Hoping for a gem, finding decency

This is one of those times I was really hoping to find the proverbial hidden gem. I mean, stuck underneath a non-descript hotel in the middle of Kingsway?
Walking in sure got my hopes up. It looked clean, stylish,nice...hmm...

Aaah well, too bad that was pretty much the highlight. Well, actually, not much to complain about. Service was pretty decent, the menu is not bad. It has some of the usual HK tea restaurant stuff with some Taiwanese dishes thrown in for good measure, with much of the menu leaning towards 'shared' dishes rather than single 'combo' sets.
Why do I feel let down? The food quality is typical, entirely passable, but not very outstanding. The menu variety is also decent, but I struggle to remember anything really unique that I hadn't sampled elsewhere.

Would I make it a destination? No, for sure not. However, I think there is scant competition in the area, so in the area it would make a decent stop for affordable eats if you're just interested in filling your belly.

Always a Good Choice

New Age is one of the 'regulars' on my list of places to eat. The ambiance isn't bad. The restaurant is spacious and open and feels pretty clean. At times though, it can get a little noisy. The service is always pretty good. The servers are attentive and quick to respond. The best part is that the food always comes out extremely fast. A couple of times, my wife and I received all our dishes within 7 minutes of ordering during peak dinner hours.

The value is average to good. The dishes aren't very large and the prices aren't cheap. What makes up for it is that you get what you pay for when it comes to quality and taste. The food selection is a mix of Szechuan and Taiwanese dishes and the quality is always good. I've tried quite a number of dishes on the menu and I have never been disappointed.

I've been to New Age many times, with friends, with family, and we have always been happy and willing to return again.

Tastey Chinese food

Had dinner a while back with my family. Had the stewed pork hock, stuffed duck and a few other dishes, such as a hotpot and beef in Chinese pancake.

The pork hock was pretty good, and so was the stuffed duck, which we preorderd from the day before. The rest of the dishes were unmemorable, but the beef in pancake was pretty good.

Service here is pretty good for a Chinese restaurant, with servers filling up tea, and I was even asked how my food was. Inside looks new and it was pretty nice. It was spacious inside with lots of room between tables. I found the prices a little high for the quality and amount of food received.

Hidden gem in Burnaby

This restaurant is in an obscure location as it is part of the Best Western on Kingsway across from Fitness World. Surprisingly, the restaurant was very busy. Reservations are recommended.
They serve Taiwanese/Mainland Chinese cuisine as opposed to the usual Cantonese fare. We had the stewed pork hock which was delicious and tender(Has to be ordered 1 day in advance).
The sweet and sour fish was also excellent. I was surprised that they had deboned the fish before serving it. My 4 year old son really enjoyed the chicken in plum sauce as well. As I mentioned earlier, the restaurant was packed for such an obscure location so it must have pretty good word of mouth. A friend took us here for dinner and we will definetely be back. Service was prompt and decor was modern and clean for a Chinese restaurant. Bathrooms were also very clean. Keep in mind my ambiance and service rating are based on other Chinese restaurants. It would be a solid 3 stars if compared to Western restaurants.

Food tastes great! Thanks to MSG.

New Age caters mainly to people that appreciates traditional Chinese and Taiwanese dishes. Everything on the menu should look familiar for most Chinese/Taiwanese people, but if you're the type that order Sweet and Sour Pork, then you should fully expect to see something new. I've been there a number of times, the service was always exceptional for a place such as this; staff was attentive, very quick and efficient, and used very polite language (something that actually seemed outta place for a Chinese restaurant).
I'm sure they have a Star Trek Replicator running in the back, because the food is served VERY quickly; presentation is plain, functional, but as expected. Most dishes hovered around $10, and the portions are reasonable.
The food always tasted great; from "Three-Cup Chicken", "Pork Blood Soup", "Beef Tenderloin with Garlic and Black Pepper", Dry Squid and Pork Stir Fry"".
However, the excellent taste comes with a price. I was there couple of days ago, and we ordered the Beef Tenderloin, Fish Soup, Tofu/Veg, and Chinese Squash; they all tasted great, but the MSG got to me pretty bad. I got *very* tired, *very* thirsty, and a slight headache. Symptoms lasted for the rest of the evening. Too bad my last visit has prompted me to reconsider going back, unless i remember to specifically ask them to cut out the MSG (assuming they can do that).

Good Food, Great Ambience

Visited this place via good recommendations from a couple of friends. From the outside looking in, it seems like a dingy restaurant located just underneath/around the Best Western. Once I walked in, the experience was much different with bright lights and an unique modern decor for a Chinese restaurant. Tables were evenly spaced so I didnt fill like I was packed in a can of sardines.

The menu had a wide selection of chinese/canto/taiwanese/shanghai foods. Finally settled on the fatty pork w/ preserved veggies, sirloin cubes w/ pepper & garlic (forget name of dish, but freaking delicious), clams with squash (pricey, but quite yummy), followed by 'fried milk' as dessert. Overall the food was really good, though on the pricier side.

Service was also good, tea was refilled as needed, wasn't ever a need to ever wave anyone down more than once to get something.

I'd recommend anyone to come, and will be a repeat customer myself.

Good food...

We went on a Wednesday evening (!) -- our first time -- and it got completely packed. This usually is saying something.

The food was quite good: we ordered some ong choy and ma po tofu. Both were very tasty. The veggies were a bit salty, but still tasty.

The portions were about right, though the prices are a little bit more expensive than your standard dive-level Chinese fare.

Ambiance was really something else -- kind of a "new age" look to the place that is increasingly typical for new Chinese restaurants either catering to a younger audience or owned by younger folks.

Service was prompt.

I would come back for the food, and I would recommend the place to a friend. The only thing keeping from giving this place a ringing endorsement is the price, which again is a bit more expensive than your standard Chinese restaurant.

Good food, clean restaurant, but a bit on the expensive side

i tried this place on a friend's recommendation. I have to say that the inside is very clean and bright. Not what i expected for a chinese/taiwanese restaurant. The menu selection is very diverse and it was a bit confusing on what to order. The pork hock that we ordered was very good, so is the deep fried chicken. However, the clams dish was a bit disappointing because for the price, they only give us a few clams. Same goes with the mixed seafood dish. For $14, they only give us seafood that came from frozen seafood medley and the portion was very small.

Whether I would come back to this place, i'm not too sure. The food was tasty but I am discouraged by the portion and price.
