Stopped by this place today Sunday December 18, 2011before dropping off my daughter for work. Just wondering, how would they keep everyone happy. The food we ordered tasted horrible and you can easily tell when it's reheated and not fresh. The chicken was tough and dry it's like the meat was a leftover from yesterday and been sitting for hours. The broth was nothing special and too bland, their spring rolls tasted awful and greasy like chinese spring rolls. So we ended up spending way too much money. Vietnamese food is very familiar to us. There's really no point in coming to this restaurant again. It's not good and definetely not authentic. Just get some popcorn or Fries across the street at Wendy's save your money instead!
I totally agreed that the staff are not friendly. I don't think they know how to smile. The booth seats are dirty and not the prettiest decor.
We go here often cause my kids love the Pho.
We were there on a friday night because I didn't want to cook. My son has a nut allergy and order the lemongrass chicken with vermicelli . We know that they sprinkle peanuts on top of this dish.
We told the waitress that he has a nut allergy and don't put nuts on his dish. She didn't really seem to acknowledge that I had made that statement. So I said it again and she nodded her head.
Our meals came and my son started to eat his food. After a few mins he started to feel tingly around his mouth and lips. He stopped eating and we asked the waitress about the nuts and she said, NO NUTS.
My son traded his meal with my husband. When my husband took a bite he found a peanut in the food. Asked and showed the waitress and she was "shocked" to see the peanut! She didn't offer a solution. So we asked to order another pho. At least we were not charged for the lemongrass chicken meal.

I go there often and simply love the pho. The place is dingy and the servers never smile, seems more like an assembly plant. But the food is beyond this planet..........I usually order spring rolls a chilled beer and the no 2 which I think is spicy broth and lean beef, you can add tripe if you want to and meatballs too..........
We are regulars at Pho Hong. Despite the dirty seats and dingy ambiance, we like the food. If you can look past the worn out decor and unfriendly bordering on rude service, the food is quite good, especially compared to other choices in the area. We usually get the deal with the large pho and spring roll for $8.50. Not a bad deal, serving size is really good compared with other restaurants nearby. However, I can't stress enough you have to look past the dirtiness - many times I've had caked on food on my tea cup or greasy chopsticks.
Dropped in this Sunday evening because of all the good reviews in Dinehere. Everything okay but nothing special. The broth not up to scratch as compared to other pho joints. Too cloudy and bland. Prices seem to be lower than others and I liked where you could order sides such as bean sprouts, more meat, or noodles for $2.00. Observed the staff at work, efficient but not a smile amongst them. All had that dour and grumpy look. Passable but for me it's the Pho Hoa 4 blocks west.
A previous reviewer called this the best pho in Burnaby and I have to agree. After a long absence from town the first thing I needed was a big bowl of delicious pho. I was not disappointed.
I had the BIG pho with beef brisket and my beloved dining partner had the small pho with brisket and tendon. The beef was tender and tasty and the broth had a distinctly beef savour, and no MSG that I could detect. Best of all were the noodles, which were slightly chewy and cooked perfectly. I Also enjoyed a spring roll, which was about a 7/10.
The decor is a bit dingy and could use and upgrade. The staff are all business and not exactly what I would call friendly, but I came to eat, so the ambience wasn't a huge issue. If you focus on the superb pho, this is not a problem.
After trying this joint twice in 2 days I can say this is a good place for a pho.
Pho Hong is by far my favorite place to eat Vietnamese food in Burnaby. Although they have many items on their menu, my favorite is definitely the Bun Bo Hue (sp?) which is the spicy pork rice noodle (spaghetti-like noodle). Other items I really enjoy here are the chicken rice dish, spring roll w/ vermicelli, and obviously the pho. Everything is under $10 and there menu includes tax.
The ambiance is a little dark (it used to be an Italian restaurant) and beware if you're heading there for lunch on a workday. You'll return to work smelling like onions and broth.
If one wanted to swiftly dine and in the mood for pho at a cheap price, this place would be my recommendation.I ordered the pho dac biet, and it came out very quickly. The amount of meat can be more, but no complaints overall. Service was uninspired, unattentive, and the vibe from the servers can border on "hostile" at times. The interior is quite antique and boring, but the seating is comfortable enough.
I have been eating here for the past 10 years or so. I enjoy the vermicelli and the spring rolls and my partner enjoys the pork and rice dish. That is pretty much the only reason that we return there time and again. This place offers quick, cheap and tasty Pho and that is about it. The service is abrupt and not attentive. No one is refilling tea at all during your visit, so you have to ask. The dishes are at times, not clean and the restaurant itself looks like a left over set from a porn version of the Godfather movies... Weird! This place is also not terribly clean. Actually, if I hadn't been coming here for years and had just walked in as a new patron, I would probably turn around and walk out. That being said - the food is good and that is why we go.
Don't know why people still eat here. The soup is so thick with msg that no amount of water helps. Price is cheap, but so are other pho places. I tried when they first opened. Too much msg. Tried it again recently, hoping they'd improved. Nope.. same recipe. Really too bad.
Okay, so I am on a mission to find the best bowl of bun bo hue. I used to eat at this pho place quite regularly when i worked in Burnaby and had previously stated it was the best pho place in Burnaby and I still stand by that comment. However, I had never eaten Bun Bo Hue until last week.
I ordered the large bowl, and once again, the restaurant did not disappoint...it was a huge bowl. Loaded with noodles, cooked just right, not too mushy and not too firm. The broth seemed quite oily and had lots of spicy looking bits floating in it. It was loaded with beef brisket, pork slices, vietnamese ham and beef pork balls. No pork knuckle or blood here...
When I went, it was 10 am and it just opened, so I was the first one there. It took a while for the bowl to come, which normally comes within minutes when it is busy in there, but that's okay, the wait just made my dining experience even better.
Overall, i would rate the bun bo hue here at 8.5/10. I know this actually ties it with Pho Tau Bay in my previous post, so how can two exact scores produce a 1st and 2nd place???? Errrr....I don't really have a good explanation, so I'm not going to try to give a bad one....just go there and try it for yourself and you'll agree.
Food:i had the small #10. decent size for a small. tendons, tripe, brisket was good, but there was this fatty flank which i didnt enjoy too much. i think next time i just wont have the fatty flank. had the pork/shrimp salad roll which was kinda bland had it not been for the peanut sauce.
Service: typical. nothing extremely bad nor outstanding.
Ambiance: decor is a little strange b/c it use to be a greek restaurant i think but doesnt bother me.
Overall: the pho was pretty good except for my choice of the fatty flank. i'd come back for the pho should i be in the mood.
The pho here was good. Excellent broth and noodles, meat was a bit tough. Service was there. However, the place is a dirty dump. I don't mind a bit of whatever here and there, but this place is covered with a sheen of grease that bothered me throughout my meal. I couldn't even bring myself to look at the banquette, but I know it was moist and sticky. I know, if a place is a dump on the outside then the kitchen must be as well. Probably right, but we were committed to the meal and too hungry to be bothered to leave and seek out another.
I've given this place a fair shake, I've been here maybe four times, but it's deteriorated to the point of no return visit by me.
Server is quick to take your order- too quick I'd say. The last few times I've been there, they come up to the table almost immediately after you sit down. Then they come back to try again 2 minutes later. Then if you still don't give them an order, they leave and forget about you. Luckily it isn't too hard to wave someone down. The food comes out very quickly. The pho soup is amazing- the large bowls are $6.50 and you get so much food and it is so tasty. I think the spring rolls are great too. Decor could use some updating
Pho Hong was used to be my favorite Vietnamese restaurant. But not anymore.
I have gone back a few times recently and the quality has been down the tube. A few years ago you would expect very generous portion of pho with a lot of meat, and very tasty broth for the pho.
Now this no longer holds. Portion is mediocre as best. Quality of broth is no longer to be found.
Even Vietnamese chain like Gold Train Express and Pho 99 serve way better pho than here. So sad.
The pho is really good especially when you consider the options in the area.
The service is minimal, they point you to your seat, you place an order it gets brought to you and you go up to pay your bill. I don't mind it, because i go for the food and the conversations with the people I'm with.
I don't recommend this place if you are looking for good/great service or ambiance. I do recommend if all you want to be left to yourselves to enjoy pho.
Went here on a monday afternoon for my usual fix. I have been going to this location for years now so it is my go-to pho place during the day.
Food: The pho noodles and the meat is always decent, not bland nor too plain. I love the beef soup broth. The spring roll I get always crispy, not too oily.
Service: Average service, kinda hard to wave down a waitress if the place is packed but normally it is ok. Funny how you have to go up to the front to pay your bill instead of the waitress giving it to you at your table.
Value: Love their daily special of a large bowl of pho and 1 spring roll at $8.50. Can't go wrong with this price at all.
Verdict: Will always be a patron at this pho place. My rating is 8 out of 10.
If you're in a rush, I timed the delivery from ordering 2 bowls of pho plus springroll to the table on a Sunday night at around 6pm. 3 minutes!! That's including the time it took the waitperson to walk to the kitchen and drop off the order.
The pho isn't spectacular. The noodle is forgettable and the soup's just very salty water with a bit of broth. The meat is decent though and I quite enjoy the beef tendon and omasum.
The portions are about right, prices include taxes at $6.50 small and $7 large. Quite a bit of Thai basil they give you as some places really scrimp out.
Service is always great-- very prompt! Get a table right away, tea and utensils are ready and good attitude considering a pho place.
All in all, I'd recommend it if you're in the area and need a quick meal.
I first at a bowl of pho at Pho Hong in 1999 and have been going there ever since. I eat here with my family at least once a week. They soup is very good and so is the lemongrass chicken and beef. I have introduced this pho place to a lot of my friends and they have all become regulars.
