Not that great...still
By Bonka of Vancouver (464 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, May 9, 2011 - 1:17pm [Dine in]

I hadn't stepped into a Sammy Js since highschool...until recently. Again it was playoff game night and we were pressed to find a spot.

There is a separation here and if you sit in the dining area, expect to be some obstruction and distance from the tv screens. Not a big deal.

The menu parallels any other menu. We went with all appetizers: the sliders which were rudimentary, the salt and pepper and teriyaki wings were on the dry end, the flatbread pizza with a low brow crust that resembled too much like bread than pizza dough and the articoke dip which was probably the best of the lot. The food didn't quite meet terrible but a definite step down vs. similar outfits.

Service was a bit sparce at first but was ramped up once things got going. Nothing I'd cheer about but they were able to adjust without making mention.

After all these years, still I wouldn't make my way here..but if you're in a pinch..

Mixed bag of experiences

My least favourite thing about the kingsway location is the parking lot. It's weird and mental, and there are smelly dumpsters where you walk out. Not the greatest way to start a meal out. We pretty much avoid this location for that reason.

They serve the kind of food I like (cajun inspired). I don't like the burgers here however. I do like the rajun cajun sandwich and the cajun chicken sandwich. Also like how you can get soup instead of fries/salad. Also had some surprisingly tasty pasta here (some kind of spicy sausage thing).

Biggest problem with the food however is inconsistency. I've had a rajun cajun that was bland and dry as hell, and another that was spectacular and juicy. Perhaps varies by location/cook.

They also have a kids menu which is nice as our young daughter gets dragged out with us.

Service is generally good, however my last trip to the North Shore location was terrible. Server was an idiot, took a minute to write down a single order (I don't know how). Ordered diet coke and got coke (a pet peeve, I really wish diet was another colour!). So I say it's not diet coke, he says it is, but he goes and gets me another one. But it's still coke. Maybe they hooked the machines up backwards, but I more think the server was retarded as it fit in with everything else he did. Shortly after that location closed down so I figure they knew they were doomed and had whoever working there who just didn't care, so I discount that incident.

Sammy J's is certainly a place I'll frequent when convenient but not go out of my way to visit (too bad north shore closed).

You like it hot?

Not a bad concept for this restaurant, but if they want to stay in business, they need to brush up on their customer service skills. I've been a few times. First when it opened, everything was great. Food was good, service was good, interesting menu items like the fire and ice dessert (ice cream with hot sauce!). I went back another time for a birthday party and it was obviously the service wasn't as good. Then the last two times I went, there was absolutely none. The waitresses/hostess are all too concerned about their looks and whether or not their skirts are high enough. The food has completely gone flipside, I found nothing we ordered tasted good. One time my boyfriend ordered a drink and found chips of glass in it. It was hard to tell, as it looked just like ice. The server apologized and gave him another one. To his surprise, he found more! After complaining again, the server offered the explaination of how they use a glass to scoop up ice and maybe it broke in the process. She only comped the drink. I'm not expecting the whole meal comped, but my boyfriend could have really hurt himself! You would think they would offer a little more to get us to return next time. There's no chance I would go back.

Good place to enjoy with friends
By ChivalryX of Burnaby (60 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, February 11, 2011 - 9:47pm [Dine in]

We had a birthday to celebrate, and the birthday boy decided on Sammy J Peppers for dinner. It was a Friday night at 6:30pm and I was expecting it to be a zoo. To our surprise when we arrived, the place was only about 1/4 full, so we were promptly seated.

The menu items are your typical fare, burgers, wraps, pasta, pizza, steaks, etc. Between the 4 of us, we ordered 2 pastas, a fish and chips, and a mushroom burger, a long with a few drinks. The food arrived very quickly, and was nice and hot. Portions wise, everything was very generous, except for the seafood pasta, which we thought was a little small. The fish and chips on the other hand was huge, as most places give you 2-3 pieces, we got 4! Overall the food was good. Not spectacular, but we were very satisfied.

Throughout the meal the waitresses were very attentive. Our drinks were constantly refilled, and they checked on us multiple times. Very impressed.

The ambiance is the usual you find in places like Earl's or the Cactus Club. Nothing special, but clean and updated. The noise level was very acceptable, even with a large table sitting right behind us. No loud music here, which we thought was great. No having to yell across the table to chat.

One of the big pluses is the free underground parking. They share the lot with the CIBC in the building, and after 5pm, all the CIBC spots become available as well. Ample parking for the entire restaurant. So if you go, remember not to park on the street (which is metered parking) but around the corner in the underground lot.

Overall a very nice experience with good food, and excellent service.

Why are all the patio heaters broken?
By azn_msfyt of Delta (194 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, June 10, 2006 - 7:20pm [Dine in]

Food: Steaks/skillets looked and tasted delicious according to my friends. Calzones were packed with stuffing but needs a dipping sauce - just like how pizza needs a dipping sauce for the crust. Artichoke and jalapeno dip was delicious but portion was extremely small for the price paid - much bigger portions found at milestone's for the exact same price. Had the brownie dish for dessert - good except ice cream came melted so it had probably been sitting out on the counter for a while before it came to the table. Drinks were a hit and miss situation - some were relatively good while others just plain sucked so choose carefully!

Service: Very on and off. There was good service and then bad service and it kept alternating through the night. She kept forgetting to bring the dessert menu until my bf was just so fed up, he went it and grabbed it himself. Food came relatively on time.

Ambiance: Would have been much nicer if the heaters worked and if they did, it would have been nice if we were seated actually near it. 2/4 of the heaters were broken and we were lucky enough to be seated by one that worked but the way the tables were set up meant that only 1 person from our table could benefit - ridiculous. Patios are also too dim - couldn't see food or the people we were talking to.

There are too many of these types of Earls/Cactus Club/Moxie's types of restaurants and Sammy J. Peppers isn't much different from them. The food is nothing to write home about and waitresses are young bimbo's. There is nothing special about this place. Earl's and Moxie's has much better ambiance and service and Cactus Club has great wings. I don't understand what the concept of this place is because it sure doesn't stand out.

casual weekend get-together choice
By doughgirl of New Westminster (45 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, May 28, 2007 - 7:16am [Dine in]

Went here for a Sunday brunch. Good choice for a casual weekend get-together for our group of four, 40something-year old friends. Best part of the meal was dessert! Though selection seemed limited at 3 items, the brownie and cheesecake choices were hits. Main meal opinions varied: One guest really liked his fries, another found her lunch selection was salty, another's was expectedly 'hot' (as indicated in the menu), and I thought the "Classic Chicken Club" was good, though not outstanding (also, my bacon was not "crisp" as indicated in the menu description). 3 of 4 of us who had it were disappointed in what looked like a great caesar salad, but its dressing was very flavourless & the cheese weak. I tried the "Fruitquake" drink, and while a unique offering, I would not order it again. Servers were pleasant and attentive. Location is easy to access by public transit.

Great Place to watch a Canucks Game

Submitted Sunday, April 10, 2011 - 9:20pm [Dine in]

Went to Sammy J Peppers in Burnaby to catch the game on Saturday night with a bunch of friends and it had a good vibe. Alot of there customers dressed in their canucks jerseys seemed as I was at a bar near by the Rogers Arena . With all the TV's and Big Screens there was a great view everywhere i turned ( i also mean the servers too. Lol) You have to try their burgers they are awesome. Very Juicy. Monty Mushroom Burger is what i had and hmmmm. They could work on the drink specials but hey $5.50 a pint of Canadian isnt too shabby. But again the atmospher was perfect for my liking. At the end of the day its about saving money and having a good time with my friends. By the way the blondee working the bar is an awesome server, she really knows here stuff and most of all treated us awesome. So Kudoos to you all at Sammy J Peppers and see yeah during the playoffs

Unfortunately had a gift card and a day of shopping
By Burgerandbrew of Surrey (32 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, January 16, 2011 - 1:59am [Dine in]

Me and my bf came here because I got given a gift card for Sammy's and it's across from metro where we were doing a full day of shopping. Although we were greeted at the door nicely, the hostess looked messy (now I'm not advocating short skirts and cleavage all the time, but she looked... not put together) and barely smiled. We sat for a good 5 minutes in a DEAD DEAD DEAD restaurant and finally got our drink orders when we were almost ready to order food (coffee and water for me, and coke for him. We had too long of a day to start drinking at 11am). She scampered off right after dropping off the drinks and we waited....and waited....and waited.... ordered our drinks with a fairly disinterested server still in a DEAD restaurant (if it's busy I certainly permit off-timing, things happen). Get our grub after 25 minutes (caesar salad with chicken for him, pesto chicken sandwich with soup for me), and it is boring, bland, and my chicken sandwich was cold but i dont care at this point. 25 minutes for a cold sandwich, soup and a salad? seriously? The server hardly came by to refill our coffee, water and cokes (still dead). So when we got our almost 40 dollar bill (came to 40 bucks with a 10% tip) almost an hour after we walked it was rather disappointing that we could have made such better food at home. Hell even the sandwiches at the mall would have been a better choice!

Never coming back here for drinks, food or convenience thanks!

They're not kidding about the Hot.
By AdamBanner1 of Burnaby (2 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, August 8, 2009 - 6:40pm [Dine in]

I just started working at Metrotown a couple of weeks ago and I've been talking to some friends just made and they recommended hitting this place up for dinner after work. I'd never been but I'd mentioned my love of spicy food so the place seemed like a good spot to hit.

The first thing that hit me was the ambiance - they've got hot sauces everywhere and you can use pretty much anything they've got on display. Every hot sauce I've ever heard of was there and they're kind enough to mark the things on their menu that are really spicy.

I ordered some wings and the blackened chicken penne. The asked them to make the wings as hot as they could because at most places when you ask the hot wings to be hot they're only mild. They didn't spare the hot sauce here - these wings were off the charts spicy.

The pain was mostly gone when the penne arrived and that was spicy all over again, but nothing like those wings. My co-workers got a good chuckle, at least, but this place was amazing and I'm very much looking forward to going back.

Horrible Service
By peedmar of Surrey, BC (3 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, September 4, 2006 - 3:57am [Dine in]

Last week a few friends and I went here for a birthday dinner and it was not at all what we expected. It took them 1 hour and 20 minutes to bring our food even though there was barely anyone in the place. Our waitress was no help at all. She spent most of the time flirting with someone at the bar and had to be asked 4 times for the dessert menu. The food wasn't that great and very bland. The only good thing out of the entire meal were the mash potatoes.

The downfall is awaiting for this joint. I used to frequent this place often but not anymore. Lately the dishes keep getting smaller and smaller. the only reason i still come here once in a while is because it is so close to where i live. With HST and alcohol enforcement and add on top the downsizing of their dishes, this place is deemed to fail. I've also notice the drop in clientele. the one thing i will say is that the food still taste great but it just is not worth it anymore.

Stinky Place, Stinky Food.

First impression when I walked in... "wow, this place smells funny"

As soon as I sat down, the friends I met up with said "why did we pick this place? it got such bad reviews!" but i thought "how bad can it really be...?"

Boy, was I wrong.

I ordered the chicken tacos and first of all, the chicken was as dry as dry can be. Secondly, they used coleslaw salad (without the sauce) to accompany the chicken. WHAT? I've never had a taco that had salad before and to make it worse, the salad was gross and wilted. Normally, if food is mediocre, i will still eat it cus i paid for it and i'm hungry but i didn't even finish this. I ate the fries and few pieces of chicken and my stomach couldn't take anymore.

Please... don't waste your time, your money, and your appetite on Sammy J Peppers.

This place has underaged girls dressed up like prostitutes. I don't need to have your cleavage in my face while i am eating thank you very much. What kind of a parent allows their teenage daughter to be degraded like that?

The food is overpriced I ordered a veggie burger and fries only to find out the bun was dry and the patty tasted like cardboard. They don't ask you how everything is and act like they are too pretty to break a nail and care about you. It's a great place for single guys who need eye candy but being a girl I don't want to go there.

Nice Dinner

Had a nice time here last night. Me and my wife came in and were seated promptly by the friendly hostess (not annoyingly overfriendly may i add, can make things akward when out with the mrs:) I had the bourbon sliders which were great, pretty much what i expected and my wife had the hot wings, maybe a bit too spicy for her liking but will ask for a step down on the hot sauce scale next time (you have this option). I had a steak for my main, cooked medium rare as i requested (a treat these days) and my wife had a pasta (not sure which one) but she seemed to enjoy it and in fact took some home with her. Drinks were well put together and went down smooth, the atmosphere was jovial, and the place was clean. Can't really ask for more. will be back!!

So went to for dinner last night with a couple of my buddies. The restaurant looked a bit different from the last time we were there. It seems as though the have done some sort of changes to the layout ?? Not sure cant remember. The restaurant was a not as busy, but there was a buzz in the air. We were served by this gorgeous tall server, now I remember why i came back to Sammys. They always did have some very attractive girls wworking.. The menu chose was not too shabby. We order there steak bites and lobster rolls as appys . (they were recommanded by the server ) they were good, tasty with a zing.. Service was good, she prompt on asking us for refills . Maybe it was the fact we were 3 guys, who knows.. Dinner was very filling.. Ordered the Blacken Four Cheese Penne, Rib Tower (awesome) and Rib Eye Wrap (too spicy) .. Pricing was average wasnt too expensive nor was it too cheap kinda fit for the type of restaurant it is. We stayed for a good 3 hours, just felt right. We were never pressured to ordering more drinks (was nice she was coming by to check up on us) was never pressured to pay our bill when we decided to just hang out. It just seem as though everyone was just happy to be there ..

We ordered hot chicken and some ribs. The hot chicekn were decent and so was the ribs. Parking is ordinary and above average for Burnaby. The prices were fair and on par especially because the wait staff were really good looking and providing value. Also, after Browns one of the best places to meet serious eye candy and the waitresses are hot too. Variety of beer available. Excellent!

I'm surprised that this place is still in business. The girls did a great job with what they had to work with which was nothing. Food lacked any kind of flavour and needed every spice on the table plus some from the display to give it some flavour.

My budies and me could only say " There has to be some flavour on this plate somewhere"

Was in for lunch at Sammy J Peppers (Kingsway) We were greated by a soft spoken girl right away. Didn't have to wait to be seated, that was good.
Our server was running around but did notice us as we were opening our menu.
Overall, the service was good didn't have to wait for long periods of time between our drinks, appys and lunch. I really like that, its like they knew we were on a time line. The food was solid. We both had their Mushroom Burger and Jerk Chowder. WOW thats all I can say . One of the better burgers I have had in this style of restaurant.

Ambiance was different, with so many TV's you would think sports would be playing on every TV but this day. Only one TV was showing TSN and the rest we were all watching The Godfather with volume.. I saw people actually watching it was crazy.. Something different, not bad at all.

The experience at lunch was good overall, I cant wait to go back for dinner and see what they have instore ...

The food is good, the portions are big too. Sometimes the service can be really slow. One busy friday night, we were seated near the kitchen area and the cooks and waitresses were singing along to the music which was really annoying because who wants to hear some guy singing out of tune?? Anyway, the waitresses were mostly bending over when my boyfriend ordered, i guess they thought that they would get a big tip for their cleavage. Most of the time the waitresses are too busy trying to look good and hook up with guys than delivering good service.
But the food is good, though not too hot and they have free pop refills!
