Popular North Burnaby pub, with a ski-chalet theme, offers excellent dining choices.
It was a Wednesday night and this place was packed full of students (there was even a line-up outside at about 8:45!), even though it is a big space. The ambience was pretty typical for a pub. The prices were decent. Had the 25cent wings which was the special for that day- they were pretty puny and the taste was just average. Wouldn't go out of my way to visit again.
Great wings for just a mere 15 cents on Wednesdays. Our party was not disappointed with the wings. We liked the Thai (sweet chili pepper sauce) and BBQ (thick, smoky sauce) ones the best. Their pizzas at $11.99 for up to 4 toppings was tasty too- the crust seemed homemade and the tomato sauce was fresh and light. A pint of the Russell Cream Ale (not found in liquor stores) was the perfect dark ale accompaniment for our wings. And to finish off our meal, the Mocha fudge ice cream cake was the right combination of whipped cream, nutty, rich coffee goodness. Enough dessert for 2 people for just $4.99. We all agreed to go back and try other menu items. We would even order the pizza for takeout.
Been here a couple times, thought I'd weigh in:
The food is all right, nothing really special comes to mind. Typical pub food with burgers, fish and chips, etc. I've got a complaint about their long island iced tea pitcher though - none of the people (even the girls) at our table felt even a slight buzz after drinking it. Not sure if this is a recurring thing with mixed drink pitchers here... so we stuck with beer and shots for the rest of the night.
Service is so-so, I've found it to be difficult to flag down a waitress, seems like they're a bit understaffed.
The atmosphere is by far the best part, it's like what the others have said, it's like a big lodge / chalet. Top marks here. I almost want to come back just for this, but since I'm living in Coquitlam it's a bit of a drive just to go to a bar. I'd probably visit more often if I lived closer.
FYI it seems to be a bit of an older crowd here, 25+ for the most part.
I love this Pub - every time I am there I feel like I am in the Swiss Alps. The food is good with reasonable prices, and nice selection of on tap beers. Service has been without incidents every time I come.
I have to admit that everytime I go I order the chicken burger, one of their sandwiches, nachos, or wings.
So there are items on the menu that I haven't touched.
It is a must try in my books.
Went for their wednesday wing night. Ordered hot wings and calamari. The food arrived relatively quick. The wings were decent sized and looked good. But the taste was just...blah. I dont know if they fried the wings together with the calamari but the wings tasted very fishy. They sure werent fresh. Maybe frozen. The hot buffalo style sauce was nice but the wings were just too disgusting...we ordered 12 of them and ate about 4 and couldnt eat anymore of that stuff!!
And about the calamari, I thought they were okay, but my friend the calamari expert did not enjoy them at all. He said he could feel the grainy texture of the squid (obviously, from not washing it thoroughly).
The service was not bad, but not good either. You have to go up to the counter to pay if you are paying with a card. Also, the waitress talked to us while she was passing us by! Not even caring to stop for a second eh? Oh well, what do you expect from a pub like this.
Oh and I thought it was ridiculous that they charged 75c for a dipping sauce with the wings (and not even notifying us that they charge dipping sauce when we ordered, only to find out that it was charged when we were paying)
Will not be going back.
The Mountain Shadow is everything that a pub should be.
Fun, Lively, Great Food, Great Beer. I would recommend checking the Shadow out just to enjoy a real pub.
When I go there I usually stick to their burger selection and the food is always fresh and tasty. Service is good but can be hit or miss depending on how busy it is. The beer selection is also wide and varied.
I've been going there for at least the last 10 years and always recommend this place.
having had the opportunity to eat at the mountain shadow i would not refer anyone to eat there.Everything tasted like it came out of the deep fryer and the kitchen staff look the part of a soup kitchen. The menu has far to many CHINESE dishes on it for a north american pub , and everything tasted like it came out of a jar including the THAI SAUCE. in leaving you with these thoughts and thoughts they are , FOOD SAFE is a practice YOU the diner should be aware of ; BON APPETITE!!!!!.
Been here twice, first time was good, food was great, but service was very slow. I like the pub itself, neat place.
Second time was really bad, went for wing night, wings were cold, we sent them back. Came back cold again. Service was really slow. Took 15 minutes for my drink order.
Will try one more time, hopefully it will be better
