The Soho is a pub-style old house that serves cheap beer and shows Canucks, rugby, and boxing on the TVs.
Went here a while ago and found their food barely edible. Had chicken wings which were room temperature and tasteless. Proceeded to have fish and chips. The fries were thankfully okay (but who can mess up fries?) but the fish was very fishy and I couldn't eat much of it.
I went saturday a little past noon and it was almost completely empty, yet service was extremely slow. I saw at least 3 waitresses but they seem to be in the back doing something 90% of the time I was there.
Was shown to a booth with torn seats (with tape to cover the damage) and a slightly sticky table.
Would not come back again.
Aside from special event nights (UFC, hockey game PPVs), Soho is pretty much empty. On UFC and PPV nights it is the opposite. The place is packed (standing room only, people standing and dining along the partitions), and I'm surprised the fire department has not ticketed this place.
The older Indian couple who own this place hire young inexperienced waitresses and bartenders to man the front of the house. This penny-pinching is evident in other areas as well - meatless nachos, completely turning off the heat until the place is about 40% full, and limited number of debit / cc machines.
I thought it was an okay local joint until I went to watch UFC with the boys one night. The place was rowdy, and when we went to pay before the title fight ended, they could not handle the rush. The waitress meant well enough, but she had neglected to bring me a last drink (someone had spilt it, apparently), while it showed up on the bill. She did not / could not remove it from the bill, so we had to stay an extra half an hour for the problem to be rectified. The cherry on the sundae was that the manager was unhelpful, unapologetic, and rude as well - I don't mind if someone screws up, but acknowledge it and be nice about it, at least!
Food was decent, but there are other places to spend my money and watch the game.
Not sure about the previous reviews, but personally Soho is one of my favorite pubs.
It's in a decent location (close to my work). Soho serves your standard pub fare. It used to be great value but they've recently raised the menu prices slightly. The prices are still pretty good but now pretty standard with other pubs. I've personally found the quality of food to be very good, but that doesn't seem to be the popular opinion. I'll just say that they make very good wings! Their Honey Garlic wings are my favorite. They also have some good nightly specials, like prime rib dinner for $13.99. Yum.
It's a really great place to go and catch the game. It's usually not that crowded, even on game nights. Certainly far less than other pubs. They have two large projector screens and a few smaller screens. The waitresses are friendly, but may disappear on you every now and then. Ambiance is typical pub deal, but at least fairly clean.
Recommended for catching the game or just grabbing a quick bite to eat.
Ouch. I wanted so badly to like this restaurant, but I don’t think the people running it even like themselves. I concur with the other reviewer that service is slow and indifferent. With a little effort I’ve established a rapport with one or two of the servers; you really have to make yourself part of the process of securing good service here. For example, ask for the bill when you order your final refill. Make sure you get a menu at the door before you get your table. When you arrive, walk right in and make sure someone actually SEES you.
Tuesday and Thursday are half-price wings and cheap beer days. Wings are acceptable, and arrive quickly. It’s a bargain for a quick lunch with coworkers. Other dishes are relatively good, but not consistent. I’ve had the crab cake a few times and it’s never the same. Instead of a creamy dip, it came once with some vinaigrette concoction that tasted terrible with crab – utterly weird and wet.
The patio is big and sunny; I like that part. You can watch the skytrain whiz overhead every few minutes and wave at the passengers. It helps pass time while you’re waiting for the waitress. I have one serious complaint though. The background music leaves a lot to be desired. Once they were playing some rap artist, super loud, and rife with the most offensive and disgusting lyrics I’ve ever heard in public. I complained in the strongest terms to the waitress, without actually blaming her. She got the point and seemed shocked herself, but then flippantly said, “I never listen to lyrics”. I told her she and the management had better start doing so, because in the daytime this is NOT a sleazy sports bar; it’s a restaurant for families and professionals. I was wasting my breath. The music remained. Sigh.
So why do I keep going back? Because there is virtually nowhere else to go in the vicinity of my office. I split my loyalty between a nearby pub, a White Spot, and the Mall food court. Beggars can’t be choosers.
if you can put up with sub par service, average pub like food, and "the only plus" no crowds, this would be your place. excellent deck for patio drinks on a sunny day but aside from that like i mentioned above the only real perk is the lack of customers which make a nice quiet atmosphere with plenty of space. Its unfortunate the service and food sucks so bad otherwise this setting would have great potential.
We live walking distance to the Soho and me and my wife went during the grand opening about a year and a half ago- food and service was poor with lots of salf. A lot of the food such as the fries are pre-packaged. We said we would never go again.
A couple months ago we saw the sign claiming "try our new menu". Being optimistic we tried again. Same problem, bad food; I pointed out the wilted lettuce on my burger and the waiter just said "I'll let the kitchen know". When our lunch was brought out of course we had to ask for cutlery and tell waitress which dish was ours. Same old same old.
The serving staff look like they don't want to be there. Contrary to a post below, the Hop and Vine destroys this place big time in terms of food, service, ambience, etc.
I guess we prefer quality food to black mini skirts.
We stopped by for a late lunch the other day to try the place out. It was not that busy and had no problem get a set. My friend from work said he likes the place because of the beer prices. Well we just ended up having a couple appetizers. The chicken wings were fine, not great. The service was off and on. If the bar tender happened to notice the waitress had not shown up again to see if you wanted an other drink or just wanted to look at empty glasses on the table you got an other round. We found the place so cold that I noticed the people at the next table going out to their car and getting their winter jackets, after we left we had the car heater on for the longest time trying to get our feet and bodys warm. We are sure it was warmer outside than in the place.
My friends and I have been to this restaurant a couple times during the last year the service was okay and acceptable. However, the last time we went in there around the end of Decembber 2007, the service was just horrible. The blond hair waitress seated us at the booth section of the restaurant the light was very dim and we can hardly see our menu. We asked her if she can turn the light a little bit bighter , she told us she can't do anything so she decided to bring us some candles over. Sadly , the candles didn't help at all and we still had trouble reading the menu. After the waitress took down our drinks and our appetizers, she took our menu away without asking us if we are going to have entrees later. We all sat there and complained that we didn't even other our entree yet. Later she came back and said "Oh sorry, i thought you guys are only eating appetizers." The bad service doesn't end there, my boyfriend helped me other the greek dishes that they had there. My food didn't arrive and everyone started eating theirs. 5-10 mins later, she came back and asked me what was my order? I was very disappointed and wonder how long did the waitress work there for. Because she should had ask me to repeat my order to her when she first took them down not when all the food arrived at our table and ask me again what did i order. 15 mins later, my food finally arrived, my potato looked burn under the dark dim light and i told the waitress to give me another potatoes because mine was burned. She came back giving me another one and told me that the first one wasn't burned , it was all the herbs and stuff. I was like how am i going to see under the dark dim light?
we left the restaurant without giving them much tips because of it , after this experience, i would never like to go back again.
I live within walking distance of this place, so I was hoping it'd be a nice place to eat when I feel like going out but don't want to drive/take transit.
Unfortunately, it wasn't good.
To start, I thought the booth they sat us in was small and a bit claustrophobic, it was as if installing the booths was an afterthought. Also, the light above the table was far too low, for my liking, and was putting an annoying glare on my glasses.
My girlfriend ordered coffee. When they brought it to her, they admitted it was from an old pot and was probably cold. They offered to bring her a new one if she wished. Why didn't they bring a fresh cup in the first place? I ordered a root beer, which they don't have. Why are places reluctant to sell my favorite beverage? They even admitted that lots of people order it.
Afterwards, we got an order of wings. The wings weren't bad, good amount of hot sauce. But they didn't include ranch/bleu cheese dip or any carrots or celery like most places do.
For the entrees, we both had pasta. I had chicken alfredo; don't remember the name of what my girlfriend had. The alfredo was passable, but didn't taste any better than something you'd get in the freezer section of a grocery store. The garlic toast was dull and flavorless. My girlfriend said her pasta was bland.
Like I said, I wanted to like the place, but I just can't recommend it.
I liked the food... I live between this pub and the Hop and Vine, and this one is far superior. The service however, is TERRIBLE! (The Hop and Vine have really friendly servers) The servers are more interested in talking amongst themselves than actually doing any serving. One night, my friends and I lost our server for 20 minutes and saw her dancing near the bar! Several other employees (I suspect a kitchen chef and a shift manager) came to clear our dishes, pack our remnants, and apologized profusely. We actually never saw our waitress for the rest of the night! The food was good though, fresh and large portions. The beer is cheap. $3.75 for Stella can't be bad. I go there occasionally, but only when I'm not in a hurry. Go with someone with good conversation because you'll need entertainment while you wait for service. The novelty of your dancing waitress will wear off sooner than you think. Did I mention the chairs are a little low? Any one under 5'4" will need to sit on their feet.
I read some past reviews and they were not too good..but they were old. so i decided to check the place out cause it's close to my place and the PPV game is one.. Anyways i went in there.. the hostess at the front was very disinterested in working.. but whatever.. the video screens are huge.. that's GOOD!.. there's lot's of seating witch is very good as well.. you get any beer on the menu for 3.75 a pint witch is dirt cheep compared to other bars in the area.. and the food was freakin great.. well i had the Soho burger and i was acually very impressed.. it was huge for 9.95.. and i have a big appitite.. so it was perfect for me. The waitress was nice and acomidating..but not overly(tip hungry type) witch was nice.. all and all a good time and i will deffinity go back to check out another game there and try some of the other food they got.. :-)
Well i've visited this location a number of times and each time i go there i really should know better. The only redeeming quality of this place is that you can get Stella or any draft for less than $5.
If you are going to order food the only decent thing to order is the halibut which is around $12, its a good deal.
I've ordered the hot (chicken) wings twice and both times the meat was cold, but drenched in hot sauce. Would not recommend.
Nachos, the small is essentially the same size as the large plate. Only problem is they are also served cold and stale.
Its funny cause the downtown location doesnt serve food. Seems like the burnaby location should do the same.
The waitress's arnt friendly nor unfriendly, just seem like the dont care and would rather be outside with kitchen staff in the parking lot smoking.
This place is probably used for money laundering.
And the beer and wine store closes at 8pm?
Great place to watch a game though with lots of tv's
I too live a few blocks away from Soho and want to have a cool, successful hangout in the neighborhood. So my husband and I were waiting for the opening weekend to go check it out. If my memory serves me correctly their opening was delayed but we go check it out the first weekend they were open.
Our waitress seemed disinterested in doing her job. We had to ask is there were any grand opening specials, she abruptly replied "NO".
I ordered a margarita to drink, she brings the unmixed drink to me she says sorry we don't have a blender yet.......don't you think you would notify someone of that before you bring the drink apologizing. We then order the food. Again an overpriced appy platter, which was nothing to rave about. But my husbands sandwich was a whole other story, they only had white bread to offer. The ham and cheese sandwich was small and pathetic looking so unappealing. I could have thrown the same sandwich together at home in 30 seconds that would have looked better than that.
I since have been again for breakfast which was a great meal, not very good service and there was not a single person in the restaurant at 10:30am except for us.
I was really rooting for them, I hope they get their act together before they follow suite with the Rain!!!!
I live very close to this restaurant, and was very happy to see it open because I wanted something like a neighbourhood pub nearby. Both I and my son have gone to the restaurant and were somewhat disappointed by the food. My son thought the burger was pretty bad - he could hardly finish it. Fries at a pub style restaurant s/b very good. But the fries are not very good, they are soft. The menu is very ordinary - not very interesting. But the food is reasonably priced. The sign says "House of Draught" but again very ordinary with nothing you can't get a Boston Pizza.
The service was good though. I would go back to the place a lot more if the food was better, and they stocked some interesting and different beers. May be they should become a brew pub, or bring in some micro brew beer or imported from Europe.
