Pure mediocrity, no reason to go.

This is just another HK-style tea restaurant. There's really not much to say here.
The decor is a little bit better than average for this type of restaurant.
The service is okay, just what you'd expect for a tea restaurant.
The food? Yeah, pretty much what is expected here too. I mean, it's alright, but it isn't super cheap and I see absolutely no reason to waste your stomach space at this place.
And my gosh ... do they ever load up on the MSG ...

There are better places to plunk down your money to satisfy your tummy.

Stumbled upon the Pittsburg while killing time in the mall. We thought this restaurant may have been a new addition (later turned out it was around for a while) so decided to go in for an afternoon snack and tried the beef fried rice noodle and sweet and sour pork. We didn't really enjoy the food as the rice noodle was very salty, with a hint of fish sauce or something that was "off" in the dish. Normally, a basic soy sauce base would do for this simple dish but I think they tried a little too hard - the result was one of the worst "gon chow gnau haw" (beef fried rice noodle in Cantonese) I've ever had. The sweet and sour pork was better but again, had a very odd taste to it. Maybe I'm not used to this style of cooking, but definitely don't think it's HK cuisine.

The ambiance is similar to many HK style cafes - no frills, but clean enough.
Service was ok - nothing out of the ordinary but our order was taken and served in a fairly timely manner.

Value wasn't really there for me because I didn't enjoy the food. Will not be back.

It's really becoming the pits!

I hadn't been to Pittsburg for quite a few years. It used to be a half decent place to eat. Nice decor. Decent Food. Ok prices.... Not anymore!

The place was dead on a Saturday evening around 6:30pm. The strong smokey smell of oil is in the air, and the loud whirring of the air conditioners was obvious.

Service here is still decent. The servers are polite and efficient.

The prices have gone up by quite a lot. You pretty much can't get any food for less than around $13 or so, and if you want Soup, Drink, and dessert, it'll cost an extra $2-3.

The food has gone down the drain. We ordered one Penne in Seafood Alfredo sauce, and one Fried Kuay Teow noodle. Both were extremely bland, and the "Alfredo Sauce" was nothing more than cream sauce. Not even a hint of parmesan cheese. Portions were mediocre, but not tiny. Certainly not worth the prices though.

The only saving grace was the soup. The cream soup, was quite good.

Overall, stay away from this place. High prices, terrible food, noisy fans, and smokey smells.

I haven't been to Pittsburg in a while and was surprised to find everything had gotten worse. The only good thing, though, was there was no more line-up, even on a weekend. But of course there is a reason for it. The beef ribs dish I ordered was greasy and somewhat tough. A couple years ago they did the same dish much better at a lower price. I do understand when costs go up and restaurants have to increase their prices, but please at least maintain the same quality and quantity. I hope the owners read these reviews and do something quickly.

too expensive for average HK cafe food

Went to pittsburg on a wednesday evening for an early dinner. I tried their baked seafood with alfredo sauce on rice, and my friend tried their baked porkchop with tomato sauce on rice.

Service was pretty decent, food arrived in a timely manner and had no problems getting more tea. The place was reasonably clean, although a little strange looking.

The problem was the food. My friend's pork chop consisted of at least 50% bone or fat. most of it was uneated. It came with a large amount of fried rice with egg. My seafood baked rice was decent, but the cheese was past its prime (though not bad). It came with a drink, soup and a small almond jello, and came up to over $15 a person before tax/tip. This is quite expensive if you compare to other HK cafe type restaurants in the local area. I would not be back, as it is almost double the price of similar places.

Service not expected from an HK cafe

Food: I had the seafood fried noodle with XO sauce while my dining compadre had the japanese fried noodle that comes on a heated plate. They both came with the same noodles and unfortunately the both tasted the same as well and both had an overload of bland cabbage. Ice teas were good. Prices were also higher in comparison to other HK cafes.

Service: Surprisingly good as they refilled waters, brought teas right away, brought waters right away and food came in a timely manner. They were also quick with the bill as well. Much better than other HK cafes we've been to. Easy to follow menus but not as extensive as I would have liked.

Ambiance: Questionable use of red crush velvet in the booths but comfy nonetheless. Reasonably clean in the restaurant area with a typical cafe feel to it. Washrooms were questionable... avoid if possible.

I may or may not return - the prices are higher than other cafes so I might try to shop around Burnaby for other cafes before returning to this one. Overall, ok -not the best but not the worst. I would only recommend this place if you're willing to pay the extra bucks without the extra bang - I would only come back if I were at Crystal Mall and were too lazy to go elsewhere.

Better than expected

Mrs. C and I were getting our Crystal Mall fix when we saw this unfortunately named restaurant. Having once been to that nasty coal town, I was a little apprehensive!

We were seated at once by the friendly manager, and studied the extensive menu. I had the curried beef brisket combo, which came with dong cafe, borscht and dessert. Mrs. C had the seafood fried noodle with XO sauce.

The curry was fantastic, but the borscht needed beef. My dessert was tiny but flavorful. The iced coffee was perfect. My beloved dining companion marvelled at the excellence of her noodles. As a previous discerning reviewer remarked, the service was very good.

The ambience was a sort of industrial disco theme, but comfortable. The w/c was clean, which was a nice surprise. If I had one complaint it was the price, which was much higher
than comparable HK Chinese restaurants.

Next time I will eat one of the specials, since they aren't so crazy expensive.

Pittsburg offers set meals during lunch rush and from 9pm to close. With offerings from east to west, it's a great place to go for a cheap lunch/dinner. Items ranging from pasta to rice dishes to snacks combined with a drink will only cost you about $8. For a full meal, add a bowl of soup (cream or vegetable) for an extra $2. The service is usually good. One server there (manager?) is especially kind and friendly.

I haven't been here for quite some time now, and when I went back, it was disappointing. The servings were getting smaller, the quality was diminishing, and the place is getting more quiet. The value is also getting worse. The best thing about this place is the fact that they have a TV to preoccupy you from their lack of good food. I would not come back if I were given the option.

Honestly, don't bother coming here. It's your usual Hong Kong style cafe with just barely mediocre service. It's overpriced and the food isn't good. I remember ordering a fried rice item from here.. it was just okay. Plus they added dried shredded pork on top of it.. which made it taste really weird. Nothing special at all, nothing new on the menu from 54th Ave restaurant or Honolulu (maybe Pittsburg has fewer items). But yeah, don't waste your time here.

food:
rack of lamb + baked basa fillet w/ spinach alfredo sauce
seasoned prawns w/ curry rice
food wasn't bad, it for sure wasn't regular HK style cafe level

service:
when i arrived, it took the waitress a little while to realize i entered the restaurant, but after that, there wasn't any real issues with service

value:
its true that the pricing for the items in the menu is slightly higher than your average HK style cafe, but i believe that only really applied to the regular items. once you go up to the more special items such as the steak combos and the chef's specials, you'll find that the price are more justifiable

ambiance:
i can see how pittsburg might have been a trendier looking place when it first started but the decor has become a bit weathered over the years, so if they expect the customers to pay at a higher price point, the entire eating experience might have to be amended

conclusion:
first and foremost, i don't understand why the other reviewers here are reviewing about the regular items that you could eat anywhere, although i must admit the regular items are not their strongest suit, especially being priced higher than the competitors. i think that if you gave pittsburg a chance and try some of their specialty items, you might find that its not all that bad

Pittsburg has gone downhill
By yummm of Surrey (36 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, September 13, 2009 - 3:19am [Dine in]

I used to frequent this restaurant all the time for their reasonable prices and delicious food. However, their food has definitely gone downhill and I actually try to avoid going there as much as I can now. They increased the prices but forgot to also improve quality of food. I used to order their curry dishes all the time but after several disappointments, I started ordering other dishes such as pastas and sandwiches. Was not impressed the last few times I was there - hence I have stopped going. One dish that I found decent was the Hainan chicken, everything else disappointed.

Too bad as this restaurant has so much potential, nicely decorated and conveniently situated inside the busy Crystal Mall. Many of friends who used to frequent the place have stopped visiting as well, for their higher prices and lower food quality compared to the past.

So this is an unfortunately named restaurant. Food is what you’d expect in these kind of cafes. I like their soups, they had a borscht that was tasty. The rest of the food is typical, underwhelming at best. Service is decent, efficient. Underground parking is a bit of a guessing game sometimes. Probably won't be back if I can help it, but it's open late which is nice.

Well, it used to be that HK style cafes were places were people can go to get a quick bite without having to break their wallets wide open. It's not the case anymore and definitely not the case with Pittsburg Cafe. Well, if the food was actually any good, I would mind going and paying but if the food was not good, and the service wasn't either, then I don't see any reason for going to waste my money.

Glorious Hainan Chicken
By Hardip of Vancouver (6 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, September 13, 2009 - 3:10am [Dine in]

I tried the hainan chicken which was Glorious. There was a layer of gelatin under the skin, the meat was succulently moist, and the rice not only tasted like chicken broth but was greasy as its Chinese name ("oily rice") suggests. Fab! The only negatives were that there was only one drumstick (laterally chopped in half) and the veggies were overcooked with oyster sauce just poured on top. $9.95. 9/10.

This is the worst restaurant ever.

Food: I ordered some seafood noodles with an annoying ursula thing. It was so disgusting I can't resist it. My family planned that we'll never eat this restaurant again unless we ran out of ideas.

Only the worst thing about the restaurant is that the disgusting ursula noodle thing can charge you 15 dollars!

Very good consistent food for a good price!

Service is also pretty good too, they don't rush you to finish the food - usually don't have to wait too long.

I would suggest anyone who likes HK Cafe to go there.

This restaurant has definitely gone downhill over the past few years. It is showing with so many empty seats on the day I went there. I haven't been here in a couple of years and it is worst than the last time I was here. The food is more like food court quality than anything else. The service was non-existent. I wonder why I didn't just go to the food court upstairs to eat the same thing for half the price. the only thing different is that up there I would get the food in a paper plate with plastic cutlery. Down here I'd have a real plate iwth metal cutlery. as for the food, it tasted the same.

Talk 'bout bad service

I wandered into this restaurant not knowing what to expect since there was no one inside on a Friday night around 630pm. The hostess/waitress who was behind the counter failed to see us for at least five minutes. We were not seated until the manager came out to direct us to a booth seat. So, we had a bad first impression of this restaurant already. After ordering Asian dishes, we were not given proper utensils to suit our meal. When we waved at the waitress for chopsticks she told the manager that they had already ordered and that they did not need anything else. I was so offended that I made a mental note to never return to this restaurant again. When the food came, it was mediocre, nothing special. I would recommend other Hong Kong cafes in Richmond instead of this one.
