Not bad...

I went to Mui Garden on the way to somewhere else and had a feed. Here is I experienced:

I had the chow mein noodles with beef and green pepper, which was well prepared. The noodles had a nice consistency. As a side I had the deep fried chicken wings which were hot and tasty, and a good deal at 8 pieces for 4 bucks. My wife had the dinner special which had a good bowl of borscht with a side of toast, chicken steak on rice with a sauce that looked like gravy, and some side veggies. The food is here is kind of like the HK equivalent of gwai lo comfort food.

The restaurant is tidy if not spotlessly clean, and the servers are knowledgeable and fairly quick and friendly. I like the comfortable ambience and the fact that a lot of families eat there. It has a welcoming atmosphere.

Overall, it isn’t the greatest, but it is a good place to get some hot food. Try the mini meals if you want a great deal.

Food and value is the only thing to go for.......

When I got to this place, I was a little reluctant to walk in. It was nothing pretty, or outstanding looking, but I was surprised by the food that was served.

I heard that they were famous for their curry brisket and hai nan chicken. They were right. OMG it was so good. There was a reason why they sell their curry sauce for $3.00 a bowl. Mmmmmm.......... They chicken sauce was so good too.

The bill was not expensive at all. Very economical.

Their ambiance is not the greatest, but for the food that they serve, I didn't really care.

This may be one my regular hang outs.

Might Try Again

Went to Mui Garden for lunch on a rainy Saturday...

Firstly the food: We ordered the set lunch (chicken steak entree with cream soup and toast) and the beef noodle soup. Might be my personal preference but the soup base tasted a little like instant noodle soup to me. Beef was a little too fatty for my liking, but still definitely edible. My partner's chicken steak was subpar; too much gravy and the veggies were those small frozen peas and carrots you get from the supermarket. I think maybe we just ordered the wrong items and will probably come back to give them another shot because....

Value is there. Prices are reasonable for the amount of food served in a clean atmosphere.

Service was actually a lot better than many other comparable chinese restaurants. We were seated promptly, order was taken promptly and got our food quickly. Waitresses were polite, the only slips was that they had to be reminded on the drink order and tea wasn't refilled.

OK if you're in the area

The Lougheed Hwy/North Road area bordering Burnaby, Coquitlam, and New Westminster seems to be starving for a decent Chinese restaurant and this restaurant is the only one that is satisfactory in the area. Yes - the service could be improved upon as my family and I had to repeatedly ask the waitresses about our order. The other frustrating thing is that take out orders have priority over customers eating at the restaurant.

The prawns were good but price was higher than average at about $18.00 a dish - relatively speaking when compared to othe Chinese restaurants targeting the same customer base this is somewhat high.

As mentioned previously the value meals are a better deal.

Good to try out if you are in the area and want Chinese food. There is a parking lot and a parking spot may not be immediately available by the restaurant but parking can be found.

awful beef congee

Went for lunch here. I had the regular bowl of beef congee, it was very watered down, not thick like it should be, and had absolutely no flavour at all. Usually there is a ginger flavour or a nice rice flavor but not today. The beef tasted like pieces of rubber, no beef flavor like it was boiled for hours or something.. I've had the congee twice a long time ago and it was ok, but today it was really horrible.

Terrible Service

I recently went to Mui Garden and when I went in, they unexpectedly did not know what four is. They stared at me for a few seconds. All the food came in five minutes after ordering. We ordered Hai Nam Chicken, Curry beef, choi sum, and some rice. The Hai Nam Chicken was tasteless, the curry beefs' potato was still hard. The choi sum was very soft and the rice was hard and did not stick together. Their service was terrible. They mumbled for my daughter to get the plates over while we were still eating. They did not notice that we did not have any tea left, just ignoring us. Overall, I would not go back to eat.

Good food but service could improve

Food quality is usually good at this restaurant for both lunch and dinner.

Excellent value if you go for the set dinner menu. A dinner for 6 is only $48.

The service staff could pay more attention to customers. It seems their job is to take order, deliver the dishes from the kitchen and that's it.

Don't expect 5 stars services from these staff as many of servers have been working at this restaurant for many years.

No problem recommending this restuarnt to anyone who hasn't been there before.

Great Value - Good Food

I had the wonton soup there today and my friend had a fish congee today. Both were pretty good, and size was pretty big for the price. Seems a bit cheaper than a few other places around the area. Its right next ot the sky train so its easy to get to.

Ambience is typical of what we call Chinese "tea time" resturanant". Love the cold lemon tea. Very authentic to what I like in Hong Kong. Though I have had a miss before, and I think it kind of depends on server who makes it.

Some servers are nicer and more efficient than others. They just added crabs, fresh fish, and prawns to their menu. I havne't had a chance to try it yet, but I did see the table next to us order some and it looked and smelled pretty good. Will try next time.

Much better than expected

Read some of the reviews but went anyways. Food was great, love loved the curry. The Hai Nan Chicken is very authentic, but some people with more westernized taste may not like it, since it is supposed to served cold and does have all the chicken bones in it.

Went at dinner time and had a very family feel to it. Ordered green beans as well and portion size was good.

Food came super fast and was orders taken very fast. Staff mostly efficient, though staff do lack a bit of English communication skills (like many Chinese restaurants).

Over all not bad at all, and a great value.

I'm a regular here because it's close, the food is decent, they know us, and the price is right.

That being said, I can understand the comments on service (which is why I gave it a 3 instead of more), I think that one of the waitresses is really tired of her job, but I must say that we consistently receive EXCELLENT service here. There are a number of servers who are just outstanding, always on top of filling up the tea, bring you what you ask for promptly, and generally attentive, but 1 or 2 seem overworked and tired of being there.

The curry is awesome, awesome, awesome. The Ong Choy (sometimes called marigold in English, but usually not listed on the menu as it is one of those seasonal items) is simply done to perfection when you order it with fu yu (a type of fermented bean sauce) and chili.

I've tried alot of items on the menu and it's all pretty good for this type of fair. Don't expect words like decor, ambience, and dining experience to mean the same thing here as you might expect elsewhere (ie finer dining). This is essentially a restaurant that sits on the border of Chinese Canadian and Hong Kong fare (yes, they say Hong Kong style, so there are live prawns, crab, fish, and slow boiled soup and the like, but the menu is also really tailored to longstanding perceptions of what Canadians expect out of Chinese food, so you'll also find all of your sweet and sour and lemon chicken items as well).

Not out of this world, but I keep coming back when I'd rather not cook because it's so solid, local, and affordable (and no one bats an eye at noisy kids here ; ) )
