Romana is a long established, family owned and operated restaurant in Burnaby serving up a menu of pizza, pasta and other Italian and Greek dishes.
I've ordered catering from Romana's for work and was really please with their service. They were willing to deliver from Hastings down to Marine Drive area (a 20 minute drive) during busy lunch time! I spoke and ordered from a manager/owner(?) lady and she gave such great service.
We ordered the greek luncheon for about 15 ppl and there was enough food to feed 20-25! The food was okay, but I have to say the lasagna (strange combination with greek food) was very bland and needed plenty salt. The chicken souvlaki mini-skewers were moist and the order came with plenty sides like tons of tsatziki sauce, pita and lemon wedges.
It was a great deal for the price.
Comfortable and spacious setting. Service was very freindly & attentive. Price was very reasonable. Food was tasty and portions were generous. The lamb was quite tender and will definitely go back for it. The only flaw was the baked french onion soup. It was not heated evenly - one bite cold & one bite scolding hot. Overall, nothing spectacular but it's hard to beat in this economy.
When we first moved to Vancouver we were sooo tired after a long day of unpacking we hopped on the 135 from SFU and randomly got off on Hastings. We glanced around at our new surroundings and saw Romana. Our first memories of moving to a new city, starting our lives together, opening a new chapter... began in this quaint little restaurant. We were the only two dining that evening at 8:00pm and the romantic feel of the restaurant was present. The server was an older lady, very friendly and she was not working just to receive a tip...you could tell she really enjoyed being there. We had Kalamari ($10) and house wine ($6) to start...perfect pairing and extremely delicious. My boyfriend ordered the 'classic' pizza for $13 and I the Melizano Piato for $15. I'm not lying when I say that this was the best meal we have had in years!! We were nervous for the bill since we felt like we ate beyond our budget, but walked away spending less than 50! For special occasions or even just to reminisce we always return to Romana. We will truly miss this restaurant when we move.
It's family run and the people are friendly. The server was new but did fine.
The food was good but too expensive. You can get better for less in many places elsewhere.
The issue is the restaurant itself. Apparently they've been there for 30+ years and clearly have done nothing to update since. The place smelled dank, floors were dirty, tables were small and shakey. Everything was just old and in need of a massive overhaul. Perhaps they think it's quaint. It's not. We won't return.
What a treat to have a family owned & operated place like this.
Friendly service welcomes you in like an old friend.
Typical menu that blends italian & greek favourites. Excellent salads; I love their pizzas (great crust & fresh toppings).
The homemade tiramisu is spectacular and a large portion for two.
Nice decorating; the candle display is very interesting.
Under $75 for two with (decent) house wine.
Would love to see huge lineups like ANTONS and larger Lamb portions like Knight & Day [much as you can eat]. Every interior table full to capacity, happy contented patrons in this old Greek family run establishment on Hastings 4600 block !
Have ordered dozens of Pizza dishes over the past 30 years and probably more in the future.WOW the money I have ploughed into Romana for food, must be a fortune !
I've been coming to this restaurant for years and am surprised that there are not more reviews of this restaurant. Romana's been in North Burnaby for over 36 years- the oldest independently run family restaurant restaurant in Burnaby.
I'm giving the food rating a 5 because the Kalamari is perfect. I don't know what it is, but you have to taste it for yourself and compare it to other restaurants. They cook it just the right way where there isn't any grease and it's just light and fluffy. their meat dishes are very tender and succulent. Most of their meat dishes would fall off the bone if they were still attached to it. (I had a chicken dish from their 1973 menu and my friend had the chicken souvlaki.) And the dessert just melts in your mouth. I would highly recomend the eck mech.
As for my 5 rating on the service, this is all because of Poppy. The owner serves you with a greeting like any old friend would. It's no wonder why this restaurant has been around for 35 years with Poppy at the helm. i would doubt many restaurants would have that consistency of service over that long of a time frame.
For the quality of food you are getting, I think that pricing was very fair. You are paying for a quality meal, with decent sized portions. Most dishes are priced appropriately based on my comparison with other restaurants. The Calamari, I first thought was slightly above average pricewise until I noticed that all they have on their Calamari dish is lots and lots of squid. Every time I buy Calamri somewhere else, they use a lettuce leaf or other vegetable to dress the dish so that there is fewer squids. This place doesn't. They just give you a heaping full of perfect Calamari.
As for the ambiance rating, it could be described as a traditional mediterranean restaurant. The candle lights and old world tavern feel is accented by the colored masonary walls and floors make this place feel like you're in another part of the world-one with beautiful ocean beaches at night.
