Little Billy's is a family owned and operated Mediterranean steak house that opened it's doors in 1975.
First the "Solid" features....The ambiance is warm, dark wood and cosy. The service was professional and courteous. Free parking.
The Mediocre.... The saganaki appetizer was great. The greek salad and Kalamari was your usual fare. But the Prawn Souvlaki was bland and all the accompanying cooked vegetables were just taking up space.
The volume of the music was too high. It made speaking to others at our table an effort. The other patrons talking added to the volume (which I know you can't do much about).
It's great that there's a place like this in North Burnaby and big eaters would probably like it.
First time visit and joined a few friends for an intimate birthday celebration. Menu selection is wide and varied and primarily focuses on Greek, Italian, and standard American fare (i.e. steak). I ordered the evening special of braised lamb shoulder and was not disappointed by the portion size nor the flavour. Meat texture was very tender and moist. Hubby ordered the ribs and he seemed to enjoy it. We shared the mac n' cheese appy and I found it only average. My main came with potatoes, rice pilaf, and greek salad. The rice pilaf was surprisingly good, not oily and salty and fragrantly flavoured. The freebie pita bread was warm and freshly made...yum. The only knock on my food was the poorly made drink - a shirley temple. Who can screw up a shirley temple??
Service was solid and a non issue. The restaurant was about 50% full on a Sunday evening and they were adequately staffed. The server didn't go above and beyond, yet the basics were covered like doling out usual service checks and coming by for drink refills, etc. She observed good timing and seemed pleasant.
Value was fairly good too, considering the portion size and quality of food. Strictly looking at price though, it's very close to prices found in trendy downtown resto's and I'm not sure if it's reflective of this neighbourhood. Don't get me wrong, North Burnaby is a middle class neighbourhood and I'm sure the socio-economic make up of the residents can fork out the extra dough to enjoy a nice meal. Comparing plate to plate, the value is there but on a whole, and if I was looking for that "night out" experience I may not frequent this place often. The newly revamped Little Billy's seem a little out of place on Hasting Street. We dropped about $80 for two mains,1 appetizer, and two drinks, tips and taxes. Reasonable but not awesome value.
Ambiance was comfortably modern and cozy. Bar on the side and rectangular and round tables set in a long room. The chairs were covered in patented leather (dark brown?) and the tables were topped with glass, although there was proper table linens. The decor is upscale (for the burbs) but not snooty or pretentious. Guests that night were comprised of groups in the 40+ age range and other respectable looking people.
Overall, a nice first time experience.
Having been to the Old Little Billys I was looking forward to dining at the new location. It had been many years and I had fond memories of the food and service.
The new location is nice to look at but right away we noticed the service to be lacking. No warm greeting or smiles. We also noticed that the plates on our table were chipped and there were plastic table covers and paper napkins. Definitely a 3 dressed up as a 9!
When we asked about the steak and lobster special our server said "its steak & lobster.... I don't know what else to tell you....."
The appetizers were escargot and crab stuffed mushroom caps....fair at best. Our server did not come check on us or ask us how we enjoyed it and said nothing as she cleared our plates. In fact she had little to say at all.
Our mains were a very nice lobster fettuccine, tasty and good size portion and a very grisly tough rib-eye steak with an under cooked baked potato. I was very disappointed with the steak for $31. Again there was no check in from our server and I had to flag her down to get a drink refill. After we finished eating we sat 10 minutes with dirty plates on our table before walking to the till to get our check. I was surprised to see a $3 charge to sub our house salads for Caesar salad even though they were the same price on the menu and our server said nothing about the extra charge.
All in all a very sad time and one we will not be repeating!
We really hoped to have a great experience matching some of the other reviews here but that was not the case. we will not be back nor could we ever recommend this restaurant to others.
Well....... it's been years since we have had a Little Billy's Pizza. We decided to reunited our taste buds with the Ultimate House Special. Just the right amount of cheeses, toppings and the soft thick crust. After a short wait, our pizza was ready and off we went to re-kindle the flavours of the past.
As the title of my review states... What's in a Pizza ? this Ultimate Pizza was missing four major components. Tomatoes, shrimp, black olives, and mushrooms. Don't get me wrong, it tasted very good but, a little shy. I think over time someone has forgot to put a little LOVE into the mix and reduced the toppings in it's place.
Maybe they have a new pizza chef or changed the recipe(s). In this case....... change was not good.
I went around Christmas time with my boyfriend as we always pass the restaurant and notice that it looks very nice from the outside. Inside its actually really cramped. When we arrived all the tables were full and there was barely any space for us to stand and wait for a table. Luckily the awkward wait wasn't so long and we were soon seated.
We ordered the calamari for appies and the seafood pasta and steak. The pasta presentation looked very nice, unfortunately it tasted very bland it was almost cold. The steak was also a very big disappointment, it was barely warm and overcooked (i ordered it as rare). It seemed ridiculous that a steakhouse failed at making steak. Terrible food for its price. We will not be returning again.
I won't lie. I come here just for the ahi tuna and this is what I recommend to anyone who wants to try this place. It is delicious. For $20, you get a salad and an amazing ahi tuna dish.
Service is OK. One time our server spilled the drink and it took her awhile to remember to get us a new one. It spilled all over my friend and friend's wallet but all we got was a "sorry". Oh well!
I like this place. I've been here at least 5 times and plan to be back and yes, just for the ahi tuna. Try replacing the potatoes with more veggies + cheese sauce instead of their stock sauce... :)
This was our first time at Little Billy's and loved it. A friend lives nearby and goes regularly. We finally took her advice and went on a Friday night. There were four of us and we made a reservation as their website suggested. It's a good thing as there are only 50 seats and it was pretty much full at 7pm. The ambiance was very comfortable and you felt very relaxed sitting there. Upon arrival we were greeted immediately by both the bartender and hostess (Owner?). Every single person was extremely friendly and the hostess checked back with us 3 or 4 times during the evening. All though the menu had many good offerings we decided on 2 platters for 2. One was a seafood platter for $85 which included lobster, jumbo prawns (Huge), scallops, crab, calamari and more. The other was a Greek platter for $65 which included prawns, lamb, 3 types of skewers, rice, potatoes and Greek salad. It was a feast and we loved everything. What really impressed us was any server, not just our own (who was excellent) who walked by would pick up dirty dishes or offer to re-fill drinks. It's a real team effort and they are all very friendly. I would highly recommend Little Billy's to anyone who likes great food and great service!
We live near the restaurant but only just discovered it. We received a friendly greeting upon entering and were asked if we had a reservation; we didn't, but that was not a problem and we were seated immediately. The restaurant was about three-quarters full just after 6:30 pm on a Friday night. It's a little bit cramped, but not overly so and the seats are very comfortable. After we were seated we had to wait a few minutes for a menu, but not too long.
The menu is varied with a wide range of tempting dishes, but I was in the mood for steak and ordered the chef's cut bone-in rib eye. It was delicious, seared on the outside and medium rare, as ordered; it melted in my mouth. The steak comes with a choice of sides and I picked the baked potato, which came with all the fixings on the side in generous quantities - there were enough toppings there for at least four baked potatoes and all good quality. The grilled vegetables were crispy, but not overly so, and delicious. We tried the crab stuffed mushrooms to start and they were decadent and yummy.
Our server was attentive without being intrusive and was warm and friendly. During the course of our dinner, the manager came over to ask how we were doing and stayed and chatted with us for a few minutes and seemed genuinely pleased that we were enjoying our meal. Everyone there was friendly and there was a definite "neighbourhood" feeling, with warm greetings from the staff and hugs for people I assume are regulars there.
We had to wait a bit longer than we would have liked for our bill, but that is not uncommon; apart from that the service was excellent.
The prices are a bit high, but the portions are generous and the quality is very good, so probably not a weekly visit, but at least monthly
We will definitely be going back! We had a great time and are eager to sample more of the appies and maybe try out some desserts. And the lamb dishes.
I look forward to becoming a regular!
My husband and I have been meaning to try out Little Billy's for a long time since we live in North Burnaby and it is relatively close by. The place also looks to have some ambience from the outside. After hearing a good review from an acquaintance we decided to go try it out.
We went on a Wednesday night and there were only 4 other tables occupied. We thought, "Great, we get our pick of tables, and the waiting time will be great". Boy were we wrong about the service. We wanted to like this place so we went in with an open mind. There seemed to be only two servers--one main server, and one bartender. We thought that would be adequate since it was a quiet night. They gave our menus right away and the selection looked great. I've browsed their menu before online and everything looks so tempting. They have a range of premium looking meat dishes, seafood, and greek inspired dishes that come with greek salad, and pita bread.
We were ready to order eventually, but it took a while for the server to come back to take our order. Perhaps 5 minutes which was fine. We then ordered an appetizer--the garlic butter prawns, followed by our entres--a New York Steak, and their Signature Ribs. The food pretty much came all at once, including the bread basket (oily garlic bread and buttered pita bread), and it took a good 40 minutes for the food to arrive. We were in a good mood so we weren't too concerned.
The food was not bad. The entrees were on average $24 each and that included all the sides. The appetizer wasn't worth it, though. Four prawns drenched in butter with garlic salt, with more garlic bread for $7. I could have done better. Also I don't understand the cheez whiz covered cauliflower side. My ribs were a generous portion and tasted good (dry rub smoked ribs). My husband's New York Steak was more Medium than Medium Rare, but it was edible.
We would have considered coming back at this point until what happened afterwards. We were sitting there, obviously done with our meals, and trying to flag someone down for the bill. We waited, and waited, and waited some more. Some 20 minutes later we finally managed to get the bill. The HST made our bill steep, but that's more Gordie's fault than the restaurants. We calculated the 15% tip to be around $9.00 if we tipped on top of the HST. I dropped my Mastercard, and we were ready to go. We then waited, and waited some more. This time it was about 45-50 minutes before I just gave up and walked up to the bar. Yes we have two legs, but if I had to serve myself, and be subject to such bad service then I should've have had to pay close to $80 for an experience that was worth $9.99. I told the bartender that we had been waiting forever for someone to serve us and she just muttered "sorry" and refused to offer any further apology. I would have been a lot more sympathetic, but the server didn't seem to have any trouble serving the other party behind us, while completely ignoring us (we are young professionals, and dressed in business attire). I could not figure out for the life of me why we received such bad service, other than the fact that they do not know how to truly run a fine dining restaurant (which they attempt to be).
McDonald's quality service with 4 star prices. Don't waste your money OR time.
My initial impression of the restaurant was good. A place where people would go to enjoy an evening with good food. The atmosphere was great, good servers. We were there for a birthday party but last minute, some cancelled on us so the birthday celebrant called ahead to warn the restaurant about the decreased number of people.
After sitting at our table, about ten of us, waiting to have our orders taken, an older lady, perhaps a manager, came to our table and lectured us about how we should have called ahead to let them know about our lessened party and how they turned away others to accommodate our party. She spoke directly to us as a group where others may have overheard.
Was this professional and appropriate?
The birthday celebrant had a horrible evening because of this incident. She did call ahead to warn management. I understand that this is a business, and at times there are miscommunication, but this lady completely ruined this special night and could have handled this situation better. She lost customers and could have lost more if we had decided to leave.
This situation could have been handled a lot better.
The food was okay, Stepho's could have done better at a third of the cost. Our server did an awesome job and did apologize about her manager. I don't usually write reviews, but this one had to be written.
We've eaten here 3 or 4 times now and absolutely love it. It's cramped absolutely, but the food and service has always been excellent. For $18 the souvlaki plate can't be beat!
The House Wine is great and pretty cheap. I think it's Sumac Ridge. Definitely make reservations as every time we've been it's packed. Definitely a family favourite with us.
Attended this little restaurant on a busy Saturday night with a friend who had dined here before. The service was very god - friendly and attentive staff, food was excellent - the greek ribs are a house specialty, and the ambiance was charming. The chocolate cake was a real treat - seems a bit pricey until you see what you get - easily shared with a desert-loving friend. I will definitely return.
It is a bit squishy when you walk in the door. We did have reservations (good idea) and our table was ready immediately. We did find it a little unusual to be seated beside another 4 people. Our service was excellent and food came in a reasable time. Loved the Garlic Butter Prawns. The portions are very large. The cost is comparable to other like restaurants. The salad that came with the meal was larger than expected. The other 3 people in my party also enjoyed their meals. We didn't stay for dessert or coffee as we were heading to a hockey game. The bill came quickly so we could leave in time to make the game.
Would definately go again. There is only one toilet each for men and women. You may have to wait a bit to get in.
Although, the ambience at this restaurant is excellent, the service quality did not match. I had no complaints about the food, it was decent and of good value. There is definately lots to choose from the menu, as well. I don't think I will return though because I think small restaurants should be more friendly and courteous.
When we first walked in, i guess it was the owners wife or some older woman told us there were no seats and we'd be waiting ''quite a while'' . somehow the bartender knew that wasn't true and told her there was a table for two. she seemed drunk the entire night.
we got seated and did not get acknowledged until the owner's wife asked if we had been helped yet. then we finally got a server.
the place is extremely crampt. but it was full so i thought it would be good.
i had the 9 oz tenderloin. the steak was cooked how i wanted it, but the vegetables were cooked in something i didnt particularly like. i found a peice of calamari in my plate as well as random bits of cauliflower which didn't belong there (messy/dirty plate?) ....
the chocolate cake for dessert was the worst chocolate cake ive ever had in my life. it was drizzled in some red and white gel which tasted horrible. it was just bad. i couldnt even finish it. and i'm a huge chocolate lover.
we won't be back.
My friends and I went to Little Billy's a couple of weeks ago. The food was actually quite tasty. A big pricey for what it's worth but overall we all enjoyed it. I had the tenderloin, not sure why it was butterflied but still tasty, loved the charcoal grilling. My friend had the lobster and seafood pasta. The lobster was a bit over cooked but the dish was overall good. Small place, kinda like communal seating. Out table was parked right next to another table, it was enough spacing between us so it wasn't an issue for us. Didn't try the pizza but will next time we visit
I was first introduced to Little Billy's Steakhouse by a group of friends. We now come often, and always have a great time.
The look and feel of this restaurant is one-of-a kind. It offers a truly up-scale feel thats close to home.
Love the food. Try the Paidakia Ribs, you won't be disappointed! One meal is enough to satisfy your hunger.
The Greek Salad is incredibly fresh and full of flavor. The staff are genuine, and the service is great.
This is a great place to have an event or birthday. The sound system is top notch, and the atmosphere is electric.
I bring all my friends here for dinner before heading downtown for the night. You won't regret it.
My husband and I went to this restaurant for dinner a few nights ago and were extremely disappointed! From the minute we walked in the experience was terrible. We arrived around 7:45 on a Monday night and there were about 5 occupied tables and about 10+ empty tables.. when we were finally greeted at the door it seemed that there were no clean tables to sit us at which was surprising since the staff outnumbered the customers!
We were finally plunked down at a squishy table in the middle of the restaurant right beside the cash register/bar - despite this fact we were ignored for 15 minutes until finally someone said "whose serving that table".... While we sat there waiting for someone to take our order or even come over to our table about 5 other couples arrived at different times... and every time the "hostess/manager/owner??" not sure what her job was - attempted to seat each of them with the same "oh there are no clean tables".. rather than put down her wine glass and actually clean a table she just kept squishy by us and saying there was no were to sit anyone... it was completely ridiculous!... when our order was finally taken and our food arrived (all at the same time I might add - appies and entree's arrived together) it was awful - the kalamari was soggy and greasy, the ceasar salad was old, soggy and flavourless and my husband's lobster pasta was chewy and disgusting - he actually couldn't even eat it... and he eats everything! - not once did anyone ever come and ask us how everything was - not did they mention the fact that pretty much our plates were cleared away full... oh and there was some sort of plastic bits in my kalamari... NICE - all in all very bad service and food and a very cramped restaurant. I wouldn't waste my time or money at this restaurant again.
