Worst Experience EVER!
By DinzOut of Burnaby Canada (1 Review)
Submitted Monday, March 4, 2013 - 10:12am [Delivery]

So... I've been ordering from On On for the last 10 years or so I would say. I am NOT a complainer... But with yesterdays poor service and lack of customer service, i just had to share my experience.

Ordered:
Spicy Spareribs
Crispy Noodle - Chicken Chow Mein with Vegetables
Vegetable Chop Suey.

Ordered delivery at about 6:45. Food arrived at 730 as stated. When we sat at the dinner table we noticed that the Spiced Spareribs were not fully cooked and the Chicken w/ Vegetable Chow Mein was not crispy as we had ordered.

The Chow Mein we could deal with. But serving raw Pork is a No NO!!!!

My dad called On On - Spoke to the lady who answered the call. We explained our disappointment and was told by the lady... That they are not to blame and the reason we got soft noodles is because we must have ordered the wrong item. Well ... I've always ordered the same items from them... so to make it sound like i ordered the wrong item was insulting. Fine. No cripsy noodles. Got that. But her explanation for the spareribs... There wasn't any. No acknowledgement of serving under cooked spareribs. Not even a sorry... or we'll give you a credit. Not even the option of us taking back the spareribs to have them replaced. Nothing. The lady on the phone was rude and unprofessional.

I will NOT be ordering from On On again... And this rant is just the start of my fury! I will be letting all my friends and family know NOT to dine there... Needless to say the my $30 for dinner was wasted as well as the spareribs being tossed in the trash. Could you blame me? Would you eat under cooked pork?

Terrible food and double charging

My family and I went there the other day, figuring it was later in the evening and everywhere else in the area had a huge waiting list. Boy, I will never go there again. Not only was the menu greasy but the furniture had been worn down so much It screamed replace! food wasn't any better, the sweet and sour pork was saturated in starch and grease. Think of it like trying to win the lottery, you just never knew which piece actually had meat. The fried rice wasnt' any better, we had to down it with the tea that we had because it was so hard it tasted like yesterday's and then some. Figuring we made a bad choice and it happens? I gave a tip when the bill came and shrugged it off as a bad experience, until i saw my credit card bill and noticed they charged me twice and both times a 15% tip. I called the manager and he downright refused to refund that, what kind of self respecting restaurant steals people's money? seriously!

You get what you pay for... almost

Stopped by here for lunch in a group of 4. We all ordered Noodle Soups and a plate of Garlic Gai Lan. I ordered a Beef Tendon soup with Ho Phun Noodles, they didn't have beef tendon. I don't know how you can call yourself a Noodle house without Beef Tendon. Anyways, I settled for the Beef Brisket with Ho Phun Noodle.

The food came out quick enough. The soup is was standard, nothing fancy or much different than other places. It came in a pretty big bowl, but, there wasn't much noodle in there. What really turned me off was the Brisket. It was absolutely disgusting. It was so absolutely fatty, and, it was falling apart. I tried fishing out chunks of fat in my meal, i ended up just eating the noodle and staying away from the rest of it. The Gai Lan was alright.

Food was cheap enough in price. It was 32$ for the 4 of us. It wasn't money well spent.

The decor of this restaurant is old and worn out. They have junk piled up in the corners. The Bathrooms are a nightmare. No hot water, which is ridiculous. Seriously, how much money are they going to lose by using hot water in the bathroom?!.... And, as you can imagine, no soap or paper towels neither. They could've just dug a hole in the ground. I won't be going back to this place ever again. I don't have high standards, but, this place is just a dive.

We had dinner here on the weekend and was seated at a table in the centre. It was fairly busy on a Saturday night. Ordered the combo dinner for 2 ( $21.85) which consisted of wonton soup, egg rolls, lemon chicken, sweet n sour pork, bbbq pork fried rice. You get 8 wontons which were ok buy the broth was too salty and did not taste that good. The lemon chicken was a good portion and deep fried but the chicken breast was hard and dry and tasted like it had precooked earlier. It was not moist like it should have been. The sweet n sour pork was just ok and did not have enough sauce so that made it dry, so we had to ask for a plate of sauce but the sauce was lukewarm and did not enhance the dish after we poured it over the dish. The rice was white and consisted of bits of pork but the flavor was not very good. Fried rice should have some kind of oyster/soy sauce to flavour so if you order the combo you end up getting this very basic plain looking so called fried rice. The egg rolls were vegy rolls, no meat inside. Its probably better to order their regular dishes (not combo) so may try some different dishes next time.. Overall the prices are reasonable and the service is ok..

The service at On Ons is pretty good. I find the service to be prompt and friendly. The delivery service is fast. I don't eat beef nor pork but I do like the shrimp fried rice. This is my staple as well as the shrimp dumpling. I don't like the majority of the food on the menu. Whenever I order the noodles I ask for the medium crispy noodles but the waitresses always bring me the thick soggy noodles and the vegetables are covered in a thick slimey sauce that turns my stomach. The wonton soup is pretty good. I've eaten at worse places than On Ons ha ha, but overall if you want something that will fill you up for cheap without all the glitz and glam On Ons is a solid recommendation for any food goer. I give On Ons 2.5/ 5.

They Take Away 1 Oyster Each Time...

Submitted Sunday, April 10, 2011 - 6:22pm [Dine in]

Don't get me wrong, I loved On On. Whenever the boyfriend or friends wanna go for Chinese, I suggest On On, but the past few times there have left me very irritated.

The service is great: the waitresses are chatty, very attentive and very helpful. I didn't have to wait long at all for my water or tea refills even during the busiest hours of the day. The restaurant itself isn't like those fancy white-clothed Chinese restaurants. It's somewhat like an Asian food shack in the middle of nowhere, but then again, with food this cheap, who cares?

Yeah, so I said cheap. And it is cheap. $8.95 for their single person combos, meat dishes ranging from $6-10, noodles and rice dishes less than $10, you can't go wrong.

BUT, the more luxurious items (aka expensive/not worth it items) are pathetic. The reason why I loved On On to begin with was their deep fried oysters. The price was $13.50 for 9-10 oysters, and they were pretty big oysters. The second and third time I went there, I received 7 TINY oysters. When I brought this up with the manager, she suggested that these oysters were bigger than the past ones and that's why there's 7 and not 9. Yeah, right.

I ordered for take-out today and guess what? I only received 6 oysters and one chunk of deep fried batter. The price has gone up about half a dollar, too. I guess this is their way of inviting me back-- not gonna happen. I've loved On On for a few years now and I don't appreciate their suddenly going cheapo on the food. It doesn't even taste that great.

On On is a No No
By lindarose of Vancouver (172 Reviews)
Submitted Wednesday, November 3, 2010 - 5:38am [Delivery]

Had a craving for Chinese Food and felt like ordering in.

Champlain Heights is annoying in that there is a dearth of decent restaurants nearby. I had ordered delivery from Lucky's before - however - they have since closed.

I remembered the On On was in nearby Burnaby and the reviews seemed okay so I went ahead .... this was a mistake.

I ordered an eclectic mix:

Medium Hot and Sour Soup for $8.20
House Special Mix BBQ Meat for $9.50;
Dry Garlic Ribs for $7.95;
Deep Fried Jumbo Prawns (full order) for $10.25;
House Special Chop Suey for $10.25;
Spicy Szechuan Fried Beans for $8.50
Steam rice (I can't remember the exact price)

The total bill came to about $67.

Thy person answering the phone was efficient and reasonably friendly. The food came within the estimated time and was hot. The delivery person was pleasant - hence 3 stars for service.

The food, however, was not particularly good.

The soup didn't have much flavour - it was spicy - but not tasty. It didn't have much tang. The small amount of meat in the soup was tough.

The BBQ Meat had a couple of nice pieces - but the pork was mostly scraps. There was also a few scraps of duck. Not good value at all. It was also not very tasty - it had a salty/sweet soy sauce poured over it.

The Dry Garlic ribs were bone in - but each piece had several small bone pieces in it. The flavour was just okay - I didn't give me kids this item due to the danger of swallowing bone pieces;

The House Special Chop Suey was SUPPOSE to have BBQ Pork, Chicken and Prawn. There was no meat in it at all. Not even a tiny bit. It looks like it was simply omitted. The vegetables were overcooked and lacked any crispness. The baby corn (which my daughter loves) was tiny scraps. There were small button mushrooms and very little carrot. It was just not very good quality. Flavour was only okay;

The spicy beans were also boring. There was a bit of heat - but not much else in the way of flavour. The beans also lacked a nice crisp snap and seemed a bit overcooked.

The rice was good - hard to screw that up.

Overall - the food was overpriced for the quality received.

I threw away the menu for this place and will not order from there again. What a waste of seventy bucks (I had given the driver a tip).

Next time - I'll get hubby to pick up from Kent's Kitchen on 41st Avenue and Victoria (see all the good reviews - including mine).

My boyfriend and I dine at the On On Wonton House quite often and we quite enjoy it. When we first went there, the atmosphere didn't impress us to say the least, but the food made up for it!!
All the items we have tried at the On On have been quite delicious. From the amazing lettuce wraps, to the great fried rice. Our favourite order for the teo of us is combination dinner 2B ($28). The wonton soup is not the best I have had, but it is very good. The fried rice, the lemon chicken, and the sweet and sour pork are all great!! I highly recommend them!! This dinner for two still gives left overs, with their large portions.
The wait staff is always coming around and checking on you. They are not always the friendliest, but its still good service all round... they never forget about you!!
When you walk in, it leaves something to be desired, but stay for the food before making a judgement of it!!!
No complaints!

I have ordered from them many times, usually when I am pressed for time, or want to EAT NOW. This restaurant has good, solid food value, and very quick service. Their decore needs to be updated, but the food is always the same; good.

I would never take my wife to On On Wonton and try to call it a "dining experience" but for good quick food there are few that beat them. I would recommend this restaurant to my friends on those qualifications.

We just ordered delivery from this restaurant and are very pleased. If there was a rating between solid and outstanding they would get it. First the food was very good. Not seasoned properly, but better to add salt than to have too much. Second the delivery, the best we've ever had. Not only quick, but friendly as well. I have no doubt that we have found our new Canadian/Chinese chinese joint. Finally we ordered the following, all solid; Wonton Soup, Beef & Broccolli, Prawn in Chili Sauce, Chicken and Cashews, House special Chow Mein, House special Fried Rice and Honey Garlic Spare Ribs.

After movies at metrotown tonight, we needed to get our hunger pang satisfied. We got one of their flyers in the mail awhile back and had it sitting in the car.
Great place for good food and reasonable prices! We ordered some wonton noodle soup for the kids and we ordered a vermicelli dish, a beef dish and some veggies.
Quick friendly service with green tea served right away and the food rolled out fast (we asked if they could get the wonton soup out for the kids first as they were starving!)
Man, the meal here sure hit the spot. The vermicelli was one of the best I've had. The kids swallowed up the wonton noodle soup. I looked at their lunch menu while we were eating. It looks good - prices are good too!
I think I'm going have to do lunch here to see how it fares - I think it's worth the effort.

Great experience except for ad hoc delivery charges over time
By noidy of Coquitlam (13 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, May 24, 2009 - 2:25pm [Dine in]

I've eaten at the restaurant a couple of times. Service was fine, environment needs updating, and the food is a very good value in terms of cost vs. quality and quantity. Our experience is primarily through delivery orders from the restaurant for several years - so that we could try a variety of dishes and have left-overs. For years, we ordered 1-3 times a month. However in the past 1.5 years found it to be an increasingly negative experience:

Although the food was a great deal, the "free delivery" was no longer such, at least for us. We lived within the delivery area, however one delivery person started charging an extra $1 by scratching out the credit card total and adding a $1, stating that he "had to" because of increased gas costs. We figured it wasn't a big deal. We noticed over time that other delivery people didn't charge extra. As well, this amount did not decrease when gas dropped significantly.

More recently, we noticed a $2 charge was added to the bill (by the restaurant, not driver) without any explanation. When I called, no one could explain why. Then someone "from the back" phoned to indicate that it was an additional charge placed because our home was "difficult" to park at and there was walking involved (we lived in a townhouse complex). I was quite shocked with this explanation and only came up with the response that they should at least tell people when placing the order.

After thinking about this some more, I wrote a letter to the owners explaining that we were very surprised and disappointed with these recent additional charges and business practices. Though we've been regular customers for years and enjoyed their food, we found the manner in which charges were added in an ad hoc manner, unacceptable. We never heard from anyone and have since stopped giving them our business. It seems that losing regular customers who placed ~$40 order, ~2x a month and tipping the delivery drivers decently isn't something they care about.

This experience makes us wonder how many other times we've had extraneous charges and if other customers in apartments or other townhouses have additional charges which weren't noticed. The food is pretty good, there's lots to choose from and a good value. Just watch for and deal with any inexplicable charges.

I've gone here enough times now, that the owners and waitresses know me as soon as I step through the door. As long as you don't mind the 1970's chinese restaurant ambiance, then this is the place for you. This is honestly one of the best chinese food restaurants I have ever been to. Why? Mainly because of the quality and of the value. Be sure to check out their $5.75 menu that sits on the table. Personal favorites: Beef Brisket on rice, wonton soup, special chow mein, and deep fried spicy squid. It's soo cheap for the amount you get. If you're a fan of Mr. Ho's, I suggest you give this wonderful restaurant a try!

If you are looking for a great value, especially for lunch, this restaurant is a great choice. I haven't had the dinner menu but it seems as though dinner prices are of a good value as well. I went for lunch and had the chicken with black bean sauce on rice and a mini hot and sour soup. This meal only set be back $8. The food tasted good enough, not the best but good. It only took 10 mins to get my food and it was hot and fresh. There was a little too much vinegar in my hot in sour soup though. Definately will visit this restaurant again for lunch!

Chow mein is best

Submitted Monday, March 24, 2008 - 8:27pm [Dine in]

I have ordered the "dinner for 1" combo B. I think that the chow mein is the best of the three dishes in this combo. The beef chop suey has too much sauce, the baby bok choy is often not trimmed properly with the hardened ends still on. The sweet and sour pork is hit and miss, some pieces taste good, some have a funny taste and are tough. The service is fast, but they can be pushy on the phone when you are ordering; probably because they are pretty busy.

Consistency is a good thing. You always know the food will be good and come out fast. Would love to see Restaurant Makeover do a show here. Waitress from Mr. Ho's is now employed here, rather chatty but good at her job. Whenever we feel like eating out with no place in mind the ON On is our default restaurant. Cheap prices and good food and fast service. Miles above Mr Ho's in every respect except for decor.

Came here for lunch with a large work group and were seated in the back area which was nice because we got our privacy. There were 14 of us and we ordered 12 dished from the lunch special menu. We got our first few dishes within 15 minutes of putting in the order - excellent since we were starving.

The food is not spectacular, I've had much better. But a few items were surprisingly delicious! (#24 - Szechuan green beans with sliced beef and rice noodles)

The service was really good considering we were there right at the lunch hour on a Friday afternoon. They added another 2 seats to our already full table without hesitation and were quite pleasant (plus smiles!) during our meal.

For 14 of us, the bill came to $75. We were full plus had leftovers and fortune cookies!
I wouldn't recommend this as a good chinese restaurant, but if you're looking for a quick and very affordable lunch, give this place a try!

Like the other reviewer, we thought we'd finally try this restaurant. There were no problems with the service, the tea came right away, and the wonton soup came within a few minutes of placing the order. The meats we ordered (wonton, s&s pork, lemon chicken) were, however, of dubious quality. The pork, in particular, was quite tough and tasted as if it had been cooked much earlier and microwaved or something. It was fairly inexpensive, but we'll never be back; for a few dollars more, there is much better Chinese Canadian food out there that is well worth the money (my rating would ideally be about 2.5 or so).

I had to chuckle as I came across this other commentaries. The first time I was there was at least 8 or 9 years ago. A joke was that a friend of mine used to call it "No No" (On On spelled backwards) restaurant . I am asian, Canadian born and was raised by authentic home style Cantonese, and am very aware of the "Chinese Canadian restaurants" around the lower mainland, as my own parents ran one. I have to say, on my first visit. this is the worst Canadian Chinese food I have ever tasted. It was definitely bland and quality of non existent. I would much rather buy something premade at Safeway or Superstore. What's more amazing is that it is still around. But, then, most of the customers are non asian.
