Sfinaki Taverna serves rustic Greek home cooking.
I don't know if a lot of people would consider this the best Greek in Vancouver, but it's our favorite place. It's never overly crowded and we like the amibiance of the place.
I love the Keftedas (meatballs), and really haven't been disappointed with anything we've ordered here. There was one time when we went for Saturday lunch and the pita bread was hard as a brick and the food wasn't as good, but I chalked that up to the cook that was working that day, rather than blame the whole restaurant.
I like the Greek salad, and love their Caesar drinks. My only complaint about the food, if it really is one, is that they leave skins on the Greek roasted potatoes. I like them better without.
But I really do recommend the place, we really like it, and it is in the coupon book.
good food, food takes a lil to arrive....good service....no complaints but yet also nothing really spectacular. i like that its close to my house. portions are alright. decor is like every other greek place with plants and what not. i usually get chicken souvlaki, which is good here. was told the lamb isnt as great as some other places but i havent tried their lamb yet
Wow. Considering the decent to good reviews prior to this one, I decided to try this Greek restaurant. The ambiance was interesting, the placed looked kind of rustic and cheasy, but I prefer it to a more modern plain look. We were seated by the waitress, who was unpleasant and seemed to be elsewhere in her mind. The service was one of the worst i've experienced, she was a red-head by the way, because she never told us her name, all she did was place the menus, and come by afterwards without any conversational words and just asked what we'd like to order and left the table as quick as humanly possible. She seemed quite rude and snotty as well, quite a disappointment. On to the food, I had the mousakka, which was decent, but the serving was quite small. I also had the callemari, which was good. For the higher priced food than other greek restaurants, the value is just not here. The food and decor are decent here, but the service really brings it down. I hope this isn't the case with others, but this was the case with myself and i will not be returning.
There are many other better greek restaurants around this area along Hastings, pass on this, and enjoy the others.
Hi everyone... I and my two sons ate here today and had the worst food that a greek
restaurant serves... This restaurant is in the Entertainment book coupon so its two for one and that may explain why the food we selected on the menu was terrible...
first the calmari and greek salad was satisfactory but when we order our favourite greek lamb kleftico (which is the shoulder lamb) to our dismay its was a dish with scraps of lamb meat , pile of rice and half of a potato... We have been to many many Greek restaurants in the Vancouver area and always order the Kleftico which is a large roasted lamb shoulder with all the trimmings bones etc.. and very juicy BUT
at this restaurant the dish as noted had dried lamb mashed meat scraps with rice and one small potatoe...I can assure you that we did went to this restaurant before and had the juicy bone large shoulder lamb...so I think this restaurant is cutting corners and serving poor unappetizing kleftico as note here...scraps of mashed meat...
When I ask the waitress whats this and where is the juice shoulder lamb with the bones she said that the meat falls off the bones and they dish it out... I say that portion control and dries out the meat....
I will not recommend this restaurant and certainly for 17.00 a plate of lamb scraps on rice is not what I envision of a Kleftico shoulder of lamb....
There are other greek restaurants in town that served the traditional lamb Kleftico...
The lamb scraps on the dish were so unappetizing and dried up I just told them to box it and take it home ....did not enjoy eating here
My husband and I always order our Greek food from Sfinaki. We discovered it a few years ago and have been going back consistently over and over again. The food is alway great! The Greek Salad is the best in Vancouver that I have found. The Chicken Souvlaki is delicious and the potatoes are delicious. Although they have all the same items on the menu that most Greek restaurants have, everything we have tried is really good. We usually order takeout, the ambiance is a little old and outdated, but once again the food is incredible!
I returned from my vacation to Greece in the summer searching for the same authentic flavors,I found Sfinaki Taverna so I took my family to try some REAL Greek food. Until you go to Greece you will never know what the food should taste like. I would say the favorite at our table was the kalamari and the roast lamb!,, the gyros also were Devine. Reading the previous reviews I was very surprised because our experience was very welcoming and pleasant.
Our server greeted us with a smile and gave us some very good recommendations. After chatting with the staff we figure that all servers and hostess were related.
That's probably why we enjoyed the energy and atmosphere!,!!,!,
I found the food not salty or overly greasy. I loved the kalamari and the moussaka!
the portions were sufficient. Everyone at the table( went home with leftovers)
I really enjoyed dinning here with my family, they always ask me to take them back and do make an effort whenever we are in the area. 2 yrs later you still see the same staff and cooks which I take notice of considering your experience should always stay consistent.. If I had read these reviews I probably wouldn't have made an attempt however I'm happy I didn't.
Bottom line see for yourself!!
Been here twice this year and was served by the same server. She wasn't pregnant the first time though....
If you want service, this is not the best choice. We were seated at a corner table. Waited for 20 min before any service and another 20 min after dinner was all finished to get the bill.
Food serving speed was slow too.
But man, the food is pretty decent. Portion is not like a huge greek style but a good solid plate. The lamb shoulder was THE BEST around the area. And the tatziki was spicy and tasty.
Overall, if you're not in a hurry, worth a try.
Waste of my money!!
Went here with friends from school, it's just up the block from Alpha. Walked in, felt like servers were very rude, maybe racist? I'll stick with the facts though.
Food - decent portions, but not too big on flavor. Rice was salty and hard. Chicken was dry and chewy, needed lots of salt...but wait! The salt shaker was empty. Friends shared a lamb entree, lamb was raw, sent it back to the kitchen, only to have another raw piece sent out.
Calamari had too much batter on it, can't even see the actual squid
Service - seated immediately, however seated at a dirty table with rice all over the floor. Took a long time to put our orders in, and restaurant isn't busy. Thats another thing, we walk by this place all the time and its NEVER busy. I think we know why now.
Ambiance. Walls need paint and they need to ditch the ridiculous plastic plants. The inside is plain ugly.
THANK GOODNESS FOR THE COUPON.
Food: The roasted lamb shoulder was tender and full of flavor, and had ~12 ounces of meat so it was filling. Also comes with a salad and rice (a bit oily). The deep fried calamari entree was also excellent, but not as plentiful as other greek restaurants. Both dishes go for around $14-$16.
Service: Friendly and attentive waitresses who refilled my drink at least 5 times. Food was served within 15-20 minutes.
Value: Had a coupon, so can't complain. Without one, it's value is just average.
Ambiance: It's apparent plants hanging from the ceilings is a common theme at Sfinaki. Unfortunately, it was raining on the day I went, and two flower pots fell along with pieces of stucco. I was not underneath them, but I saw a table with pots above them. When I'm eating out, the only threat to my personal safety to watch out for should come from the food, not overhead.
Ate here for the first time on the weekday and what a nice surprise this place is. We had the tender lamb shoulder and kalamari dinner dish and it was done perfect. Great service and the decor was great. Its was busy but you didn't have to sit too close to other tables. The price was great and there is an entertainment coupon. Will be back in the future.
This was my first time here because it was conveniently located between downtown and SFU Burnaby, and it in the entertainment book. I had a dish with roast lamb, and it was VERY juicy and tender! The service was decent and quick. Great decor and it had a very homey feel to it.
