A restaurant in what appears to be a large 2 story house that is full of old world Greek charm, inside and out. The dishes are rustic, simple, and full of mediterranean flavor. Family staff is always friendly and ready to help. Across from Central Park. Free parking at back.
We visited as a party of 9 and chose this place because it was the closest Greek restaurant to the majority of our group. We called before to make a reservation and asked if they charge a mandatory tip because of a larger party and they replied that there wasn't such an obligation (and was not written on the menu). However, when the bill arrived the waitress added onto the bill with a pen by hand a mandatory 15% tip and told us that because we had a large group that this was required. She crossed out the total on the printed bill and wrote the new total herself with a 15% tip. I thought that was a bit awkward.
We would have glady tipped properly anyway if the service wasn't so bad and plus, they had told us over the phone that there wasn't supposed to be a mandatory tip. As soon as we pulled out the entertainment coupon I could see the frown on the waitress' face as if they disliked their own promotions. She hardly checked on us at all and it wasn't even a busy night, it was a weeknight and there were 2 other tables to serve. She didn't smile at all and was not friendly.
I ordered the greek ribs and my boyfriend had the mousaka and calamari appetizer. The calamari was awfully small for its price. Overall, the entree portions were ok and the food was not horrible. We've had better taste elsewhere though, and for a lower price and bigger portions as well. This was rather expensive even with the entertainment coupon. I didn't think I got what I paid for even with the discount.
We will not be returning as we didn't really feel welcome by both the waitress and the owner (older lady always by the counter). The bus boy cleaning up tables was friendler than them.
This is my favorite Restaurant for Greek, Minoas has authentic dishes with great flavor! The Tzatziki is the best I have had. A group of us go for lunch often, and never have a problem when asking for substitutions. The owners are friendly and welcoming. I usually have the souvlaki, which is always tender and delicious. the portions are good and the prices are reasonable. The homemade Almond cookies should not be missed. I really like the house and the way it is decorated, with plenty of room for a quiet table for two, or a large party. A great place to enjoy good times.
If you're in the mood for some great Greek food, look no further. The food is splendid and aplenty. Not being wheelchair accessible, my friend and I chose to do take out dining. We were greeted by a very delightful friendly waitress who happened to also be a member of the family's restaurant business.
While I was waiting for my friend to pay for the food upstairs, she took the time to engage in friendly chat and show me a picture of what the restaurant used to look like when she was a child, which in fact used to be a house she grew up in.
Great service, great food.....we'll go back for sure.
We used to go to Ramie's but they could never cook by lamb chops the way I want. We go to Minoas about 8 times a year and the food and the service is always great. The restaurant is pleasant and the dolmandes are the best we've had. I can get my lamb chops well cooked without being burnt and the Biftekia is great. Good size glass of wine as well
Just went to Minoas for a preholiday gathering with friends...I wish I lived closer! The food was sooo good... I have been coming here for 5 years, and everytime I am reminded of why I keep coming back! I had the grilled calamari appetizer (delicious with a squish of fresh lemon) and my favorite lamb shoulder (kleftiko)... Alex was my server and it was nice to catch up with him. Thanks for the amazing food and wonderful service guys!!
We had lunch at Minoas last Friday. When we walked upstairs into the main dining area, we were seated right away, at a table overlooking Kingsway. The dining area was bright and cheerful, with white stucco walls, plants everywhere and some Greek music playing in the background. It immeditely brought back fond memories of my vacation to Greece a number of years ago. One of the staff quickly took our initial order, and some chilled white Greek wine appeared at the table within a couple of minutes. For lunch we had a appetizer platter, including grilled calamri, spinach pie, Greek salad. The calamari was excellent, with a bit of tzatziki complementing the taste! Minoas grilled calamari is now my favourite. The rest of the meal was great too, including fresh Greek salad, tasty and tender spinach pie, and nice garlicy hummus. The server and other staff passed by regularly, topping up the wine and water glasses, asking if everything was ok and if we needed anything else. They were friendly while being professional, keeping an eye on how our meal was progressing, stopping to chat from time to time, ensuring we felt well taken care of. Our hot appetizer platter and half litre of wine was great value. We'll be going back again, but the difficult decision will be whether to have that wonderful hot appy platter again, or to try other menu selections.
My husband and I went to Minoas for the first time last week and we were impressed with the warm service and delicious food. Located on Kingsway near Boundary, this Greek Restaurant looks like a little house and can be easily missed if not paying attention… but it was a good thing we stopped in!! We started with the saganaki appetizer (pan-fried Greek cheese) which became my instant favorite! The cheese had a nice hot crust on the outside and perfected melted inside, it was so yummy with a quish of fresh lemon! I decided to try the kleftico (lamb shoulder) dinner and the portion was huge! I ended up taking half of it home to eat for lunch the next day. The lamb was tender with intense flavor… and melting off the bone. It was on special for $13.95 and I can’t wait to go back and taste it again! My lamb was served with the usual Greek accompaniments; rice pilaf, stewed veggies, Greek salad & lemon potatoes (the potatoes were to die for!). Even though it was a little busy that night because of the special event across at Swangard Stadium, the service was good and the food was worth the extra few minutes wait… We will back real soon! Thank you Georgia for being such an excellent (and funny) waitress!
My personal favorites are the grilled calamari (without a doubt the best I've found), the spanakopita and the roast lamb! The ambiance is true Greek (great decor with a warm and cozy feel) and the service is exceptional. They make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive; providing attentive yet relaxed service that makes for a wonderful dining experience. Great food; wonderful service; Minoas is definitely a favorite!
I went to Minoas with a friend and found the food outstanding and the service friendly and personable.
We had the lamb - simply delicious and wonderful. The tenderness of the lamb was incredible.
The service was very personable and we chatted with the server for quite some time.
The restaurant was very comfortable. I found out that it has been family owned/operated for many years and you can taste that in the food - like home cooking.
I would recommend it to anyone.
We have yet to dine in but we have ordered take out twice.
The food was better the second time we went but we have received great service both times. They gave us 10% off our orders and a $8 off dine-in coupon. I know this spot is family run so it appears they take some pride in their service.
I would say that it's more expensive if you are comparing it to say Stephos, but the food is really good quality. I had the beef souvlaki and the bf had the prawn souvlaki. We shared saganaki as an appetizer and it was delicious.
Second time around they made a mistake on my meal and I ordered just a one skewer meal but they gave me two. The leftovers were still good for lunch the next day.
For all the years we have lived in Burnaby,(many many) I was hesitant to try this restaurant because of the location. The Entertainment coupon was the main reason. That was a fortunate thing. The food is plentiful, and with real Mediterranean flavour. The service has always been very prompt, and courteous. The servers will take the time to explain the items, and even make a recommendation, which is not a sales job.
It is with pleasure we can bring guests here, and not be disappointed.
My only nit-pick is the Sagnaki portion is not large enough.
Don't let it keep you away.
I have been here three times. Each time has been fine, but the service has always been slow. Also, I have to wait quite a while for my meal each time. The food is decent, but there is much bette Greek food out there. The location is covenenient, and parking is good.
I've been to Minoas for lunch and dinner several times and the food was always consistent. They have the best kalamari I have ever tried. It is made with baby squid, so it is extra tender and delicious. The souvlaki platters are yummy too - potato, rice, salad, tzatziki are seasoned with just the right amount of flavour. The meats(especially the beef) are tender, tasty and not overcooked or dry like most other Greek restaurants. Portions are decent too, not too small, but not overly big either.
Food: Good portion size. I love their lamb chops, always very flavorful, and done to my liking.
Service: Ok. Staff are friendly. Sometimes you'll have to catch their attention when it's on a slow night.
Coupon in Entertainment Book.
Will go back.
We had dinner at Minoas for the first time last night. It is in a funky old house, the atmosphere was warm and friendly. Service was fantastic. The food is just so-so. The greek salad served with all dinners suffers from old produce and a lukewarm temperature. We passed by a row of plated salads on a table when we arrived, I guess they sit out so the servers can grab them quickly. We both had deep fried calamari, it was tender and the portions were generous.
I have always wanted to try this place out and i finally got my chance! The building itself is quite impressive and nice inside (it used to be a giant house). To be honest the one thing that stood out about this place was the service (or lack of). We arrived on a thurs at about 7pm, after being seated we had to wait about 10 mins for the waitress to even take our drink orders ( it was NOT busy and no water was even brought or offered)! I had the Kleftico lamb and my lady had the red snapper. The food was tasty and the portions decent for the price (witch was higher than expected for the location/menu) but after bringing the food the waitress disappeared for good until we waved her down for the bill (I really hate to do this but it was just getting out of hand!). Anyway we enjoyed the food and the building but even with the complementary $8 coupon they give you after the meal I don't think we will return (great idea by the way!). Enjoy!!
Whenever i go to a greek restaurant, i always order somesort of lamb dish. This time i went for the lamb souvlaki and it was tender, but i have definately had better. Also, the portion size of the dishes were quite small and the waiter did not seem at all involved. Overall, this place served mediocre food in an interesting looking restaurant. I probably wouldnt eat here again but it's was worth a try since I've driven past this place a million times and had never tried the food.
This restaurant is in a great converted house... neat atmosphere and perfect for a Greek family restaurant. The server was friendly and treated my 3 year old daughter well.
The only problem... the food was kinda gross. I have eaten lots of greek food at different restaurants from classy to fast food and I never considered that lemon, oregano, garlic and all the other greek flavours could be done wrong.
My eggplant dish was okay, but the greek salad was cheap and the cauliflower in butter sauce was very overcooked and really quite awful. The roast potatoes weren't anything special, and that's just a shame because what could be better than a good greek roast potato?
I always leave greek restaurants very sarisfied, but not so much this time - just trying to get that taste of overcooked cauliflower out of my mouth.
If you want good greek, I'd go elsewhere.
Been going for years now. The owners and staff always greet me and my business associates, family and friends with a genuine warm welcome, followed by delicious cuisine and great music.
Minoa's is a true gem in the city.
The food is always fresh and delicious. The salads are crisp and the food always prepared perfectly.
My favourites are pastitio, stuffed peppers and saganaki.
My friends like the fried livers and traditional Greek dishes.
There is ample parking in the back.
It is nice to walk up well-worn slightly creaky stairs (reminds me of my grandparent's home in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan) and be greeted with a smile by the owners.
Best place to sit for private conversations and intimate dates in on the enclosed balcony.
Before entering the restaurant, the place looked like a big old house. Walking in, a waiter happily greeted while he was heading up the stairs. We were seated to the window and the waitress offered that we can sit at other tables. The waitress was nice in giving us choices of seats. Service was very authentic and they treated us with good customer care and without being too disturbing.
The food was solid. I had a lamb souvlaki. The entree came with greek salad appetizer. The salad tasted great and fresh. When the souvlaki came, I was a bit disappointed about the portion. For $15-16, I would have expected a bit more from the entree. For my entree, there were two sticks of lamb and rice. The entree portion was not memorable and tasted like lamb from festivals.
The ambience offers an old, rustic look. The place was quiet, with old greek music playing on the big rear view projection TV in the background. To me the old rustic decor was simply because it was old. I felt awkward because of how old things were. Maybe others would appreciate this type of ambience.
In summary, I felt that the food was solid but overpriced. Even if service was included into the food, the place does not deserve to charge that type of price range.
