Filipino style bakery in Burnaby's Crystal Mall
Their pandesal is the real Filipino Pandesal, less sweet and tasted like less oil, that makes the bun less dense... Good job with the look, I like the pink color for the packing and the service: very friendly people......
Good luck to you "Lily Bakery", you are the other good option of the common pandesal brand !!..
This bakery is now half it's size, and is now a Filipino bakery. There are some remnants of the previous bakery, for instance they still sell rice cakes. They offer some samples of their new offerings which is nice. The ube flavoured products here tasted strong, I love the ube mamon cake at Goldilocks bakery better, it's so light and almost creamy tasting and the light purple colouring of the cake is pretty. I purchased an ensaymada with sugar and few cheese shreds on top. It was decent, but slightly pricey at $1.50. They seem fairly new and the workers there still seem to be figuring things out. For instance they weren't too sure about the prices of certain items. Would be best to just create a price list and leave notecards with prices in front of their baked goods, some items were priced but most were not. This place is busier at least than the last bakery was so it might be around longer.
I passed by this bakery after having lunch at the Crystal Mall food court. Normally I would pass by this store without a second glance. This location was home to some different bakeries over the past many years and they've never been that great.
This time they were handing out free samples of the Pan-de-sal. That's when I realised they have switched over to a Philipino bakery. The Pan-de-sal was delicious! So soft and fresh and very tasty. It's slightly sweet and you don't feel "yucky" after eating it because it's not too rich (I find the one from Aling Mary's too rich). I bought half a dozen and it didn't last to see the next day :) We finished them all that same night, trying it with different fillings (butter, jam, condensed milk, pork floss). It's good with whatever filling we put in. We warmed it up in the microwave for 10 seconds, then put it in our counter-top oven for around 1 minute. The result... fresh bread smell all over the house and fresh-tasting bread. Oh so good!!
Yesterday we went back there to buy more Pan-de-sal. On our way out the guy there let us try a Spanish bread. Oh my!! So fresh and so good! I shared it with my husband and he insisted we HAVE to go back and get more. So we did. Brought some to my parents' house and everyone loved it! Just microwave it for 10-15 seconds and it's as good as fresh. It just melts in your mouth - again, not too sweet.
Great breads and great service. They're not hesitant to give you free samples to try out. Not stingy and they know they make good breads and people will go back as long and they give it a chance and try once. I'll definitely be back to try the other baked goods they have.
I've been to this bakery many times whenever I buy glasses or have lunch in Crystal Mall. I think this bakery is run by a Korean owner/baker because I see that she's the only one in the kitchen everytime. To me, the only thing good with this bakery is the tiny glutinous balls, i don't know what they're called but they are the size of golf balls and white in colour with a little of black sesame. They are chewy that's why I find it different in a good way from any other products in chinese bakery so I liked it. The other thing that i like is the rice crackers, they come in very big bags of 15 to 30 of them. They are not too sweet yet satisfying and not fattening. :D I will definitely come back here again for those items.
I keep coming back to this bakery for their honey balloon bun, which looks pretty big but hollow inside. I always like the crust of a bread more than the bread itself, so this bun is perfect for me! There's a little honey glazed inside it, enough to satisfy a little sweet craving. I have also tried the napoleon bar (they have a specific name for it but i can't seem to recall, it's like 5 little bars placed in a styrofoam, wrapped in plastic). The owner/manager and baker were really nice in explaining what things are and what they taste like. They have cute birthday cakes too, way nicer than the regular cream/fruit chinese combo.
