The title says it: the BC roll was lukewarm - yuck. The Osaka roll has half-cooked salmon slices on top. The tempura had heavy batter, probably because it was made some time ago and just reheated before serving. I had heard some good things about this restaurant prior to visiting, so I was genuinely surprised when I walked into an empty place. For the whole duriation of our meal, ours was the only occupied table in the restaurant. And we did not go there at some odd hours. It was about 12:40 when we arrived. The restaurant itself is very clean and spacious, and has a lot of potential. Hopefully, it's just an off day for them, but for me, I don't think I will be returning anytime soon.
After moving to a new place I had a hard time finding a decent sushi place around Kingsway. I'm so happy I found this place. It's cheap, the restaurant is very clean and the service was great. Both the maki rolls AND the rice bowls were really good...which is hard to find. I just wish I remembered to grab a take-out menu! There isn't very much online about this place. I'll post a menu next time I go!
Was feeling stressed out so needed a girls night out in the middle of the week. My friend told me that she'd recently discovered a little gem of a sushi place, so we decided to check it out. What a gem it is!
I noticed right away that it was very clean and the layout was welcoming and warm. The server was friendly and we got seated right away. It did take a wee bit to get our menus and teas/waters, but it was actually fairly busy with quite a few walk-ins coming in from both doors and we were there around 6pm.
My friend warned me that the portion sizes were fairly large, but I didn't realize how large they were until they actually reached the table. There were three of us and we ordered a caterpillar roll, Osaka roll, combo #4 (a vegetarian roll combo), crunchy roll, miso, vegetable tempura, shrimp sunomono, and agedashi tofu. The agedashi wasn't advertised as spicy, but the waitress said that she'd make it spicy for me. What was also nice was realizing that they didn't charge me extra for it when I got the bill.
The food was very good. The miso, tempura, sunomono, and agedashi tofu were what one would typically expect, although I was pleasantly surprised with the portion size of the agedashi tofu. Normally for $4.50 you get four or five pieces. In this case, there must have been a dozen pieces of the average size and it was still nice and hot and crispy when it came to the table.
I think the total bill was around the $40, but we had enough to bring home for my very hungry hubby and for the next day as well.
I've since been back for take out for my sister-in-law's birthday and I will be back when I have another sushi craving. Well worth going to.
Went here with hubby sans baby for a nice romantic lunch.
Didn't expect good sushi in Burnaby, but was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant.
Ordered the following:
agadashi tofu - YUM! Cute little bite sized pieces, excellent sauce, more tofu than expected. Great value!
sashimi - fresh and tasty
special rolls (one was with eel and another with salmon tempura) - both were exceptional. Great flavour combinations!
Staff were attentive and prompt. Sushi chef was friendly and cheerful. Restaurant was clean and had nice decor and booths.
Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience. I would definitely come back.
If you want great Japanese food at a great price, try this place! There are lots of tables for eating in and everything is clean and orderly with very pleasant staff. We have only done take-out so far, but were impressed just walking through the restaurant. The food is delicious. So far, we have only tried gyoza, bento boxes and tempura, but have not been disappointed. We have tried a number of Japanese restaurants in Burnaby and have found this to be the best food for the best price. We are definitely going back.
I have passed by this little restaurant far too long. I have to admit that I did not expect much from this neighborhood and did not expect much of Osaka Island. I was wrong - on both points. Twice within the past month we have ordered take-out dinners, and will again! The food is fresh, nicely prepared, and tasty. We ordered Bento boxes with beef and with chicken, and were impressed with the variety and amount of food it included. The Bento box includes some tempura, and we ordered extra this time because we enjoyed the freshness and crispness of the vegetables so much last time. We are not in this for the sushi, but did enjoy the California roll that came with the meal.
The restaurant is clean, and the staff friendly and efficient. It seems to me that they offer an unusual number of authentic Japanese dishes in addition to all that sushi! They offer a 10% discount for customer pickup. They do offer delivery within their guidelines.
