a bad experience

Mrs. C and I invited some friends to join us on an excursion to try this out of the way restaurant, based on the positive revues below. It is located near the 8 Rinks and adjacent 3 soccer pitches in an industrial park. I think they do catering and run the restaurant as a side business.

The ambiance was rather plain, and we sat on folding chairs at a trestle table in the all black restaurant. I will say the place was clean enough, except for the w/c. Unfortunately for us the usually quiet venue was packed full of people watching ultimate fighting. Every seat in the house was full of young people who had apparently just reached legal drinking age, and who wanted to watch the bogus non-sport on the big TV's. To add further insult the restaurant sound system was cranked up to uber-loud in order to accentuate the fighting experience. I felt like my ears had the crap kicked out of them...

The menu had a combination of pub fare and some banquet-type dishes (they are primarily caterers) so we had an eclectic variety of meals. I went with the Nathan's burger, as did one of my friends, and the rest had the lamb shank, pork medallions, and chicken penne respectively. The overly dry burger was on a stale bun with a side of cremated french fries, and the lamb was similarly dessicated. The penne and the pork were reported to be okay. None of the other side dishes were worth mentioning. One bright spot was the cheap beer at $3.75 a pint for Canadian.

Service was fine throughout the meal, although the constant apologies by the servers for the one hour wait for our order to arrive were a poor substitute for prompt service from the kitchen. When the bill arrived we were informed that a mandatory 18% gratuity had been added because they had the ultimate fighting on the TV. That was the last straw. We paid and left with deafened ears and a bitter taste in our mouths.

We all agreed never to return.

Glad we found it!

There seemed to be two versions of Nathan's being discussed here. We had to go to Burnaby, so thought we would try to find this place. Even with the map, it was challenging!

Servers were friendly and prompt. We arrived slightly before the lunch hour, but the breakfast menu was not offered. No problem. We had the regular menu and a specials sheet to choose from. The Other Half had meatloaf with mashed turnip & potatoes, and broccoli for a veg. I ordered the test piece, steak sandwich (steak cooked rare) with salad.

The food was fresh and tasty. Steak was cooked perfectly, and came with mushrooms and fried onions on a baguette. The meatloaf had a spicy sauce, but that made it more interesting. Servers seemed to be working as a team, and several came by to check on drinks and so on.

Ambiance...it is very, very nice. The place is small, but the patio is heated and surrounds two sides of the restaurant. Inside, it is modern-looking, clean lines, slate floors. Bathrooms were impeccable. The only quibble I had was that when the restaurant filled up, it was VERY noisy. Hard to hear conversation across a small table.

The prices seemed a bit "downtown", but the food we had was worth the $$. We would come back another time, if only for the adventure of finding the place!

Commendable Food....Inferior Service

It is extremely difficult to find a restaurant in Burnaby that can be jazzy, but at the same time deliver reasonably priced food that is tantalizing. Nathan’s Grill was found on a random “Google-Day” and through the website I believed this place to be a hidden gem, alternative to going downtown. Keep in mind this critique is based on having a party of 30 people here so take everything with a grain of salt...

The Good:
- The food was very tasty, everyone in our party enjoyed what they ordered and I heard no complaints about the drinks either. The menu is definitely one of the better ones I have seen in a very long time offering a little bit of everything.
- Inside of this restaurant was a bit fresh and uptown, I would not go as far as say chic as their website advertises however it was modernized.
- This restaurant is in the middle of nowhere, which can be taken as good and bad because you don’t have to worry about pay parking or busy streets.
*FOREMOST* They were showing both the UFC event in Toronto and the Vancouver Canucks playoff games on the 4 large plasma televisions throughout the restaurant.

The Bad:
- The Staff here does not seem as competent and proficient as other big-time restaurants you will visit in Vancouver. I had 8 confirmation emails sent back and forth between the bar manager who ended up not having my parties table ready when we arrived on time. What ended up happening was an unacceptable experience in hospitality that should not happen to anyone no matter what restaurant you attend.
- *PARAMOUNT* from the outside, this restaurant looks dull and unattractive...period. There is one small parking lot for about 10 vehicles, after that most people had to be parked along the muddy side of the road.
- Since they only had three staff, they could not take care of all aspects of this restaurant including the flooding toilets which really made a loathsome impression on many patrons.
- Additionally due to the lack of staff, the food took a long time to arrive to patrons. If you are going with a group of four people or more be prepared to practice a lot of patience for your meal.
- Upon arrival, there were several children running around this bantam restaurant like it was a jungle gym. I do not dislike kids or anything, however for a Bar & Grill that is showing Mixed Martial Arts on television and serving alcohol, why would you allow this?

Ended up at this place through sheer luck....live near by, but had never heard of it, or realized it existed. Was there on a Friday evening- it was pretty dead. We pretty much had the server to ourselves, but for some reason, service was quite slow. The organic salad looked amazing with a good variety of fruits on top. I had the steak sandwich- it was massive. Tasted delicious with the sauteed mushrooms and onions, though someone else thought it was a bit salty and It was hard to eat as the steak was so big and was hard to chew through in some parts. It is quite good value- where else can you get a good sized braised lamb shank for $14?

My girlfriend and i recently tried nathan's grill. While the food was good, the service wasn't!!When we arrived,we had to seat our selves. The place was dead but the server was too busy on her phone to seat us.When she finally came to our table, she took our order and went back to using her phone.I had the ribeye, and my girlfriend had the seafood penne. The food was quite good, but a little cold, not because of the kitchen, but because the server was on the patio smoking in plain site when our food came up(if they want a smoke, shouldn't they have one away from customers??).When she did bring us our food, she reeked of cigarette smoke.
Overall,we won't return,or recommend them to any of our friends.Although our food was good, our service wasn't.Maybe if our server paid as much attention to us as she did to her phone our review would be different.

Yaletown feel in the middle of Burnaby

Yes. It's in the middle of Burnaby, but it's also middle of nowhere. The restaurant is located at the back of a dead end street. The closest would be Bill Copeland sports field which is across the street and 8-rink which is about a few minutes away.

Eventhough it's located in the middle of nowhere, the interior is similar to any yaletown restaurants. The patio furnitures are very clean and stylish.

The food is very reasonable price. For a prime rib sandwich or steak sandwich for lunch, it costs around $10. It would cost extra few bucks to order the same thing in restaurants near Brentwood area. The prime rib is big with a generous portion of gravy. It's well worth the price if it's not that chewy. My teeth actually get tired chewing that piece of meat.

I just had lunch at Nathan's, I work just around the corner. After paying 12 bucks for an overcooked pre-frozen burger, and soggy fries, you can bet I will not go there again. While the decor was decent, the service was too slow and I had to get up to request something as they seem to have a hard time getting around enough. The waitress knew I was not happy with the food and still charged me full price. As far as burgers go I'll stick with Wendy's.

was in the area at a local event and checked out nathans grill for lunch, the place was packed! i was surprised so many people found their way to this little tucked away gem of a restaurant. there could have been an extra waitress or two as it looked to be too much for the two on shift to handle. I had bruchetta to start and my wife had the cheese bread, both were just superb. i followed up with the chicken alfredo(which was HUGE!) and my wife had the seafood club with this very interesting and unique soup. i think the chef called it wicked thai, WOW, i want that recipe(made me wish i had ordered something with soup!) overall the experience was great, the only room for improvement i can see would be more staff, the food took around 20min, and we were dining for about an hour in total, our server was excellent, yet stretched to thin amongst so many tables. well worth the venture. wish there was another location closer to town!

Saved the Party

Why is it so difficult to find a restaurant with a private room? Add the requirement of a TV and good food and it's nearly an impossible mission in the lower mainland.

After a long exhaustive search (away from the Olympic mayhem) I found Club Ilia. Made a reso nearly a week early and was told by the gal that a party of 25 would warrant the two small adjoining private rooms and no set menu. The day before the party I was informed by the Manager (who confessed to having no clue about the reso) that we'd be forced to squeeze into one room and order off a set menu otherwise a minimum buyout would be imposed. Forget it, I'll take my party elsewhere.

Enter Nathan's Grill. With only one day to find a new venue for the party, I dropped by to check out this restaurant. Chad met with us and was a 180 from the Manager at Club Ilia. Chad actually wanted our business. Sold.

Location: Obscured in the industrial warehouse district in mid-Burnaby. Almost all of us got lost finding it. But we know where it is now.

Ambiance: Comfortable seating, acoustics a tad loud, but it is a bar and grill. Although there aren't any private rooms, we pretty much had the place to ourselves as it wasn't very busy. I wouldn't come here for a quiet meal during any PPV events though.

Service: Jessica took great care of us all night. She was attentive, quick, and friendly, without being intrusive. And she was great with the kids in our party.

Food: Good reports from everyone save the pork chops. Steaks, paella, short ribs, etc. all excellent.

Overall: We had a great experience and were all pleasantly surprised at the caliber of Nathan's Grill. It was a perfect place to have a large group, enjoy good food, and watch the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. It's a shame this place doesn't seem to draw in the crowds. But we said we'd all be back.

Great Food - Poor Location

Visited Nathans for an early dinner (6:30PM) the dining room was empty and the patio had a few full tables. The tables did start filling up around 7:15. The location is out of the way, if you don't know the Burnaby central area you will need a map, there is some signage starting at 8 Rinks.
If is certainly worth the drive, the food is excellent. They had sold out of the steak sandwich so I opted for the Veal Schnitzl & my husband the Penne Meditterean, both entrees were delicious & a generous portion.
The decor is sleek & modern, making for a great ambiance.
Great patio for warm afternoons & evenings.

i recently attended a christmas party at Nathans Grill in december, upon arrival i had my doubts, first was the location, went in a few circles before we finally found it and second was the size, for the amount of people that were scheduled to be there it looked like it would be pretty cramped,
however they did an excellent job with the seating arrangement and seemed well organized. the food was spectacular, a food bar was set up for everyone to snack on , the one item that vividly stands out in my memory were these small crackers with smoked salmon and onion, and an exotic platter of cheeses ive never heard of before(but now find any excuse to use at home) followed by a five course meal and a dessert bar to top it all off, all in all the staff did an excellent job "maintaining" the peace sorta speak and were quite helpful and coopertive. in fact ive been there for lunch a few times since then and enjoyed both food and service every time(keep up the unique daily specials!!!)
defineatly reccomend hunting this one down, its worth the trip!thanks to all staff at nathans grill

It seems the chef has been changed for the better.Quality selection, but grossly overpriced & sort of stingy with portions.Very upscale decor, parking OK and the service needs some professional mature staff to be more attentive to customers, suggesting specials and ensuring prompt acceptable service. The youth working there need solid grounding, but possibly there are no medical/dental benefits and low wages. Hours of operation are totally wierd, best to phone ahead to see if Nathans is actually OPEN ! Burnaby city employees seem to frequent the place and a full house does happen, some times. Fresh coffee refills and soft background "music" needed ,yesterday.

Hidden Treasure

In search of a reasonable place to purchase a steak dinner, my hubby and I used this site to track down a place close to home. Having never even heard of Nathan's Grill, although it is 5 minutes from home, we thought we'd check it out. Although it was in a very odd area, we were intrigued by it. For a Friday evening, it was fairly quiet and we were greeted by a very pleasant server. The menu was quite extensive and not outrageously priced. My selection was a steak special and my husband chose a salmon dish. We were both delighted by how delicious our meals were. The flavor was out of this world and the way that the food was arranged on the plate was very tastfully done. The servers were very friendly and did not just look after their own area. We were well taken care of. We will definitely be returning and taking our family along next time!

I'd have to agree with the other people that Nathan's Grill is located in a odd place for a restaurant but that's what makes it special. It's such a calm, secluded area and that's part of its charm. The food is good and the place looks nice. It's somewhat small but it has a cozy appeal. The servers are nice and efficient however I did go with a group of 6 people for my B-day and we practically where the only ones dining. Our waitress also gave me a free dessert with a sparkling candle which was very nice of them. I will definitely go back.
