sashimi portions are big to the point of being almost too big but who's complaining? Not me! Had the tuna and salmon sashimi combo. Salmon was top notch, tuna only OK. Hamachi, unagi, and ikura were all quite good. Wife raved over the toro. We like it so much we came back for lunch on Saturday. Place was almost at capacity but we got in no problem. I agree with prior reviews for the most part but we did not experience horrible service. When it's busy they do get bogged down but this is a busy, volume place that's not "The Ritz", so this is to be expected IMHO. Don't come here for ambiance, but DO come here for a lot of good sushi for the money.
One of my co-workers recommended this place right across Metrotown for its freshness. I was not impressed. The service was very poor and rude. It was busy but there were at least three servers standing around doing nothing. When it was our turn to pay, we were not greeted with any respect. They literally took our money and shoved the change to us as if to say they're always very busy to talk to you. As for the food, it was not as fresh as it could have been. Salmon sashimi - not hard to identify what's fresh and what's not - was very chewy and flavourless. Not something worth a second visit.
After reading numerous reviews and hearing praises from friends I was really looking forward to trying out "the best place in town". After several attempts (closed for renovations/line up too big) I finally made it for lunch. The only good thing about the place is fresh fish. Nigiri were good with generous fish servings, however the rolls were awful. It is the first place ever, where I've tried a BC roll that was not tasty.
The waiters were rude and the atmosphere is questionable. The smell did not add to the experience either. Am never going back. If you are lookintg for outstanding quality cheap sushi go to Sushiyama.
This is one of the best sushi restaurants in the Lower Mainland. The sushi rolls and sashimi slices are large and fresh. The tempura is superb as well.
As other posters have said, it gets really busy at times. It's not unusual to see lineups outside the door. Even if you make a reservation, don't expect to get seated right away. But because the place is busy, you know the food is fresh. Give Sushi Garden a try today! :)
